  1. How often do you talk to kids that didn’t get sleep? Most schools start around 7:30 to 7:55 am.

An interviewer talked to kids at BMS. Students reported they wake up about 6:00-6:20 am. The interviewer asked about what time they go to bed after they finish their homework. They both said around 11-12 am. 8th graders think sleep is like a black hole it doesn’t exist.

They mentioned they are most productive at night. They said about 2-3 times a week they are almost late for school. So the other wanted to tell me they thought the start time could be later. They just don’t want to get out of school later. They want it to start around 8:15 am and end at 3:30 pm.

In conclusion, starts times seem really early for kids to get up. It is especially hard for the younger kids who are not used to getting up super early.

    1. I thought that that was a good introduction.

  2. Many kids are tired during the day. Teachers say that teaching kids that are tired is like teaching a bunch of zombies. Most kids go to bed around 10pm - 2am because of homework or they simply don’t want to go to bed early, than they wake up around 5am - 7am which only gives them around 4 - 8 hours of sleep. Studies say that teenagers need around 8 hours of sleep.

Benefits of getting a full 8 hours of sleep are, students won’t be as tired during the day and students will be more focused on their school work.

Things that will give you more energy are fruits, vegetables, meats, and some nuts. All of these things will give you the vitamins and nutrients that you need.

  3. Do you get to have your phones in school? If you answered “yes” to this question then how is it that one school gets to have their phones out but other schools don't when they both are learning and doing the same things but have totally different rules. Students at Bartels Middle School in Portage WI. are tired of getting phones taken away, told to put them away, and not having them at all. 9 out of 10 students at BMS think they should get to have them during lunch and out in the halls.

Many students at BMS would like to have their phones when they are not learning or doing work. Some students always have their phones with them in chromebook bags, pencil cases, and pockets. Teachers take about the average of 1-2 phones a month which is a quote from Amanda DeVries 8th grade English teacher at BMS “I would say I take about 1-2 phones a month, it's very rare”. Students have learned how to hide their phones from teachers and the teachers don't know about what goes on in their classrooms behind their back. In conclusion students will continue to have their phones with them until getting it taken away.

  4. School start times are problems for middle school students and teachers everywhere. “I feel rushed in the morning” said Matthew From BMS. Students don’t always work very well because they are tired. The healthy hours of sleep for middle schoolers is 8 hours, only about half the the students get enough. Several people have been late for school or missed the bus. Many people aren’t morning people and even if they are an extra hour would help.

There are also down sides to pushing start times back. One is sports, most people who do sports get home later as it is but they would be home even later. Another problem Would be homework if people don’t have a study hall they will not have much time to work on homework. The last reason would be that it might not work people might just stay up later. Over all there are pros and cons of changing school start times.

  5. On the date of 11/9/2018 we sent in the reporter our reporter Investigated student’s at Bartels Middle School Portage WI. The reporter noticed that not all student’s turned in their homework. Our reporter investigated those students and asked them some questions and found out that they don't have study hall(s), Our reporter wanted to know if they had study halls would that make them get their work done. The reporter investigated a student that had work done and found out that he did have a study hall he had 2 and they were 45 minutes each, he complete his homework in one and a half study halls. He told us he wouldn't be able to complete it if he didn't have his study hall. We now believe that study halls are essential to the average 8th grader.

  6. Dress codes affect girls a lot. When I interviewed a girl from BMS she said “Its sexist to women because they don’t really dress code boys” I also asked a boys perspective on the dress code and he said “I don’t really care about the dress code” so I asked him if he could take off two things from the dress what would he take off, he said he would have taken off “Ripped Jeans and Shoulder shirts for females.”

The dress code is like a traffic light, it limits and stops you from what you want to wear and
after I had interviewed them and their perspective on the dress codes, I asked a few people off they thought dress codes were a good thing to have. I asked a female for and she said in some ways yes, so girls are showing their private parts, but in other ways no because its limiting girls on what they can wear to school. I asked a male as well he said in some ways yes, it's a good idea and in some ways no because it does limit what you can wear.

So from what we have heard from a males and females perspectives they both think different things about the dress code. We know that they both agree and disagree with the dress code.

  7. Did you know that the average student is late almost 3 times a day? Thats alot. Most teachers don't let their students out of the class after the bell has rung, which means that the students have to get everything done during passing time. Bathroom, Locker, Chromebook, Drink, Talking, etc. Many students said they often forget their locker combo, which makes it harder to get to class on time. There are some students who have a bunch of little binders instead of one big binder which means they have to go to their locker between each class. Not to mention how full the hallways are. There are kids flowing like sheeps in a herd.

Here at Bartels Middle School are passing time is limited. It gets very difficult to pass between classes in 3 minutes, passing time use to be four 4 minutes and that was enough but now its 3. With only 3 minutes of passing time a bunch of people are getting late and tardy to class

Take me for example, I have always been a few seconds late to english class and if I was to have another minute I would be on class to time, and i'm sure a lot more people would be on time to. I then proceeded to ask austin about what he thought about the passing time and he said “It’s very short” and he needs to get a drink, and he cant get his locker open. He then said he “was late just about to every class”. I then asked a few other people about what passing time was like for them, most of them said it was short, one person said he barely makes it to class before the bell rings.

A lot of people have to go to the bathroom before class . Sometimes when people get to the classroom late they are asked why they were late and they say they had to go to the bathroom, I've seen this a few times if they had another minute they would have time to go to the bathroom and make it to class without being late.

Most of my classmate think that there should be more passing time where not asking for a lot more passing time just for another minute. Most of us think that if we get a extra minute they would be on time to class.

  9. The transition from Elementary School and Middle School dress code has changed throughout the years. In Elementary School students don’t pay any attention to dress code. That is because they are just little kids. They are wearing colorful colored and characters on their clothes. They are still growing and shouldn’t have to worry about that yet. THey don’t need to know what dress code is and why it’s such a big deal. Once they get to middle school they will start to mature and realize their styles going to change. They are going to want to be in the new “trend,” same as the middle schoolers today.

Dress code is a challenge for a lot of teens. Students walk in school with a hoodie or jacket on, so you never know what they are wearing underneath. It could be appropriate or inappropriate. Therefore throughout the days their outfits have changed. Teachers are constantly telling students to change, but do they listen? Students either listen or give bad attitude back. As dress code gets to be a bigger and bigger deal students are starting to ignore it more and wear worse things than before. Girls wonder why they keep getting dress coded but their answer is because “it’s distracting” or “inappropriate.” Any teacher you ask will say that.

High school has an impact on girls opinions too. “High schoolers can wear this or that.” Teachers are trying to help you so by the time you get to Highschool you know what you should and shouldn’t wear. There’s a problem with that though, once teens get to high school they realize dress code is ignored, so they start wearing what they want. One reason girls keep ignoring it in middle school is because they know they don’t have to follow the dress code in high school. High school is not setting an example for the middle schoolers. Girls aren’t allowed to wear spaghetti straps, crop tops, ripped jeans, and booty shorts. Well then, what should girls wear? These girls want to be in the new “trend.”

What should we know about dress code? It’s a much smaller thing than we think. Girls are just fighting it though because they want to wear what they want. Maybe if it wasn’t such a big topic in school then maybe students would follow it more. “I don’t want to see your belly button,” that is distracting,” I don’t want to see your bra straps.” All these things get said to students everyday. Students say “we go to school to learn not to get dress coded.” Are they wrong? Therefore dress code has changed throughout the lives of students from Elementary to Middle School to High School.

  10. What time do you believe school should start? Middle school some of the students think school should start later in the morning, at nine in the morning. They Are averaging six to seven hours of sleep when the Nationwide Children's hospital say they should get nine and a half hours of sleep.

In the morning when they wake up they move as fast as sloths to get ready for school. Most of them get up early to get ready for school so they can catch the bus and some of them don't even get to eat breakfast and by the time lunch comes around they could eat a horse. They are staying up late if they don't have enough class time to finish their work, or if they're in after school sports and then have to come home clean up and eat then they have to do their homework. But sometimes they procrastinate and go on their phones after school then do their homework later like after they eat their dinner.

Wisconsin school start time typically starts at eight also in the United States the average starting time for school in eight thirty. ¨ school should start later in the morning because are brains don't fully start to function till later.¨ Says researchers say as Melody Wilding. ¨Therefore that is why school should start later then it does.¨ students say.

  11. Bartels Middle School is an average middle school, food, lockers, drama, but mostly bullying. A student had interviewed staff & students on their input about bullying.

One of the teachers admitted that sometimes they are occupied with helping others or teaching to catch bullying. The teacher believes we should have Comprehensive Mental Health programs. This teacher also acknowledges that they are less mean to students, than students are to teachers

Two students at Bartels Middle School were interviewed too. Both don’t get bullied, nor do they bully others. They both like to help others who get bullied. Neither believe that the assembly’s work, and agree with the Comprehensive Mental Health programs will be better. One however had past bullying, and a bit now. Both students, and the teacher think the bullying in this school especially is terrible.

The student who had interviewed the teacher and students, also had an input on the topic. They too, feel that the bullying is terrible. The Comprehensive Mental Health program is a wonderful idea. They, and everyone else interviewed feel that people bully due to at home problems. In which, the Comprehensive Mental Health program would be useful. Everyone has been bullied at least once in their life, an we all can agree that it makes no one feel good. So, let’s try to get rid of bullying!

  12. Overcrowding has been starting to be a problem in schools around Wisconsin. It was just on channel 3 news that Wisconsin dells high school is overcrowding and they are raising money to build a new school and use that one for elementary kids. In BMS kids are getting in trouble for being late to class.

Kate.M states that during passing time it's crowded, getting pushed and shoved. For me getting touched is a problem and makes me uncomfortable. She also said that she can't go to the bathroom or get a drink. She only has time to go to her locker and go to class before the bell rings. If she is late it results to a 30 or 15 minute lunch detention.

Getting through the halls makes BMS students late with all the people in the halls to get through. Jamie Gray says that passing time should be longer, many students agree with that as well. Teachers and students also think that kids who aren't responsible, will take the extra passing time for granted. But the students that take school seriously care about their attendance. These students want to get to class on time and be there to learn so they are prepared for high school. Also to be able to graduate and have a nice career in the future.

  13. The school day at bartels middle school starts at 7:55 and ends at 3:15. A reporter interviewed some kids to ask them what time they think school should start. Most of the kids that were interviewed said that they think that school should start at 9:00.

The kids that were interviewed said that they get around 6-9 hours of sleep. Teenagers are supposed to get 9-10 hours of sleep. When kids get to school their brains are not fully awake. Theri still tired from staying up late the night before. Some scientists say that schools should start at about 8:30 so teens and teachers can catch up on sleep

When teens don't get enough sleep they could have drowsy driving, emotional and behavioral problems and health issues. Some kids are like zombies in the morning. They drag their feet when they walk and instead of brains all they want to do is sleep.

After school ends most people have a snack, do homework, maybe take care of a sibling, have sport practice, take a shower, study for a test, and eat and because of all of that they might not get enough sleep. Many kids said that they would rather have year round school if it meant that school would start later and shorter days. What time do you think that school should start?

  14. Most students believe that dress codes are too strict. Parents think that schools shouldn’t send kids home for dress code, because it’s making them miss a whole day of classes. Last week an interviewer questioned 3 students that attend BMS. One of the questions was “Do you think dress codes are gender based?” The 3 girls told the interviewer that they think more girls get dressed coded then boys. Schools can’t take out the whole dress code but the kids think they should be eased on the kids.

Riley claims “If i could take one think off the dress code it would be shoulder shirts.” One girls said she think guys should get dress coded for sagging their pants. Kid should be able to express themselves but they can’t do that when they have all these restrictions. The dress code from elementary to middle school to high school change a lot.

In elementary school you can wear almost anything you want. In middle school you can’t wear that much, like bandanas, off shoulder shirts, crop tops, rips in ripped jeans have to be below the knee and dresses have to be below the knee, and shorts have to be past the fingertips. High school kids don’t have that many restrictions either. Dress codes are starting to becoming too much, are they schools gonna start making kids wear uniforms?

  15. To students, school starts at the break of dawn, and school does start only a while after the sun rises.

Most students don’t get enough sleep because they wake up long before the starting time to get ready and get to the bus or in the car, and to school on time. Or they go to sleep too late and stay up too late doing homework.

This reporter interviewed some eighth-grade students at Bartels Middle School to see what they had to say. A student said that they didn’t get enough sleep every night and usually got an average of 6-8 hours of sleep every night depending on the day.
This student said her grades are mostly A’s and B’s yet, she feels she doesn’t get enough sleep every night.

This student feels like the rest of her classmates also don’t get enough sleep and that school should start later. She also feels like she can’t focus throughout the day and that school should start at 10 AM because she doesn’t usually get all her homework done.

In conclusion, school should start later so students get enough sleep, don’t feel rushed in the morning, and do things like eat breakfast.

  16. Dresscode
    11/29/18
Middle school is all about expressing yourself and showing your own sense of style. In Bartel’s middle school their dressing style is limited due to the dress code. A reporter went around the school to ask the 8th graders questions. The questions were how long it took them to get dressed? The dressing style, does it affect you? How’s shopping?

How long it took them to them to get dressed? Most students answered that it took them 20-30 minutes. They all mostly added it took them this long because they needed to find an ‘appropriate’ outfit for school. For example in the summer you can’t wear short shorts or tank tops or anything that shows shoulders or tummy. In the winter, fall, spring you can’t wear off shoulder shirt or no rips on jeans above knees or too short of a dress.

The dressing style, does it affect you? One student said “how we dress is our choice and sometimes what we wear isn’t even as revealing as adults think. Is how we dress more important than our education is really missing a day or a class worth it?’ Samantha M. Another student said “Yes, because I can’t express my own sense of style. I can’t show everyone who I am and how I fit into society and well I can’t show me.” Trinity S. Students mostly brought up that they couldn’t show who they really were without getting into trouble. `

How’s shopping? One student said, “It’s hard to shop and express myself with such limited options.“ Wyatt A. Another student said “It’s not fair that our options are so limited like this is America a free country and the country of the free,” said Hannah H. A teacher responded respectfully and said “it is a free country and you are free to do what you want but you are not free of the consequences that your action might bring to you.”

These were the questions and response that the reporter got at Bartels Middle school.

  17. Do you think the school start times are right for students form the ages five to eighteen years old? Well many of the students that were interviewed think that they should have a later school start time,to many students are tired at school or are late to school because they don't get enough sleep.

Based on students opinions many agree that school should start later. Some scientist say that on average middle schools across the country start at 7:55 am. And should start no later than 8:30 am. Students even said that they would rather have year round school if they got shorter days and longer breaks.

Young teens are on average supposed to get nine to eleven hours of sleep, The students that were interviewed said that they only got five to eight hours of sleep which is not enough sleep. When you have to get up at 5:30 am. And don't go to bed until 11:00 pm. You might be thinking that it was their fault that they went to bed late, but when they have after school activities like sports you have games and practice and dont get home till 9:00 pm. Students still have to do homework, take a shower, eat supper and by the time they are don with all of that its 11:00 pm. After all of the information you have learned so you think schools should have shorter school days.
