Pure Grit

We've been discussing the book with our table groups.  Now it's time to talk with your friends from other classes that are also reading this book.  Take some time to think about a part of the book that would make for a good discussion.  It can be any part from the beginning to the part you read for today.

Tell about the part you read, give your thoughts about it, and invite others to share their thoughts too.

Here are some discussion stems:

I want to talk about the part where __________________.  I thought _____________________.  What did you think?

The part that I thought was most interesting so far was _____________________________.  I think _________________________________________.  What did you think?

  1. I want to talk about the part where the Japanese would shoot the prisoners if they tried to escape. Many were shot because of their attempts to climb the fencing to escape. I thought that they should have found a different way to punish them for attempted escape. Killing them seems a little harsh. That is taking their life and not letting them live to see another day. What did you think about this part of the book?

    1. I think this could be a good topic because it could give us a lot more information.

    2. I reread the section and I somewhat agree. However being killed would be better than being tortured for hours. But taking them away from other nurses and have them be alone for a day would be better than death.

  2. What did you think about the nurses having multiple nightmares?(Page 99) I thought that it would slowly start to drive me insane if I were to have that many in one go. I would eventually try to escape the war and it would make everything worse if I was under that much stress.

    1. I had to reread that section because I thought it was hard for me to believe at first. So many nightmares! I also thought that nightmares would slowly drive me insane. I think that it would give people anxiety and stress. This must have been pretty hard on a lot of people.

    2. I think that I would have tried to escape if I had all these nightmares but then I would have tried to stay because if I would try to escape it could put my life in danger.

  3. On page 74, I think that the nurses (prisoners) should have had stall doors because without them it invades their privacy.

    1. I also agree, this is invading their personal space. This is a bare necessity that everyone has to do. I think that doors would also reduce stress and anxiety. It would make people more comfortable too.

    2. I reread and I agree. This would take down stress and provide them with a place of privacy. However this would not be the first order of business and they should spend their time improving something more critical than to fix the stalls.

  4. I would like to talk about page 98. I thought that they should give everybody more meats and food since people are growing more weak everyday. I don't think that they should give JUST the nurses more meats, they should give everybody more meats. What do you think?

    1. I agree with this topic. I believe that everyone should be treated the same. The nurses worked, but the people also worked too. They had to find every last bit of food they could. The nurses and people should have been treated the same. They are both human.

    2. I think this would be a good topic to talk about because it could give us some more information about how the living conditions were at the prison

  5. I want to talk about when the americans came and why they didn't come sooner, because the military in that point of time was HUGE. I think they could've come sooner what do you think.

    1. I reread the section and I agree, they could of come sooner. However the military was also dealing with many other different circumstances. At the time little troops could be spared so I am sure the americans did the best they could.

    2. I don't agree. I think they came when they thought that they were ready and strong enough to defeat the Japanese. If they came earlier they may have gotten more men killed, or injured. They needed to build machines, the army and have a plan to rescue the POWS and defeat the Japanese. I think that they came in good timing. They saved many POWS.
