  1. She did pretty good she included the storms and what people did when the storms hit like cover the beds, put rugs against the doors, and dampen rags around the windows. And how the farmers must have felt when the rain did not come and their crops did not grow or would get blown away or buried by the dust.

    1. Yes, she did a good job on what people thought and did, but as for showing how bad it was, she could have done much better. I don't think she showed the readers that everything was really bad.

    2. I think she did good on that and I think she did good when like they said people started to hate each othor.

    3. I agree that she did a good job on the things that happened when the dust came and rain didn't

    4. But the dust bowl movie did better at the details and showing every thing, but we are only in the like 1st chapter.

    5. That was i thought too many people did that and in the movie we watch i one of the persons said that it was like a rain storm but with dust. nice job :).

    6. Divya, I agree she did great detailing things about how they dampened the rags and stuff, and the farmers much have been SO sad because they couldn't make that much money.. But then again, no one had money to buy a lot either so even if you had crops you wouldn't get a lot of money. It's confusing but true.

  2. I don’t think the author has been very good at the details of the dust bowl so far. The movie really told how bad it was. I think the author should have talked to more people that were in the Dust bowl, to make it seem more like how it actually had been. The movie had primary sources that show how horrible it really was. The book tells you that it had been years since it rained and people were broke, but it doesn’t show you like the move does. If I hadn’t have watched the movie, I wouldn’t have realized how bad the Dust Bowl really was.

    1. I don't get why you don't think the author did a good job. She did do a good job describing how bad the dust storms were and how bad the dust was too. Like how Billie Jo's father came in from the dust storm & caughed & spit out mud.

    2. Yes, I agree with that part, but when Billy went into the store, the author said that everything was coated in dust, but she didn't say that it was from the dust storm and not because of the store being old. Just my opinion...

    3. Yes she didn't have a lot of details in the book than the movie did but she probably didn't see the movie.

  3. I think that She did a good job on the book and she related some of the stuff with the move too I think she captured most of the stuff like when they killed the rabbits and people started to hate each other

    2. I think she did good too like how they put rugs on their door son they could keep the dust away. nice job by the way :).

    3. She did do a good job on saying how people started to hate each other, and that they killed the rabbits.

  4. I think she did pretty good. She described how that when Billie Jo’s dad came in from the dust, he blew his nose & mud blew out & when he coughed & spit he spit out mud.

    1. Yeah, that was pretty good. I think she could have done better on all the details though. She wrote how people hated the Dust Bowl, but she never really explained what it was and how bad it was.

    2. Well she kinda did when she described when people spit out mud after they came out from the storm & that it was loud enough to wake people up in the middle of the night.

  5. I think she did a very great job on showing the fighting over little things that might not have been in the movie like people fighting over who could the most rabbits or people being cheated out of money. BUt most of all i like how she explained the good and the not so good things about what happened. She captured how their were people born at home and dust getting in EVERYTHING.

    1. I thought that they had good job on that to.

  6. I think she captured it pretty well. She included all about people moving away and dying. There a lot more to what was similar than what wasn't. She didn't really mess up on anything. Honestly she did an amazing job.

    1. She did ok, but there aren't really feelings in the book about her mom or her dad.

    2. She did good on the people moving, but I think she could have done better so far on explaining how bad it was. Like when she went into Hardly's store & it talked about the dust coating everything, but she didn't exactly clarify on the it was the dust storms, and not just an old store. Other than her not putting many details on there, the book has been good so far.

  7. I think Karen did a pretty nice job, although there might’ve been some stuff that she might not put in the book, because it wasn’t related to the storyline and that’s fine. The number one thing that i don’t think would’ve happened was a little girl playing for the president. I get the fact that it was Karen idea of the book, but why would someone choose her to play for the president. After all, she was from a pretty small town in the middle of nowhere. I guess i could say that it doesn’t really make sense that the president, would go a town where he could get really injured, by the dust. After all,the president should be the most safe person in the state. He runs it, so it’s only fair.

The author really doesn’t put her ma’s feeling in the book. It would be a great thing if she could work on that becase then we know what it was likek for her parents, but not just her.

  8. She did pretty good but she needed a little more information like how did they storm came or when did it happen was it night or day. And also Many people didn't just run into the storm and see their plantation. BUT the way she organized was pretty good :).

    1. I think she did good on saying people were fighting about almost not thing and they used to be friends.

    2. It was good, you do have a very good point, like did the ground shake or could you just hear the feirce wind. Who would wanna run into a sand storm, normally you's ranna run out of it, not into it.

  9. I think she did a pretty good job but it didn’t sound very depressing and sad. It’s not particularly happy, but it’s not all dark and gloomy...
But I think she did a great job of putting in details about dust and dirt everywhere. Its really gross having to chew your milk, but she did a good job of putting that stuff in.

    1. Yah i agree because when she was writing about Livie it sounded soooo depressing and when she got to be in the concert it was like "yeah i'm in a concert......"

  10. How well did Karen Hesse do at capturing what it was like to live in the Dust Bowl in 1934?
I think that she did good on explaining things and making the story seem real! but I think she needs to work on real things, like how she said that Billie Jo had to go and get stuff for a cake for her father. I mean what sort of mother sends their kid into dust to get stuff for a cake for a birthday, I mean really birthdays come and go.

  11. She did a pretty good job explaining.. Had chunky milk. Some people had faith… Thought it was going to rain, and just kinda hoped for it and took it day by day. But the things she didnt do to well on were Billie’s mom let her walk to the store, get the stuff. But then not only go back again… Wasnt she worried? Wouldnt Billies mom be nervous something would happen to her? Everyone Billie is talking about seems to have hope for rain.. But when people were killing themselves because they didn't have hope… But overall she did pretty well..

  12. I think she has done a good job so far. When she was describing about the chunky milk and how she talked about the field of lights and how the lightning was. I think she added that concert thing just to add that some good things did happen.

  13. How well did Karen Hesse do at capturing what it was like to live in the Dust Bowl in 1934?

I think that she did good at telling about the storm and how people could die from it and that people did actually kill people because of the wind blowing it right in peoples house that is how strong the wind was because it blow in peoples houses and the girls would send all day trying to clean the house but they could never keep it clean. And that people started to hate each other even they were best friends.

  14. I think Karen Hesse did a pretty good job at describing the life in the dust bowl. When Billie Jo asked her mother if she could go to Joyce city, she of course said no because she probably would have been worried. She also described what Billie Jo saw when that dust storm came and the lightning struck through it. But, she didn’t do a very good job at saying details: there were only few broad details, but not too many great features. And after the storm it didn’t say in the movie that it snowed during the dust storm itself.

  15. She did it very well. I think she had a lot of notes from the documentary. Like when they had to kill the rabbits, they had to cover beds, they swallowed the horrible dust, they had to chew their milk, the dust ripped the wheat right out of the ground. I think what she did bad on was she didn’t say how dark the dust storm was, and what they had to wear on their faces whenever they went out so they didn’t inhale the dust.

  16. That was a good answer. I think she did well too.

  17. I thought she did good explaining what they were doing when the dust came in because they said that they blocked the windows. She also did a good job explaining what the setting was like because she said it came in like a fired locomotive.I think she could work on is that the people sould not run outside.

  18. she did good like how she interview people the thing and tell about the soil from oakland going to the east she did bad was like showing pictures
that was not real and she could add more details to some peoples stories
