Out of the Dust - Summer 1934

Reading

Your assignment for this section is to have a blog discussion about the events of Summer 1934.  Instead of me telling you what to write about, you will choose what you want to discuss.  Make sure that you give your full opinion with a lot of detail.  Then reply to others' comments.  Make sure you have a quality reply.  Cool :) is not a reply.

    1. Yeah, I agree. Why do they have to blame anyone? It was a complete accident, so why does anyone have to be at fault?

    3. The people may not have realized that it was an accident, but they STILL shouldn't have blamed only Billy Jo.

    4. I agree also, i think they should blame it on dad because hes the one he put the kerosene by the stove but still people blame it on Billie Jo

    5. they did not know he went out

    8. I agree too because it was very important because she was trying to save her house and then it was important to her farther because she was 14 and the farther and aunt were 14 years apart. :)

  2. I didn't like that the ladies that came and cleaned their house after the accident all blamed it on Billy. It wasn't all her fault, why did they have to make her feel that bad about it? Who even told them that? Did her dad tell them it was her fault? He wasn't even there when it happened, also, he is the one who left the bucket out.

    1. I didn't like that ether like the dad left the pot their filled with carisen.

    2. Well people always have to blame something on somebody so for whatever reason they chose to blame Billie Jo.

  3. What i thought was interesting was why did the dad leave the bucket of kerosene by the stove. He know(at least i think he knows) that mom cooks there and makes his coffee there so when she sees a bucket there shes gonna assume that its water he brought in.

    1. Exactly! I know he didn't mean to do any harm, but he also didn't stop the ladies from gossiping about Billy. He knew he left it there, yet he still let people say that it was all Billy's fault.

    2. Well like Ms. DeVries said, he probably came in to eat a sandwich or whatever, and then forgot totally about it.. I just don't think he would leave it there knowing she was going to cook...

  4. I cannot believe that the mother died. Also, that the child died. And when the mothers sister came to take the baby, why didn't she take Billy Jo back to Lubbock too?

    1. yes, I agree she drove all that way to go and get "Franklin" and he died before she got there so she should've taken Billie Jo.

  6. I want to blog about the flower scorching in the sunlight. I think when the dad didn't tell her she couldn't go, it meant that he wanted her to think of happy things and not think of her ma. But when it scorched. She thought of her mom and didn't see anymore of the flower because the flower was the mom and the scorching was the kerosene.

    1. I think the dad just did care. It was terrible for him to let her go. What if a dust came?!?!

    2. Yah what idid was instead i said the flower was the mom and the sunlight was kerosene.

  7. During the Summer i felt really bad about her mother because when Billie Jo tried to get the burning pot out of the house it accidentally hit the mother. After that i felt really sorry for Billie Jo when she said that it was all her fault and when really surprised me is when the baby and the mother died. I was really really sad.

    1. Ya I said that like all the girls clening the house blamied it on bill jo when his dad left the careisen.

  8. I think when her mom died it was soooo sad. Especially because of that one night the dad just drank and didn't do anything. That probably could have helped a LOT if he didn't, because they would still have all that money and they could pay for a doctor and ma probably would've lived...
Another thing is like with the kerosene, it was no ones fault, everyone had a part in it. Dad left it there, ma thought it was water, Billie went back inside to throw it out, and ma was in the doorway and got set on fire. See? It was no one specific fault...

    1. Your right It was no ones fault it was an accident. Also if the dad would have been there the mom would have lived because Ma wanted water but Billy Jo couldn't give her water because her hands were swollen.

      Delete
    2. Exactly, why didn't her dad tell the ladies that were gossiping about it? He should have stepped in and said, "Hey, stop saying it's billy's fault, it was no ones fault!"

  9. I feel like talking about the medical quality there was back in the dust bowl. When Billie Jo got burned the doctor just cut off the skin and bathed the hands in antiseptic. As far her mother goes though, she was on a bed with nothing but a sheet as a tent. It's like come on you could have at least taken her mom's baby by using a C-section like now days but they just and to make her go through even more pain and deliver the baby. It's like seriously you couldn't do anything better than out her under a sheet!?

    1. Right! Especially because the doctor was right there, why couldn't the doctor do something about the mom then?

  10. What I thought about summer was it was really sad because Billy Jo's mom died and her baby brother too, she thinks its all her fault because she threw the pail but it was an accident. And after that her dad is very hart broken and he doesn't really talk to Billy Jo so she is really lonely and sad. :( I can't imagine how she feels.

    1. Yes I agree and Becky Jo probably feels sick inside. I know I would.

    2. Me either but those people that she heard talking about how it was her fault probably made her feel worse about it.

    3. Its not Becky Jo it's Billy Jo.

  11. I think that it's sad that everyone was blaming Billie Jo for the burns on Ma. She didn't mean it and the people who were blaming her should have gotten it straight that she didn't mean it and that Billie Jo had to get it out of the house, and she didn't mean to throw it at Ma. She didn't know she was coming back in so soon. Also the dads the one who should have known not to put the kerosene by the HOT stove. That's common sense right there.

    1. I KNOW RIGHT the people that knows the mom blames it on Billie Jo who does that!! really.

  12. When the ladies were cleaning the house and blamed it on Billie Jo. And acted like it was ALL her fault. Like its not like she meant for that to happen. Its not like she wanted to do that to her mom.. But it was kinda that dads fault because he left the kerosene out...

    1. Exactly, why didn't the dad step in and tell them it wasn't her fault. It was a complete accident, how could he not tell them that.

  14. The bad part was that dad had caricin by the stove and ma thought that it was water and she put it on the stove and then it cought on fire so then it fell on the floor and was going to burn the hole house so mom ran out the house and so did billy joe but then mom went to go get dad but billy joe grabbed the bucket and he throws it out the door and it landed on mom and it caught her on fire and billy throw her to the ground to try to stop the fire but he did but she was burt bad but she lived for a little bit but then she passed away

    1. It's everybody's fault but nobody's fault..dad's because he left gasoline ( i don't know how to spell..) by the stove and mom's fault because she thought it was water and Billie Jo's fault be cause she threw the gasoline at her mom..but yet mom and Billie didn't know...

  15. What I thought was interesting was at the beginning of the season a boy came and asked for food and the mother gave him biscuits and milk.he offered to work for this meal and she sent him out to work with Pa.Then he offered the boy who was about 16 for a bath, haircut, and a change of clothes and he said much obliged and then Billie Joe saw him walking down the road and she thought what if I walked to Californa and she thought and thought.

    1. It showed that Billie's family was really nice, fair and helpful. it also showed that Billie really wanted to leave the Dust Bowl. Do you think that her Dad will ever go? Will she ever go alone?

  16. I think when Billie Jo threw the pail of kerosene on her mother, she probably felt VERY regretful. Then when the mom died, she probably felt even worse, because she threw the pail.

    2. I agree because that her mom was dead then her brther died and she felt bad because she through the pail but it was her dads fault because he left the carisine by the pot.

  17. In the summer of 1934 i felt bad for billy Jo's family when they lost the mom and the new born baby. I think its half the moms foult and the dads foult, and billy jos foult to. I think its the dads foult becaues he left the kerosene next to the stove, i THink its the moms foult tooo cuz she did not thow it out when she ran out of the house, and I think its billy jos foult cuz she should have thot befor she thow it. and that my story.

  18. I really thought it was interesting when she wrote the poem about as soon as the sunlight touches the flower it crumbles and dies. I think that meant her mom is the flower and the kerosene is like the sunlight hitting its object.

  19. I thought that it was sad that the mom had died while giving birth. And the little one had died. I watched a movie where the mom had killed the baby because she wanted this giant house. So she poisoned them by giving them these crumpet things that had had "powdered sugar" that was really poisoned. The littlest one had died because his immune system wasn't strong enough. The second littlest one dis not die. And the two oldest didn't eaither. The poison was in the powdered sugar. Who doesn't like powdered sugar. IT"S yummy, really good on these sweetish pancake things my mommy makes.
