Unbroken

We've been discussing the book with our table groups.  Now it's time to branch out and find out what others that are reading this book think.  Take some time to think about a part of the book that would make for a good discussion.  It can be any part from the beginning to the part you read for today.

Tell about the part you read, give your thoughts about it, and invite others to share their thoughts too.

Here are some discussion stems.  Choose one of the following or make a similar type of post.

I want to talk about the part where __________________.  I thought _____________________.  What did you think?

The part that I thought was most interesting so far was _____________________________.  I think _________________________________________.  What did you think?

  1. I want to talk about the part where Louie went from 12th place to 7th place in the 5,000-meter run. I thought his brother really helped him. Pete told him "A lifetime of glory is worth a moment of pain." Pete gave him good advice and it gave Louie courage to push through the pain.

    1. I'm assuming that this was very hard for Louie,he had already ran almost 3 miles and then does a lap in 40 seconds.

    2. I agree because if Pete didn't encourage Louie to do better or even become a runner then he might not even be there.

  2. I want to talk about the part where Louie and his members were in the ocean for 24 days. I thought that they wouldn't survive. I think that they should have stayed on land and hid instead of going into the ocean.

    1. I think they should've stayed on land. They would be able to hide better and they wouldn't have to worry about some of the things that happened in the ocean.

    2. I agree, I think they should have stayed on land because they knew that whoever was on a raft in the ocean floated multiple thousand miles in a day, so why would they go in the water and put their self more in danger.

    3. It would have been a better idea to stay on land in my opinion, that's just me though

  3. I want to talk about the part where Louie was in a race and he fractured a rib and got cut twice. I was wondering if they did this on purpose or not. I think that if this didn't happen, he would've placed better in the race.

    1. I agree. If he didn't get hurt then he probably would have done better and would've had more energy to get through the race.

    2. the other runners hurt him so that they could win, yes it was on purpose.

  4. The part that I thought was the most interesting so far was when louie had to go help with the war and he was the one who dropped the bombs. I think they explained what he experienced in the war was a way for you to get into the book and the feelings he felt you understood.

    1. I agree because it helped me understand what Louie had to do if he wasn't in his track career.

  5. I want to talk about the part where everyone survived being shot at numerous times, did not get eaten by sharks, lived on a broken raft, and stayed alive on the open ocean for 47 days. I thought that that is just.. Kinda impossible.

    1. I think it must have been a miracle for them to survive. They probably went through a lot and were very relieved when it was all over.

    2. I also think that it's a miracle because I think that they wouldn't have survived on the raft for 47 days
