Getting Away With Murder

We've been discussing the book with our table groups.  Now it's time to branch out and find out what others that are reading this book think.  Take some time to think about a part of the book that would make for a good discussion.  It can be any part from the beginning to the part you read for today.

Tell about the part you read, give your thoughts about it, and invite others to share their thoughts too.

Here are some discussion stems.  Choose one of the following or make a similar type of post.

I want to talk about the part where __________________.  I thought _____________________.  What did you think?

The part that I thought was most interesting so far was _____________________________.  I think _________________________________________.  What did you think?

  1. I want to talk about the how Emmett Till was one of the first African-American to spike the Civil right movement and isn't really mentioned or talked about in history classes. Emmetts case caused a big impact on all colored people. What do you think?

    2. Yes it impacted a lot of colored people. Emmett should have been rewarded by striking the civil rights movement by instead be died from doing practically nothing.

  2. I want to talk about the part where Emmett was leaving for money. I thought that they told it really well. WHat did you think?

The part that I thought was most interesting so far was how they claimed that the guys were not guilty(innocent) after the guys confessed to kidnapping. I think that the jury claimed that they were not guilty because, it was a white jury with white people on case. What do you think

    1. I think that the jury did wrong letting the two men go. The jury should have had a consequence due to the murder of a child ignoring the fact that he was black. Who knows how many colored children and adults had been murder by the two white men.

    2. I agree, so many children and adults were probably killed before Emmett but people didn't go all crazy about those

    3. I agree too because the jury shoulnt have let them go because it's basically saying if your white you wont get introuble if u do something to a African American you wnt get charged even if its murder

  3. I want to talk about the part where they had an open casket funearel for emmett till. I think that they should not of had one because his body was smashed and decoposed they could barley reconize him. What do you think they should have done.

    1. I think that it was good that they had an open casket funeral because then people could really see what had happened to him because other wise they wouldn't have believed his mom and so in this case they were able to see how he bad his death really was and how bad those white people treated him.

    2. I disagree with you I think the open casket was a good idea. The fact that the world could see what had been done to him was important. His open casket was the spike the civil right movement. His open casket was a really big impact for the white's and black's.

    3. I feel it was a good thing that they had an open casket funeral so everyone can see what they did to this poor boy.

    4. I also think that it was good that they had an open casket funeral because then everyone could see how rude and harmful the whites were to the blacks, Emmett's family members were probably traumatized to see Emmett's body like that but it would help the world see how rude the whites were

    5. I think that it was important to have an open casket for the case and to see how terribly the hurt him.

    1. Yea, I mean it says on the page. And there was a lot of tension between whites and blacks especially in the south so it is very possible.

    2. Yes I think he really did make a poster saying that because then white people thought all black people were bad and they believed that they shouldn't have them near them or doing things that they do. So yes I think that kid really did make that sign because he probably grew up with his parents or guardians teaching him that black people are not good and that he shouldn't do things with them.

    3. I strongly believe that the kid wrote that poster because white kids were very rude to blacks because that is how they were raised so they don't know any other way

    4. Yes, I do think that he made the poster because blacks and whites were very rude to eachother especially in the south.

  5. I think it was wrong on both there parts (emmett till and the white guys). They shouldnt have killed him but he also shouldnt have grabbed her and talk disrepectful to her. But I do think they are equal and that it shouldnt have happened.

  6. I want to talk about how Emmett Till's death was very important at the time that it happened. A lot of people showed up at his funeral and it was a major part in their lives but now we don't even go over it in history classes all we go over about the Civil Rights Movement is Brown vs. Board and Rosa Parks even though Emmett Till is just important. What do you think?

    1. I totally agree with you. His death was important at the tie it happened and made a big impact on lifes. Whites and blacks need to be treated equally.

    2. I also think that Emmett Tills death was a very important topic and that we should have learned abaout this in a class as a lesson.

  7. I want to talk about the part where Emmett Till´s mother had his funeral and she put him in an open castket so they can see what they did to him. I thought she was really trying to get justice done for her son. The part that was most interesting so far was when the author described what Emmett Till´s body looked like. I think that is was very descriptive. What do you think?

    1. I also think that it was very descriptive but in a good way because then we could see what his body really looked and also picture it instead of just looking at it, because then we could see what someone else thought of it and what they seen when they seen the picture too.

  8. I agree with you and that back in those days things were harder for colored people. I think that the court should have done something about the case instead of closing it and letting the two white men go freely.

  9. i agree with you the whites should have been charged exspecally after confessing to the murder

  10. Just a clarification.... when Caroyln said he grabbed her and whistled at her, she was lying. He didn't touch her or whistle. It seems like there's some confusion here.
