An American Plague

We've been discussing the book with our table groups.  Now it's time to talk with your friends from other classes that are also reading this book.  Take some time to think about a part of the book that would make for a good discussion.  It can be any part from the beginning to the part you read for today.

Tell about the part you read, give your thoughts about it, and invite others to share their thoughts too.

Here are some discussion stems:

I want to talk about the part where __________________.  I thought _____________________.  What did you think?

The part that I thought was most interesting so far was _____________________________.  I think _________________________________________.  What did you think?

  1. I would like to talk about the part where the book explained Dr. Benjamin Rush's cure on page 61. I think that the Dr. Rush's cure would only make people more sick with all of the poisonous plants in it. What did you think about this? This was the part that I found most interesting . But, I also think that it is a little disturbing.

    1. I think that you have a good point about Dr. Rush's cure. All of those plants couldn't be very good for them and how much blood they're losing with it. It seems like they could get a different disease from this cure.

    2. I don't think it made people sicker. It did give them diarrhea and make them vomit only to remove the disease from their system. I do agree though it is slightly disturbing.

    3. I think that the poisonous plants were used to draw the disease from the patient's body by making it come out through vomiting. I was a little suspicious of this at first, but then I thought about how it some medications today do the same thing.

    4. I think that the poisons could also make the people more sick. I also believe that even though it wasn't very effective, it still could have some potential to help. Even though it is a little skeptical and didn't really work, maybe if the people in our generation could explore what he used, maybe they could make it safer for people to actually use.

  2. I want to talk about that part where Dr. Rush started bleeding patients. I though that was interseting becuase he had saved 29 out of 30 people. Yet others were saying his cure was ineffective. Would did you think about this?

    1. I read that section and thought that it was interesting that even though Dr. Rush was giving people poison it saved them. I thought that the 10 and 10 cure would only kill more people not save them.

    2. I read that section and now that you mention that, I thought that it was sort of natural because in this time people were just exploring medicine and when all else failed, they could only use what they knew from their ancestors.

  3. I want to talk about the part where Doctors were making people with the yellow fever, digest poisons. I thought that was insane. I also thought that this would make someone's condition worse if they already have the yellow fever. What do you think?

    1. I agree because the description of those plants sounded not very good for your body. And when you bodies already fighting off the Yellow Fever I think that it would be even more fatal if they added another disease on top of that. I don't think there would be enough time if someone had to dangerous illnesses coursing through their bodies.

    2. I think they did this just to see if anything could work. Because at this point, the sick people would try anything, anything to get better. They just wanted to see if poisons would help the fevers. I think maybe they did this to somehow see if it had something to do with the yellow fever.

      Delete
    3. Yeah, wouldn't that just make their condidtion worse. I also think that they were desperate so they tried anything to see if it would work.

    4. I think that it was not very smart to have them take poison. What if it made their disease worse?

  4. I want to talk about the part where it rained.I thought that it was weird that they thought rain would help them.I think that the part where it rained was one of the worst times for the people. What did you think about this?

    1. I also thought it was weird. Why would rain wash away the plague? You would think, that the people would of thought, that the rain would of made the fever spread.

    2. I think this is a good topic do discuss as well. Personally, I believe that the rain actually did help them because it seemed to sort of clean the streets. I do also think that it could be worse as well because it could have given them a higher risk of getting the fever even worse.

  5. I want to talk about the part on page 23 when it talks about how the poor people were left do die instead of given help escaping or feeling better. I think that the people that were struggling in many ways, should have been the first people to be assisted to safety. I honestly don't know what I would do in that situation because sometimes I really don't know what to do under pressure and I think that going through a deadly fever would be kind of pressurizing. What do you think?

    1. I think it would've been scary and hard. But knowing someone was looking for a cure and getting closer and closer to it, would've lifted some stress off my shoulders.

    2. I agree with you because i think that the poor people should have been the first nes to get help the rich people could buy lots of things and didn't need much help and i have no clue what i would do in a situation like that because of the fever i would be scared and feeling terrified of what could happen if i got the yellow fever.

    3. I would have been scared to death and very miserable if that situation happened to me. In my opinion if people had extra money, food, or even medicine, etc they should have given thoses things to the poor and helpless people. I would also be really sad knowing all those people had to stay and just wait to die.

    4. Thats what I thought to. I hated the part were it said familes even abandoned their sick family members at home to die alone. And then there was the part were it says they just saw dead people on streets and then scooped them up and dumped them in well, a dump.

    5. I would have been scared. Why would you let people just die? everyone is important not just the more wealthy.

  7. I want to talk about the part on page 9 where there were eight deaths in the space of a week in two houses on the same street and the city never took notice of it. I thought that they would at least consider the fact that something was going on here. I would have at least wrote an article or said like a speech that something was going on. What do you think about this?

    1. I think that people maybe would've took notice to this if they didn't want their city to be perfect. And a lot of people were to wrapped up in their life to pay attention to other people's lives. It's like that sometimes even if people don't like it.

    2. I agree with you i think people should have noticed the strange deaths because deaths do no happen that freaquently.

      Delete
    3. I think that they didn't say anything about these deaths that were so close to each other because the people probably didn't want to hear that it was contagious. If they knew that it was contagious, they might have been more stressed and might have made some bad decisions because of their emotions.

  9. I want to talk about the part on page 71 where they were doing autopsys on the body's . What do you think is more important? Figuring out how to save people by doing autotopsys on dead bodys or helping alive sick people? What do you think?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think that they should've done a few autopsies on a few dead bodies to find out exactly what's happening and find the cure. After they do that they should get right to helping alive sick people.

      Delete
    2. I feel like it was okay to do a few autopsies. So they could figure out what exactly happened to those people. But I believe after that they should mainly be focused on finding cures and helping sick people.

  10. I want to talk about the part where people got mad at Rush for finding the cure. The cure was something that could've worked. I think it's just odd that people got mad about this. No one else was trying to find a cure so, why would they be mad. If you were in this position would you have tried to find the cure? This occurs on pages 62 & 63.

    1. I was thinking the same thing. People have no right or reason to get mad or become upset because they aren't the ones trying to find a cure for the disease. Now if they had found a cure they could have argued what one was better; that was not the case at all.

      Delete
    2. I thought this as well. I was surprised that they were getting angry and not relieved that there was some form of cure. Rush was just trying to help the city, but the city probably didn't really acknowledge how much he was trying to save them.

    3. I was thinking the same thing. Why would you get mad at a person for trying to help save people? I think that he did goof finding the cure.

  11. I would like to talk about the part where Bush Hill started to actually improve some of the people's lives. I thought that it was amazing how Israel and Girard took over and finally established something in Bush Hill. Before it was just a house that was to be avoided but now people actually want to go there to get rid of whatever is plaguing them. I'm also glad that the dead are actually being buried now. What do you think?

    1. I agree with you Ava. I think that the bodies needed to be buried so the people weren't always thinking about death. I like Israel and Girard's method of curing the victims better. It helps people fight of the fever naturally. Instead of being poisoned.

    2. I agree with you that Bush Hill was actually starting to improve some people's lives. I thought it was helpful and kind of Israel and Girard to take over Bush hill. It was also nice of them too make it a place where people could go if they had the Yellow fever and needed help.
I also like the fact that the dead people are being buried and not just left on the street.

    3. I agree to, I thought it was horrible when the people were just left dead on the streets and they just scooped them up and threw them in a dump. I'm just glad that these people actually did something helpful instead of being like most people who are just leaving and letting the others die. Good thing Bush Hill never got demolished or anything because then that might have caused nowhere for people to treat people in one big place and not have to go to a bunch of different houses.

  12. I want to talk about the fact that we see this disease as such a bad thing, but really I think it might have helped us in the long run. If you think about it, if this outbreak never happened, the population would probably have been way bigger, due to more people being alive and having children. A bigger population might mean spatial issues, poverty, a faster rate of global warming, and difficult waste management. What do you think about the impact this disease had on the human race and the Earth?

    ReplyDelete

    1. I think I can relate to that. I mean without it Philadelphia Might have become over-populated and it said that there were already lots of ships and shops there and that is the reason it always smell bad because there are overloads of trash and people dumping stuff in the wharf. So maybe the disease was a sign that this place was getting to crowded?

      Delete
    2. I agree. I thought about it and it really makes sense. I think the same thing about the impact you really summed it all up.

    3. I had never thought of it this way but now that i realize it maybe the yellow plauge did end up helping and could be considered a good thing because of how it helped the city in many ways.

  13. I want to talk about the part where Freneau was laughing at people for leaving the city. I thought it was terrible of him because he is not sick and probably never had family members that were sick. The part that was most interesting to me was the different cures they had. I wonder if they had them the whole time or just thought of them and said, "well might as well try it."
