Titanic: Voices from the Disaster

We've been discussing the book with our table groups.  Now it's time to branch out and find out what others that are reading this book think.  Take some time to think about a part of the book that would make for a good discussion.  It can be any part from the beginning to the part you read for today.

Tell about the part you read, give your thoughts about it, and invite others to share their thoughts too.

Here are some discussion stems.  Choose one of the following or make a similar type of post.

I want to talk about the part where __________________.  I thought _____________________.  What did you think?

The part that I thought was most interesting so far was _____________________________.  I think _________________________________________.  What did you think?

  1. I want to talk about the part where they said that the boat was 7.5 million. Also how much food they said they brought on. That is a lot of money going down the drain. They lost so much food and money. What do you think.
The part I thought was most interesting so far was the part were they were trying to get everyone off the boat. I think this because it is cool to listen to how they reacted and how scared I would be. What are your thoughts.

    1. well they couldn't save the food there would be no place for people to sit

    2. i looked up how much 7.5 million dollars would be today and it would almost be 150 billion dollars

    3. I think saving their lives and their family's life was more of a problem than money and food.

    4. I don't think that the thought of how much money and food they were losing even went through their minds when they were trying to save people's lives.

  2. I want to talk about how they treat first class people better then second class people. They are both people they should be treated the same. Why did the women have like there only little area for the first class ladies.

    1. I think that first class should be treated better then second, because they paid more than the second class.

  3. Why did they one try to get the first class people off first

    1. They wanted to get them off first because they paid more. So they thought back then that if you paid more you were a better person. Which is not true because I get third class and I'm a stud so... They were very weird in there thinking.

    2. They also may have tried to get them off first to clear the area for passengers from other classes could get on. I think that it was more the 1st class passengers being arrogant by dropping the lifeboats right away then the crew members trying to "save" them first.

    3. Were the first class cabins closer to the top of the boat where the life boats were? Could they have gotten there first?

  4. I want to talk about the part where they brought all the food on the boat. I thought that was a lot of food with 75,00 pounds of meat; 11,000 pounds of fish; 10,00 pounds of sugar, and more is a lot for over 2,200 people. What did you think?
The part that was most interesting so far was when the Titanic was sinking and they were trying to get off the boat to save their lives. What did you think?

    1. I thought the same thing. I thought that was way too much food. But then again they also wanted enough food that they could feed everyone. But also lots of that food went to waste.

    2. They had so many people on the boat and wanted to get them feed

  5. I want to talk about the part where they said they did not have eanough life boats. I think since everybody thought that the boat was unsinkable, they did not even think about the possibilities of it sinking. I think though that even if it was unsinkable they still should of had eanough because there are other reasons why they would need one. I wonder if they would have had eanough if everybody would have been saved. What were your thoughts?
The part that I thought was most interesting was the part were everybody had to get off of the boat and see how everybody reacted.

    1. I agree. They should've been prepared for anything

  6. The part I want to talk about is when the people first found out that the ship was going to sink and how panicked some were while others such as the band just continued on without making much of a commotion. It would have been really hard for me to continue playing knowing I was going to die. What do you think?
The part I have found most interesting is how everyone was obviously panicking when it was sinking but the fact that they just continued to drop life boats instead of waiting for them to be filled to capacity. I'm sure there was some sort of logic to it but I still think that it is crazy that they would do that. What do you think?

    1. Well what would you do. i would panic

    2. I was very suprised about the part where it said that not everybody was not panicked, I know that in that situation I would for sure panic.

  7. I want to talk about how third class vs first class's meals and dinners were like. I thought that the people in third class should of had better food because what they were getting served was not good at all. What did you think?

The part that I thought was most interesting so far was how they built the titanic. I think it's cool to know what happend while building a multi ton boat that was supposedly unsinkable. What did you think?

    1. I think the same thing. Even though they didn't get paid a lot they still are on a awesome curse and still should get good food. I totally agree.

    2. I think that first class should get better food because they paid more than the third class. They said it was unsinkable, and yet it sunk on its first voyage.

    3. I agree. I thought that even though third class was the poorest people or the people to pay the least, they should still get an appealing cruise. Even though nothing turned out well in the end by the "unsinkable" ship, the cruise (I would think) was still pretty nice.

    4. I agree with you, but if the Titanic still needs to make money and if you searved everybody the same even though they did not pay what 1st class did. I do though think that everybody should have been treated equally.

  8. Why did they try to only get the first class people off and not all of them.

    1. Since the people on first class paid more for the trip, they value those people more. Also the workers on the Titanic thought that there was no way saving the second class and third class.

  9. I want to talk about the part where people started going on lifeboats but some of them didn't have supplies. I thought that some of the life boats got checked and stolen from and that's why some people didn't have much food, water or useful things. What did you think? The part that I thought was most interesting so far was right before the Titanic sank. I think everyone was too calm and was too worried about others freaking out other than sinking because the Titanic was "unsinkable". What did you think?

    1. I think that some people were actually really calm, but others were freaking out and trying to get into the life boats. That was one of the parts that interested me the most too.
