CLK - Chapter 8 Discussion

After you read chapter 8, you prepared a discussion item for class.  Once again, we will do this discussion on the blog.  This time, let's keep a few things in mind.  First of all, it needs to be an event from Chapter 8.  Second, check your books to make sure the facts are correct.

The format will be the same.  Describe the event first and then tell your feelings about it.
When you are done, reply to your classmates' comments.

This blog will count as a summative assessment.

  1. My question: why did powell surrender with out a fight (even though he had a ax).
My answer :probally because he thought there was no use to fight

    2. I think it was because he just didn't want to fight he wanted to suriender

    3. I had the same thing! :D It's like c'mon you have a pick ax with you. Plus you had no problem assassinating Seward why are you not using violence now?

    4. i think he was tried of being on the run

      Delete
    5. Yes because he had already been caught in a lie and didn't do anything.

      Delete
    6. yeah..maybe.. or he just was hurt from fighting the Seward's and didn't feel like fighting..so he just gave up...

      Delete
    7. I agree too :^D because after being on the run for a while wold you feel bad about what you have done

    8. I think Powell knew that even if he escaped the house every cavalry in the city will be looking for him. And if he doesn't get out of the house & takes down couple government enforcers before getting shot in the confusion, he will be locked up in the Old Capitol Prison longer, so I think he thought better of it.

    9. I think he surrendered because he was outnumbered. And even if he did fight, he could have been shot.

    10. Because he didn't want to fight. That is my guess

    11. I also think he surrenderd because who would have cought him I mean police can be in discuse.

  2. I was wondering, why were the people at the theater rounded up? Did they think maybe one of them helped? Or maybe they were going crazy, like thinking they were in danger.

    1. ok I can get that but I think they thought that they helped him exscape.

    2. They should have not panicked. BUt was that even in this chapter?

      Delete
    3. They were rounded up because they wanted to know "what was going on up there?" "Was the president shot?" Wouldn't you be wondering?

      Delete
    4. Yes actually, it was. It said many people we rounded up. Oh now I realize they meant, the FORDS where rounded up. Not the people at Ford theater.

      Delete
    5. You honestly thought it was the people @ fords Theatere??? Well I guess at first I did too. So I don't blame you! :)

  3. TOPIC:Girl got arrested who answered the door

THOUGHTS: I thought that the interesting part was that the girl who answered the door didn't tell anything about Booth to the soldiers but gave powell up. Powell was a part of booth's plan so why just Powell?, Why not Booth?

    1. Powell* sorry

    2. They didn't arrest Booth because the didn't know where he was.

    3. They probaly arrested her because she was at he sean of the crime right...... SO they needed to ask questions or see if she was a suspect or not (even though they could have just asked her.)

      Delete
    4. I think they didn't arest booth because he was nower to be found.

      Delete
    5. Yeah, I wonder why Mary told the soldiers about Powell, but nothing about Booth. Maybe she liked Booth better, or she didn't know where booth was.

      Delete
    6. I think she knew where Booth was heading, i think it was just she wanted him to get away because she liked him.

      Delete
    7. Yes, But I wondered why she got arrested but maybe its just me. IDK!

      Delete
  4. I like that they started to capter more people because they found powell.

    1. Maybe Powell betrayed some of them.

    2. Yes I agree with Jenna

      Delete
    3. I don't like that because they arrested people that weren't even involved in the crime. Like the actors and owners of the Ford theatre. They didn't know anything about the assination, but the Union arrested them anyway.

  5. Topic: Why didn't Powell try to fight when they were trying to arrest him? (not that I'm on their side)

My thoughts: Maybe he was tired of running away and just gave up.

    1. That would be a good point, but if they interrogated Powell good enough, that could lead them to where booth is.

    4. Maybe, he was guilty of what he did and wanted to go to jail?

      Delete
    5. Because I think he wanted to give up

      Delete
    6. I think Powell knew he couldn't get anywhere and just gave up.

      Delete
    7. I don't know about you but somehow i really doubt that he just wanted to give up. (Not that i think murder is right.

  6. My topic to talk about was why didn't Powell resist arrest? He had already been brave enough to assassinate Seward. Now he is going to jail. It's like come on couldn't you have just resisted the arrest, that's the least you could have done. And also he had a pick ax with him not saying i wanted him to kill more people but, it would have been more exciting.

    1. I think he was just to tired and weak to do anything.

      Delete
    2. I was wondering the same thing. But he probably just didn't care and he might have thought "I'm going to get caught some day". And apparently that some day was that day.

    3. I think it was because he just wanted to give up.

      Delete
    4. He didn't assassinate Seward but yes I agree.

      Delete
    5. Yes, why did he decide to surrender? Was he tired? Did he know that they had known what he had done? Or was he guilty and felt he should go to jail?

      Delete
    6. I think he surrended because he was just sick and tired running from the problem that he decided to face the problem.:)

      Delete
    7. He probably just knew he wouldn't make it through and get away with it. And at the time, he probably couldn't think of a good enough lie to get away with it

    4. I don't think the government people would be dumb enough to not guard the door. Especially when he hesitated because he knew he was caught in a lie when Mary Surratt said she did not know him.

      Delete
    5. he probably dind not care if he was captured

      Delete
    6. Me too but he was surrounded by Soldiers so he couldn't get out anywhere.

  8. I was wondering why did Powell like just surrender.. Like that's good that he cooperated and everything.. But, like I was surprised he didn't try getting away..

  9. Topic: The Union had the most successful day of the whole manhunt. They arrested many leads of where Booth might be.

Thoughts: How is that successful? The people they arrested didn't tell them anything that they didn't already know. They lied about couple things & said the same thing other people already said or Union knew from clues. Then they arrested people that wasn't even a part of this.

    1. They found a lot about what happend

    2. Yes exactly, that's not sucsessful. They didn't find booth or anything...they also didin't find anything to lead them to booth

  10. Soldiers asked Mary Surratt is she knew this man and if she had hired him him to dig out a gutter for her, and she raised her right hand as if swearing an oath. She said "Before God, sir, I do not know this man; and I have never seen him and did not hire him to dig a gutter for me." Powell looked at Mary in silence. Lewis Powell had been caught in a lie.

  13. I thought it was interesting that the soldiers arrested Mary Surratt. The soldiers were at her house searching when Powell showed up and lied to them about why he was there. The soldiers asked Mary if it was true, and when she said it wasn't, they arrested her and Powell. I think it was a good thing they arrested her, because she was part of it. She thought she would get away with it by lying, but they took her away. She deserve to be arrested. If she would have told them that Powell was there to dig a gutter, they might have gotten away with it. I think that was interesting.

  14. The Event: Powell surrending to the police

My Thoughts: I know he was a criminal and everything but I am suprised he didn't try to run when he surrenended to the cop I was shocked. Because when you are a criminal you usually run for your life. If you don't do anything bad you should be fine.:)

    1. That's what i thought to.. Like, why didn't try and run or anything.. But like yeah its a good thing that he like listened by like why didn't he try and leave or anything!!

      Delete
    2. I think that he was too tired to run because he was sleeping in a tree that can't be comfortible!

      Delete
    3. I think the reason he didn't run is because the guards would have probably caught him.

      Delete
    4. I thought the same thing like most people would run and like go to a diffrent state before they would get leagly hurt or shot

      Delete
    5. Like I keep saying: he probably would have been caught with that houseful of soldiers

  15. Topic: Why didn't Powell fight with the solders he had a pickax?

My Thoughts: Why did he just let them catch him he could have fought with his pickax, I think that maybe he was tired of running away and didn't have much strength to fight.

  16. Topic:why did not the officer tell powell to put the pickax down when mary said that the man in said her house was powell .

  17. Topic: How haven't they found Booth yet?
My Thoughts: Don't you think with this big manhunt going on that someone would know where he went and tell the authorities? Like SOMEONE must have seen him leave.. or maybe the men who let Booth pass?
Like it makes no sense that NO ONE saw him leave..

    1. Thats true how did no one find him or see him!! And how did the people just let him out... Like a actor trying to get out of the city so fast!!

    2. I think that people did see him leave but he was just so good at hiding and having people that can keep secrets.

  19. How is Booth not caught yet!?!
its so weird how the man-hunters did not find him yet i think there are trying to get the other people who helped and step by step they find Booth.
