They Called Themselves the KKK

We've been discussing the book with our table groups.  Now it's time to talk with your friends from other classes that are also reading this book.  Take some time to think about a part of the book that would make for a good discussion.  It can be any part from the beginning to the part you read for today.

Tell about the part you read, give your thoughts about it, and invite others to share their thoughts too.

Here are some discussion stems:

I want to talk about the part where __________________.  I thought _____________________.  What did you think?

The part that I thought was most interesting so far was _____________________________.  I think _________________________________________.  What did you think?

  1. I want to talk about the part where Where tey talked about who the grand cyclops on page 41. I thought it was confusing. What did you think?

The part that I thought was most interesting so far was where they talked about how the KKK started. I think it was weird how they started just to scare people I thought they always were killing black people. What did you think?

    1. I reread that page, and I agree. It was confusing, and I can relate to you thinking that they started by killing. I never thought that they started with just scaring.

    2. I don't think that it was too confusing, but I do understand you point. On page 25-26, they explain what all of the positions mean, but they are very weird and easy to forget, so I understand your pain.

    3. I agree. I thought they were always a racist group. I didn't realize that they didn't start off like that. I wonder how they developed into killing people. It could have been the new members.

  2. I want to talk about the part where white teacher Cornelius McBride survived the attack of KKK. I thought that there was no way he would survive and get away from the klan, he was outnumbered they shot and stabbed at him. What did you think about this?

    1. I think it is a miracle that he lived. the kkk underestimated him and he lived. would anyone believe him?

    2. I was thinking the same thing. I never would've thought that he would've gotten out of that. Even though he did get away I still thought that he would've been caught or at least died out in the woods because he still had some pretty bad wounds.

    3. I thought he was gonna be dead for sure after I re read that.

  3. The part that I thought was most interesting so far was when they explained how they initiated someone in to the klan. I think it was really weird/creepy because, before i read this I thought that you would just join the klan if you wanted to be part of it. I didn't know that there would be all this stuff you'd have to go through (like fill out an application and do this weird song initiation thing). What did you think?

    1. I though It was weird. why would you do that. some of the things they said were also creepy. what do you think it would be like for initiation now.

    2. I thought that if the people the KKK made someone join and if they didn't join, that person would be whipped, or maybe even killed.

    3. I thought it was strange how they did that. I also thought that the initiation where they made them read a poem, was strange. I thought they would make it easier to get into the KKK, so that they would have more members.

    4. I think that it was weird, too. They had a point in doing all of it though. They made it weird because that was one of the core concepts of the clan. This made it stand out and harder to understand.

    5. I thought that was creepy too.If I was going to join a klan I wouldn't do that,but I wouldn't join a klan like this.

    6. I thought is was weird how they would do that. I don't get why they would do that but it's what they wanted. I'd imagine that the people joining the klan thought it was weird at first too.

  4. I want to talk about the part where the kkk went to the baptist church and killed 5 men. (pg.98-100) the killed four and then let the last man write a note. I would never do anything like that but I don't think I would have the power to stop it. what do you think?

  6. I want to talk about the part where the Arsonists torched 10 or 12 barns on page 117. I thought that it would be crazy to do all this in 1 weeks time. What did you think?

  7. I want to talk about the part where the Klans coding is described on pages 41 and 46. I thought that it was very confusing, and wondered how they would be able to remember all of their coding. What dd you think?

    1. That part was really confusing. I think they must have wrote the coded words down somewhere, or else they wouldn't have remembered. I also wonder how they got the new members to remember and how they knew to trust them.

    2. I think that that stuff is really confusing too. I guess that if you now it long enough to start to learn it by heart. Maybe that's how they do it.

    3. I also agreed. It was very confusing, to the klan it was probably easy, but not to me.

    4. I agree that the codes and names of the people were very confusing. I thought that it was a good idea for the Klan, because the other outsiders would have no idea what they were talking about.

  8. I want to talk about the part where they started the KKK. I thought it was strange how they claimed it was started as a fun club, and just happened to turn into a racist group. I think that they planned on targeting black people, and that they couldn't have just changed it that fast. Why would they agree to change their club's meaning? What do you think?

    2. I can agree with that, I don't quite get as to why they didn't do a name change because it makes them sound disorganized. I think that it's very confusing on how they talked about the Klan starting with six men, then in the next few words its filled with people.

    3. I do think that it was strange about the klan all of the sudden targeting black people. I think the Klan attacked the blacks because they were unhappy about their slaves being free and they were scared the free slaves would take the white men's jobs.

    4. I agree with that, I don't get why they would do that. They just wanted to have more people in their klan.

  9. I think that the most confusing/interesting part of the books is on page 66. The democrats tried to get black people to vote democrat by showing them "Role model for the freeman" which just means that they had black democrats. My question is how that they got black people go democrat, considering that they both hated each other so much. They also could have been forced or bribed into that position. What do you think?

    1. I can see where you're coming from, I reread the page and was kinda confused when they put down that: "Black democrats were viewed as traitors."
