I think that the thing that has "struck" me the most in this book would be, all of the racism that has happened. One part of the book they said that someone had quit being in the army because of all of the racism and how mean the whites were being to them. I found that quite disturbing that it was that bad.
I think it was clever of sergeant morris to have the other guards practice the drills of the white paratroopers to help his men's moral. It was really fortunate that the General Ridgely was watching them practice so he could let them in on the idea of a colored paratrooper unit. The way paratrooper where trained in the story sounded hard at first but cooler as they moved to the zip lines and towers.
Its unfortunate that the triple nickels never saw combat despite being more trained than the paratroopers used. However they did what they had to do with putting out the fires even tho most weren't even caused by the japanese bombs and were just normal fires. It could have been for the best because instead of losing possibly half of their squad they only lost one man.
I agree with that. I feel that even though they were trained well enough to go out into combat to defend their country, I feed that they needed to have at least some people in the back. If they didn't have people in the back fighting the forest fires, we would have a lot of fires with most likely nobody fighting them.
I agree. Yes they didn't get to be in combat for the train that they had to go throw it was better to lose one man from a fire than losing all the squad from war.
A part that I read about was how they paraded through the streets with the army and the 82nd Airborne. They were doing this because they were celebrating how World War ll had ended and that every one was happy that it was finally over. The author had said that African Americans came out from the side walks, sides of street; and hugged the Triple Nickles, and thanked them. The people were all so happy. She had said that when the Triple Nickels went down a street people started screaming and cheering everywhere.
So far in that book that I read was about the smoke jumps. I don't think its far that the blacks don't get to see combat. There are soldiers and they should have the right to fight in the war instead of putting out fires. I am very surprise by how kids in Japan had to leave school just to make bombs.
I agree with you. I feel that they had worked their butt off, and that just making them put out fires isn't as great as going to fight for your country. I can see where you are coming from with the school thing, I feel that it was wrong that they had to make kids do what they needed to win the war.
I think it was bad of them that they had to take the children out of school just so that they would be able to make a bomb. They should have just made the grownups do it. Plus if something could have gone wrong they could have been killed.
From what I have read in the book so far, I thought that the worst thing that has come up was when the African Americans got to go into battle and the Whites excepted them, and then later after the war, they went back to the same way that it was before, with them doing worst things.
I agree with that because why would they want to go back to the old way witch people were mean to each other. Like the whites and blacks were just getting along than things have to go back to the old raciest way.
I think that it was really good that lieutenant General John Lee, invited all blacks to join the war to help serve. I think that people are actually getting the fact that it doesn't matter what color skin you have. What matters is what type of person you are inside.
I agree with that. They needed people to help win the war.If they didn't do that, we would most likely still have segregated places. They had the same training and everything, so don't know why they wouldn't put them in sooner.
I think that so far the book is interesting and it makes me feel like im there with them for example in when they were going to make the bomb I thought its was going to blow up.
The topic that confuses me the most about this book is why did the blacks wan't to serve a country that they weren't free in? wouldn't they rather fight against us to fight for there freedom?
I think that the real reason why the blacks wanted to fight was to prove to the whites that they can do want they can do. Maybe if they though that if they fought they would get the same rights as the whites.

DeleteYes that's what I think to. They were probably more trained than the white paratroopers.

DeleteThe triple nickles did get into the army but never did actually see combat because they were assigned to put out fires instead.

ReplyDeleteI thought of that as well Blake it doesn't make sense.
Deletehey my reply to you question is below...
DeleteI think that the real reason why the blacks wanted to fight was to prove to the whites that they can do want they can do. Maybe if they though that if they fought they would get the same rights as the whites.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you almost 100% but I still think that they could have done better on the book.
DeleteI think that the Triple Nickels should have been in combat at least once. At least they are trained if they are needed in the future.
ReplyDeleteThey never saw combat but paved the way for colored paratroopers and served their country as much as they could
DeleteI agree with you Ira. I don't think that it is very fair that they didn't get to do that.
