  1. I choose this book because 1, World War II is my favorite war. And 2, The Atomic Bomb is awesome. I hope that i'll learn more about the making of the Atomic Bomb, and maybe a little more about WWII.

  3. I just like to learn about World War two and what happened. It's just cool to learn about major events that happened.

  5. I chose this book because I want to learn about the atomic bomb because it caused so much destruction for its size.

    ReplyDelete
  6. I chose this book because I did some research on the atomic bomb before, and I thought it was a good to learn a little more about the atomic bomb and this book would help me do that. I would like to learn more about how Americans helped make the atomic bomb possible.

  7. Josie i think the book your thinking of is Unbroken when the one guy becomes a Prisoner of War. This is the making of the Atomic Bomb

    ReplyDelete
  8. I chose this book because the destruction the bomb caused and how powerful science can be. I would like to learn why the Americans thought it was necessary to use a weapon that could eliminate the entire human race.

  9. I chose this book because i've heard about the destruction of the atomic bomb and i'd like to learn how someone could make such a destructive device

  13. I chose this book because I wanted to learn more about WW2 and about the atomic bomb. I hope to learn why both countries wanted to make such a destructive weapon and be able to use it against each other again if necessary.

  14. I chose this book because my favorite war is WWII and that the atomic bomb is the most powerful weapon in the world, I mean really, who wouldn't want to read about that. I want to learn how many problems there were in creating the atomic bomb.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I chose this book because it is about the atomic bomb which uses nuclear fission. I mainly chose this book just because of the science behind the bomb.

  16. I choose this book because i want to learn more about how the atomic bomb works and why it was made. I also want to learn more about WWII

  17. I picked this book because i was interested in the atomic bomb. How it got started, and who were all the people who made it. I also wanted to learn the affect it had on people, and about WW2

  18. I'm wondering on page 21 why Germany is taking all the uranium, whether they are making a bomb or waiting to make the bomb.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Germany know that Uranium can be used to make atomic bombs & they don't want us to get hold of it & build a atomic bomb.

      Delete
    2. I agree with Nelson, since a German spy heard what they were doing. They took all the Uranium so that they would have the advantage.

      Delete
    3. I think they stole it because if America got their hands on
it they could build more atomic bombs.

      Delete
  19. What is fission? I'm confused on what it is. They have said it a lot so it must be important to making the atomic bomb.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It is when something is divided into two or more pieces.

      Delete
    2. The fission the book is talking about is Nuclear Fission. Nuclear Fission is a nuclear reaction where a nucleus of an atom splits on impact & release a large amount of power/energy.

  20. I did not understand why the kids at camp beat up Robert hie did not do anything to them.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. They beat him up because he was different and to them different was bad.

      Delete
    2. They beat him up because to them, Robert was better than those boys, which he kind of was, and to them Robert was a threat, he was someone who would have a better life than them. That is kind of the same thing with me.

      Delete
    3. They beat him up because they thought he was a nerd and he had no friends and that he wasnt like anyone

      Delete
    4. They beat him up because he was differnt, the thought that he was kind of spoild. Anyway he was a threat to them even though he really wasn't

      Delete
    5. they also hurt him because they thought he was a nerd and they hated him they thought he was a no it all dommie

  21. I am confused on how the President of the United States does not know about fission even though it is in the newspaper.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. President Roosevelt was probably really busy on the war. Also at the time physics was really just theories so Roosevelt could've thought that fission was just a hoax or he just didn't know much of physics

      Delete
    2. The president probably had way more important things
to do like worrying about the war that was going on.

      Delete
  22. I am wondering when did the scientists start seeing atoms through teloscopes.

    1. It is like a symbol of someone after doing something that people will remember you by. Like in Home Alone, the bandits called themselves the wet bandits and they always left the water running in the house they robbed.

      Delete
    2. i've seen shows where people warn other people they were there by drawing a symbal on them with black ink, its kind of like that

  24. I do not understand why Harry Gold didn't run/ go back to Soviet Union after spying on U.S. after WWII was over.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I do not understand how someone does not hear about the great depression until 6 months after it started

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think that Oppenheimer is really into Physics and trying to understand it so much that he just doesn't pay much attention to anything else.

      Delete
    2. well the great depression didnt seem to really effect him and he didnt seem to care much about what was around him

      Delete
    3. I still think it would have affected him because the price of stuff would have gone up.

      Delete
    4. I think Oppenheimer is a little crazy, but yet again, he might have been so wrapped up in physics, that he wasn't paying attention. His did say though he was a little nuts.

      Delete
    5. Oppenheimer probably didn't notice that the Great Depression didn't exist for 6 months because he was probably working on an experiment or something else dealing with physics.

      Delete
    6. He probably never noticed how the prices were rising because he was living in the upper class after college. He also was really trying to test himself with physics, chemistry, biology, and almost any other science category there is.

      Delete
  26. what does frish mean by "i feel i caught an elephants tail"

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It is an expression. When you catch an elephant's tail, the elephant goes crazy, and she meant that this idea in this field is odd, not correct to earlier research, and also crazy.

      Delete
  27. I am confused on what the whole fission thing. What does it mean and why do they say it a lot. It has to be important because they mention it a lot if it wasn't they would have just mentioned it once or twice.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Nuclear Fission is a nuclear reaction where a nucleus of an atom splits on impact & release a large amount of power/energy. So like when the book is talking about fission it means like when the Uranium or Plutonium splits into 2. The fission process is important because it is the essential of the Atomic Bomb. The energy that is created when the Uranium or Plutonium splits into 2 is large enough to create a mass destruction when known to contain and direct it correctly.

      Delete
  28. Fission is the reaction when two atoms combine together @Luke Z.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. actually that's not entirely true fission is what happens when a radioactive elements sub-atomic particles crash into the uranium atoms which dosent join them but instead cracks the atom in two which releases enough energy to make a grain of sand jump which dosent sound like much but remember how tiny atoms are and how many there are.

  29. I am wondering why the German scientist didn't go to Adolf Hitler to tell him about this discovery? I mean if you want terrorism, make the atomic bomb to scare the countries. I'm not saying I'm in favor of that idea, but I'm just thinking, why not make that and win the war on terrorism.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The German "scientist" was from Soviet Union. At the time, the Soviet Unions were not exactly allies with Germany. They were fighting against each other. Also Adolf Hitler already knew about the atomic bomb. He had won the race to build the Atomic Bomb & actually built an Atomic Bomb before us, but could not drop it on us due to other complications.

      Delete
    2. Well, after the peace treaty was signed. Why didn't he tell them about the formula, and since he was a soviet, why would he go to America? Wasn't America and Russia in a large conflict during this time? Also, they both were in a cold war with each other like 2 years after WWII? I mean seriously, why don't you go to the country you are spying on. I'm not saying I'm happy he went to America, but come on!

  30. I dont understand why hitler wanted to bomb there ali, probibly to sent a message saying they do not want to be there ali anymore

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. He started not to trust them, and he wanted to show how powerful he is.

      Delete
    2. He also wanted to scare all the other countries to tell them not to mess with Germany. It was almost a threat from Hitler to all other countries in the world to either join or be destroyed in the process.

      Delete
    3. It was probably a sacrifice Hitler was willing to make.

  31. I don't understand why his parents would keep him inside for just being sick. But if they didn't, he wouldn't have been so smart because he would be playing with the other boys instead of reading and writing poetry.

  32. I did not understand why Tom Black wanted Harry to join the communist party.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Tom wanted Harry to join because he could be a spy, because nobody would think he's a spy because he never left his hometown.

      Delete
    2. they thought no one would expect him because he was a nice guy who everyone was sure of, and people thought he never left his home town

  36. If someone from a country discovers a new way of science, why would he go to a different country to tell them the news? I mean if you are going to tell someone about this great find, why not tell your own country? In the book's situation, doctor Otto Hahn went to America to tell about his find. Why?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Well what if Germany had spy's and other people trying to figure out what this find is. If they had the chance they would definetly take it. So he went to a different country.

      Delete
    2. What was that chance they would take? If you think about it, the book said he was working in Germany for his entire life, if he was a spy, he would have to be one for the Germans, wouldn't he?

      Delete
    3. He went to the country to tell more scientist about the descoery to see if they were supprised and knew what he was talking about

      Delete
    4. Maybe he didn't like Hitler, or maybe the American ways were more pleasing to him and he did not want Hitler to be in power.

      Delete
  37. Otto Hahn is German and he help build the Atomic Bomb, Do you think he should of treated his country like that?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Maybe he thought Germany was doing wrong things and maybe he didn't want Hitler taking complete control of the world.

      Delete
    2. Not all of the Germans were bad, Szilard and Wigner came from Europe to the U.S. when Hitler was taking over. Hahn just wanted to help the U.S. take down Hitler.

      Delete
    3. Maybe he wanted to see Hitler without the atomic bomb so that Germany couldn't destroy everything else.

      Delete
    4. Maybe Hitler did something that made him really mad so he came to the U.S.A. to work against hitler.

      Delete
    5. Well, probably thought the germans were really bad people so he didn't wanna stick around and wait and see what would happen.

      Delete
    6. Just because someone was another race doesn't mean they can't choose what they believe. Otto Hahn was German but it doesn't mean he had to agree with Germany's ways. He could've thought America was better and had better ways so he agreed to help them.

  39. What do you think would happen if oppenheimer never helped with the atomic bomb

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think the work on the atomic bomb would've slowed down dramatically and I also think that Germany would've won the race

      Delete
    2. I think it would have been really slow work and it might not have been done correctly.

      Delete
    3. The atomic bomb would never have been built because without him, no one would have known so much about physics.

      Delete
    4. I think something would be missing and the atomic bomb wouldn't work as well.

      Delete
    5. I think if they did not have him help build the atomic bomb the
work time would have taken a lot longer. And things would be
      different about he bomb.

  40. I am wondering why gold worked for the soviets in the first place when they were just going to treat him badly when he decided not to work for them anymore.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think he just needed money and had no where to go and get money.

      Delete
    2. Gold also wanted information on the soviets because he was a spy .

      Delete
  41. Going back to chapter one why was Harry Gold so important and why is everyone against him??

    ReplyDelete

    1. Harry Gold was a spy for Soviet Union. He was gathering information about what the U.S. was trying to do/build.

  42. When America dropped the bombs, what do you think would have happened if they hadn't gone off and exploded. Would Japan have fought back knowing we tried to blow them up?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think Japan would have fought back if the bombs did not go off
but the bombs did go off and a lot of people were killed.

      Delete
    2. I think Japan would be more alert, but would not attack because America would be ready when they came to attack because it would take so long for them to get over there.

      Delete
    3. Well Japan wouldn't just sit there and let America get another chance to bomb them. Just think if that happened to our country, instead of just sitting there waiting for another attack, we would fight back.

      Delete
    4. If America just lost some of there bombs take advantage of that. Also it will take a little bit to get more bombs so they have an opportunity unless America planned that (to have bombs fail) so they could counter attack.

      Delete
    5. I think that if the bombs didn't go off, the Japanese would have fought back and would get people out of the city or to bomb shelters. That way if when they are gone and America attacks, the people won't get hurt, and the Japanese will get the chance to counter attack

      Delete
    6. of course they would, because it would of been on accsident for us not to blow them up

      Delete
  43. I wonder what would've happened if Nuclear Fission wasn't discovered when it was. Would the war have gone on longer? Would Japan would've surrendered when they did? It seems like Nuclear Fission was very important yet deadly.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think it would've continued because you wouldn't surrender if they're was not a deadly weapon or military.

      Delete
    2. They war would have lasted for a long time and they would have only had smaller boms to work with.

      Delete
    3. I think if fission was never found, the war would have lasted until the early to mid fifties. They wouldn't be able to stop the war, so it would go on and on, until eventually someone gave up

      Delete
    4. well i think if they never discoverd it they would of found somthing else to do

      Delete
  44. What do you think would happen if Germany didn't stop the uranium sale and just took a chunk of what was found each day?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Things would be different in the war because Amarica ould have goting it and the war could have been over.

      Delete
    2. The problem wasn't very much the need for uranium it was mostly to stop uranium from possibly being put on illegal markets and sold to other countries against germany.

      Delete
    3. Then the uranium would have been sold or kept by people
      that should not have uranium.

  45. For being worlds strongest bomb they didn't really hold onto the secret to well but if the secret didn't get out what would have happened?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Then the U.S. probably would take their time on making the bomb instead of making it as fast as they could because they knew that Germany and Japan were also making the bomb.

      Delete
    2. The first to find out the secret would have an advantage and most likely won the war.

      Delete
    3. If the secrets didn't get out Germany would have probably won being the only ones able to create the bombs unless spies were able to steal the information.

      Delete
  46. How could they control the neutrons from flying off the atom? It said that the neutrons fly off and hit another atom, and when that happens it causes energy, but how could they make it fly off?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. When the bombs were dropped, the atoms started splitting in mid-air. The timing had to be precise or else they would have went off in the air. The force of impact hitting the ground caused the atoms to release all the energy stored inside.

  47. What would've happened if the Vemork Heavy Water Plant was never destroyed or the equipment was never destroyed.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think that if the Vemork Heavy Water Plant was never destroyed, another country besides ours would have been able to or close to making an Atomic Bomb because Heavy Water are used to cool down Nuclear Reactors and destroying the Vemork Heavy Water Plant probably slowed down Norways Atomic Bomb research

  51. If Japan would have never attacked pearl harbor do you think the United States would still have bombed them?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think they would, because Pearl Harbor was bombed 3 or 4 years before they nuked nagasaki and hiroshima, so they would have eventually joined the war and would've dropped the bombs, because the bombs were dropped to end the war, not out of revenge

      Delete
    2. no because they declared war after Pearl Harbor was bombed because they were upset
