Out of the Dust - Autumn 1935

Reading Class
April 30th

Autumn 1935 concludes Billie Jo's Diary.  Now that we've finished the book, we need to work on our theme assignment.  For that assignment, I want you to describe Billie Jo at the end of the book, and make some inferences about what the theme might be.  But before you do what I want you to do.....

Use the blog to write your reaction to the book and reply to each other's comments.

Then work on the Theme Assignment
Have that done for tomorrow!

  1. I liked the book because the way it was written like it wasn't any normal writing it was all in poems. I'm glad that Billie decided to let Louise in her heart and home.

    1. I like that too, i love to read poems, because they are all so different. I really love ones about love, those are the deepest ones. My favorite poem is actually a kids nusurey rhyme and here it is.

If I die before i wake,
Do not cry and don not ache,
      Nothings ever yours to keep,
so close your eyes and go to sleep.

  2. One thing amazing!!! I can't believe hes getting married again.. I mean yeah people heal differently, but still.. It seemed kind of early for him to get remarried. But hey as long as hes happy and the family happy, I guess. That's all that matters.

    3. Exactly he shouldn't think about himself right away he should think about the family. ;)

  4. This book was very different then what i'm use too. I think that I would never be able to forgive myself for throwing the kerosene out the door. If that happened now a days would you get charges for murder?

    1. Oooooooh, I think you would get charges.. Well, Maybe, like, it was an accident but.... Still. I'm not sure if he would be charged for murder?

  5. I loved the book, it was happy, sad, scary when she was alone, and it was full of emotion. I'm still weirded out that he got over Polly that quick though!! You could tell he was sad for SO long,.. And I know people can get over things super fast, but the LOVE of your LIFE just DIED.. And you got over it in months? And then you meet this other girl and after a few months, you marry her!? I know things were different back then, but part of me says Pa just wanted someone to take care of the house, and he doesn't really actually LLLOOOVVVEEEE Louise. I don't know, it just is weird to me.

    1. yah i but you never know matbe this a way to hide his feelings

    2. I think like what Ms.DeVries said since things were different back then, he might have just thought Billie needed a mom figure.. So she wouldn't go on without a mom...

    3. I know, how did he decide to marry her so quickly. Maybe the book just made it seem quick, though. I also don't understand how Billy got used to Louise so fast. If it were me, I would've hated Louise. Not that she was a bad person or anything...

    4. I know right this book was like where are you going with this, my emotions are freaking out here.

    5. I agree Rachel, especially since they were getting married.. I'd have been like NOPE NOPE I don't need no mom figure get outta my house lady!!

    6. I know right how could somebody move on that fast from the love of there life!!!

    7. i just think he should like slow WAY DOWN!!!!!!!!!

  6. Wow, I can't believe that Billy adjusted to Louise so quickly! If my mom died, I would have a hard time with my dads girlfriend. I think it helped that Louise wasn't too pushy though.

    1. Yeah that would be a problem. I don't think I would adjust that quick

    2. True. They have only been seeing each other for about three months. That's a little early.

      Delete
    3. Yeah i think it also helped that Louise wasn't too pushy with Billie

  7. I think that it had the wirst ending because they never told them did they get mared or did she die of dust umoua or did she leve him or go suisidel.

    1. i agree i wish it would tell more at the ending like if they ever had hope and also if they had a baby or something like that.

    2. Well good books have to leave people hanging and have questions and leave mysteries in the readers minds.

    3. Pa is still living and who is she?

      Delete
    4. I agree too because it didnt have a full marrage picture it did not give any thing of what happed at the wedding.

    5. Uh..Lacey...if you don't already know this...Ma died..and dad found a new wife....

  8. ....Okay...I liked the book..but it's really sad..i like the ending most because its happy and Billie Jo has her hands back and Daddy is happy with Louise..i mostly like the ending because it said good words and detail like ' i catch her reflection in the mirror standing in the kitchen soft eyed while Daddy finishes chores i stretch my fingers over the keys' and play'

  10. OH MY GOSH!! I love this book there needs to be a second one for sure like the book can't just end there it needs an ending! I think that Karen Hesse needs to make another book or something because that book... needs an ending. It's like does daddy marry Louise. Does Billie Jo start playing for Arley again. WHAT HAPPENS!!!! There needs to be an ending to this amazing book! I think I should start reading more non-fiction books. (mostly because the non-fiction books that we have read so far have been like totally amazing!) This was an amazing book about the dust bowl and i think that it needs another one to add to it. (like I said before)

    2. I know right...why do good books and songs have to end!?!?!?

      Delete
    3. Yeah, I agree. I think this book was really good, but it ends too soon. I wish she would've done a little bit about after their wedding. That would've been cool.

  12. Billie Jo really changed her attitude a lot from the beginning of the book to the ending of the book. She went from being happy in Autumn 1934, to depressed in Summer 1934, then started to let Louise into her life.

  13. My thouts about the book are why did they have to kill the mom why did they not just leave the mom in the story and the ending ogf the could have been better and why did they name the mean person billie jo, Why is the dad geting mairred to a girl that he barlly knows and billiy jo dose not know, why did they not just leave the litter brother to.

  14. I thought the book was good but it was sad when her mom died. After her mom and franklin died I didn't know how the book was going to get better. But then it got better because her dad was talking more to her, and he was expressing himself more. Then Louise came into the story and at first I didn't think it was going to work then everyone warmed up to her and things got better.

  16. While we were reading the book i thought that Billie jo was going to be miserable for the rest of her life. THAT'S my opinion, but when we were about to read the end i was wrong. The chapter called "Finding a way" i was just amazed how Billie jo had changed. It was pretty awesome how Billie went to sad to sadder, and now she's more mature and now i bet she ready to move on with her life and have hope and a new life.

  17. I think it was a good book the part that i thought that was the worst was when the mom died because i think that would be hard for the kid to move on in her life because just not her mom died her little baby brother died to and that is even worse

  18. I'm surprised that Billie Jo has changed alot since the beginning of the book like how she accepted the way she is & adapt to things that were just an accident.

  19. I love how Billie Jo just seems like she wants Louise apart of her life. I was but wasn't surprised when she didn't let Louise go to where Ma and Franklin were buried.

  20. My thoughts of Billie Joe at the end of the book is exepting I know this dosent make scene yet but it soon will.she exeptd that her dad is redy to move on and get married again. She also changed her personatly tword her dad.At the begining of the book she was blamed for kind of killing her mom but she said it was her dads fault but she changed from blameing to expeting.
