Trinity

We've been discussing the book with our table groups.  Now it's time to branch out and find out what others that are reading this book think.  Take some time to think about a part of the book that would make for a good discussion.  It can be any part from the beginning to the part you read for today.

Tell about the part you read, give your thoughts about it, and invite others to share their thoughts too.

Here are some discussion stems.  Choose one of the following or make a similar type of post.

I want to talk about the part where __________________.  I thought _____________________.  What did you think?

The part that I thought was most interesting so far was _____________________________.  I think _________________________________________.  What did you think?

  1. I want to talk about how the Americans got all of the materials to make the bomb. I thought the author would have told all of the information about how the Americans got the materials and where they got it from but the author didn't so it made the process of making the bomb a little bit confusing. What did you think?

    1. I also thought it was a little confusing, but after that I pulled up a periodic table on my computer and as I thought, uranium and plutonium are radioactive.

  2. I want to talk about when the first nuclear bomb went off. I really think it was interesting how the author did it, with oppenheimer looking back to that moment, and what was said. Particularly when it as mentioned that the bomb is no longer science, but politics, war, and diplomacy. What do you think?

    1. I think this is very interesting also how they did it and why wouldn't it be science anymore? Because they chemicals they used they found out they weren't made by scientest.

    2. I agree with Mykenza and you need to explain it a little more, but I understood what you were saying. It was a clever idea for using dominos as the example for unstableness.

    3. I get the refference from the book with the dominos ,but the rest of the question does not make sence.

  4. I would like to talk about the part where the United States dropped the bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. I thought that it was pretty emotional to me because of the suffering of that kid that had a torn shirt and a burnt body. The pain and suffering looked pretty hard to handle and I thought it was just a terrible thing to see because nobody deserves to go through that much pain. What did you think?

    1. I thought this was very scary, and if i was that kid i would have been very scared and would have wanted to know what happend after that.

    2. I thought it looked very scary because that kid was just walking home and from there it shows pain that the people who droped the bomb did not see it coming.

    3. I agree landon but the we were also just doing what we had to do to end the war. It could have been longer if we didn't make the decisions to drop the bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki after what they did to us at Pearl Harbor.

    4. I thought It was scary but we had to end the war somehow and so many other people were dying on the front lines

  5. I would like talk about the part when they make the first bomb and all the chemicals they ha to mix to be able to make the atomic bomb, how long do you think it would take for them to do this and why would it take this long? I also thought this was very interesting cause it didn't seem like it took them very long. What do you think?

    1. I think that it took a long time to find elements that are radioactive, so my guess would be that it took around four years to find the elements. If I was one of the scientists finding the elements, I would have been scared of the Nazi, Japanese Imperialists, and Fascist Italians finding and taking me prisoner, so they could know the secrets. Overall, amazing question.

    2. I think even sence it doesn't seam like a long time they were doing for over a few years but most of the time was to get/make those chemicals.

  6. I want to talk about the part where they made the bomb but they were so secert that they had to move familys there. I thought that they realy didn't need it that secert people would get in either way. What did you think??

    1. I think that when you're dealing with atomic bombs and stuff, you need to make it that secretive. There are so many lives at risk when you're dealing with atomic bombs. And you don't want other countries to create the bombs before you because they could bomb you.

    2. I thought they did need that amount of security because if they didn't the japanese spies would somehow get it

  7. I want to talk about the picture and just the all around page of the big explosion on page 76. I thought it is so far the best picture in the book and is very interesting, it is a great example of the explosion that took place and the worlds that explained what was going on were so good. What did you think?
