Chasing Lincoln's Killer - My Thoughts

Reading Class
For February 26, 2014

As you read chapter 6, you needed to think of one thing that you would like to discuss with your group.  Instead of a face to face conversation, we're going to have an online one with the blog.

Here's how you start.  Begin by sharing the topic that stood out to you, then follow up with your thoughts about that topic.

Then, reply to other comments with your thoughts!

Let me give you an example from Watsons go to Birmingham:
Topic:  The part that shocked me was when Kenny got tricked into losing all of his dinosaurs.
My thoughts:  Isn't he supposed to be the smartest kid in 5th grade?  Shouldn't he know better?  Why was another kid able to trick him?  Part of me thinks it might be because he is such a kind and trusting kid.  He always believes the best about others and is able to forgive people quickly.  Even though he lost his stuff, I think that I would rather be like Kenny and believe the best in people.

The Universe - Textbook Reading Assignment

Science Class

This week, we will be wrapping up our space unit.  As we do this, let's go back to some of those big ideas about space.  We're going to be using our textbook to investigate the topic more in-depth.  The link has a list of all of the questions.  Your answers will go on a piece of notebook paper, so you don't need to make a copy.

When you are done, post the most interesting thing you've learned during the whole unit.  Tell what it is, why you think it's interesting, etc.  Then reply to others' comments.

What are you investigating?

Language Arts
February 19, 2014

We've been working on the Multi-Modal project for a bit now.  In fact, the body of the essay will be written in class today.  After you write your body paragraphs, share what you've been up to.  What did you choose to investigate?  What is your topic?  Why did you pick it?  What have you found so far?

I've got a sample posted as the first comment.

Take a look at what others are doing and reply to their comments.  (More than just "cool")

Abraham Lincoln

Reading Class
February 12, 2014

Before we really get started reading Chasing Lincoln's Killer, let's look at who the author calls the most important figure in the story, Abraham Lincoln.  It's his birthday, so it sort of makes today the perfect day to learn more about him, right?

We will be doing a K-W-H-L; however, we will do the H part of it together by watching a documentary about Lincoln.

When you are done, comment on this post.  Share the most interesting thing you learned about Abraham Lincoln.

Is Pluto a Planet? - Planet Test

Science
February 6 &7

We're going to do something a little bit different as a test for this unit.  We will be taking everything we have learned about planets to determine wether or not Pluto is a planet.  You will be writing an argument about your opinion.  This argument will count as a test score.  All you need to know about the test is on the sheet.  READ the directions and FOLLOW them :)

You will have work time Thursday and Friday.  The test will be due by Monday.

Do not post your argument on the blog as this one is a test.

Using Computer Code

Reading Class
February 5, 2014 - Digital Learning Day

When the scientists at JPL needed to tell Opportunity to save all of it's resources and basically shut down for 3 days during the dust storm on Mars, they told it using computer code.  In fact, all of the messages to the rovers were written in computer code.  But what is code?

Let's take some time during digital learning day to explore computer code.  When you are done, write a blog entry about what you saw, learned, did today.

Neptune Rap

Science Class
February 4, 2014

This will be a FACE partner activity.  You and your partner will find information about the planet Neptune that you will share with your class members.  Instead of just writing the facts down, however, you will be creating a rap.  Don't get so carried away with the rap that you forget to include important facts about Neptune.

Before you start, you will complete the Neptune Warm up.  Show it to me when you have a 5/5.  Then you can start on the Neptune Rap.

When you're done.  Copy and paste your rap onto the blog so we can see everyone's work!

QR Code Activity - Uranus

Science Class

February 3, 2014

We will be doing several things to learn about Uranus during this activity.  We'll start with a warm-up and then continue with a QR Code activity.

Warm-Up - Read the information about Uranus and take the quiz.  Raise your hand and show me when you have a 5/5.

Do not move on until we're all ready to go!!!

QR Code Reader - You're going to have to get an app from the Chrome Store.  Download "The QR Code Generator".

How to make it work - Click on Scan so that you can use your chromebook's webcam to read the QR codes.  You will have to click on "Allow Access" in the top toolbar when it asks.

After that - Put the QR codes up to your webcam and go to the websites.  While there look for the answers to the questions on the sheet (which is below).  Once the sheet is done, share it with me!
