It really surprised me that no white people would care for eachother, and they had african american nurses do it. That is just going to spread the disease to even more people. Also, if the coffee was making the town smell bad, than why didn't they get rid of it right away? Maybe that is the reason that so many people are getting sick. That should have been done right away.
A thing that grossed me out was Carey helped this guy put a body in a coffin that was like covered in maggots, and then the guy said he wouldn't tell her family so know she like brought it into her house and have a good chance of infecting her family. And when it said that if her family found out then she would be dismissed does that mean they would leave her or that she would be sent somewhere??
I think that the town is disgusting and that the numbers of people are dwindling. The disease is spreading like wildfire and if they want to cure this they better hurry because soon no one alive will be left to cure this.
I was reading and I realized that none of the doctors got sick. It seems like when there are so many sick people, the doctors would have gotten sick. At least one of them. Their town is gross too, so i'd imagine some doctor would have been sick. I don't think they had the right gear back then to keep safe. It confused me on how they didn't get sick.
I know that he got sick but I find it hard to believe that not many got sick. During this time it didn't seem like they would have the right equipment to protect themselves. I'd think that more doctors and nurses would have maybe gotten sick.
If the coffee is causing all of this fever stuff why don't they get rid of it? Also, if all of these people are moving to different places isn't that spreading the fever? If I was living in a town where all of these people are moving I would be scared I would catch the fever. They should have confined the people in the first place.
I think that they should get rid of the coffee. If it's causing such a problem they should get rid of it. I think if anyone with the sickness should stay in this state because other wise, like you said, it will spread and just cause a bigger problem.
The thing that surprised me was that they didn't quarantine the city. I think that they should have just put a point in the city that anyone past couldn't leave. That way some people could get out and the fever would stop at that point. Also that way people wouldn't spread the fever to other states when they leave.
I am glad that the people that are sick with the fever are put in a mansion than Rickets Circus. But, it is still a terrible organization plan because if there was a family member that has a fever, they are sent to the yellow fever house{the mansion}.
I was happy when they said that the fever was gone. But then when they said the fever was coming back I was really surprised. I was also a little confused when they said that the fever was coming back even though the streets were cleaned. That made me wonder if the streets were even the problem in the first place or if the fever was just very strong.
Even if the streets were cleaned, some of the germs may have still been there. Or one person could have still been sick and spread it to others. This sickness did go around fast.
I was surprised when in chapter nine it was talking about how mail was dipped in vinegar. Does vinegar have some chemical in it that kills off germs?
What also surprised me is how it was said that the sickness was gone, the streets were all cleaned, but then the fever came back and people were getting sick again. So was the streets the problem or was it something else?
I think vinegar might kill off germs and that is why they used it. Also I was also surprised when all of the sudden the fever came back when people said it was gone.
I sort of felt bad for the people in the city because in the newspapers it was saying that the fever was gone, but there were still unclean corners and people were still getting carted to Bush Hill. Knowing this, and if I had to be in that situation I would have still stayed home and played it safe. i wouldn't want to be the one to die after everybody says the fever is apparently gone.
I also felt bad for the people that thought the fever was gone when it wasn't. All because the newspapers needed something to write they were in a way costing people their lives.
I am confused about how they made it seem like the plague wasn't a big deal and that it was going away and then suddenly it was back again. I was also confused about how they said that they were cleaning the streets and getting rid of plague starters but the plague hasn't gone away. It makes me wonder if it really ever started from dirty streets or if it was something more.
I wouldn't think that it is acutally for sure gone, because it will probably come back eventually. Especially if they don't know what caused it, or how to really prevent it, I think it didn't really go away.
They should have seen what changed in what they did to make the plague go away. Obviously something made it go away, but they never figured out what it was.
I was surprised that throught the whole plague, no one got rid of the coffee grounds. The coffee was causing a foul smell, and maybe that is why people were getting sick. It is just surprising that no one would get rid of the coffee, and maybe get the idea that people were getting sick because of the smell.
Ya, I was wondering that to. Wouldn't they want to do everything they could do to get rid of the smells and fever in general? If I was there and in charge that would be one of the first things I would do.
I was surprised by that too. If the streets smelling bad can get you sick then bad smelling coffee grounds should definitely be able to get you sick. I couldn't believe that they didn't realize that.
One thing that I am kid of thinking is that maybe in the hot summers the bold coffee stench allures the mosquito's. The doctors said that the people had red bumps that looked like mosquito bites. Also this could be a possibility because the mosquito's carry diseases.
Yeah, that seems like a good reason. But towards the end of the 1700's they didn't know how to make mosquito spray like we have now. So if they do figure out it's the mosquito's how will they stop it?
I agree with you because all of the coffee stench is probably part of the reason the mosquitoes came and there were probably puddles in alleys and that is attracting mosquitoes.
I thought about why they gave the patients mercury to make the patients vomit out the sickness and they also thought bloodletting would help but i don't think a little less blood would help.
I agree with you because they made patients take mercury and they vomited but, it didn't really work. It was just more torture for the yellow fever patients.
Loosing blood would only make them even more sick. I'm not sure how they would replace the blood without being sure it didn't have the yellow fever in it.
I am concerned by the Mosquitoes biting many people. It is very likely that the mosquitoes are spreading yellow fever because they carry many diseases. The dirty streets are also probably spreading yellow fever. I am glad that people started cleaning up the streets and the alleys.
I was surprised that it took about 5 doctors and multiple decades to finally prove that it was mosquitoes. I was also surprise and saddened when the book said ¨By the time you finish reading this sentence another person has dies of Malaria.¨ It also took about 150 years since 1793 to make a vaccination.

ReplyDeleteYou're right because if they don't find a cure soon it really could wipe at least everyone in Philadelphia out.

ReplyDeleteDoctor Rush was treating the patients a lot more and Doctor Rush did actually get sick from treating them.

DeleteI agree. I would want to move as far away as possible. And they should have gotten rid of the coffee right when they realized it was causing a smell.
DeleteThey had no idea that the coffee stench is creating the fever. They were doing labs and tests to figure it out.
DeleteThe thing that surprised me was that they didn't quarantine the city. I think that they should have just put a point in the city that anyone past couldn't leave. That way some people could get out and the fever would stop at that point. Also that way people wouldn't spread the fever to other states when they leave.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you too on that. I think that they should do that so it will help the people who are not infected.

DeleteI also felt bad for the people that thought the fever was gone when it wasn't. All because the newspapers needed something to write they were in a way costing people their lives.
DeleteI would never think that the fever is completely done unless there is a for sure cure.

ReplyDeleteI actually think that the plague is caused by mosquitos.
DeleteI wouldn't think that it is acutally for sure gone, because it will probably come back eventually. Especially if they don't know what caused it, or how to really prevent it, I think it didn't really go away.
DeleteI would think the plague would come back sometime and hit cities. I think it was caused by the dirty streets and the mosquitoes.

DeleteOne thing that I am kid of thinking is that maybe in the hot summers the bold coffee stench allures the mosquito's. The doctors said that the people had red bumps that looked like mosquito bites. Also this could be a possibility because the mosquito's carry diseases.
ReplyDeleteyea, because the mosquito could bite someone who had the disease and carries the disease then bites a another person and transfers it....
DeleteYeah, that seems like a good reason. But towards the end of the 1700's they didn't know how to make mosquito spray like we have now. So if they do figure out it's the mosquito's how will they stop it?
Deletegood point i think only thing u would be able to do is slap if they come on you.
DeleteI agree with you because all of the coffee stench is probably part of the reason the mosquitoes came and there were probably puddles in alleys and that is attracting mosquitoes.
DeleteThey could use some of the medical money to try and create the spray McKena
DeleteI thought about why they gave the patients mercury to make the patients vomit out the sickness and they also thought bloodletting would help but i don't think a little less blood would help.
ReplyDeleteI dont think that either because you need iron in your system and blood has iron in it to help your body function.
DeleteI agree with you too, because they took all this blood from the people but in the end you need blood like Abby said.
DeleteI agree with you because they made patients take mercury and they vomited but, it didn't really work. It was just more torture for the yellow fever patients.

DeleteYa, I agree with Laura. The Yellow Fever and mosquitos give the people a good reason to keep the streets clean.

ReplyDeleteEspecially since they knew how bad mosquitoes were, you'd think they would think about mosquitoes sooner.
DeleteI was also surprised that it took many decades to confirm that mosquitoes were the reason for the yellow fever.
