Titanic - Voices From The Disaster

We've been discussing the book with our table groups.  Now it's time to talk with your friends from other classes that are also reading this book.  Take some time to think about a part of the book that would make for a good discussion.  It can be any part from the beginning to the part you read for today.

Tell about the part you read, give your thoughts about it, and invite others to share their thoughts too.

Here are some discussion stems:

I want to talk about the part where __________________.  I thought _____________________.  What did you think?

The part that I thought was most interesting so far was _____________________________.  I think _________________________________________.  What did you think?

  1. I want to talk about the part where the titanic hit the iceberg on pg.73. I thought it was exiting and interesting, how everyone stayed calm and did not panic. if i was on the ship I would be so scared. What do you think?

    1. Yes I agree, but they couldn't feel the iceberg hitting the boat because it was so big. But if I were there I would still be freaking out just in case

    2. I agree but at the same time some of the people didn't know what was going on so they really didn't have a reason to freak out. But if I were on that ship and I knew what was happening I would have freaked out.

  2. I want to talk about the part on page 60 where J. Bruce Ismay wasn't worried when he got the message that said they were sailing straight tord icebergs. If I got a letter that said my ship was sailing straight tord icebergs I would have been very afraid. If I was the captain of the ship I probably would have turned the the ship a different direction so that they were not headed tord icebergs. What did you think?

    1. I agree with you. If they did turn a different way maybe all those lives would not be gone. But yet again the boat was really big so maybe they couldn't turn it on time.

    2. I read that section and I disagree I think the captain thought they would be fine because in the beginning the said that the titanic was practically unsinkable.

    3. I think that they should have moved the boat just to be sure that they didn't crash.

  3. I want to talk about the part where they're building the titanic and how long it took and how many people worked on it. 15,000 mean starting working on the build at 7:50am and finished at 5:30pm with a 30 minute lunch break, and a ten minute break to do anything. Yes the men might work from 7:50 to 5:30 but it still took them approximately 3 years to build the titanic to its entirety.

    1. I agree with you. How much time did they really work on the ship. They had 30 minutes lunch break and then a 10 minutes to do whatever they want. So how much time did they work on the boat.

    2. I guess I get what you're talking about Jamari, but there were some guys who got to fit on the life boat.

    3. I understand why they let the children go first. Maybe the reason why they let the women go first also is because men are stronger and could help others get on the lifeboats. While the women could help with the children on the boats.

    4. i Read that section and I was confused too why were they trying to stay back?

    5. what i'm trying to say is that the men stayed so the rest of its family chould go and survive and live their life

    6. I think that they were trying to help with getting people on the boat and make sure that they were safe.

  5. I want to talk about the part when they crashed into the iceberg on pg 71-73. When they saw the iceberg why didn't they turn. Personally I thought they weren't paying attention at the time. They wouldn't have crashed if they were paying enough attention to the water and what lies in it. If they were watching they would not have crashed. What do you think?

    1. I read that section again and I disagree i think that they did try to turn but they couldn't in time.

    2. I agree because they also got a warning that they were headed straight for icebergs and they pretty much just ignored it. They should have paying at least a little more attention to what they were supposed to be doing.

    3. I think that they weren't able to turn because of how big the boat was, but you make a good point, they should've had time to turn the boat.

  6. I want to talk about the part where they are putting the people on the boat. I thought that it was really brave of the people that had to wait and let other people go first. The people that had to stay seemed very calm. This starts at page 105- Women and Children First. What do you think?

    1. I agree that the other people were very brave to let others get on the lifeboats. I would have been very nervous just to know that I was letting other people in front of me to get on the lifeboats and risking my life on a sinking ship.

    2. I agree because the people that waited must have been very brave to the the ladies and kids go first while the ship is sinking.

    3. I agree because what happened if those people didn't make it on a lifeboat. They risked their life to save hundreds.

  7. I want to talk about the part where it was explaining how the workers work and how long they work on page 7. I don't understand, did they let the workers stay on board to work at 7:50am till 5:30pm? If they did/didn't then why/why not? What do you think?

    1. I want to talk about the part where they started building the ship because I have know idea how long it takes to build a ship so I don't know if three years is a lot or not when they also have 15,000 workers working on it too.

  9. I want to talk about the part where the Titanic ran into the iceberg. When I saw the picture of the iceberg I was shocked by how big it was. I thought it was a lot smaller than that. I was wondering why the captain didn't see the iceberg earlier and avoid it early. What is your opinion on it?

    1. I think at that point the if the captain tried really hard to turn around the ship they would have hit it anyway

  10. I have really liked the book so far. The one thing that I don't like is the fact that they rarely talk about the third class people. I am hoping that before I get to the end of the book we get to learn about the third class people and what they lived in. What do you think.
