Unbroken

We've been discussing the book with our table groups.  Now it's time to talk with your friends from other classes that are also reading this book.  Take some time to think about a part of the book that would make for a good discussion.  It can be any part from the beginning to the part you read for today.

Tell about the part you read, give your thoughts about it, and invite others to share their thoughts too.

Here are some discussion stems:

I want to talk about the part where __________________.  I thought _____________________.  What did you think?

The part that I thought was most interesting so far was _____________________________.  I think _________________________________________.  What did you think?

  1. I want to talk about the part where the Japanese doctors injected Phil and Louie with the murky solution on page 143. I think that it wasn't actually a treatment they were trying out. I think the guards just wanted to see if it would kill the Americans. What did you think?

    1. When I read that section I thought that they were doing this to try to make a substance that could treat the sick better than all of the other substances that they had. But, I can see what you are trying to get at because it talks about how they kept on getting infected with this substance that just made them feel worse and worse, And on top of that they had them take more and more of this bad substance.

    2. I reread that section, and I disagree. I think that it was a treatment and they were testing it out. They probably wanted to test it out on people they didn't care about in case it killed them.

      Delete
    3. I think that you are right. I think that they just injected them with that stuff to see if they could use that injection to get rid of people. Mostly Americans though. I think that when they would inject them with the medicine or potion or substance, they would do it to see what it does to the human body and how it effects different people. I don't think that doing that was right.

    4. I reread that section and I dissagree. I think this because they gave it to them more than 1 time they gave it to them like 5 times. I think it was a treatment and they were trying to see if it would work that's why they gave it to them so many times each time they put something new in it each time to try and make it better.

    5. I reread that section and I agree with you.I think that they gave it to them so many times because the first shot didn't kill them,so they kept trying.

    6. After rereading the section, I believe that it was a solution that they were testing as something they could use as torture on more valuable prisoners. I don't think that they really cared whether it killed them or not. No matter what it was, it was a very wrong thing to do.

    7. In this part I think they are injecting them with the fluid because they want to see if it would work with bio warfare.

    8. I reread that section and I disagree with you. I think that they they gave the medicine to them to torture them. Kind of as a way of showing them what they could do if they were bad or annoying.

    9. I agree that the Japanese were just seeing if they could kill the Americans with it.

  2. I want to talk about the part of the book when they were "Torturing" Louie and Phil by having a really nice guy guard their cell on chapter 18. If I were the one who let a nice guy take care of the prisoners cell I would probably fire that guy, If I were in his mind of course. The main reason why I say this is because the book is talking about how the Japanese try to torture you by giving you no honor, but that is thrown out of the window because of this really nice guy being honorable. What do you think?

  3. I want to talk about the part where they were captured and got on the second boat pages 133-135. I think it was interesting how nice they were to them. I wonder if the were just trying to gain trust. The part I find most interesting so far is the Olympics. I found it fascinating that he could run a mile so fast. What do you think?

    1. When I reread that section I agree with how you were interested in how nice they are. In my opinion I think that they were just trying to get him into a good mood so that they wouldn't see the pain that was coming to him in the camp that he was about to go to. I also found it interesting that Louie could run a mile in under 5 minutes. When I read that section I didn't think that anyone could beat him except for who I believe to be the fastest man alive, Usain Bolt. But, If there were to be Olympics right before Louie downfall I think that he could've proved to get in the late 3 minutes. The reason why I think this is because when the book discussed how fast Louie's mile was they said that he beat his record with 4 minutes and 13 seconds while running in the SAND. If he were in the Olympics he would've won.

    2. I think that they were just being nice to them so they could tear them down later, but that part kind of got to me too. Like, why would you be so nice to them when we have heard all of these things about during World War 2 how the Japanese were so mean to Americans and Jews. I think that part of the book kind of messed with me and got to me a little because of how different it was from what we have learned, and how different Japanese people and different Japanese place treated people.

      Delete
    3. I reread this section and was again confused. It doesn't make any sense how they went from super nice, polite, and respectful to horrible, mean guards. What was the point of that? Was it just until they found out who they were and why they were there? It was very strange though how sudden they changed.

      Delete
    4. I think that they were just nice people at least the ones on the boat and some on the island. Other than that I think that some of them weren't as nice and caring and that's why Kawamura was gone.

      Delete
    5. I agree with you on the part where you said it was surprising how fast he could run. I was surprised by that as well. I also agree with the fact that when they got onto the second boat they were treating them very generously. I thought it was weird when they treated them well and then when they got off the boat those people weren't very nice at all.

      Delete
    6. I agree with you. I think that the reason why they were so nice to them is because they didn't want them to freak out or run away. They just wanted to gain trust, so all of the prisoners would think they are in a good place, but later on they were very rude.

      Delete
    7. I reread that section and I am also confused at why the guards were nice to Louie and Phil, but then suddenly turned hostile. I think that the guards were genuinely being nice to them, but became hostile when they were approaching the "Execution Island" because they knew that Louie and Phil were American soldiers, and that most Japanese were against the Americans at that time. I think that the crewman who captured Louie and Phil were just acting hostile to Louie and Phil around other Japanese who weren't a part of their crew because of this.

      Delete
    8. I reread this part, and I agree with you. I was also confused when they were treating them like one of their own. I mean, they're Japanese, it's not like them to treat American soldiers like this. I think that maybe they weren't sure who they were at first, so they just decided to be nice to them. But, when they figured out who they were, started being very rude and mean to them. I was also amazed that he could run that fast. Beating all of those records is very impressive!

  4. I want to talk about how the guard was farting on all of the people that were locked up. I think that it was not right for the guard to do that to all of those inmates, and why would he fart on them? Would the guard just do for fun or was he directed to do so? Did he/she think that it was funny? Or was there a reason for that kind of behavior. I don't think that it was right for the guard to do that to everyone, and the inmates that he didn't do it to, were very lucky because there is no point in farting on all of them. What do you think about this situation?

    1. I reread that part of the book, and I dont think it was right.Yet there did a lot worse things to the inmates.

      Delete
    2. I agree that it was wrong because the prisoners have gone through enough bad treatment and the last thing they need is a guard farting on them.

      Delete
    3. I reread that part of the book and I don't think that he was told to do that. The number one reason why I say this is because the guards that worked there liked to dishonor the inmates. The reason why they dishonored them is because when the inmates got beat they started to lose hope which is Japan's way of torturing them.

      Delete
    4. I agree I think that it is very rude to fart on people. I think he thought it was very funny and meant it to be a joke. I don't understand why he would do that, but yet it could have been way worse.

I want to talk about the part where Louie and Phil were hauled onto to the Japaniese boat on pages 133-134.I want to know why the Jappaniese were so nice to them, when they were captured. Why were the Japaniese giving them madical treatment and food?I thought that at the time The Japaniese and the Americans were sworn eniemes. What did you think?

    1. I think that they could just be nice people. I mean yes they had to be somewhat mean to kill people in the war but whatever.

    2. I think that they are just being nice to the Americans. Maybe they were just being a soldier because they were forced into it.

  6. I want to talk about the part when Louie and Phil were first captured on pages 132 to 133. I'm confused because at first, the sailors were rude and mean to Phil and Louie; they tied up their hands, "cracked a pistol" into their jaws, and cut off their beards. But then all of the sudden, the sailors treated them well by giving then lots of food and so on. Then once they got to the island, Louie and Phil were once again mistreated.

    1. I know that part was so confusing. The whole time I thought that that's how they treated all their prisoners, like good cop bad cop.(secretly I was hoping they would just be jerks,so you know,it not confusing) Though I think they were trying to confuse them to get answers on their plans. I think that because that's what I would do.

  7. I want to talk about the part where the Japanese put Phil and Louie in a run down jail cell. I wonder why the Japanese didn't send Phil and Louie to be executed on the island. What do you think?

    1. I reread that part, and I was also confused on why they did that. My thinking is that it had something to do with the Japanese wanting to get more American war secrets from Phil and Louie. I think another possibility is that they wanted to keep Louie alive because he was a very famous olympian.

      Delete
    2. I read the section again, and I think that the Japanese thought they could get valuable secrets out of Louie and Phil. By putting them in solitary confinement, they believed they would be able to get them to give up war secrets.

  8. I reread that part, and I agree. I was really confused. I didn't understand why different places treated them so differently even though it was the same country.

  9. I want to talk about the part where Louie, Phil, and Mac were attacked by the great white shark on pages 126-128. I thought that it was strange that the shark attacked them because these days we hear about how sharks don't try to hurt humans unless they do something to the sharks. What do you think?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I agree, I was also wondering the shark attacks. I also think that our view of sharks has changed a little...soon after the crash, the book mentioned that Louie was thinking about sharks and how much everyone hated them.

      Delete
    2. I can see why the shark attacked them because great white sharks are very vicious and will attack anything that is smaller than them.

      Delete
    3. I sort of agree, I think that they attacked them because the shark probably mastaked them as a seal or other small mamale. They don't try to hurt them but they must of mastaken then for a seal. The truth is sharks don't even like the taste of human.

      Delete
    4. I see your point, because I don't hear much of sharks trying to hurt humans this badly, or this much. If you think about it, the three men were attacked many, many times while they were floating in the ocean. The sharks wouldn't give up, and they just kept coming back. I'm thinking that at first, the sharks were hungary and smelt blood, so they decided to attack. But, then after the men kept hitting them with their ores, they got defensive and kept trying to attack.

  10. I think that they didn't execute them because they wanted to question them. They wanted all the information they could about the American bases and secrets.

  11. I want to talk about the part where Louie and Phil were given the "murky solution" in the syringes on page 143. After Louie and Phil were injected with this solution, they felt extremely dizzy, they felt like pins were jabbing their bodies, they felt light-headed, and their skin was burning and itching. I don't think that I would have been able to survive that solution, because it sounds that it was very painful and thousands of people had died when they were injected with the solution. I would have probably given in to the Japanese, and it really makes me glad that Louie and Phil did not give in to the Japanese. What do you think?

  12. I want to talk about how he was such a naughty child. He stole lots of things and tricked lots of people. one page 7-10. Most of the things he had done would never get by today. I don't think that I would ever do those things. What do you think?

    4. I reread that section, and I agree. It is very unlikely that anybody would be able to do all of the things Louie did and get away with it. They would most likely end up going to prison or Juvy. I am surprised that Louie's parents couldn't handle Louie that well. If I had been his parents, I would have severely punished him. I know that I would have never done any of the naughty things that Louie did!

    5. I agree but you have to admit that some of the thing he did at his young age was pretty funny. Like when he ran across the street naked when he was very young.

    6. I reread that section, and I agree. It is very unlikely that anybody could have done all of the naughty things that Louie did as a child and gotten away with it. 7. I agree, he was a very naughty child. During this part, I couldn't believe what I was reading. He did many crazy and horrible things as a kid, and most times he didn't even get in trouble. Another thing that I was confused about was when he came back home from the Olympics and was showered with love from the town. Did the town just forget about about all the terrible things he did in that town before?

  13. I want to talk about the part when Mac ate the last of their food while they were floating out in the middle of the ocean after the crash. This is on pages 107 and 108. I thought that that was terrible of him to do that, because it eventually could take the lives of the two other men that survived. And, Louie didn't even get that mad at him for doing that! If it were me I would have told Mac that he would have to catch his own food from now on if he wanted to survive. What do you think?

    1. I reread this part and I agree with you that it was very wrong of Mac to do that. I also wondered why Mac was almost never happy or a team player (except for when he saved Louie) before he died. I say this because even though Louie and Phil weren't thrilled with the situation, they still tried to focus and good things.

      Delete
    2. That was not smart of Mac to eat all of the food that they had on the life raft. They would have had an easier time on the life raft if he hadn't of eaten all of the food.

      Delete
    3. I agree I think that it was very selfish of him to do that. I am also very surprised that Louie didn't yell at because if I was Louie I would freak out. Another thing is that out of all three men in the raft Mac was the one who died, so he probably would have lived if he wouldn't have ate all the food.

      Delete
    4. I reread that section and I agree with you that Mac eating the rest of the food that they had was terrible and selfish! If I were Louie, I definitely would have been mad at Mac, however I would not tell him that he has to catch his own food to survive. Instead, I would probably tell him that he would get smaller portions of the food that they had obtained.

      Delete
    5. I agree with you. He should never have eaten all that food, who knew how long they were going to be out there. Saving the food would have helped them. I would have been mad at him as well. They could have had that food and the fish that they caught, and that would have lasted them a while.

  14. I want to talk about the part where Louie was pelting policemen with with rotten tomatoes on pg. 10. It acted like the police officer didn't do anything. I thought that it was crazy that Louie was pelting tomatoes in the first place but, at a police officer. The police officer didn't do anything. If you did that now you would certainly get tazed and arrested. What did you think?

  16. I want to talk about Kawamura and how he was so nice to Louie and Phil. I am very surprised not any other men noticed he was being nice to them because he turned in one Japanese guard because he was beating Louie. What do you think?

    1. I think that you are right! I was so sad at the end of that chapter because I think that they killed Kawamura! I think that he was a very nice guard, and I am glad that he was "working" there when Louie and Phil came to that camp because otherwise, they would be hurting right now, and I don't think that they would have been very happy with that even thought they aren't happy right now with where they are at. I thought that it was awesome and a great thing that Louie and Phil met Kawamura, and I can't believe how nice he was to both of them. Even when he told on that guard for being mean to Louie and Phil. He was a brave man.

  17. I want to talk about the part were Louie was running in that race at page 42-44. How the coaches tole there runner to hurt louie. Then mostley all the runners started shouldering him and punching and even steped on his foot and leg during the race. I think that the coaches were just really mad that louie was beating all the kids there were coaching so they tried to hurt him so he couldn't compete anymore, and lose that race. What do you think?

    1. I agree with you. I think that the coaches were somewhat jealous or wanted to get at Louie for always beating their athletes in the races. In my opinion they shouldn't have made the athletes beat him up. At least Louie knew what to do and didn't thrash out at them, he just went on.
