What do scientists know about our DNA?  How did they figure it out?  How are they using that information?

Let's take a little break from Punnett Squares and find out the answers to those and other questions.

Out of the Dust - Autumn 1935

Reading Class
April 30th

Autumn 1935 concludes Billie Jo's Diary.  Now that we've finished the book, we need to work on our theme assignment.  For that assignment, I want you to describe Billie Jo at the end of the book, and make some inferences about what the theme might be.  But before you do what I want you to do.....

Use the blog to write your reaction to the book and reply to each other's comments.

Then work on the Theme Assignment
Have that done for tomorrow!

Out of the Dust - Spring 1935

Reading
April 24, 2014

Short Research Project

During this season, Karen Hesse references (talks about) several different things that really happened in 1935.  Today, you will be picking one that you are most curious about and completing a short research project about it.  We're going to continue to work on our research skills.  So, once you pick your topic you will be focusing on which key words to use for research.  When you find a good source, you will need to check it out and figure out what your subtopics should be.  Then you will be ready to take notes that you can use to make a paragraph.  The notes sheet has spots for all of these steps.

You will be sharing your paragraph about your topic on the blog.  Once you've shared, reply to others' paragraphs.

Out of the Dust - Winter 1935

Reading
April 21 and 22

CCSS RL.6.6
Karen Hesse has written this book from Billie Jo’s point of view.  Throughout the novel, she has developed Billie Jo’s point of view by using all of the poems in Billie Jo’s diary.  We’re going to look at point of view in a little different way today by completing a RAFT.  We’ll be sharing it on the blog when we’re done.  After that, we will have a discussion about point of view.

Role:  Billie Jo’s Dad
Audience:  No One - He’s writing in his diary and he thinks  it will never be seen.
Format:  Free Verse Poem

Out of the Dust - Summer 1934

Reading

Your assignment for this section is to have a blog discussion about the events of Summer 1934.  Instead of me telling you what to write about, you will choose what you want to discuss.  Make sure that you give your full opinion with a lot of detail.  Then reply to others' comments.  Make sure you have a quality reply.  Cool :) is not a reply.

Out of the Dust - Spring 1934

Reading
April 15 and 16, 2014

As you read the Spring 1934 section, you will notice that Billie Jo is describing her parents in many of the poems.  We also start to get a clearer picture of who Billie Jo is through her poetry.  While you're reading, I'd like you to take notes on each of the three characters.  Assignment has all of the directions you will need.

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks

Science Class
April 15, 2014

Last summer, our teacher book club read the book, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks.  It followed the life of an amazing woman, Henrietta Lacks.  Even though she passed away a long time ago, her cells are still living all over the world.  In fact, her cells are incredibly important to science.  They are called HeLa cells, after her name.  We aren't going to read that entire book; however, we are going to read a Science World Magazine article about her.  You will be answering some close reading questions about the article.  Then you will discuss the topics with each other.

In order to discuss with all of the kids on the team, let's do the discussion on the blog.  Instead of me telling you what to write, I want you to decide what part of this article you would like to discuss with the rest of the kids on team 6a.  Write your reaction with enough detail so that anyone who reads it knows your thoughts and will be able to reply to them.  That means you can't just write enough details to remind YOU what you were thinking.

Microorganism Bridge Activity

Science Class
April 10, 2014

Yesterday, we learned that yeast reproduce more quickly in warm water than in cold.  Today, we're going to add to our knowledge of yeast an other microorganisms by completing a bridge activity.  You will have today and tomorrow in class to complete this activity.

If you are on task and working hard, the notes will be all that you have to do - no paragraph.  The directions are a little bit different than normal, so pay attention to them!

6th Grade Survey

Science Class
April 8, 2014

The 6th grade teachers will be making a presentation about 6th grade at Bartels Middle School next week Monday night.  We don't want it to be just about the teachers' point of view, so we need to have some of your input too.  You will need to complete at least FIVE questions on the following survey.  Pick the five that are MOST IMPORTANT to you.  If you'd like to do more, you can certainly do that!

Dust Bowl Stories

Reading
April 4, 2014

Today, we will listen to and read some first hand stories of people that lived during the Dust Bowl.  Start out by just checking out the stories they have to tell.  Then choose the three that are most interesting to you.  You're going to write a paragraph that summarizes their stories.  Before you write the paragraph, fill in the graphic organizer.  Then write the paragraph below.  If you would rather write this out on paper, you can just draw the chart and hand in the chart and your paragraph.

You can copy and paste your summary here, but you do not need to!
