I chose this book because I love learning about the KKK and would absolutely like to know more about it. I would like to know more about the present day KKK, some things that they've done, and any thing else. I find anything about the Ku Klux Klan interesting.
I chose this book because I am super interested in the KKK and what they did. I would like to learn some background knowledge about them and what they did.
The reason why I chose this book is because ever since we started talking about it in English I have a interest in learning more about them learning more of what they do then just burn crosses and I want to know why did they have the idea of started the hate group.
I chose this book because the K.K.K. seemed interesting to me after we learned about it. I want to know more about why they started this group and more of what they do.
I chose this book because I don't really know a lot of the KKK and I want to learn more about them. I find the KKK very interesting, even though they did very harmful and nasty things to a different race. I want more knowledge about the KKK
I have chosen this book because I have had a learned a summary of the KKK, and I wanted to learn a little more. The KKK is very bad but I have enjoyed learning about them.
I chose this book because I have a feeling that I don't know everything I can about the kkk. Each time I hear something about them it interests me and I want to learn more. I would want to learn about the unknown, and everything that makes them interesting to the reader.

I chose this book because I want to know more about the KKK. We learned a little about them in other classes but I would like to know more. I would like to learn the real beginning of the KKK and how they became such a large group.
I picked this book because I love to learn about the kkk. When we were class I thought it was kind of cool to learn about the kkk.I want to learn about how the clan started. What they were thinking.
I am kind of confused with the whole rumors having to do with slaves (Page3-5). I don't really understand what the rumors are and why they were made. All I know is that these so called rumors are about slaves in the south.
I am confused on that, too. But that's why only wealthy people could afford them. Also they would have slave auctions, so you could possibly get a cheap slave there.
I am kind of confused about how the Union got all the plantations to let their slaves free. The southerners still didn't agree with the president, so how did they go to every plantation and help the slaves? Wouldn't they hide the slaves or something?
I have two things that I am confused about. I don't really understand what the yankees are. The book presents them to be cruel "soldiers", but is this only because a southerner is explaining them? Who exactly are they? I also don't understand how some people can afford to buy slaves. I mean, some people are rich and all, but how can the afford 100 slaves that cost 1,000 dollars each...because 1,000 dollars is actually 13,000 dollars today.
Yankees were soldiers during the Civil War, they are native to the north , this book is about the KKK which didn't like blacks so they consider Yankee's cruel because they fought with the blacks
I am kind of confused on when there is no more slavery because the Americans (whites) go all wild and make a big deal on not making peace with the African Americans. If you don't make peace that will make matters worse wouldn't it? Also the American farmers say "Now its back to work" Did they not want to work? One more thing is that the Americans think the so called slaves are going to take their jobs. How would that be possible? There was no peace, it'd be hard for African Americans to get jobs. There are many interesting things I don't understand. But so far the book is pretty good!
I am confused with what happened to congress. It said they weren't running or working. But if they weren't working, how did the U.S. survive? Wouldn't the country shut down?
I'm not confused at all but I never thought of the slave owner's They bought the slaves and then they are free. The plantation owner's most have been in poverty after all the slaves were emancipated.
I am confused why all of the southerners are going into debt and they are losing their farm because of the release of the slaves when today there is no slaves why can't they work for themselves?
Back when they had the slaves, the southerners had a pretty easy life. Making people work for them and then selling their goods. And later, the slaves were pronounced free from slavery, and all the money that the southerners put in buying the slaves was a waste because there is no one working anymore. They could not earn money by working because there was no slaves, so they couldn't pay their debts. They did not have enough money to keep the working land. So they lost land and money because the slaves were "taken away" from them. And they couldn't work for themselves because then who would sell? They had so much land they would need almost fifty slaves. They could not work for themselves because they didn't know how, they had to sell their land.
They always had people to do it for them so now they are so used to not working that they are in dept because they cant pick all the crop by themselves they don't have the money to hire people and that is what slaves were for.
On page 25, the book gave the story of how the KKK got it's name. Do you think that their name is effective to make people frightened of them? Or do you think people were/are scared because they know about the horrible things they did/do? Why?
I understand your confusion, Peyton, and I also agree with it. The name doesn't make people frightened, but it does make them interested. They want Blacks to know the name, but they want to invite the white folks to join them. I think their aspect of creating the name was to be mysterious, also like their choices of their wardrobe. But then again, this name is also a theoretical choice for the kkk.
I think people were drawn in by the name and they thought that it was the right thing to do. Remember, that this spread through out the country and many people were convinced that this was the right to do by many people in the community.
Like Savannah and Leah said they were probably drawn in by them and thought it was the right thing to do at the time because the news about the KKK spread so quickly.
I believe the Yankees are a large group of people who trespassed into people's houses and any of their property to steal their belongings. I don't think what they did is right, so I think they should've been punished. I think this part of the book is very confusing but I also believe it is very important.
Yankees is another word to describe the union. No, I don't think it's right, but you have to keep in the the confederates did the same thing they ransacked houses and stole a lot of stuff also just like the Yankees.
On page 45, the book brings up the fact that the Klan believes in the " All American way". The all American way is equality, freedom, life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. If that is what the Klan is said to believe in, then why do they want the exact opposite? They claim to be "all- American", but then they aren't actually being "all-American". How is this supposed to make sense, because racism isn't part of being all american.
Leah I think they are thinking about how it was in that time. It was not unusual for a white person to have slaves or servants so they thought that it was okay and good to have slaves.
I believe they had a different way of thinking. I've learned that they believed the "All American Way" was only allow anybody who were born and raised in the United Sates, and that their parents and grandparents were born and raised in the U.S. to be in their country. So they thought African American people shouldn't have been allowed in the United States.
Like I said earlier to Peyton, I think it was all about mystery. People would spread this name, yet nobody knew who these people were. Southerners were definitely glad to be part of the klan, both because of mystery, and the objective of hating blacks. I hope I helped, Jackson!
The word was easily spread because the events that they hosted such as cross burning, killing people, and all of the other horrible events they did. I believe people just joined by going to meetings and paying their joining fee. Also, people who were in it all felt different about it. Some of the members agreed with the KKK's actions. Other's joined because they thought it was all fun and games, but soon realized it wasn't. Those people would've tried to get out of the klan but that was basically impossible.
I think people were happy to join the klan because they were tricked into thinking the klan was totally different then what it really is like in the book witness harvey got tricked into thinking the klan was totally diferent
I think that the KKK became popular so it spreaded really easily, just like the kendama's how when they were really popular it spread's really fast. Yes I think they were happy to join the Klan at first like Harvey in Witness he thought it was a fun family club with picnics, parties, and dances, but after a while he found out the real meaning of the Klan.
The KKK was really popular because of propganda, and the KKK had a rule called the decade rule. The decade rule was every person had to recruit 10 people to join the klan. Let's if your best friend was in the klan wouldn't you want to be in the Klan with them, this is how the klan grew so fast, Isaiah H. has a good point with the kendamas and how they grew so quickly.
I think people were against blacks and also kind of frightened so they might have done things to get there name to be heard. I don't think they were happy to join the KKK but were frightened that if they didn't they would be hunted buy the KKK.
When slaves were free the owners did not own them so when the slave owners bought them they paid money. But now they are free do you think that the owners got their money back or do they just go poor
They went poor. The slave owners were used to having a servant basically. Then they realized had to for themselves. After that they're plantations weren't s great which meant their crops wouldn't sell so they lost a lot of money.
I think some slave owners might have made a profit and other slave owners might not of because people have owned slaves longer than other slave owners.
It hurt the landowners so bad because then they had to do their own work and it would take longer, because most landowner had quite a bit of slaves, so when they left nobody was on the plantation to do work
It hurt the plantation owners because they spent all of their money buying the slaves, and after the war all the money they had wasn't worth anything. Plus, they don't know how to work so they couldn't earn any money either.
On page 10, its talks about how the whites feared that blacks would over rule them once they got free. If you were alive in this time would you be frightened that they would have more power than the whites? How would life be different for whites?
If I were alive then I would be kind of frightened because they would probably be mad that they were slaves and want revenge. I think that life would be different because they might be poor now losing all the money they put into slaves.
So it says if black people were unemployed they were arrested and fined (in the South). Why? I don't get why they just can't go and find a job they can work for people if they want but I still don't understand why.? Also if they were unable to pay fine they would be auctioned off to an employer "their master" It wasn't fair and wasn't their fault, but I still get confused why they punished them.
Round Two. Comment about something that shocked or surprised you in the second half of the book. Write it in a way that will allow others to discuss this idea/event with you. Reply to at least 3 other comments (if possible). All must be done by Jan 23rd. There will be no lates with this blog.
One thing that shocked me was the author told you about Elias Hill, who at seven years old, came down with a illness, maybe polio, that left him unable to walk or crawl for the rest of his life. But my question is, couldn't his parents or guardians have tried to do something for him? Did they even see a doctor about his illness?
I agree with Ryan and Peyton, they probably didn't have a lot of money back then and it would probably take a long time to get a doctor and to be treated by the doctor.
Like what Jackson said they did not have the resources but also if they did, I don't think the would have helped them because it might of made them look bad for helping a black who had a disease.
Like everyone said they didn't have good resources back then so there wasn't much they could do about. They also maybe had money but maybe not enough to pay a doctor to treat him
What really caught my attention was the story of the Tutson family. That is so horrific and very upsetting to hear. They had to live such a depressing and horrible life. And what really made me angry is that when the mother told the police it was considered a "false report." Tell me your thoughts about the situation.
I thought the exact same thing and I just think it is a very horrifying situation to even think about and it is just sad that they don't even care about hurting the baby even though the baby did not do anything to them. Also in the book it said that Hannah was whipped 126b times by 5 men with a very thick rod.
I thought the same thing. What a horrible life time they had to live then. The baby part is mainly what shocked everyone reading this. How could they just do that?! I wouldn't want to be in such a painful time like that. That poor family. I felt so bad for the children to.
The thing that shocked me was when the Tutson family got invaded by the Klan. It was very horrific because the Klan barged in the door at the Tutsons house and grabbed the mother Hannah's throat chocking her while at the same exact time they grabbed her baby's leg and threw it across the room and injuring it's leg. Hannah was whipped 126 times by 5 men with a very thick rod. I think this is a terrifying situation to be in especially when her baby was thrown across the room. What do you guys think about this situation?
I think it had to be so long and painful. The part that was really attention grabbing is when Hannah finds her kids hiding in a field. It is good yet sad that they had to hide so they wouldn't get killed. I feel so bad for that family.
It was a really bad/painful situation they had to go through. It shocked me what the klan did to them. The part that really shocked me was when her baby was thrown. And like Peyton said it was good yet sad that they had ton go somewhere and hide so non of them would get killed.
The thing that shocked me the most in the second half of the book is with the tutson family. Hannah was holding the 10 month old baby and the sheriff's deputy threw the baby after choking her. And then he started to whip her and then raped her when others left. Then she tried to find her kids for 12 miles. Then the next day they found her kids in the field.
That had to be terrible to see your baby getting thrown after chocking her and worst of all the Sheriff then raped her that alone had to be a really bad experience.
She had to live such a depressing life. When she found her kids she was probably so happy and grateful. If that were to happen now there would've been consequences. It makes me so mad that they didn't believe Hannah. This story is very sad and upsetting.
I agree. That was terrible and I can't imagine ever feeling truly safe again. But thankfully she found her children and they were alright. It would have been even more horrifying if they were hurt badly or killed. She is a unbelievably strong woman that shouldn't have been put through that.
When I was reading this, I was sad that the whites were that cruel to do that to a little baby. Also I thought it was cool how the older kids brought the rest of the family to a field away from the klan. Hannah had to walk 12 miles in pain, she is pretty dedicated to her kids.
What surprised me was how badly the Southerners and some of the Northerners did not want the blacks to be educated, for example A freedman gave a white female teacher a place to stay while she was teaching and the KKK came and shot him in his bed. What do you think the Southerners and some of the Northeners did not want the Freedman to have an education
In the second part of the book the thing that really shocked me was the part about the Tutson family. It was such a horrible event that happened to that poor family. Just like everyone else said I hated the part when the baby was thrown by the sheriff's deputy.I would never want to live through something like that.
I agree, it was an horrible story, but if I were them I would move out of the county to keep the children safe. I think it was pretty cool how the mom was in harsh conditions and she walked 12 miles to find her kids.
I am stunned at what happened to the Tutson family. I don't understand how someone could get whipped 126 and still not be believed by the police. Their only chance of being safe is to file a report, but then the police don't even keep them safe. The trouble they go through is horrific, and if I were them it would scare me to death. I would just move for the sake of my kids. Wouldn't Hannah be fearful for the lives of her children? I also want to know what happened between the century that the book didn't talk about. I really want to know what happened during the part they skipped? And if I know correctly, that's when a lot of killing happened. I just want to know why the book left out the years from 1871-1950, and am urging to know what happened. Please share your thoughts.
Yes, I agree. She had the scars to prove it too. That just shows how bad the racism was here in this time. I would also like to know what happened in the time that they skipped. I kind of left you hanging and really thinking about the way we treat people.
I think they did it because they thought that the people were disrespecting them. If someone was talking bad about the kkk or helping blacks and it got around to them, this is what they would do.
The thing that stunned me was how whites were scared about the blacks voting so they gave them colored slips and made laws saying that they needed to know how to read or write. They also spread out the ballots so the blacks couldn't reach so they could vote. I was also shocked about the Tutson's story and how the mom got whipped many times and she was bleeding, but she walked 12 miles to find her children in a field.

So they thought African American people shouldn't have been allowed in the United States.
DeleteI think that being "All-American" was different at the time because it was a while ago and a lot of things changed since then.
DeleteThey probably thought of "All-American" differently than we do because I was also questioning that.

ReplyDeleteOne thing that shocked me was the author told you about Elias Hill, who at seven years old, came down with a illness, maybe polio, that left him unable to walk or crawl for the rest of his life. But my question is, couldn't his parents or guardians have tried to do something for him? Did they even see a doctor about his illness?
ReplyDeleteAt that time it would have took a long time to get to the doctor plus there was not as good of technology to do anything.
DeleteI agree with Ryan. They also probably didn't have the money to treat it because in this time many people weren't very wealthy and considered poor.
DeleteI agree with Ryan and Peyton, they probably didn't have a lot of money back then and it would probably take a long time to get a doctor and to be treated by the doctor.
DeleteThey did not have the resources we have today but they should have gotten him a wheelchair but they probably did not have the money.
DeleteLike what Jackson said they did not have the resources but also if they did, I don't think the would have helped them because it might of made them look bad for helping a black who had a disease.
DeleteLike everyone said they didn't have good resources back then so there wasn't much they could do about. They also maybe had money but maybe not enough to pay a doctor to treat him
DeleteBack then people didn't and couldn't afford doctors or maybe there weren't any doctors that would treat them.
DeleteWhat really caught my attention was the story of the Tutson family. That is so horrific and very upsetting to hear. They had to live such a depressing and horrible life. And what really made me angry is that when the mother told the police it was considered a "false report." Tell me your thoughts about the situation.
ReplyDeleteI thought the exact same thing and I just think it is a very horrifying situation to even think about and it is just sad that they don't even care about hurting the baby even though the baby did not do anything to them. Also in the book it said that Hannah was whipped 126b times by 5 men with a very thick rod.
DeleteThat shocked me to but the most part is with the baby how the sheriff threw the baby. I was surprised how the kids kept the baby safe.
DeleteI thought the same thing. What a horrible life time they had to live then. The baby part is mainly what shocked everyone reading this. How could they just do that?! I wouldn't want to be in such a painful time like that. That poor family. I felt so bad for the children to.
DeleteThe thing that shocked me was when the Tutson family got invaded by the Klan.
ReplyDeleteI think it had to be so long and painful. The part that was really attention grabbing is when Hannah finds her kids hiding in a field. It is good yet sad that they had to hide so they wouldn't get killed. I feel so bad for that family.
DeleteI think they had to make it really bad so to teach them a lesson by making it horrible.
DeleteIt was a really bad/painful situation they had to go through. It shocked me what the klan did to them. The part that really shocked me was when her baby was thrown. And like Peyton said it was good yet sad that they had ton go somewhere and hide so non of them would get killed.
DeleteThe thing that shocked me the most in the second half of the book is with the tutson family. Hannah was holding the 10 month old baby and the sheriff's deputy threw the baby after choking her. And then he started to whip her and then raped her when others left. Then she tried to find her kids for 12 miles. Then the next day they found her kids in the field.
ReplyDeleteThat had to be terrible to see your baby getting thrown after chocking her and worst of all the Sheriff then raped her that alone had to be a really bad experience.
DeleteShe had to live such a depressing life. When she found her kids she was probably so happy and grateful. If that were to happen now there would've been consequences. It makes me so mad that they didn't believe Hannah. This story is very sad and upsetting.
DeleteI agree. That was terrible and I can't imagine ever feeling truly safe again. But thankfully she found her children and they were alright. It would have been even more horrifying if they were hurt badly or killed. She is a unbelievably strong woman that shouldn't have been put through that.
DeleteWhen I was reading this, I was sad that the whites were that cruel to do that to a little baby. Also I thought it was cool how the older kids brought the rest of the family to a field away from the klan. Hannah had to walk 12 miles in pain, she is pretty dedicated to her kids.
DeleteWhat surprised me was how badly the Southerners and some of the Northerners did not want the blacks to be educated, for example A freedman gave a white female teacher a place to stay while she was teaching and the KKK came and shot him in his bed. What do you think the Southerners and some of the Northeners did not want the Freedman to have an education
ReplyDeleteI think that there should have been real punishments for school burnings.
DeleteI think that they did not want them to be smart and try to get revenge, because they would have been smarter and could have figured out ways.
DeleteIn the second part of the book the thing that really shocked me was the part about the Tutson family. It was such a horrible event that happened to that poor family. Just like everyone else said I hated the part when the baby was thrown by the sheriff's deputy.I would never want to live through something like that.
ReplyDeleteI would hate that Two but I don't understand i honestly can't think how it feels to have that happen.
DeleteThat would be a terrible but no one knows how that feels these days
DeleteI agree, it was an horrible story, but if I were them I would move out of the county to keep the children safe. I think it was pretty cool how the mom was in harsh conditions and she walked 12 miles to find her kids.
DeleteI am stunned at what happened to the Tutson family.
ReplyDeleteYes, I agree. She had the scars to prove it too. That just shows how bad the racism was here in this time. I would also like to know what happened in the time that they skipped. I kind of left you hanging and really thinking about the way we treat people.
DeleteI think they did it because they thought that the people were disrespecting them. If someone was talking bad about the kkk or helping blacks and it got around to them, this is what they would do.
ReplyDeleteI think that they whipped them because the whites maybe were not racist and were fine with the blacks and the other whites didn't agree with that.
ReplyDeleteWhat shocked me was that the blacks had just started to fight back when they did, why didn't they try to fight back earlier.
ReplyDeleteThe thing that stunned me was how whites were scared about the blacks voting so they gave them colored slips and made laws saying that they needed to know how to read or write. They also spread out the ballots so the blacks couldn't reach so they could vote. I was also shocked about the Tutson's story and how the mom got whipped many times and she was bleeding, but she walked 12 miles to find her children in a field.
