I chose this book because the great depression has always sounds only a little interesting. But learning and reading about actual children who experienced this phase in time sounds very interesting.
I chose this book because I wanted to learn more about the Great Depression. I really wanted to learn about the children in the Great Depression because since I kind of know how the parents were during it, I want to know about the children of the Great Depression.
I chose this book because the great deppression was a major part that took place in the world. I have always been fasinated by it and thought that it would be neat to find out about how the kids felt about it instead of the adults.
I chose this book because, I wanted to learn more about the great depression because it was a big part in the world. I would like to learn more about the kids then the adults because in other stories they talk about the adults and not the kids.
I chose this book because the children of the great depression sounds very interesting and I want to learn about how the children felt during the great depression. It is a very interesting topic it has a lot of imformation
I was very confused on the part we're it said that it was Hoover's fault for this all happening.. Because I don't know what he did to cause this, But I do think it's clever to call the shack places Hoovervilles. I wonder how he felt about this...
They didn't have lots of clothing material, because clothes we're made of cotton, cotton was grown on farms and they couldn't get anything to grow, but plenty of useless metal was around to make tricycles.
It probably was because you could maybe make tricycles out of car parts that you don't need. It's like a second hand type of thing. Like Julia said they didn't have a lot of materials to make clothing, so they had to up the price so people would spend more money to buy clothes for woman.
I didn't understand why the men's cost for shoes were way higher then the women's. They should be a closer amount because they probably used the same things to make them.
I chose this book because it was a HUGE part in history. This topic has always caught my attention. It is probably one of my favorite things I learned about last year. This book is abut the kids and not just the adults like other books.
I did not understand why the kids were sorry for their parents because the parents could not help with the great depression and their families were crying the kids and the families could not do anything no one could make the great depression go away.
I am kind of in the middle about this. I think it was ok because if they need the money this would be a way to earn some. On the other hand though I think it is bad to make someone suffer having to sit in a tree for a long period of time.
Well, no one really made them sit up there, they just did it to make a few bucks. But I personally think it's wrong and right. It's wrong that people are encouraging them with money to do such a thing but it's right because they're appreciating the fact that they're strong enough to do this and be so willing.
Well it is kind of right because they wanted to make money and kind of wrong because they could be making money everyday rather than sit and wait to win a prize.
On page 20 the people used some of Roosevelt's names to give a word for a place during the great depression. Was it okay to use his name in naming things? Why or why not?
Honestly I think it was not the right thing to do but I also think it was the right thing to do. I think it was wrong that the people cheated their way into saying that where Roosevelt and disobayed their president. At the same time I think about how the president did not help with the great slump the U.S.A had too though.
Throught the book it says that kids are dropping out of school under the age of 16 becasue they do not have enough money to buy shoes or because they do not have a coat. Do you think it is ok for the kids to drop out? Should the government do something to help the kids stay in school?
I think it it wasn't okay because obviously the kids wanna do school but they didn't have enough money, so the government should have helped them stay in school.
I think the kids liked school and wanted to go, but they wanted to help their family get money to survive, so the government should help them stay in school because they need education and the government should help them have some food to eat everyday.
It may have been good or bad in a way. Its bad that they don't have enough money for things they needed for school, but in a way the kids may not have wanted to go to school. The government should have still provided an education for kids anyways.
On page 11 there is shopping prices and earning prices, why do you think during the depression they got payed so much money when they were going through this hard time?
Everyone is poor and needs help that includes the shop owners. The shop owners were not going to get many costumers because no one had enough money to buy items, so they raised the prices in hope that the people that could shop there would still buy things. Also the factories would be low on money too so they would raise the price on the items making the shop owners raise the prices so they could make a decent profit.
I think maybe some people had been paid more than others. That might be why so many people were getting paid more, and some only got a low amount of money.
I believe that they got payed so much maybe because there trying to start the system of money again and get out of the depression. Or like Alyssa said, they were trying to get money, but if they raise their prices would anyone be able to be at high prices?
I think kids should have been promised an education until the age of 18 like now. Kids need an education to go on in life. The government probably could have done something to help kids be in school, and not drop out before age 16.
I am a little stuck with how they find out what kids and adults say in this book. I feel like maybe they have found old diary entries and put them in the book. But they should cite their sources like they do with the pictures. Even then I don't think they would know what was said exactly. What do you think?
Round Two. Comment about something that shocked or surprised you in the second half of the book. Write it in a way that will allow others to discuss this idea/event with you. Reply to at least 3 other comments (if possible). All must be done by Jan 23rd. There will be no lates with this blog.
They might have liked jumping on the boxcars, just living on them might have been fun. Not the thought of it, but just being able to do it. And what McKenna said they probably liked seeing new places.
It surprised me about how the drivers of the train didn't do anything about the boxcar children just randomly hoping in their train. But, I guess that some of the drivers let them stay there for a while because they needed a place to stay and they were being nice. What do you think about this?
I think it was a good thing boxcar drives did not care that the children were getting rides in their train. The drivers probably just wanted the kids to live their lives and not die because of the Great Depression
I agree with Mckenna it's a good thing because where else are they going to go? I doubt that they would just throw them on the streets of another state...
It was a good thing that the boxcar drivers let them stay, but it might not have been because they are nice. I think they just did it to do it. The people were suffering and needed a place to stay.
I agree they did not have a lot and they were trying their hardest to earn money for their family. Even though everyone was struggling during the Great Depression, the children seem to struggle the most.
I was surprised when I read about the dust bowl. How people had to leave their homes to get away from the storm. Some people had to go to California and other places just to get away. I don't really understand how this happened. Other than bad weather. But the storm lasted a while.

ReplyDeleteHoover was the one in charge at the time, people thought that he knew it was coming and that he did not warn anyone.
DeleteThank you Alyssa for clearing my confusion.
DeleteI did not understand why a tricycle costed less than womans clothing.
ReplyDeleteProbably because tricycles are eaiser to make than womens clothing.
DeleteThey didn't have lots of clothing material, because clothes we're made of cotton, cotton was grown on farms and they couldn't get anything to grow, but plenty of useless metal was around to make tricycles.

DeleteI am confused on people were ill-clad.
ReplyDeleteI was actually confused on that too, but I assumed it meant sick back then because in those days they talking a different vocabulary than now.
DeleteI like how on Page 3 this makes it seem like someone who lived through the Great Depression is talking, but how do they know what is actually said?
ReplyDeleteMaybe, because they asked these kids these questions a long time ago and they are just now using them in this book.
DeleteI didn't understand why the men's cost for shoes were way higher then the women's. They should be a closer amount because they probably used the same things to make them.
ReplyDeleteBecause back then, men we're more "important", and the men did work alot so they need something on their feet well getting the job done.
DeleteProbably because women's shoes are smaller, then men's shoes.
DeleteMen have bigger feet and there probably were more men then women and women had small feet

ReplyDeleteFDR made it go away....
DeleteMaybe the kids were scared and worried. And the parents were probably crying because they couldn't do anything to help their kids so they felt bad.
Deletethink that the kids were sad there parents
DeleteThank you Lizzy and Julia I know he did I meant none of the people could do anything about it....
ReplyDeleteYour Welcome, you cleared my confusion on Lizzy's confusion.

ReplyDeleteIt shocked me when it said that the boxcar kids were having the time of their lives being a boxcar kid. How could a child enjoy that?
ReplyDeleteThey probably enjoyed seeing new places in the world.
DeleteLike what McKenna said, maybe they loved being able to travel the world and meet new people
DeleteThey might have liked jumping on the boxcars, just living on them might have been fun. Not the thought of it, but just being able to do it. And what McKenna said they probably liked seeing new places.
DeleteIt surprised me how creative children were during the Great Depression. What do you think of their creations?
ReplyDeleteI believe it's because they had nothing else to do and creativity usually helps in hard times.
DeleteI believe that it was a great thing to do, so you could take time to forget about what is happening.
DeleteI think that they had nothing to do like Julia said. It might have been something to keep them entertained while these hards times were going on.
DeleteIt surprised me about how the drivers of the train didn't do anything about the boxcar children just randomly hoping in their train.
