Getting Away With Murder - The Story of Emmitt Till

We've been discussing the book with our table groups.  Now it's time to talk with your friends from other classes that are also reading this book.  Take some time to think about a part of the book that would make for a good discussion.  It can be any part from the beginning to the part you read for today.

Tell about the part you read, give your thoughts about it, and invite others to share their thoughts too.

Here are some discussion stems:

I want to talk about the part where __________________.  I thought _____________________.  What did you think?

The part that I thought was most interesting so far was _____________________________.  I think _________________________________________.  What did you think?

  1. The part that I thought was interesting so far was when Emmett Till got dared to go ask the woman in the store on a date on page 50 to 54. I think that is was not a very good idea to dare Emmett to ask out a white woman in Mississippi. What do you think?

    1. I agree that friend was not very smart telling a black kid to ask that to a white women in that time period especially in Mississippi.

    2. I agree because these boys that challenged him to get a date with her knew what could happen and didn't stop him.

    3. Yes, I don't think they should have dared him either and I dont think thats how cousins should be. They should have thought more.

    4. I think that Emmett did not know better because he is from the north but the cousins should have. Emmett had never experienced the south and just because of a silly dare he died.

    5. I agree they shouldn't have said that because none of the bad stuff would of happened. But then again he didn't know what was going to happen when he asked the woman on a date.

    6. I totally agree, but actually, I think that it was kind of Emmett's cousins faults. They were the ones who started this whole killing scene. Emmett should've just disagreed with his cousins, even if it made his cousin's think he wasn't brave enough to do so. That would've saved his life.

  2. pg 64-65 I wanted to talk about the part where the mom of Emmett till refused to cry until she had Emmett's body back in Chicago. I thought she was very strong. If it were my kid I think I would cry right away. What do you think?

    1. I agree with you because most parents would be crying if they found out that their only kid was died but she stayed strong.

      Delete
    2. Yes, I don't know how she would stay that strong and not cry. I don't know who would not cry right away. I'm not sure why she didn't cry though, was there a reason?

      Delete
    3. Yes, I also agree, she was very strong not many people can do that.

  4. I want to talk about the part where the were talking about what happened to emmett's body and what it looked like. I thought it looked fake but it also looked real because he was in the river. What did you think? Page 67
The part that I thought was most interesting so far was when they had his funeral why so many people showed up. I think so many people showed up because they wanted t see what white people were capable of so they could be cautious. What did you think? page 77

    1. Yes, I think the same thing, but I knew the body was real and I don't see how they got away with it.

    2. I think the body was real because I saw that same picture before. I was surprised with how many people show up at the funeral too.

    3. I think they already knew what whites were capable of but wanted to see if it was true and how bad it was.

  5. I want to talk about the part where they got Emmett in the vehicle and asked " Was this the right boy?" on page 58. If it wasn't the right boy I think that they still would have killed him because he knew too much however I don't think they would have tortured him like they did to Emmett. What do you think they would have done if it wasn't the right boy?

    1. I don't think they would have killed him I think they would just keep him until they got answers out of him then they would take Emmett and do the things they did. But I understand where you are coming from

      Delete
    2. I respectfully disagree. First of all what answers would they have gotten out of the boy? Second of all if they held him hostage they most likely wouldn't just let him go after. I mean they could but they'd hold him until they kill Emmett and then torture Emmett and kill the other boy.

      Delete
    3. I don't really think so, because the answers that they can get out of him could be where, or who is the person who did it. Second, they could let him go because they have nothing to do with him like give him away and get Emmett maybe they could have hit him but I don't think they will kill him.

      Delete
    4. I think they would have just left and tried to find the right boy. They never said anything about what they were doing or where they were going so if it was not him he would be clueless.

      Delete
    5. I agree with you that they would of killed the boy if he wasn't the right one because he would have known about a lot of the stuff they were trying to do to another boy. But I also think that they would have gone looking for the other boy.

    6. Tiara, they knew who did it already so it would be pointless to get it out of a random innocent guy. Plus he didn't ask if it was the right boy until he was already in the car and they already threatened the family and him to "blow of his head". That being said if they did kidnap the wrong person he would know some things like that they were trying to kidnap someone. I doubt they would let this accidentally kidnapped kid go because he was already kidnapped and his family and him were threatened.

    7. Trent, they came in with the intention of killing and torturing Emmett. It wasn't just a random colored person. Their target was Emmett.

      Delete
    8. Brynn, if they knew who it is was then why did they kidnap the wrong person in the first place. Also just because the kid knows something they can still let him go and they can say if he tells they will kill his family. So he won't say anything so stating my point they won't kill him but they will do the original and kill Emmett.

      Delete
    9. Bryant didn't know but his wife did. That being said after they get the wrong boy in the car they asked the wife. If the wife then said no, it wasn't him. That would have been after the boy was kidnapped and threated. I understand what you mean by they might kill his family but how would Bryant and Milam know if the young boy went to the cops first and then they would be in jail unable to do anything.

      Delete
    10. I think the wife would still lie she lied about Emmett what makes you think she won't lie about this for her just to kill another african american. Also Bryant would probably call one of his family members or one of his friends to finish the job if he was in jail, and they would probably know if he said anything because of their connections through that entire place.

  7. I want to talk about the part where emmett was begging his cousins not to tell uncle mose what happened. I thought they should of told him so then they would be prepared for the kidnapping. What did you think?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. This is on page 56.

      Delete
    2. I agree because if Emmett told his uncle that way Emmett Uncle wasn't surprised when he went into town

  8. I want to talk about the part where on page 56-57 the african american woman told Roy Bryant about the incident. I thought that if she never told him about the incident then he would have never found out because Carolyn was never going to tell him. What do you think?

    1. I agree with you that if the woman didn't tell Roy Bryant. But then I also think that even if the african american women didn't tell Roy that he would of found out anyways because everybody knew about it in the town.

  9. I want to talk about the part where Wright's wife tried to get Emmett out of his bedroom and into the cotton fields before the two men came into the house. I think that even if she got him out of his bedroom and into the cotton fields they would of found him because they would have threatened Mose and Elizabeth to tell them where he went. I know if I was Emmett I would have tried to run away from the two guys that were trying to kill me. What do you think?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I agree with you when you said that they would threaten Mose Wright and his wife to find Emmett but If he did get out I do not think they would have found him. Also, I would have tried to run too but I feel like they would chase me.

  10. I want to talk about the part during the trial when they tried to deny that it was Emmett's body and that Milam and Bryant were even the killers on page 82. I do not get how they can deny that it was Emmett when he was wearing his fathers ring. What do you think about their plan to deny it?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I agree with you on this, it was proven that it was him by Mose Wright. It wasn't very smart of them to try and deny it of being Emmett.

      Delete
    2. I agree, but I thought that they actually admitted to doing the kidnapping crime TWICE. But isn't that enough proof that they had to do with the disappearance and death of Emmett? Shouldn't they be guilty?

  11. I really want to talk about the scene where Bryant and Milan take Emmett out to the barn for the beatings. I read that there were some other people with them and that two of them were blacks. I don't understand that because I thought Bryant and Milan were big on segregation. So why would they want them? I think that they were forced to help them. What do you think?

  12. I want to talk about the part where you get to see Emmett's body in the coffin on page 66-67. I thought that the body looked a little fake, it just looks like a doll in my opinion. What did you think?
The part that i thought was most interesting so far was they McDonald's back then. I think it was really cool and i'm really curious if they had Big Macs, and if Emmett has ever been to a McDonald's. What did you think?

    1. I agree, it is hard to believe that's what the body looked like. It looked fake, but who knows e weren't there, it might have looked more real in person.

      Delete
  13. I don't really know if that "body" of Emmett was really real. I don't think the newspaper would actually allow a dead person to be shown throughout town. I kind of agree that you think it might be fake. The face just looks a little too "blended in" because you can't even tell the facial expressions or features. It doesn't even really look like a face.

  14. I want to talk about the part where Strider said that he didn't have a choice about defending Roy and J.W. Everyone has a choice, Strider did but he chose wrong. What do you think.
