  1. Part of Book: When Louie, Phil, and Mac were floating at sea. They were losing air in there raft, food, and water.

My Thoughts: I thought that they weren't going to live through that. I thought that the sharks might get them in that little raft. Especially, when they were getting shot at and Louie went underwater where the sharks were.

Question for you: Did you think that they were going to survive through that?

    1. I thought they were going to just because if they didn't it would be terrible. I agree with you totally. When they were getting shot at it was terrible. Louie could have been ripe in half by sharks and the two on the boat could have been shot.

    2. I agree 100%! There were 3 people living on 2 rafts with no food except some chocolate. I thought that definitely Louie was the only one that would survive (and I only thought that because the whole book was based on him, and this part was just in the middle). They literally punched sharks, and only one of them died.

    3. I dident think that they were going to survive through it because they dident have alot of food except for what they could catch and they dident have any water except for sea water.

    4. I am surprised that they were able to go that long without going insane, because if I were in that situation I would probably crack around day 13 (That is if i'm not already dead.)

    5. I thought that either Phil or Mac were going to jump into the water where Louie was a they were going to try to save him. And if they were going to do so I think that yes, Louie would survive but either Mac or Phil wouldn't survive.

    6. I agree, I didn't think that they would make it that long. I did think that Louie would survive. It was either Mac or Phil that wouldn't Survive. I was also surprised by the fact that they made it so long with very little to survive on.

    7. I didn't think that any of them were going to live through that because if it were anyone else, they wouldn't have survived. I also think it was so nice that Mac sacrificed himself to save Louie even after Louie thought he was horrible. It was good he redeemed himself before he died.

    8. Honestly to me I didn't think they would make it that long. When Mac ate the chocolate that slimmed the chance of their survival even more. I knew Louie would live, but I wasn't sure about Mac or Phil. They used their supplies very well.

    9. Question: Did you think that they would live through that event?
My answer: Personally, I thought that Louie was going to live. Actually, I knew (there was a picture of him in the end as an old man, so he would have to live through that moment to have that picture being taken of him). An besides, if Louie is the star of the book, is so important, and that the book isn't even close to being done, it's pretty obvious that he lives through that moment. I did, believe that one or both of his friends would die, and Louie would have that awful moment of grief. Turns out, it happened to Mac. He had a very heroic death, and deserves as much recognition as possible. It sort of reminds me of the movie "A New Hope" from Star Wars when Biggs Darklighter, Luke's friend, dies in combat.

    10. I kinda knew that they were going to live... or at least Louie. I knew he would because the whole book is about him, and there was still a while left in the book so I had a nagging feeling that he would live. I didn't know what was ahead of him, but I knew it was going to be bad. I was right. He was found and sent to the POW camps. That's horrible, i don't think i'd survive if I would have to suffer through those. I think that if the book wasn't just about him, I would think he would probably die. I feel bad about Mac, but it's good to know Louie and Phil stayed strong, to live a longer life ahead of them.

  2. Part of Book: I would like to talk about the part of the book where he is lost. They are on their own with very little resources. They have to fight sharks eat birds and try to stay alive while the enemy is firing at you. It shows a totally different side of everyone.
My thoughts: It's so sad. Only three of them lived through the crash and only two of them were able to make it to land alive. That's so terrible. I myself know that there is probably no way I could make it that long. They were out there for more than 40 days. It's hard just doing somethings but living out in the sea with very very little things and sharks that want to eat you is just barely unthinkable.
Question for You: What do you think about them being able to do that and how would you feel if it was you?

    1. I think that it is amazing that they could survive for as long as they did. I dont think that I could have done that.

      Delete
    2. I think that they were very brave when they were doing that. They catch birds and punch sharks! That's like unbelieveable. If that were me, I wouldn't be able to survive that long.

      Delete
    3. I agree, it was sad enough when superman and their old crew died, but now that most of their new crew died, it's double the sadness

      Delete
    4. I couldn't believe that they made it that long and I don't I could've made it that long either. It was kind of good that only 3 people made it out because they barely had the room or resources.

      Delete
    5. I think they were so amazing to live through that, and it was basically a miracle. If that were me I don't think I would live past day 5 because i am not that resourceful, and I probably would have cracked long before we found land.

      Delete
    6. I agree with you, first they lost most of their crew and then they lost Mac too. I think that it was amazing for them to survive that long with very little supplies. If I was in Louie's position I would not to be able to survive as long as them.

      Delete
    7. I would feel very incomplete. To be starving and lost, with very little chance of survival, I would be looking for the next best option. I think that they would feel awful. I mean, you would think of that happen to someone else, and no matter how much detail someone could put into it, it doesn't sound as bad unless, of course, you experience the moment yourself.

      Delete
    8. I agree, they went through so many hardships. It is sad to think about only 2 made it out to land. Even though they were brought to a torture camp as soon as they stepped foot on land. It is amazing that Louie and Phil made it out alive.

  3. Part of Book: Every interesting part of the book I come to I think more, "What hasn't Louie Zamperini done?". The only thing that really comes to mind is that he has never had a love interest.
    -
My thoughts: It seems like "love" is such a popular subject, and a lot of books are about it, but if Louie is doing all these things, shouldn't he have had at least one "sweetheart"? I give everything he does a big fat WOW, but he's done so many things from being a trouble making machine, to becoming a POW, I just think that if he had a girlfriend, he will have done anything and everything.
    -
Question for you: What was everybody else thinking, or was I the only one...?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Now that you bring it up, I think that would be a good idea. I've never really thought about him having a "sweetheart" since he's been in the military and a POW for awhile.

      Delete
    2. I wasn't thinking that until now. Well he is a famous olympian, I am surprised it doesn't say that he liked someone.

      Delete
    3. I thought that at first because if he just looked, he could have anyone he wanted because he was a famous olympian, and he was really a nice person. I wasn't suprised at all when he met his true love (future wife), and she instantly fell in love with him. Even though he was a complete stranger when she married him, she had fallen in love with his life rather than him, because she thought he was such an exiting person.

  4. Part Of Book:The beggning of the book when louie was a kid.
My Thoughts:When louie was a kid he got in alot of trouble, he started smoking when he was 4, on his way to pre school he would pick up cigarette butts and start smoking them. Then when he was 8 he started drinking. He got in alot of trouble with the cops, he would steal food from bakerys and then he would stash them all over town so he wouldent ge caught with them.
Question for you: Why do you think that louie was bad whenn he was a kid? Also what was your favorit part of the book?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think that he was bad because he was french and people picked on him a lot, so he was trying to act tough so no one would mess with him. Also, my favorite part of the book is when Louie stole the flag.

      Delete
    2. I think Louie was bad as a kid because he wanted attention. He wanted attention because he saw Pete and he saw how much attention Pete got and probably thought that the only way he could get attention was doing mischievous things.

      Delete
    3. I agree with Allie. I thought that he was a rebel when he was kid because he wanted attention. Even though it was in a negative way. When Pete got all the attention for being a "poster child," I feel Louie wanted to get attention from his parents as well so he became a rebel.

      Delete
    4. My thoughts on Louie's behavior as a child are that he had good reasons to act the way he did. I can understand that if someone wanted to sterilize you and possibly put you in an assilem that may try to poison you with milk, you might act up and cause mischief to make yourself feel better. I think that maybe he could have done something different, however, I cannot imaging how embarrassed and threatened he felt. His life could have been ruined, and he might never have gone on to do great things.

      Delete
    5. I think that Louie acted the way he did was out of two things. Jealousy and attention. He wanted the attention, heck, he NEEDED the attention, just like Pete said. He probably thought, "hey, if I'm going to be bad, I might as well get something out of it!" (Or maybe not... but hey, you get my point). I said jealousy because Pete was, like the book said, the opposite of Louie. Pete succeeded in grades, friendships, and more. Pete got all of the good attention, and what ever attention was left over, the bad attention, was given to Louie. I'm sure Louie embraced that bad attention! Louie, at times, would probably feel very guilty or even bad about what he did, and would wish that he could be like Pete, but I guess it wasn't meant to be.

  6. I think he was bad because when he was first being raised no one taught him the good and right. To be honest I don't think that his parents were a good influence. They later tried to stop him but it was to late. He didn't have any friends either so it didn't help him along with not having any hobbies.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think that part of it was his parents fault, but some of it was also society's fault. He was called awful names everyday just for being italian, which is something he couldn't change. Maybe he felt trapped because of his culture, and the only way he could escape was through being a troublemaker.

  7. Part of Book: When Louie Stole the German Flag.
My thoughts: I mean, what was he thinking when he stole that flag? Then, the guard chased him down. And, Hitler let him keep the flag, that he stole I might add, he didn't even get into trouble.
My Question: What do you think Louie was thinking when he stole the flag?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Nobody knows what Louie was thinking when he stole the flag.He only wanted the flag as a souvenir. When the guards were chasing him, he was probably thinking of running.

      Delete
    2. My guess is that he thought it would be funny! Knowing him and stealing as a kid, he would think it is a trip to the good old days! Where he was naughty and stole stuff. It is probably something that runs in his blood and will never leave him!

      Delete
    3. I just kind of laughed, because he playfully stole it as a "souvenir", but after he got back from the POW camp, he would refuse to look at one, let alone touch one. He'd probably spit on one if he saw one.

      Delete
  8. Part of book: In the beginning when Louie was growing up.
My Thoughts: I don't really realize why he was such a bad kid. Maybe it was just because he was treated badly from kids at school just because he was different. We might never know for sure. But I just want to know why he started smoking and drinking at such a young age. Didn't he realize those things were bad? He might have regretted it later on, but we'll never know.
Question For You: Why do you think he did such bad things when he was young?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think that he was at that rebellious stage. He might also have been following others and performing worse acts.

      Delete
    2. I think for one he didn't have any hobbies or goals to accomplish, so he decided to start troublemaking as a hobby. Second of all, I think that the fact he was getting bullied for something that he couldn't change, made him act a lot worse than he usually would.

  9. Part of the Book: When Louie was in Kwajaleine.
My Thoughts: Though the americans on Kwajaleine are prisoners, they shouldn't be treated that badly considering that they are going to be executed anyways.
My Question: If they want to get intel off them, why don't they torture the ones they know have valid information and the rest sent to a different camp.

  10. Part of book:I would like to talk about how louie was a great runner when he was in high school and then he was entered into the qualifiers for the olympics. Then once he finally made it into the olympics he was sent to war.
My thoughts:My thoughts on this is how horrible would it be to be put in war after you made it into the olympics! Even if louie had no choice, I think he was very sad that he couldn't show off what he had in him,

My Question:My question is how do you think louie felt after he was sent to the war?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think that Louie felt good after he was sent to war. I think this because most people at that time wanted to fight for America. So everyone wanted to fight for America. And if you were allowed to you had bravery.

      Delete
    2. Louie probably missed his family. He also might have felt proud going to war and fighting for America. His family probably felt the same about him.

      Delete
    3. I think that Louie probably felt sad but knew he had to fight for his country. The olympics got cancelled that year anyway so he probably needed something to do to get that off his mind. Joining the war was probably a good thing for him to do. At least both he got lost he was still getting to run each morning.

      Delete
    4. I think that Louie might have been okay with it at first, but then he started to not like it so much. He probably started to miss his family. I would probably be mad if I just started getting the new high scores in running and I got into the Olympics. Then, I would just have to give up my dream and go to war.

  11. Part of Book: When Louie, Mac, and Phil were floating in the middle of the sea. They didn't have a lot of resources.
My Thoughts: I thought that they weren't going to survive. When the enemy was shooting I was surprised that Louie went under the water where the sharks were, even though the sharks were in the water.
My Question: If the shooter didn't shoot them or even showed up would the sharks have made a move?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think that if the same plane came but didn't shoot then Louie would jump into the water with the sharks.Louie would still fight the sharks, but he wouldn't fight them a lot.If the plane didn't come then the sharks wouldn't have made their move unless if they were in danger.

      Delete
    2. If the shooters didn't come in don't think the sharks would attack because the shooting probably made them made so that's why they attack and also Louie was in the water.

  12. Part of the book: When Louie, Mac, and Phil are at sea. And when Mac is really struggling the most. And he is on the verge of dying.
My thoughts: I think that right after the crash Mac just wasn't with it. He was traumatized with the crash. And as the days progressed he got even worse and he was hungry and thirsty. I mean I think all of them were but he was struggling the most out of all of them.
My Question: I wonder if Louie and Phil had the chance to help him, would he live longer and stay sane?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think that they tried their best to help him when they could but they also have to care for themselves. They were all still taking aback from what happened with the crash.

      Delete
    2. That is a good question, I haven't really thought of it. Louie and Phil tried to save Mac the best to their ability. Knowing those 2, if they had more supplies, I think they could have had a better chance of saving Mac.

  13. Do you remember when Louie pranked that pilot with a laxative. Then when they ran out out of toilet bags the pilot went number two out the window of the plane while they were flying XD.

My thoughts: I thought it was funny because of the way the ground crew described it as a abstract painting.

My question: How would someone do that without getting in very big trouble. Even in the army I would think someone would have a really bad punishment.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Part of Book: When the boat reaches Louie and Phil, then they were thrown aboard. Afterwards when the Japanese took them in and fed them/treated them well.
My Thoughts: I didn't expect the Japanese to treat them so well. It was quite shocking, especially when they were carried to the infirmary and nursed back to health (in a way). I was also confused on why they would give their resources to the enemy, just to throw them into a prison cell.
My Question: Do you think it was a good thing that the Japanese fed them/treated them well at first? Do you think the Japanese nursed them for bad intentions?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think it was the right thing to do. When they were saved by the ship I was also not expecting
them to treat them so well. I think that when they treated them so well that it would make Louie and Phil trust the Japanese more and give them answers.

  15. Part of Book: Remember how Louie and the other POWs saw the biggest fight with planes in the sky yet.The guards seemed so scared. The civilians can't seem to find a safe place, so they went by Omori.
My Thoughts: I think that was awesome that the Allies are fighting back and sort of found the POW camp.It also seems so scary that so many people are dieing. This war is almost hopeless because of all the people that died or got injured.
My Question: Where the POWs scared that a bomb could drop on them?

    ReplyDelete
  16. Part of book: When the POW's saw the B-29 Superfortress fly over above their camp for the first time. The POW's seemed very thankful, even though the American pilot of the B-29 didn't even see them!
My thoughts: I was very surprised when the B-29 came over the POW camp. I thought that the POWs would take cover and the B-29 would land in the camp. Or, maybe the plane saw the prisoners in the camp and will report to the president and rescue them!
My Questions: I wonder if Louie and the others will escape or get rescued? Also, what would happen if the Japanese moved the POWs execution date up?! That would be terrible...

    ReplyDelete
  17. Part of the book: When Louie and some others got punched 220 times. This was one of the intense events that happened in the book. The other POWs had to hit them. If they hit Louie and a couple other POWs they were beaten.
My thoughts: I though this was terrible. This event was a lose lose situation. No one deserves that. The Bird was a very evil mad for making them do this and all the other things he made them do.
My Questions: Why exactly did they make the POWs do this? I wonder if the Bird ever felt guilty for this. How exactly did the POWs forced to Punch Louie and the other POWs getting punched feel?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I totally agree with you. I wouldn't be able to handle this type of pain. How is it fair that they get beat to death, and they can't do anything, and if they stand up for themselves they get beat harder and longer. Bird is a cold blooded human being, I can't believe he enjoyed this and didn't even feel bad about it. I bet the POWs being forced to punch Louie, and the other POWs felt so bad and regretful, but they had to, they had no choice. If they didn't they would get killed or beat themselves.

  18. Part of the Book: The period of time when Louie, Phil, and Mac got were drifting at sea was very interesting to me. What was most interesting is how they tried to be hopeful despite there being little to no chance that they would end up surviving. They lacked food, water, shelter, basically everything a normal human would need to survive, and yet two ended up surviving in the end.
My thoughts: I thought that the story was really inspiring, because they tried their best to never give up. I was really sad when Mac died, although I kind of saw it coming because he was going crazy, and was decaying faster than Louie and Phil. It's awesome how they survived shark attacks, being shot at, starvation, etc.
My question: Sometimes I wonder how even after everything they went through, that they still had the will to live. I mean I know that if something like that happened to me, I would probably just end up jumping in the water and drowning within the first week. It just amazes me at how much bad luck they experienced, but they still ended up staying positive.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I agree. I think that most people would have tried to take their own lives, but in this case, none of them did, which surprised me a little bit.

      Delete
    2. Do you think it was the thought of seeing their families' again that helped them get through it? Now that I think about it, if you even had the slightest chance to live, wouldn't you take that chance just in case you might be able to see your loved ones again?

      Delete
  19. Part Of Book: When Louie decided to pull a prank on his crew members, Phil, and the copilot, Charleton Cuppernell. The prank where he switched out his gum with laxatives, because he knew they were going to steal it.

My Thoughts: I think that is really funny, and has got to be my all time favorite prank that he has pulled. It was definitely my favorite because they ran out of toilet paper, and were forced to poop outside the plane. It was described of how there were artistic designs of poop splattered all over the back of the plane. I think it's kind of mean though. I get that they were just messing around, but I dont't know if I'd ever want someone doing that to me.

My Question: Do you think that it was funny, or did Louie go a little overboard? I would be kind of mad if my friend did something to me like that.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I do remember that part of the book! I thought it was a little overboard. Having to lean out of a plane to go to the bathroom is crazy! Think about it, you are in the air flying and have to lean out to go to the bathroom! If your crew mates let go of you, you're dead! I thought it was a little funny because it was such a creative idea, but a little overboard.

      Delete
    2. That was a very funny part! I think they included because it showed how crazy he was. I don't think he went overboard. I felt he was just trying to lighten the mood I think everyone was a little nervous and could use a laugh. But I might have a different view if he had done it to me.

    3. I thought that this part was soooo funny! I didn't know Louie was this mischievous after he started being a good student. I thought it was really funny when they ran out of "bathroom bags" and they had to go out the plane! I kind of felt bad for the ground crew though because they had to clean up the mess. But I also think it was a little overboard.

  20. Part of Book: Louie seemed to forget that he said he wanted to serve god forever if he survived the War. Then he was always mad at everyone, and he even forbid his wife to go to church. Finally his wife asked him to go to the tent where Billy Graham was speaking about Christianity. He agreed. Then he was about to leave because he was getting upset, and he remembered that he said he would serve god forever. All of a sudden he became nice and happy, and he forgave everyone.

My Thoughts: I was so surprised when he said he forgave "the Bird" because the Bird was the one who caused him so much pain and made his life seem not worth living. I was even more surprised when the Bird said that he would see Louie for tea, but then it made sense when he spat out that he would not. Why did Louie suddenly forgive the Bird even though he took up Christianity? It was so good when Louie was nice to his wife and friends again.

My Question: Why did Louie come with his wife to Billy Graham's speech after he told his wife never to go to the church or see friends that believed in God?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I don't know why Louie finally gave in to going to church with his wife. I think he did because once his wife came back with his daughter after leaving, that he loved her more, and trusted her more. I think he was just willing to go to it because he loved her. I was also very surprised when he forgave the Bird. I mean just before he went all nice, he was on a drinking rampage, and made ridiculous plans of killing the Bird, and was obsessed with murdering him and getting revenge.

      Delete
    2. Yeah, Louie totally loves God, then hates him. Yet he and his wife go see the famous preacher give a speech. I was kind of confused also.

  21. Part of Book: The part of the book I want to talk about is when Louie and his crew crashed in the Pacific Ocean. All they had was rafts, chocolate, a pump, very little water, a mirror, a flare gun, sea dye, fishing hooks, fishing line, and a leak patching kit. Even though that sounds like a lot of stuff, it really wasn't.
My thoughts: When I was reading the part when Mac ate the chocolate even I was feeling frustrated with him. If I had no food left and was in the middle of the Ocean, I would probably start to go crazy too. For what they had for supplies they are doing pretty well?
My Question: Would you have been mad at Mac too?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Honestly I'm not sure if I would've been mad at Mac, but I would definitely be frustrated with him for being that irresponsible. I understand that he was going crazy, but couldn't he have done something else to control himself besides eat the only food supply?

    2. I would have been mad at him but I don't think I would yell at him or anything because he already felt guilty and they were a team.

  22. Part of the Book- The part of the book I wanted to talk about is when the Bird was introduced to Louie life. He had everything as a kid. The money, schooling, and a only child.
My Thoughts- Reading on how he had everything, why is he beating people up! Targeting Louie. Once he leaves the one camp, Louie is so happy. Only to find out he is going to another camp. When he sees the Bird there I feel so bad for Louie! I also felt angry!
My Question- Were they purposely sending Louie to camps that the meanest people in, like the Bird?

    2. I think bird might have requested to have Louie because he really enjoyed beating him up. That's what I think.

  23. Part of the book- The part where The Bird always attacked Louie.
My thoughts- I thought that The bird only beat him up because he didn't fight back and just let him beat him, but he knew that he wanted to.

My question: Do you think the bird did the same thing to others?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think he did the same thing to people that were officers because they made him mad. He was jealous so he beat them up like he did to Louie. That was just his personality I guess.

      Delete
    2. I think he did bad things to other people, but Louie got the brunt of it, because it said that the bird was jealous of him for being very highly accomplished. Like Louie had all these ranks, he was a famous olympian, and had a high army rank. Since the bird applied to be a more important officer, and got rejected, the bird is jealous of Louie's accomplishments.
