What is a Cell?

Science
March 6, 2014

On Tuesday, we started our cell unit by looking at different things under a microscope.  Some of the things we looked at were actual cells, some were just interesting objects - like a honeybee's stinger.

Today, you're going to work with your shoulder partner again to create a definition of a cell.  You will use a movie and two different textbooks to gather information about cells.  Then you will write a definition.  All of that information is on a google doc which is linked below.

When you are done, copy and paste your definition as a comment on this post.  Be sure to put both group member names on it.

  1. Cells are the basic unit of life. They work together to keep living creatures safe. All living things, such as animals and plants, need them to live. Cells are tiny. They can fit around 10,000 cells on the head of a pin. Also there are many different kinds of cells, used for many different things.

  2. Have you ever wondered what a cell is? Well.. A cell is the smallest unit of life, and every organism has them. They are SO small, that you can only see them with a microscope. Cells come in all shapes and sizes. Different cells have different jobs. They work to keep all organisms safe!! There are 2 types of cells, unicellular, and multicellular. There are about 100 trillion cells in the human body, and you need all of them!! They also have like 500 cell reactions a SECOND! That’s a lot!! Clearly, Cells are VERY important! (:

  3. All life is made of cells, & comes in different shapes & sizes. All living things have at least one cell, Cells are the basic unit of supporting life and the smallest. Their chemistry are mysterious still to us & has held life on Earth for billions of years. They are so tiny that 10,000 of them can fit in a head of a pin. Cells need energy, materials, living space. They need nitrogen, oxygen, Carbon Dioxide, & water. Without those, cells can die. All cells come from existing cells. The cells in our body undergo over 5 quadrillion chemical reactions every second.

  4. What is a cell?
A cell is in every living or nonliving organisms. Plant cells are different than leaf cells. Many cells work together to carry out the basic activities of life. Cells have 500 quadrillion chemical reactions every second. Cells have been on Earth for billions of years. Robert Hooke was the first person to discover cells. Muscle cells have special parts that allow them to move. In 1831 robert brown discover the nucleus of a plant cells. In 1838 schleiden discovered all plants are made of cells. Schleiden, Schwann, Hooke, Leeuwenhoek and Brown all developed the cell theory.

  5. First of all, there are many types of cells. Including brain, bone and muscle cells. They are the basic building block of life. Different cells have different jobs. For example, white blood cells help fight off diseases. Cells got its name from a scientist named Robert Hooke. Cells are very small and you wouldn't be able to see them without a microscope.

  6. All life is made out of cells. The human even has over 1 trillion cells. Cells are a basic building block of life. It is also the smallest living thing capable of life. Many organisms have different traits. All organisms need the space and energy to grow, otherwise they will die. This is what makes a cell.

  7. A cell is a the smallest living thing.Cells help perform all activities in life. You need lung cells and heart cells to live for example. We have over 100 trillion in our body. All cells come from other cells.Cells are the basic unit of life

  8. Every living thing has cells. Theres over 100 trillion cells in a body. They come in all shapes and sizes. Theres over 500 quadrillion chemical reactions a second. Cells are the main part of life. Robert Hooke was the first person to observe a cell. Living things have the characteristics of organization ability to develop and grow ability to respond to the environment ability to reproduce. Some cells are so tiny you can’t see them. All organisms are made up of one or more cells.

  9. Robert Hooke was the first one to observe cells. The cells are the smallest living thing.Cells make up body parts and help us move. All life is made up of cells. All planets are made up of cells. Cells protect us from harm. Cells are so small you can barely observe them with a microscope.

  10. Robert Hooke was the first person to study cells. A cell is part of all living things, and they are the building blocks of life. Cells are tiny enough, you could fit 10,000 on the head of a pin. Some cells grow and change, while some are complex living things, they have different parts that do different things.

  12. A cell is the smallest unit of life. Cells are so small that you can’t see them without a microscope. For example the human body is made up of 100 trillion cells. Some animals are multicellular, that means that they are made up of different cells and not just one. Humans are multiclar.

  13. All life is made of cells, even the unicellular organisms. Cells are the basic unit of life and are formed from already existing cells. They come in thousands of shapes and sizes, plus the human body has over 1000 trillion cells. Cells are the smallest living unit of life. Clearly cells are small but make up our lives as we know it.
