  1. Passing Time
Imagine that you are standing out in the hallway of Bartels Middle School. The bells just rang, yet some students are frantically scurrying to their next class. They walk into the room late, giving extra work for teachers who already took attendance or were explaining to the class the next page of homework.

Up until the Columbine shooting in 1999, students could carry a backpack from class to class. That rule was terminated in an effort to prevent dangerous items being on school ground. As a result students must carry their books wherever they go, stopping at their lockers often.

Last year, the passing time at Bartels switched from four minutes to three. The change eliminates time for students to be messing around but gives less time for those who respectfully follow it to do things such as go to the bathroom or filling water bottles.

A study done by a BMS student shows that the majority of the 75 surveyed students wish the passing time could go back up to four, claiming that nothing was wrong with how it was before the change.

Here is what Mr. Dunks, one of the two health teachers said:

“ It should change to 4 minutes. 3 Minutes is too short and frustrating for teachers when students come in late after the bell. ”

While Mr Dunks gives his response based on how the teachers that have to deal with the students who trickle in after the bell like the strays in a herd of animals might feel. Ms Doro tells her story on the children that come into her class.

“ Currently, there is three minutes and I think it is difficult for students to get to my building on time in three minutes. Last year there was four minutes and I did not have nearly the amount of tardy students that I do now. It may work for other teachers that are in the main building, but it does not work for my location. I think a four minute passing time would be better. “

Not everyone wants the time to change. Here is a segment of what Ms. Schultz, a school counselor said:

“ I think the passing time for BMS should stay as it is now. It is true that students now only have 3 minutes to get to class instead of 4, but for most of the day, students lockers are close to their academic classes, 3 minutes should be sufficient. “

What do you think should happen regarding this subject?

  2. Some students who don’t participate in musical activities may have one or more Study Halls every day. These students will most likely get most or all of their homework done. Students who don’t have homework won’t be prepared for when they don’t have a Study Hall. When students have homework they usually have homework in two to four classes. For Math sometimes these Advanced Math students get four pages front and back of work. Most people in BMS don’t have a Study Hall everyday and more have them on alternating days. Study Halls can help a lot in getting homework done if they are used correctly.

If you are in sports, practice can last until 5 or 5:30 and if you have to do other things that could possibly make late nights for BMS students getting homework done. If kids are staying up late doing their homework they will most likely be tired the next day.

Some students think that they are getting buried under a mountain of homework that takes away from kids lifes. Here is David Williams (2 sport athlete at BMS) “There was one time that I had to stay up until 11:30 getting all of my homework done.”

The work time compared at home to students with a study hall and the ones without is a very big jump. Everyone that I have talked to have said that they have had a couple of late nights and they dislike it.

If students have one or two study halls it won’t prepare them for when they don't in High School. The average time spent for homework in High School is around 30-40 minutes per class. If you have 5 classes that could add up to be two and a half hours of homework. The time spent in Middle School compared to the time spent in High School could be a big jump.

Students that have homework in Middle School will have around an hour a night but in High School they will have 2-3 times that.

  4. Too Much Absents
Do you know someone from school that was absent that day and the next day they get stressed out because they weren’t there and do more homework than other students had. The question would be if they were absent that day and get stressed out about getting more homework they next day you come back to school

Some students get more stress out about being absent. A lot of kids don’t like extra homework because they were absent that they come the next day and they get more and more homework. They might have school events after school that day and they need to do homework the late at night or early in the morning.

A lot of students get extra homework because they were absent. It make the student feel like they have a job and they were late and they get fired.

  5. In school, lots of bad things happen including being disrespectful to other students and teachers. Kids make fun of others looks, how they talk, or who they are as a person. The bullies may have some problems with their own life and the may bully to make them feel better about themselves.

Based on interviews this reported conducted with 8th-grade students, the state of bullying at BMS is a minor problem. Those interviewed reported that bullies are bullying others about how they talk or how they look.

The people interviewed said bullies may bully because of something bugging them or a issue they're having in their life. They can have many issues including them not thinking they are cool and maybe thinking their lame. As a result, they make others feel bad so they can feel better.

8th graders reported that they will just hurt the bullies pride by roasting them or trying to bully them back like a endless war to deal with the problem.

  6. Four day school week

5 days is the typical school week for an student/teacher, now although that leaves 2 days for a weekend, some say that might not be enough. I interviewed 3 student and 1 teacher from bartels middle school to better understand a typical week for them. All of the student said what i expected “2 day isn't enough” but the teacher said something unexpected.

She said that the 2 days that the students and teachers have for a weekend is enough. She also brought another issue to my attention. For the students that do their work and study and participate in extracurricular activities, some student get to stressed out with 5 continuous days of homework and studying, and they might need a longer break. She said that if we shorten the school week to a 4 day school week but made summer break shorter and school days 1 hour longer that might help with the issue of stressed out students.

She also stated that for the kids that don't participate in activities and don't do their work in school they should be forced to go to school on the weekends, and stay after the school day is over to do their homework and study for 1 hour. She stated that that might help troubled students get on the right track.

  7. School phone policies have many rules. One of the main rules is that you have to keep your phone in your locker and it must be off. The only time you are allowed to use it is before and after school.

This reporter interviewed three 8th grade students and their opinion was that the cell phone policy is dumb stupid, and way too strict. However, when this reporter interviewed a teacher, the story was very different and the teacher thought it was a very good idea to keep the policy the same.

Ideas that students have for changes to the policy are that they should be able to use their phones during lunch, passing time, and study hall when they finished all of their work. The schools phone policy is like jail, you have to follow the many rules that come with both places. So overall 8th grade students believe that the phone policy is too strict and the teacher things that is is perfect. What do you think?

  8. Vaping

Vaping is very common for middle and high schoolers in the us. Over 10% of students who smoke or vape are doing it just to do it, or because they tried it a few times and now they're addicted to it because of all the nicotine in it. Students are becoming more and more into vaping even though they shouldn't. It's illegal to buy a vape or cigarettes under the age of 18 because of how harmful it is to students. Nicotine is a chemical substance inside of cigarettes and inside most vape pens. Nicotine is also highly addictive. That's why nicotine is put inside of vapes because the companies know that they'll make more money, Now that juul has put flavors inside the vapes, teens are using it more because it tastes and smells good. The more money juul and other vape companies make, the more flavors they can make and put into the vape to make even more addictive which is not good for the teens lungs and heart. The teens that vape now are even more likely to smoke cigarettes once they get older, which causes even more problems towards their health in the upcoming future. Most teens say they use vaping as an essential for when they become stressed, whether it's at home, at school, or even just working becomes really stressful for certain teens. Vaping has became a huge impact on us teens in 2018.

    1. Talking pictures in locker rooms at schools, this is a problem at Bms this reporter interviewed five people, one sas talking pictures in locker rooms makes “unsafe” and “paranoid”. Macaulay, a girl at Bms “I have seen these pictures on “instagram, facebook and snapchat. Another student at Bms says “people do this to make themselves feel good”.

Next, a local parent says “I am glad this is illegal because it keeps kids safe from sexual predators”. Finally, a high school student says “there is no way to fix this because if people really wanted to do it they would find a way”.

All in all there is no way fix this problem and if these pictures keep happening it could get people that weren't meant to be in it, in it. This could cause a hurricane like effect stripping there personality and will to go to school.

  9. Bartels Middle School has a pretty strict dress code according to the students there. The strictness can be a good and a bad thing. It can be a useful rule to have so people don’t wear too revealing clothing. It might be a bad thing because people sometimes might not be able to express themselves appropriately.

All the people that were interviewed thought that the dress code was more aimed towards girls. Also that it wasn’t fair that students can’t even show their shoulders. Most of the interviewed students thought the dress code is overreacting.

Some students say that they want to be able to be who they want to be. Every day students at BMS are isolated from the person they want to be, like a ship lost at sea that has no contact with people on land and don’t know the way back.

The dress code might not be all bad though. There is a good side to it, believe it or not. For example, the rules say you can’t wear shorts or shirts that show a lot of skin. That’s can be a good thing because some people might come to school with barely anything on.

A lot of kids at BMS don’t like the dress code. Students that were interviewed said that they don’t like the way that you can’t wear, for example, tank tops and hats. So what do you think about schools dress codes? Is it fair to you?

  10. Vaping

Vaping a very common thing in america. This substance is not healthy for the human body. One thing a reporter heard was that vaping is harmful for babies. Because some people are more worried about vaping than their own children. Or even paying attention to their children. So then they baby gets hurt. The parents don’t know what's wrong so the keep trying to calm them down . But that doesn't work, so they finally find out what's wrong. And then they take the kid to the ER. After the reporter heard about that story she was more interested. So she interviewed people some say they like it others say they don't really care about it.

Some people use it to stop smoking others just use it to use it. And then they get really addicted. Some say they use it for a stress reliever. ANd then you have the people who use it for a reason. You never know what could be in the vape juice. There could be drugs or even alcohol in it. Some people think its messed up because what it can do to your body. There are some very big risk behind it. This reporter ask some people some more questions. Some came back and said they would do it and
some have bad stories behind vaping or even smoking cigarettes.

  11. Every student has three minutes of passing time. Three minutes is a short period of time.
But many students are good at making it to class on time says an 8th grade english teacher
    which goes by miss devries.
She has observed the hallways and said from observation itś very easy for most students but
difficult for others to make it to class on time.

A BMS student, Nathan says it's a struggle to make it to a class on time he doesn't think three minutes is enough time to make to class in his passing time to make it to class in his passing time he gets his things for hi next class and sometimes makes it to class on time. Another BMS student, Teddy says he for the most part makes it to class on time and it's frustrating for him.

When the bell rings and he's not in the classroom, during his passing time he gets a drink get´s his things then goes to class. It can be very chaotic in the halls like people finding sales on black friday. Do you think three minutes is enough passing time?

  12. Dress code

Many items of clothing at Bartels MIddle School are getting dress coded. Such as crop tops, shirts that show shoulders, short shorts, pajamas, shirts that expose people's backs, and many more. Lots of people think that the dress code is one sided. One reporter interviewed many different people like students, and teachers at Bartels Middle School. This reporter interviewed a student and asked, “ have you ever got dress coded”? The student said, “me and many other student at Bartels MIddle School have got dress coded”.

Many of the teachers at the school say that they would like the dress code to be more enforced because students get away with lots of clothing. The reporter asked Asia Miller if she has ever got dress coded and she said? “ yes I have got dress coded more than once”. She also asked, “ What do teachers do when they dress code someone”? Asia said, “ They react by looking and searching for the student”.

The reporter went to Jayson Kreier and asked, “ Do you think the dress code is one sided”? Jayson said, “ I think so because I have never really seen a boy get dress coded”. One student said, “the dress code is as big as a mountain”!

The reporter asked Mitchell Fimreite, “ how do teachers react when they dress code someone”? Mitchell said, “ they react by making it sound like something violent happened”. The reporter went over the Pardeeville dress code and the only thing on there's that Bartels has is the pajamas. So does Bartels MIddle School have too big of a dress code? What do you think about the dress code? Do you think it is unfair?

The 3 girls that this reporter interview said it’s very strict. The 3 boys that this reporter interviewed said
They are overly dramatic. All in all almost everyone that has a job or goes to school has been dress coded at least once.

  14. As kids and teens get older, the controversial topic of dress codes becomes a bigger part of their lives. Many people think that dress codes make children uncomfortable, irritated and angry. This reporter found that after interviewing teachers and students from BMS and PHS, most agreed that dress codes make children uncomfortable and angry. Generally, in society dress codes are seen as too strict.

A student that was interviewed talked about an event they witnessed that involved the dress code. They saw a student get dress coded at lunch, and that student was curious as to why the student wasn’t asked to change in the three classes prior to lunch. This is an example that supports the theory that the dress code is mainly enforced based on teachers’ opinions of inappropriate clothing.

Another story told by a student at PHS recalled a day during homecoming week where a boy wore a tank top with slits going down the side, revealing most of his upper body. This student also recalled a girl get dress coded the same day for showing an inch of midriff. When the student asked the teacher why the boy didn’t get dress coded, the teacher said that it was because it was homecoming week, but the girl still got dress coded. This reveals that dress codes are sexist and based on opinion.

Students from a school in California wore clothing stating, “dress code sucks” they said, “ Hopefully the board will see that we aren’t blindly rebelling, but simply advocating for our rights,” Another school had High school boys dress up in womens clothing and girls in mens clothing. One saying, “If we can dress up like them, they can dress like us.” These are just a few ways the students are fighting for their rights and beliefs.

  15. Dress Code

At BMS there is a dress code, a couple things you get dress coded for is crop tops, cut offs, off the shoulder shirts, shirts showing bra straps, and ripped jeans. The dress codes seem to be directed more at girls than guys. A reported interviewed a few student at BMS and they think they over exaggerate about it, during homecoming week these girls wore spandex but they didn’t get dress coded, so what is the school doing?

Do you think that they over exaggerate about dress code? If there i such a big deal about dress codes shouldn’t teachers follow it to? A reporter asked 3 students from BMS they think the dress code is one sided they overreact on somethings students wear. This reporter interviewed someone who works at BMS they think that dress codes should be enforced, that students get away with to much, but they do stereo type sometimes.

The people the reporter interviewed said that they should start to focus on guys, because we don’t want to see their boxers. If they don’t like the way they dress then shouldn’t the school have uniforms, or are they to cheap to have them? The dress code doesn’t matter in high school, so why does this matter in middle school. One day a teacher dress coded a student and ordered them to go to the office the student didn’t.

The teacher that dress coded the student wouldn’t have know the student didn’t till the teacher went down to the office, the teacher asked the office if anyone had come down and they and they said no. Since the teacher was told no one had come down he started to look for the student, now is that over reacting?

Do you think the teachers make this unfair?

  16. Bullying At BMS

Bully is a pack of wolves that eat away people's reaction especially at BMS. Majority of students at Bms saw kids been bullied at BMS. Students saw kids have been bullied by Physical bullying. Bullys also bully students at BMS because they want what other people. Lots of people from BMS said that they say people bully because of there inside traits. Kids like to bully people because bullies are just jealous of the students that they bully.

At Bartels Middle School in Portage, Wisconsin, There was a girl who didn’t want to be friends with a girl and that girls made fun of the other girl and talked back behind the girls back. There are so many types of bullying that happens at BMS. Talking behind people's back is a type of bullying that Happens at BMS. Cyber bullying is also a type of bullying that happens to BMS students. Bullying with language is a major type of bullying that happens at BMS.

When people bully people at BMS, the students that gets bullied feels like they are nobody and doesn’t want to go back to school. At Bartels Middle School, Students see their peers bullying bullied because of their traits. Students also get bullied because of past or personal problems. Students at BMS feel that bullying should stop at Battles Middle School.

  17. BMS Has Too Many Vaping Issues

In bms, students and teachers are shocked with the amount of vaping issues in the school. Vaping does happen and it is getting to be a big issue in Bartels Middle School.

About 35% of students at bartels middle school think vaping is okay to do. The other percent of people think that i should not be okay to do at school, especially with nicotine in them.

Now some cops and teachers are trying to stop the vaping in the bathroom or in class.

Someone said that that is not the right thing to do. You can do it at school but you are just asking to get in trouble. Right now we don't know what vaping does to your body, to start the young and they end up being really bad your body is going to be in very bad shape when your older and might have lung cancer for all you know.

All in all we should stop the vaping in school. We should stop doing things that you don't know if they are bad for you or not. It could be harmful to your body and that would not be good.

  18. Passing Time

Passing time at Bartels Middle School can be somewhat difficult. Kids in 8th grade said they do not have enough time to get to class on some days. One of the reasons why they do not get to class on time is because they don’t have enough time to go to their locker, get all their things, and then get to class in 3 minutes.

Another reason is that some classes are further than maybe Ms. Heavner’s room or Mr. Hepp's room. The art room, agriculture room, Ms. Maratik’s room, and Mrs. Karpelenia’s room are most likely a little ways from people’s lockers. So, that might take a little more time than just going to Ms. Heavner’s classroom.

Some teachers said that there is plenty of time to go to your locker, get a drink or go to the bathroom, and still be on time. Kids on the other hand do not agree with this. A more appropriate time would maybe be 4-5 minutes, but that would also take some time off of classes.

Paige said “If people didn’t stand in the middle of the hallways, it would be easier to get to class” The halls are like big minnows swimming, trying to get to where they need to go, dodging all the other minnows. Basically, passing time can be a little difficult, to go to your locker and get all your things, get a drink, and maybe go to the bathroom.

  19. BMS has to many assignments nightly

In BMS 8th grade students are shocked with the huge increase in homework this year. Many kids say there are to many assignments nightly, but they have some very good ways to get their assignments done.

About 80% of the 8th grade students here at BMS say it is far easier to get homework done with a studyall or when you don't have sports or things to do after school. Most students at BMS say that it is very hard to get piles of homework done when you have very little freetime with no study halls.

Now some teachers and students say that having mountains of homework keeps students heads in school and keeps them focused on school, when they aren't there.

Some reasons students don't get homework done is because of sports, split parents, and family or friend emergencies, these are some reasons kids say that they do not get there homework done. A couple other reasons are special occasions, hunting, fishing , being sick, you don't understand something, birthdays, family events, and injuries. Students at BMS also say “there is too much hard homework that isn't really that well explained.”

Classes with the most homework is math with “roughly” two assignments nightly, and english with “long boring assignments.” Most ambitious kids can get 2 to 4 average done in one study hall, and they can also get 1-2 done in homeroom and a really quick one done in intervention if they have a study hall intervention. But not many students have study halls in fact over 65% of kids don't have a study hall all year long. Kids don't always have time in homeroom either. They can have meetings or have to finish a test for a class. Also most people do not have a study -yu
hall intervention they have a reading or writing intervention.

All in all there isn't many really easy ways to get homework done, but there are ways to get some done. Yout can do it in class, in homeroom, and mostly all the extra time you have when you have assignments, also doing your work at home

may help even if that means less sleep or playing video games to get some work done. One way a student named Nathan at BMS gets his work done is by mixing work and fun nathan says “I do one or two things of homework and then do something fun like a game of fortnight or eat then I do a couple more things of homework then repeat.” Pretty much there isn't any easy ways to get homework done but “getting partner or mixing fun and work” is a great way to start.

  20. Bartels Middle School (BMS) may not be giving the students enough time to eat lunch, have recess, and also giving bad quality food. Some students have different opinions on the matter, lets see what they have to say.

One question asked was their thoughts about the time there is to eat lunch. “ Lunch is to short, there should be a few more minutes to eat.¨ said a few students. Jayson K. said ¨ The time to eat is far to short, by the time we get through the lunch line we only have about five minutes to eat.¨ In the United States the average time to eat food is 20 minutes, and with what students have said BMS is 15 minutes under the average time.

The next question asked was about the quality of the food given, There is a dispute between the students, some said the food given is good, and there is a good size meal given. Jayson K. said ¨ The food taste bad, and I don't eat rice anymore because Im scared it will taste like school rice.¨ In the US 67% of students say the food taste bad, and the food is frozen and heated up an hour before its time to eat.

BMS has reduced the time for recess by about 3 minutes to make sure the students get inside the school early enough. The students said ¨that they all get inside on time and even a couple minutes early, we just want to have fun at recess, we only have 30 minutes to do what we want and have fun. We would like to have at least 1 hour of recess and to eat.¨

  21. This reporter found that after talking to teachers and students at BMS, that everyone had a different point of view to the dress code. This reporter found out from interviewing the people that they seemed to all have a clear opinion on what they thought about the dress code. On the topic everyone had a strong response. A students opinion on the dress code was, ¨ to strict, can wear whatever we want, having to change and we should be able to express ourselves¨. Ever student who ever you ask, always says that the dress code is unfair. Itś just how students are. Their friends get dress coded so they start to dislike the dress code themselves.

One other student says, “ learn how to follow the rules, if you don't like them grow up ¨. In another view some teacher do help out students, to find clothes to wear. They mainly think that a student needs to come prepared to school, by wearing the appropriate clothes.

Some teacher say that, “ the dress code policy is fair ¨. When knowing what is appropriate at school is very important. Other teachers say that school is a place where students learn, and if they have to worry about how others see them then that can be distracting them from learning. It's the students job to wear correct clothes to school.

When attending school at BMS, you need to not show off too much skin or body parts. As some teachers and parents say, ¨ enjoy being a kid while you are one ¨. When going to school in the summer, it's hard to know what is appropriate and what is not. Students are getting in trouble for wearing what they think fits the weather outside, but ends up breaking the rules.

One of the students said, ¨ a lot of my friends are getting dress coded ¨. Another student said that she sees a lot of people getting dress coded. Teacher, students and everyone know that once you get into the Middle School you have a little more freedom. So, then people think that they can wear whatever they want and get away with it.

With the students this reporter has interviewed, they say they think that what they wear is cool, and they don't care if they get in trouble. Teacher don´t know which grade is get´s dress coded more, because most of them only teach one grade. So, what they are saying is that they don't know who is really breaking the rules that much, without being there to witness it.

This reporter images that the staff and every teacher try´s to look up at the 8th grade, because they are the oldest in BMS. Whenever students get in trouble or there is an event happening the always say that the students should be doing the right thing. When it comes to the dress code they want the students to know and understand the consequences of not following the rules.

All together, from hearing from students and teachers at BMS, this reporter think that the dress code could be looked at differently from every person individually. As one of the students said, ¨ if they break the rules then they should suffer the consequences. ¨

  22. Bullying at Bartels Middle School is a big issue. Someone will find out one thing about you and bully you for it. It could even be the smallest thing about you, for example the clothes you wear, a disability, your home life, the people you're friends with, your sexuality, race, Anything!

They will bully you for it. Sometimes the bullying gets so bad that you don't want to get up in the morning to go to school or you don't want to be alive, sometimes bullying gets so bad and you don't tell anyone it could lead to depression or anxiety and sometimes even suicide. If everyone would just be nice and accept you for who you are life and school would be better. Are you being bullied?

What do you think about the amount of homework in bartels middle school? Many people in the school will say that there's too much, and others will say the complete opposite. On some days people even have up to two quizzes or test on the same day.People usually have up to three assignments,or more than that a day.Taking up to an hour and a half, and two hours a day.Which is trouble for students that attend after school activities.

Which leads to the next topic.Should kids have a study hall every day.Studies halls cut down on kids homework by up to an hour if using it correctly.Which helps kids relax, and not feel cluttered with work every day.Study halls would be a good thing to have every day for most people for various reasons is what many people say.Overall work should be cut down on students in most categories.

  24. Dress Code

At Bartels Middle School there is a dress code, the dress code states that crop tops, ripped jeans, tank tops, off the shoulder shirts are not allowed. A lot of girls at BMS wear these things but get in trouble, then they have to change or put on a sweatshirt.

A reporter interviewed a few students at BMS and their thoughts on it weren’t very good. A girl said that students shouldn’t have a dress code and that teachers overreact about it. The reporter asked another student at BMS and he said that he thinks the dress code is more directed at girls. Many students at BMS have been dress coded but was it for a good reason? This same reporter also interviewed a BMS employee, the employee said that the dress codes should be enforced and that it’s not a fashion show its school, but the employee also thinks that teachers stereotype sometimes.

The reporter noticed that there are different feelings toward this topic, multiple are on how the students hate it and the teachers/employees think it should be enforced. The reporter realized that she needed to dig a little deeper into the topic, she interviewed a boy his thoughts were that guys don’t really care what girls wear but he thinks that teachers do overreact about most things students get dress coded for. The last person the reporter interviewed was a teacher at BMS and they said that the dress code is fine, what is appropriate hasn’t changed but fashion has. They reported that dress code prepares you for real life and that they don’t like to dress coding students and they don’t like the disrespect after they do dress code them.

The reporter finally figured that student and teachers have their own opinions on the dress code and that it’s the students choice on what they should and shouldn’t wear.
