Wonder - Via

Reading

Discuss Part Two

1.  R.J. Palacio chose to write this novel from multiple points of view.  How did the addition of Via's voice change the story?
2.  Tell your thoughts about Via.
3.  What did we learn about Treacher Collins Syndrome from the book?  What questions do you still have?

I think it will be easier to reply to each other's comments if you complete three different comments.  Then reply to each other's thoughts.

  1. Via changed it by telling the stuff about her life and Auggies life when he is sleeping or not there at that moment.

  2. Now that we have Via's point of view, we can see what it's like to have a family member with a disability. We also know what August looks like

    1. Yes yes it made the story better

    2. yeah thats what i thought cause she explains more about August.

    3. Yes, because I don't think August fully explained himself. He almost made himself sound some what normal.

  3. I think adding other people to tell the story made it better because it gives other peoples point of view. August thinks his way and other people think their way so it's nice to see what other people think.

    1. Yeah, also August makes it sound like he doesn't look that bad and that people staring don't bother him. When there are other points of views, you learned what he looks like and how much it bothers Via.

    2. I agree with Rachel. He said he didn't mind but everyone one knew he did.

  4. 1. I like that it changes the point of view from a different person... I like that because then we can hear different parts.. What they think.. And not just hear it from Auggies point of view.

  7. I think Via's voice changes it a-lot because it gives us a different perspective. And it's nice to get a different perspective.

    1. yes that is very nice to do. I think R.J. Palacio did great job doing that.

    2. yup i like in books to give a different perspective....

  8. What changed about the story was when she tells us how she sees from her brother august. August doesn't talk that much on how he looks like but she explains on how she feels to have a brother that was born like that and faces the words that people say at her school. I felt bad for her but she faces it anyways

    1. I agree with this one too becase he told nothing about his face all he did say is that people thought he was a ugly monster but Via told everything about his fave :)

  9. I think Via is a nice person.

    2. ya but she is ti portive about auggie

  10. I think Via is.... Well, she's nice, and mean. Both. She did say some mean-ish things, but it's not like she meant it in a mean way... I think over all she's nice..

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Thats what I thought. Like she seems mean. But she seems nice..

    2. I agree too because she is a nice sister but when August didnt answer her she flipped and so did august.

  11. Via voice changes this story a lot. Until she came in the story I was not picturing Auggie to be as bad as he actually is. She helped me picture what he really looked like.

    ReplyDelete
  12. 1.)Well Via's (Or Olivia'S) point of view or voice changed the story because she talked about what his(August) face looks like and she talked about when he was born and what she did during August being born because she was at granns house and she also talked about what August did before his face had sugery like drooling.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I changed because know Via told us how August looks and how she didn't know yet and how she was protective of him. Also she talks about how her life was when August was born.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. yeah cause when August only explained what he looked like when he was born he didn't tell much but Via did

  14. It changed the story because you don’t just hear auggie, you hear it from someone who knows that he’s not normal. I think he says stuff partly because he knows he kinda normal, but the world thinks that he’s some mutant freak. So she has changed the book because she detailed more of what was wrong with him and described some stuff he had left out.

    1. This is my first question BTW.

      Delete
  15. 1) It changed the story by adding different thoughts about Auggie.

    ReplyDelete
  16. 2. I like Via but then I dont.. Like she almost seems a little mean to Auggie.. Like when she got mad at him for not telling her about the call he got from her friend. Like if you arent going to be friends with her why do you care!! But then she also seems pretty caring of him.. Checks up on him.. Talks to him when he feels down..

  17. How did Vea's voice change the story?.... I think that it helped ME see the real Auggie instead of the way he actually feels about himself. She actually explained what he looks like then what everyone else thinks, he doesn't sound like he looks terrible it's just the way people look at him that makes it seem bad. If everyone knew he was born like that maybe he would be treated differently.

  18. 3. does everyone with TCS look the same and have eyes near their cheeks and stuff? Or is it different for everyone...?

    1. i think it makes them different because everybody is. They might have something the same but every thing else different.

  19. I like Via because i had something close like that happened to me when MIranda completely changed over the summer and she wasn't as involved. And that's not fun.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I think Via is a very selfless and indapendant person. She grew up knowing that she can't have the spotlight like August. She knew that she had to share her parents, and even though they don't show it as much as the do for August, she knows they love her. She played by herself when she was little, and figured out her homework without her parents because she knew that August needed them more.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Via's okay??....i don't really know but she said some mean things and she said really sweet things..was it jealousy that she was getting WAY less attention from her parents than Auggie..i don't know...SO confusing!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  22. I want to know more about Treacher Collins Syndrome, like what can it do to your children when you are older if you have it in your cells or yourself has it.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I think life as Via would be hard. First of all, you would be know as the girl with the deformed brother. Why would someone want to be explained as having a deformed brother? Second, she never gets ANY attention. It is always about Auggie.

    ReplyDelete
  24. My thoughts about Via are she is a nice sister but she can be over portative when she is with auggie and she can be a liltel mean to auggie when she is with him biut its auggies life so what im a soposted to do

    ReplyDelete
  25. Via is the nicest person in this book because when Augusts needs help she helps him and when shes at school and her friends talk about how her brother was deformed but she took it like a lady.its like she doesn't about how her brother looks like she still loves him the way he is

    ReplyDelete
  26. 3. Does they way it effects on him does it effect the same way on anybody that has it??

    ReplyDelete
  27. I think Via is a nice person and she doesn't care what other people sayabout her, and she is protective over August if someone looks at him weird or says something, she makes sure they regret it.

    ReplyDelete
  28. 2.)I think Via (Olivia) is a good sister who wants people to know what Auggies life was like before his surgey and after so I would say she is a neutral person because she loves her brother all of the time because of his problem but she also gets angry at him for not talking to her is this chapter.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I thought it was weird that he got 1 gene and that messed up his whole system of 3 billion of genes. WOW!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  30. I think Via is protective and really kind hearted because she shows she really cares about auggie and really doesn’t think that he’s not different from the world. But when she goes away she finally gets that feeling that other people get when they see Auggie. So then after that i think that she kinda calms down about it, because she kinda feels like guilty that she is feeling that way and when she says that people who can’t be by him are stupid, well really she’s calling herself stupid as well.

    1. This is my second question

      Delete
  31. 2) I think Via's nice because she doesn't think of Auggie as a person that is deformed & she tries to help in in school.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I know that Treacher Collins Syndrome could cause someone's face to look very different than everyone else's. Also, it is not a common disease. I wonder what else it could cause? Does it cause health problems, or does it only make your face look different?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yeah I was wondering that too, in the book it doesn't say that he has any health problems.

  33. 2.She is a person who explain her friends, like when she discribe what August.

  36. Via seems nice and caring! I like how she doesn't get upset when Auggie gets all the attention and stuff and that she understands what he's going through. She doesn't really care what she gets, but I also like how she get's upset when people look at Auggie weird, she stands up for him and I would love to be her little sister.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Yeah I agree she stands up for him and if someone says something or looks at him weird she stands up for him.

  37. When i was reading Via's point of view and how she described her brother and how he was deformed because of this disease called Collins Syndrome i learned how many children suffered and how they face their was to got to school and ignore people judging you. The kids that have that kind of Syndrome are pretty much braver than any of us.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I think that via is nice person

    ReplyDelete
  39. What I know know is that this Syndrome is very rare and doctors said to Augusts parents that he might not live but he lived, and I learned that you never give up.

    ReplyDelete
  40. 3.)What we learned from Treacher Collins Syndrome is about the eye cavitie is that the eye cavitie is small and his eyes dont fit in the eye so his eyes kind of stick out and the bottom of the eyes are like inside out. Also we learned that his teeth are splayed out with a over bite.

  42. I learned that Treacher Collins Syndrome is passed from the parents. Also, that if you get a double dose of it that you will have it. I want to know more about life with it. Kinda like the guy named Sam from science.

    1. Yeah!! I wanna see like a video like Sams on TCS!

  43. Is auggie going to do something at the end of the book and he will not get bullied.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I understand that it is a disease that affects the way you look, but I would like to learn like how many people id really affects in the world and if you can prevent it, or how many people survive like that.

    ReplyDelete

  45. 3.) I learned that not many people get it but really a lot. If Via were to get it she would have a one in four chance of getting it. The reason he has it is because something went wrong with his gene that didn’t give him that non disease gene.

    ReplyDelete
  46. 1.She added a few things like August does.

    ReplyDelete
  47. 3) Treacher Collins Syndrome from the book: a single nucleotide deletion mutation. The questions i still have are what other effect does it do other than deform their face.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I think that via dosen't always like aguie and shshe gets all the likes it when she gets all the atanchino like when she went to gramaes sge gets all the atenchen and loves it so I think she think if ague wase't here it would all be fine.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I wonder what other thing does it do to your body

    ReplyDelete
  50. 3 Trechers colinse sidrum is a very rare deseas that only efeates your face but it might need to take boanes from diffrent parts of your body. I also wonder how they might in the futer.

1 Its alot diffrent from the others because she been aroud auggie a lot longer so she is you to it and knows ever thing about him.
