  1. I was surprised that they beat Louie up for wanting the flag. He didnt really know what was going on. He simply just wanted the flag, and then people just started beating him.

    1. It was amazing how he just took the flag and started running, but then the guards chased him.Once they found out it was Louie (an olympic runner) they just let him keep it and it was also intresting how close he got to Hitler.

  2. One thing that surprised me was when he was racing and all of a sudden the other racers surrounded him and elbowed him in the chest and kicked him and he still won the race. My question is why didn't anyone stop them from hurting them?

    1. That surprised me to., but Louie still kept running even when he was hurt. They should have stopped the racers that hurt him.

    2. I don't think anyone else cared that Louie was getting beat up, and want the other racers to win.

  3. Something that surprised me was that a young age he started to drink, smoke, steal, and other bad things.

    1. Yes, this surprised me too and how his parents didn't find out or realize that.

      Delete
    2. This also surprised me. It was amazing even after how much he did smoke and drink, he was still a amazing runner. I thought that it would of caused more trouble for him.

      Delete
    3. This also surprised me. But back then people thought it was normal to smoke and drink because nobody really knew they were harmful to your body.

  4. I was surprised on how much Louie ate on the ship, and on how the other racers out of now where started to hurt him

    1. I know, I don't know how you could eat that much. It kind of reminds me of Pizza Ranch because you eat so much there.

      Delete
    2. Yeah, it doesn't seem possible that someone could eat that much, but he also hasn't eaten in a while so it kind of makes sense

  5. Something that shocked me in the book was how bad of a kid he was. I was amazed at the fact that he never really got in trouble or caught. This clearly showed how good of a runner he was even at a young age.

  6. I was surprised about how much Louie ate on the boat. Also I thought it was dumb that the other racers in the race were trying to hurt Louie. But on the other hand it was awesome that he still won the race in an incredible time.

    1. It said in the book that he ate so much because he was coming from a family where most of the meals were comprised of stale bread.

  7. I was surprised that Louie ran his fastest lap, even though the other racers beat him up. I wish the Olympic stadium didn't get destroyed in the war, so then Louie could race.

    1. If the stadium didn't get destroyed, he probably would've at least come in 3rd at the 1940 olympics

  8. I was surprised how Louie got beat up by the other racers during racing. One of the boys elbowed him and that was "powerful" enough to "crack" his rib but Louie still kept running.

  9. I was surprised when he stole the flag and then let him go with it

  10. One thing that surprised me was how much he got away with as a kid and how his parents didn't seem to do much about his behavior. If it were my parents, I would have been in so much trouble.

  11. I was surprised when he joined the army. He's this rebel who does whatever he wants, yet he joins the army where they tell you everything that you have to do.

    1. I know. His brother is either the biggest role model for Louie, or his brother is that convincing. He was the worst kid possible until his brother talked to him about track.

  12. I was surprised with how much trouble he got into, and got caught for almost nothing. Even though he was really young, he should have gotten consequences.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I was surprised about how much trouble he got into. If I was in his shoes I would of been in so much trouble. He got away with everything.

  14. I was interested by home many "Plane Crashes" happened. It doesn't seem like a coinsidense that that may planes crashed, did they not want to be there?

    ReplyDelete
  15. It was really confusing how the book talks a lot about interrogations as part of the prisoners daily routine, but yet it seemed that Louie only had to go twice. Can anyone help out on this?

    ReplyDelete
  16. I think it would be really scary to be in a country where you don't know anyone there. Also having to be separated to a different camp than Phil. I don't think I would be able to go through all the Louie did. I would probably have a bunch of mental breakdowns.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I wish Louie and the other Americans will team up and break out of the camp.
I can't imagine how it would be like living in the Japanese camps.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It scares me to think about living there. Considering what they did to them. Starved, and beat them!! I cant imagine how they felt.

      Delete
    2. Same here but, the Japanese would just kill them. They have guns and weapons, the captives would have nothing.

  18. One thing I want to discuss is the "Bird". I think the reason he acts the way he does is maybe he has a illness. That or he might have psychological problems.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, I don't think a person could have that much madness and anger as a regular person.

      Delete
  19. One thing that I would like to discuss is how crazy "The Bird" is. I cant believe how mean he is to Louie, and its weird how he only attacks Louie and not anyone else he must have something wrong with him.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. He was really mean and that was another thing that was surprising. He beat them almost to death and then had tea parties with them and forced them to be friends with him.

  20. One thing I would like to discuss is how Louie stole the Nazi flag and the nazi's didn't really even try to stop him, all they did was ask him why he did it. It really surprises me that he didn't get in any sort of trouble for it taking it right off the flag pole.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yah, they just let him go. He didn't even get a fine or get arrested.

      Delete
    2. Yeah I thought is was kind of weird, I think it was because he was one of the runners.

      Delete
    3. I later realized that when they asked him why he did it, he answered but with a Italian accent. They let him go because Italy was on there side.

  21. One thing that surprised me was when the japense cut of Garretts leg. Another thing that was surprising was that Garrett had maggots on his anckles.

  22. One thing I would like to discuss is the conditions the Americans had to live in in the camps. They were starved, beaten, and most were sick. Did Japan get in trouble for this? I have hear about people punishing Nazi's for their war crimes, yet never have I heard of Japanese people getting punished for it.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. This is what I wanted to talk about!! Thats really wrong.
I also never heard of them getting in trouble, so im thinking they didnt get in trouble.

      Delete
    2. I have never thought of that. I think it's because they were only beating them. The Nazi's killed all there workers pretty much.

      Delete
    3. I agree. The Japanese did some really terrible things. They can't just use the excuse , that it was war and they were prisoners, can they?

  23. One thing that has been on my mind the entire time while reading Unbroken is the transition Louie had made to go from being a bad child and then going straight into the army. Then he still stayed faithful to the Army and Military while he was being put into all of those harsh situations such as floating out at sea for over 46 days and then being put into the horrible camps. He stayed faithful even while they tried braking him to get information.

    ReplyDelete

    1. That surprised me as well and how when they questioned him he just told them a bunch of realistic lies.

      Delete
    2. I know. Louie was like the worst kid ever in his young years, then his brother set him straight.

      Delete
    3. I thought the same thing as you did. It was so surprising to me how he ended up being a good person from he grew up.

      Delete
    4. These were the things that were going through my head when we first started reading. He was such a bad kid, smoked drank and everything else. But look what he did. Army, and everything else. Its crazy to think all the bad he did, and then where he ended up.

      Delete
    5. Right?! I completely agree.

      Delete
    6. I also think that he was trying to change himself by being in the military.

      Delete
  24. One thing that I wanted to bring up was the conditions that the Americans had to be in, in the camps. They were starved, its crazy. Some of the pictures they had were very crazy on how skinny, and unhealthly they looked.
I wonder if anything ever happened with the people doing this. Like did they get in trouble?

    ReplyDelete

    1. I noticed that as well and I am pretty sure that they would have been punished because they were violating the Geneva Convention and all of the people that did it.

      Delete
    2. I noticed that as well. I also wonder what happened to the people who did that after the war.

  25. One thing that surprised me was how strong Louie stayed when the bird kept beating him endlessly nonstop.

    1. Well i mean also look at how tough he was when he was young and kids kept on beating the living daylights out of him. He still put up with that so i think that's where he gets his courage.

      Delete
    2. I know... I don't think anyone could handle that much beating for that long. I can't believe that when "The Bird" left the camp, then Louie ended up going to the camp that "The Bird" transferred to.
It is just so unfair... I hope "The Bird" gets whats coming to him in the end.

  26. One thing I would like to talk about, is about the Omori POW camp and The Bird. I saw the movie on Friday, and I thought The Bird was bad then. Then I read about him in the book, and It was way worse. I just wonder if he gets into some serious trouble after the war.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I don't think so because the only people that you here getting punished are the Germans and how they treated the Jews. But they should because they were violating the Geneva Convention.

      Delete
    2. I hope someone finds him and gets him in trouble because he was so mean to the POWS and he didn't need to be.

      Delete
  27. One thing that was on my mind through the hole book is how Louie was such a bad kid and then all of a sudden he wanted to be a better kid. The he was a Olympian runner and a good friend to the people he worked with on B-24. He also ends up being so caring and nice and hopeful when he was in the camps. I was not expecting him to end up like this from the first few chapters.

    1. That was on my mind in the begining of the book how he was such a really bad kid and then when he grew older he apoligized for everything he did,and also grew to be a mature adult

    2. I think that he finally figured out that if he is a terrible kids that he will get no where in life.

  28. I think it's insane what all these Japanesse soilders did to the Americans. I mean they beat them and make them starve (but feed them to still stay alive), I mean i know the Nazi's were worse but still it's just wrong.

    1. Yeah that's true, the least that they could do was put them out of their misery. But they just tourcher them.

  29. Another thing I wanna talk about is how bad of a kid he was. He was the smartest thief i think i've ever heard of. He got away with everything and his parents weren't to smart cause louie would just run.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. That suprised me as well, but when he was a POW why didn't he steal stuff if he was that good of a thief when he was a kid.

    2. I agree with Isaiah, because maybe he can sneak out at night and put a bag over his head so the Japanese guards can't tell who he is in case he runs by. Also because he is so light he can maybe out run them and when they aren't looking and go back into the barracks with the stolen items.

      Delete
    3. I agree with Isaiah because since he barely ate he was light and that made running easy for him so he could probably out run them if he tried to steal the food. It would be risky but that might be a risk that you would take to save yourself.

  30. I wanted to talk about how SCARY the bird is. He honestly scares me, I don't get how someone can rip off a ear! That's crazy, and on top of that he always comes after Louie. He is not a guy I would mess with.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. He scares me too because he beats everybody and hurts them really bad until they are unconscious.

      Delete
    2. I would not want to mess with him either I would be scared to even by him.

      Delete
  31. It surprised me that "The Bird" were so mean to the men. He ripped half an ear off of someone, clubbed them, slapped them, beat them til they are unconscious, make them eat food that is inedible. He invited people to tea parties and then beat them and there friends the next day.

    1. That's probably what he thought the Americans where doing to their people.

    2. He probably did that because he was getting revenge on them for destroying his homeland of Japan or getting revenge for a family member.

      Delete
    3. I think he might have had some sort of mental disease or something to be that crazy.

      Delete
  32. One thing that I wanted to talk about is how bad he was treated in the camps. It was surprising that people would actually do that to other people. In the pictures that were in the book showed how skinny they were and the book said how they barely ever fed them. Its crazy that people could be that mean.

    3. I thinks it really crazy that they just captured Americans and put them in these camps.

    4. I also feel the same way. I would never be able yo see people like that. It tests your humanity and emotional being, that is for sure.

      Delete
    5. When I saw some of the pictures, I was so surprised. The POWs were so skinny and all you could see was bone.

  33. That is unbelievable how they treated them. The japanese treated the american's so badly they didn't even seem to be human, anymore. They were so skinny and weak to even do anything, yet they still had to do the things the japanese said.

    ReplyDelete
  34. It is unbelievable how those Japanese guards at those P.O.W. camps can treat the the American soldiers so inhumanely. They torture and kill the Americans, and I feel bad if I accidentally step on an ant and kill it. Even though the Americans were trying to kill the Japanese soldiers and trying to serve their country doesn't mean they have to act so inhumane to them. I wonder how the Japanese guards can sleep at night with out being tortured by guilt.

    1. I agree with Aidan they thought it was ok because they were in war and most countries do the same thing.

      Delete
  35. I think it was really inhumanely that they just captured Americans and put them in these "Death Camps" to die.

  36. One thing I want to talk about is how insane the bird is. I honestly think he had mental problems. He'd hurt someone, invite them to tea party and then hurt them again. And when the planes flew overhead he would just lose it. He'd go around beating almost anyone he could get his hands on. And the fact that he would apologize and then go beat up someone else or the exact same person again almost immediately after apologizing is just weird. He has to have something wrong with him

      Delete
    3. I think that he had a mental or personal problem. And the fact that he beat up Louie everyday for no reason at all makes me sad because the bird did awful things for insane reasons.

      Delete
    4. I think what ever mental disease he had was way worse than being bipolar I think he might have had some sort brain disease and that might of messes with his thoughts and feelings.

      Delete
    5. I cant believe someone can be that brutal. How could he act like that? He probaly had a mental illness.

  37. I thought it was absolutely crazy that the airman that Louie ended up becoming really close friends with was put in the same exact cell that Louie was put in at Kwajalein. I also thought that it was terrible that the airman guy was injured really badly and had maggots laying and hatching inside his ankle and the only way for him to get medical attention way to give up secrets about his Military service as an Airman. I can't believe that they made him watch as his leg was cut off. I want to be a medical officer but I think watching it happen to me would be worse than dealing with someone else's.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I also think that its horrible that he had maggots coming out of his ankle. That would be so gross and give you so much disease if there were maggots coming and growing inside your ankle.

    2. I think thats terrible too. I don't know how they could do that to someone.

  38. One thing I want to talk about is how scary the bird is. He treats everyone like a animal. He has NO friends and I thinks thats whats causing his problems. I cant believe how Louie spent time with him. I would of died but he was really strong.
