Chasing Lincoln's Killer - My Thoughts

Reading Class
For February 26, 2014

As you read chapter 6, you needed to think of one thing that you would like to discuss with your group.  Instead of a face to face conversation, we're going to have an online one with the blog.

Here's how you start.  Begin by sharing the topic that stood out to you, then follow up with your thoughts about that topic.

Then, reply to other comments with your thoughts!

Let me give you an example from Watsons go to Birmingham:
Topic:  The part that shocked me was when Kenny got tricked into losing all of his dinosaurs.
My thoughts:  Isn't he supposed to be the smartest kid in 5th grade?  Shouldn't he know better?  Why was another kid able to trick him?  Part of me thinks it might be because he is such a kind and trusting kid.  He always believes the best about others and is able to forgive people quickly.  Even though he lost his stuff, I think that I would rather be like Kenny and believe the best in people.

    1. She probably didn't want to see him because of the grief it would bring.

    2. I know maybe there is another way for for not wanting to see him suffer or maybe she can't take the risk because in the documentary she very emotional.

  2. Topic: The part that shocked me was when Dr. Mudd went on their side and not on the other peoples side.
My Thoughts: Just because they didn't do enough for him to tell he should still tell. Am I right?

    1. I also agree but also as a friend he might have just done it as a friendly thing or maybe he was agreeing that hes would help booth if Lincoln got shot.

      Delete
    2. I agree that he should have told but if he did he would be accused as a guilty for housing the two even if he didn't know.

      Delete
    3. I agree with this because even though they treated him poorly, he still risked his life to hide them.

      Delete
    4. I agree. I would tell and not let them get away with murder, no matter how much he hated Lincoln.

      Delete
    5. I think the reason that Dr. Mudd helped him because well they are friends and they on the same side.

  3. why wouldn't doctor mud rat him out I wish he did because eney one would but he din't I wish he did I thought that would be beter than just geting mad.

    1. Yes, thats true. Even though they would get mad, its still a good idea to tell that he was the one to shoot Lincoln!

      Delete
    2. Cole, here's the thing if he would have ratted him out he would go to person for housing two murderers.

      Delete
    3. Yes, I agree because hes just gonna get prosecuted with them when they find them because he hid them without telling.

      Delete
    4. still would have been good idea he could have said he was a doctor and he did't know that they were crimanals.

  4. The part that I was thinking about is since Booth is going to leave, he's still looking pretty supicious..
Like, hes a famous actor trying to get as far away as possible and as fast as he can!! Like, isn't that supicious!!

    1. I think that two like thier is a play tonight but still he wants to leve like right away.

    2. I agree because if a man with some blood on him getting out of town not letting the bridge watcher not see him and just to let him pass that is supicious.

      Delete
    3. I agree that it is very suspicious plus he has a broken leg, what if someone questioned his appearance? How would he reply?

      Delete
    4. Yeah, exactly Eve! If they started questioning what would he say?? Like he couldn't say "Oh, well I just killed Lincoln, you know the normal other than that" Like you can't say that otherwise your caught!!

      Delete
    5. The reason people did not find it suspicious is because he said he has some major emergences back @ home!!!!!

      Delete
    6. Your right. Hmmm... a famous actor running away to Maryland looking supicious and late at night, wouldn't that be weird?

      Delete
    7. I know, how does he kill the President, then get away that easily? All he had to do was wave his knife and people got out of the way, then he rode away. They even let him pass the bridge after it closed.

    1. It is sorta strange but then again she was a big help and almost like family to them, so i think she does deserve something

      Delete
    2. I agree, wanting his blood on a dress is not the greatest thing to remember people by. Or hair that's just like what are you going to do with that? Clone him?

      Delete
    3. Ya I know, but maybe the hair because they want something remember him. But its not just you that thinks its strange I also think it is strange!!!!!

      Delete
    4. Your right, why would she want a bloody strand of hair she could have something non bloody from him.

  6. Topic: I wanted to talk about how a half african american man helped them and said where the captain lived and he only got paid $7 for it.
My thoughts: Why did he help them? Like seriously they are two strangers who came and asked for the captains address. It's a little weird that he did it for only $7 that's basically being bribed for personal information. (not his but still personal)

    ReplyDelete

    1. $7 was a lot back then though so...

  7. Topic: What I got confused about is why Dr Mudd let Booth and Herold in his house.
My thoughts: Why would he let them in if they just committed a huge crime?
Why would Dr Mudd risk being sent to prison saving their lives? I think he did that because he trusted them and because they were to get out immediately.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I thought that doctor mud should rat them out but he didn't

      Delete
    2. well, because..if he didn't booth would be really mad...and he might turn in Dr. Mud....he wasn't quite part of the crime..he was accompanying the crime...

      Delete
    3. Logan, you have to remember that Dr. Mudd had no clue that they just committed a crime he was under the impression they came because of Booth's leg.

      Delete
    4. That is what i thought to Dr.mudd should rat them out.

      Delete
    5. It's because Dr.Mudd and Booth are all buddy, buddy.:)

  8. I thought about why would people want locks of his hair and stuff?
I get they want something to remember him by but why not like some NON-BLOODY clothing? Not bloody clothes and hair.. It might be just me, but it's kind of gross.. and.. strange.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. i think so to because why would people do that this kind of weird good job by the way :)

      Delete
    2. I agree to because having a lock of his hair is gross but he needs something to reamber him by I mean cant he just take a pair of blankets of his or something that is non bloddy

      Delete
    3. When you die i'm going to cut all your hair off and save it in a bottle. Fun huh?

  9. Topic: the part that shocked me was when Booth didn't tell Dr.Mudd that he killed Lincoln.

My thoughts: Don't you think that if he has the guts to go and ask to stay over and fix is leg that he would trust him enough to tell him he killed Lincoln? But then again Booth might have thought that Mudd might betray him for fame.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I agree. Why wouldn't he tell? Maybe he didn't want people to know because they might go of and tell where they are hiding, and I know they don't want that.

      Delete
    2. True, and Booth was in enough leg pain. Remember he was tired of 4 hours (or something like that) on a horse back that he went straight to bed

      Delete
    3. I thought that how would Mudd not know!!!?!?! It's not like Booth came to Dr. Mudd often.

  10. I think..wow, just wow..how could nobody see booth..i mean he walked in all suspicious..and when he killed Lincoln..he jumped right off the stage...and nobody saw him..i mean wow!....,and later...Powell almost killed Seward.. his clothes were all bloody..no one noticed that? maybe he should have changed...i don't know into some clean clothes....err.....it kind of irritates me.... :P...

    1. Tehe....never mind..but i still think it was weird..because not every one saw him....i

      Delete
    2. Exactly!!! I don't get how he wasn't caught.. Like yeah, I get it was kinda hard to get the news out that the president was shot but, like how was him trying to get out of the town so fast!! Like, did nobody think before letting him out?

      Delete
    3. That would bother me too, It's like commiting murder then walking into a police station with your shirt covered with blood and other gross things and having a blood on a knife and saying that you didn't go and kill someone....... :P

      Delete
    4. They knew who it was though, I mean the next day they did.

      Delete
    5. People saw Booth after the shooting of Lincoln. Like they know it was Booth but there was nothing to so about it.

      Delete
    6. Exactly!!! like hes all covered with blood and the guards are like"hmm bloody shirt that's not wired at all i'll let you in" what kind of guard is that

      Delete
    7. WOW!!!!!That is kinda weird I mean now these days no body cant kill someone with out being arrested of being sot at by the police but killing somebody and getting away with it it needs some hard thinking I mean that
      CRAZY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    8. Riley, he walked in during the play so everyone was watching the play instead of who was coming in. Plus, after the attempted assassination he hid in a tree.

      Delete
    9. ya,,it's so obvious..they should of thought twice and locked the doors and caught booth....err..they let him through the bridge too..just because he was a famous actor..doesn't mean ya let him through when the news got out that Lincoln had been shot...

  12. Topic:The part that shocked me was when Lincoln got shot in the booth of the theater.
My thoughts: I know it was long ago, but shouldn't the the most important man be guarded. I mean really would the president go to a theater with just him and his family, I don't think so. They should have been smarter with sercuraty then, then the president would not have been shot.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I agree they should have thought to themselves "Hmm I don't know what if some one who really doesn't like the president kill him at the theater?" I mean really someone should have had a reality check.

      Delete
    2. I just realized that Lincoln was shot in a booth by Booth. Aha. But, I agree if there would have been more security Booth would not have gotten to him.

      Delete
    3. That's true.. But they also didn't think he would get shot. But I agree with the fact he should have been more guarded!

  13. I thought i was interesting that that Laura Keene held Lincolns bloody head just to be apart of history.

Like why would you do that? Isn't that quite disrespectful? I wouldn't have let her do that. She didn't personally know Lincoln or his family she didn't care about him. she just wanted to do it for the fame. Plus was this lady crazy?!?! Who would want some guys blood all over her dress?? I get that it was the president of the united states, but still... isn't that a little unsanitary? Also, why would the doctors allow it?!? Some random woman goes up to your dying patient and wants to cradle his dead his/her dead head, would you let them?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I totally agree!! Like she didn't even know him, she just wanted to get famous. It makes no sense.. Maybe at the time it sounded like a good thing to do.. But now it's just weird and gross. I would never let some random lady cradling my patients head.. or mine! If anybody, no matter how gross it sounds, Mary. I know she wouldn't want to see her husband suffer like a foot away from her face, but if anyone should cradle his head, it should be Mary Todd Lincoln.

      Delete
    2. I strongly agree with this because that would be VERY insane to want someones blood all over you. I don't like the idea that someone would do this just to be part of history.

      Delete
    3. Yes, I agree with you. She didn't know Lincoln at all and she just wanted to go down in history. I don't think I would have liked it if someone I didn't know wanted my blood all over them. I don't think Lincoln would have liked it if he could have had any say in it. All she had to do was sit there and she instantly became famous! I guess I can see why she would do that though...

      Delete
    4. You are sooo right. Thats really mean, the president is dieing and you just want to get famous and act dramatic by putting Lincoln on her lap. RUDE!!!!!!

  14. The part that shocked me in Chasing Lincoln's Killer chapter 6 was Mary Todd Lincoln's reaction to him being shot. She cried and cried at his bedside while he was alive, but she was sent away by Stanton. I can see why Stanton took her away, but she couldn't help it that she was devastated. Then, when she found out that he had officially passed, she couldn't see him. She couldn't even go into the room he had died in, because it was too depressing to her.Just when I thought she would try to get him out of her brain completely, she asked for a lock of Lincoln's hair. I was shocked about how weird she acted when he died.

  15. The thing that shocked Me: Was that they knew the exact time that Abe's heart stopped.

My thoughts: Were that i want people to know the exact time my heart stopped and i want them to know how many times it has beated in my life and the second and everything there is to know about death, if someone could do that for me that would be awesome! Like maybe Eve, or Gisselle Or Juju or rRley. That would make me really happy.

  19. Topic: Why did the soldiers wrap Lincoln in a flag and screw the lid shut if LIncoln wanted simplicity.

My thoughts: I would think that if the soldiers & Stanton knew that Lincoln wanted simplicity why did they wrap him in a flag? And also why did they screw the lid of the coffin back then? Now a days we don't do that.
