Short Research Project
During this season, Karen Hesse references (talks about) several different things that really happened in 1935. Today, you will be picking one that you are most curious about and completing a short research project about it. We're going to continue to work on our research skills. So, once you pick your topic you will be focusing on which key words to use for research. When you find a good source, you will need to check it out and figure out what your subtopics should be. Then you will be ready to take notes that you can use to make a paragraph. The notes sheet has spots for all of these steps.
You will be sharing your paragraph about your topic on the blog. Once you've shared, reply to others' paragraphs.
Spring 1935 Short Research Project
Black Sunday was one of the worst storms in the history of America. Lots wonder what really happened and what really happened was this huge burst of wind came and blew all this dust around through Colorado and Kansas, it ripped away 5 million acres of wheat. It was a lot worse than it sounds. Many people died from Dust Pneumonia. Right when people thought that maybe just maybe the dust had gone away in came back 10x worse. People had been outside because it was such a nice day. Others had all their windows and doors open. When the dust rolled in everybody and everybody's stuff was covered in dust. The families that were on the picnics weren't so lucky either, with nowhere to go, some suffocated from all the dust in their lungs. People with farms, their animals suffocated. Secondly, What did the people do about it? Most people weren't home when this happened. It was a really nice day so people were either going on a picnic or just enjoying the weather. When the dust came there was no where for them to go so most people just tried to find the nearest shelter. So couldn’t find shelter though and died. People that did have shelter, wettened towel and rags and put them over cracks in the houses so the dust wouldn't come it. They didn't have dust-proof masks so they just put wet rags over their mouths. It didn't keep out all the dust, but it was better than nothing. Overall, this way a terrible day to live in history.
ReplyDeleteI agree it was a pretty bad day to live in, but i dont think you have to say"in history"
DeleteWow, that must have been horrible. It's even more sad because no one saw it coming. It was too late. If I were them, I wouldn't leave my windows open ever after that.
Deletei agree many people say that the storm was so thick that if you out your hands up in front of you, you couldn't see your hand. I really feel bad for them. Good job :)
DeleteThat's so terrible.. Like Rachel said, I would never want to leave my windows open after that!!
DeleteHave you ever wondered about the huge dust storm on Easter Sunday in 1935? First of all it was also called Black Sunday or Black Easter because it was on a Easter Sunday. It was on April 14, 1935. The skies were blue and clear. Many thought this was the break from the dust that was waiting to happen. After all after weeks of dust storms destroying 5 million acres of farmland and crops. It was hot outside that families could not resist opening their windows and going outdoors to have picnics or work on postponed jobs due to dust storms. By mid-afternoon the temperature was as cool a 50 degrees. Then a little after mid-noon people started noticing birds fluttering away like trying to escape an unseen enemy. By then most but not all families noticed to dust cloud advancing towards them. They raced for their homes and quickly tried to secure their windows and doors. A few miles before the dust front hits the wind starts to pick up. Some people did not notice the dust storm until it was practically on top of them. By then they were all scrambling for their homes or the nearest shelter they could find from the dust. A lot of people were at church or funeral. The storm hit Boise City, Oklahoma at 5:35 p.m. It rose to 500-1,000 ft high. It was dark reddish/brown. The color of their soil. The impact of it was like taking a shovel full of dust and slamming it into your face. When the storm hit many tried to get away in their cars, but most if not all was shorted out by static electricity. When families couldn’t get their car started they ran to nearby homes or abandoned huts. The dust was so thick that people couldn’t even see 2 inches to their hands. When the storm blew by it was measured 10-30 ft of dust. The dust mad 105 miles from Boise City, Oklahoma, to Amarillo, Texas, in a hour & 45 minutes. Clearly now you can see or imagine how terrible Black Easter was. It caught many families out of their homes which the windows were open and dust flew in piling up in corner or doorways.
ReplyDeletewow..... If i were in that storm i'd find the nearest shelter like what others did, good job :)
Deletelol yeah thnx
DeleteI would be hurt if I never knew a dust storm was here and a bunch of sand piled on top of me.
DeleteIm so glad that didn't happen this Easter.
DeleteDuring the Dust Bowl in the 1930s, there were a lot of people ill with Dust Pneumonia, what that is is actually really interesting, it comes along with bad symptoms, though. First of all, you have to know what Dust Pneumonia actually is to understand the effects. Dust Pneumonia occurs when someone breathes too much dust into their lungs. The dust stops your lungs from clearing themselves out by coating your cilia in dust. Your cilia are little hairs inside your lungs in charge of keeping everything in function. Most people that got this lung infection were slowly weakened until they died. Finally, the symptoms to this infection are horrible. People with dust pneumonia usually experienced coughing, trouble breathing, chest pains, and even fever. People that got this infection in the 1930s were usually in Texas, Colorado, Oklahoma, and Kansas. People could get a disease called black lung that coal miners sometimes get, because there was lots of silica in the prairie dust. Black lung is a disease that pretty much explains itself, breathing in that type of dust turned your lungs from pink to black. Some people thought that they could heal their dust pneumonia with home remedies. People tried rubbing lard, gasoline, kerosene, and skunk oil on their chest hoping it would help. Some people though they could increase their chances of healing by mixing all of these ingredients together and putting them on their ches. That didn’t actually do anything. Clearly, there is more to Dust Pneumonia that meets the eye.
ReplyDeleteThats really good!!! I didnt know like any of that!! Nice job!
DeleteI really like all the detail you put into that, nice job.
DeleteI like how you said that black lung is a disease that practially explians itself.
DeleteThanks you guys. The black lung disease does explain itself, its having a black lung!! ha haThat must have hurt a lot...
DeleteEaster of 1935 wasn't the best Eater for people. It was a nice day out. Bright and sunny. One of the nicest days after all of the dust storms. Everyone was out and having a good day. Went to church. Maybe had a picnic. Had their windows open, and just everyone was enjoying the nice weather. But then… The temperature dropped. Then people saw a GIANT black cloud coming in. People were scared. It was known as “Black Sunday”. The storm that turned day into night. Many people thought the world was coming to an end.
ReplyDeleteThe Phillips family, have a different story to be told. In the family was Ed (the dad), Ada mom) and then their 6-year old daughter. They had to stop on their way home in a house with 10 other people! They talked with other families. And one of the guys almost lost his wife. His wifes car was shorted out by electricity. She decided to walk ⅓ of a mile home. His daughter went to go get help because of the car. But his wife wandered off in the road. Going threw the blinding dust. Luckily the eventually found her.. Well many families had to stop at peoples houses because they could not drive home. Luckily people were friendly and let them stop!
Wow. That must have been horrible. I can't believe Ada tried to walk home in the dust. She probably learned her lesson never to go outside in a dust storm. Though staying there wouldn't have been any better....
DeleteWhy do they always try to walk home instead of taking shelter?
DeleteI chose to research Black Sunday. It struck me because sunday (for most of the world) is a holy day, so would think that there’d be some nicer weather. The two things i researched about it were What was it, and what did people have to do to get out of it. Black sunday was one of the most devastating storms of the 1930’s, so bad people thought the world was coming to an end.It was so bad people started calling it the Black Blizzard. The dust had blocked out all warm sunshine rays, and the temperature had dropped within 10 minutes. It was so bad the winds had kicked up to at least 60 miles per hour. Jeez, can you imagine being caught in that storm? Yikes, that would stink. The next topic I chose was What did people have to do to get out of the dust. Some people on the road like little kids or teens or even adults had to get out of their cars and look for some type of shelter. Some people hid in their barns to watch over their cattle, while others went inside and closed the windows and locked their doors, but not even that kept the wind and dust out. Imagine, That would stink on such a nice sunday, everyones outside and then there’s a big bad dust storm, what a cruel thing that was.
ReplyDeleteOh, that would have been so horrible. Everyone outside enjoying the great weather that all of a sudden, BOOM. Giant dust storm. Wow, 60 miles per hour wind. It's crazy that anyone actually live through that!!
DeleteI now right that shocked me too, just like BAM insta dust storm
Deletewow there's like many different names for it like "black Sunday", "black Easter" and even "black Blizzard" and many more
DeleteThat is bad everyone was outside and then a Black Sunday came and surprised everyone.
Deleteyah wow, a million names
DeleteI thought that that was real bad like somen people were out side and the winows were open.
DeleteWhat did Dust pneumonia do? The dust bowl accord in the 1930’s during that year many people suffered a disease for example one of them is Dust pneumonia. Many day when people are inside their houses they couldn't breath that well especially the old and young.
ReplyDeleteWhen people breathe the thick dust air their lungs starts to close down on the. When many people had dust pneumonia they don't just have trouble breathing but also they have, high fever, chest pains and bad coughing. Many old and young people didn't usually survive that kind of disease only if they get a doctor, and getting a doctor during that time wasn't easy. Clearly during the dust bowl many didn't just have any jobs but the worst thing that could happen is losing a family member. What did affect them? Many people were forced to leave their homes and some just stayed .Over 2.5 left homeless and 7,000 dead mostly of hunger or dust pneumonia . Those who lived through this tragic dust storm were tough but many not.
Those people from oklahoma, New Mexico, kansas texas, colorado, and Iowa many people die in those places especially Oklahoma, Boise city.
Many people that had dust pneumonia would sometimes traveled from where they live all the way to California. Many didn't survive and many did. Obviously many people with dust pneumonia was pretty hard for them with the storm and stuff and even death. In conclusion living during the dust storm was pretty harsh especially for the people that have dust pneumonia.
I like how you explained that to me, well not just me, but thanks anyway. NOw i know what dust pneumonia is.
DeleteI like how you exsplanded that it happend to youg old and what it did.
DeleteThe lindbergh baby kidnapping was a long mistery.See on march 1 lindbergh wife found a ransom note saying that the kidnappers wanted 50,000$ for the baby wanted not until april 2 that they gave instructions for dropping off the money. It was a six year investigations.John knoll was accused over kidnapping lindberg jr.Cemetery John the man who got the 50,000 ransom. The baby was found two months later died in the woods 1 mile away from lundbergs house. The lundbergs move out of their house and gave it to charity after this.
ReplyDeleteaww...that's sad when the baby died D:
DeleteAwwe that's ad
DeleteI watched a show about that that said they killed who they thought did it, then found out it was someone else, though the guy they killed was a part of it. I thought that was a very sad story.
DeleteIt was sad when the baby died
DeleteWoe, i never would have thought that you would think that you would fell this way dezzy. I thought you weren't into this, but yea it was sad.
DeleteA lot of babies died in the dust storm :(
DeleteHave you ever wondered what it would be like to have FOUR identical twins, other than you. Well The Dionne Quintuplets were five identical twins, that miraculously survived, and their story is truly amazing.
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, The Dionne Quintuplets are 5 identical girls that were all born at the same time, they weren’t expected to survive, but they did. The girls, later known as ‘miracle babies’ were a symbol of joy, and showing that good things can happen during the Great Depression. Of course, the babies didn’t make the bad weather stop, but they did give people something to hope for: That those babies will live! All together, the babies were about 13 pounds and 5 ounces, and each one could be held in one hand!
How they survived is just as interesting as what they were. The Dionne Quintuplets were born two months premature, and not even their own father thought they would survive, but, they did. They weren't expected to live, no Quintuplets have ever survived, but miraculously, they did.
Being famous may sound fun, but in all reality, it’s bad. They became like a tourist attraction, by 1937, about 3,000 visitors had passed through the ‘Quintland’ hospital where the girls were being taken care of. They had become really famous, 4 movies were made about them, they had dolls, and they were an exhibit at the World Fair in Chicago. That’s huge!! When they wanted to play, they were out in a playground surrounded by glass walls. Outside of the glass walls there was a mesh tent type of thing, so the girls couldn't see the people, but they could still see the shadows of them. It doesn’t sound that fun, does it?
All in all, The Dionne Quintuplets suriving was amazing. Later when the Bobbi McCaughey gave birth to the world's first surviving septuplets, the Dionne’s wrote her a letter saying "We hope your children receive more respect than we did, multiple births should not be confused with entertainment, nor should they be an opportunity to sell products."
Ya, and their father also abused them when they were infants. You should read mine Tay-Tay. It is a little shorter than yours though.
Deletei never knew that 5 babies survived that nice work :)
Deleteit would be cra cra to have 4 of me. they would be like my built in besties
DeleteI think that that is very cool how you could find out all that information about them!!!! nice job
DeleteHaving 4 identical twins would be boss!!!!
DeleteTaylor i love how yours look like an essay. It's done really well.
DeleteThat's really cool how they servived and how they all look alike that's truley amazing!!
Deletewow, it must have been hard for them to be famouse ever since they were born
DeleteWhat is Dust Pneumonia And how do you get it? Dust pneumonia is an intense type of respiratory distress that can cause infection in the lung. Usually Dust pneumonia it is brought on by too much exposure to dirt and dust, most dust and dirt will pass through with the help of the cilia, cilia are tiny hares on the lung. The dust moves deep into the alveoli (little bubbles inside the lung) not letting the cilia move the dust through. This leads to infection, possible respiratory failure, and lung damage. Some symptoms of dust pneumonia are Coughing, Weezing, Fever, and Septic Shock these then it can lead to death. In conclusion dust pneumonia is very intense is passed through the lung, and can have some scary symptoms.
ReplyDeleteVery interesting facts you have.. But, If you had dust pneumonia would you die right away? How long could you survive with dust pneumonia??
Deletewow that's sad how a - lot of people died from pneumonia. I just can't imagine dying from inhaled dust.
Deleteooh Scary.
DeleteThat would have to hurt having dust and dirt fly down your throat.
DeleteWell Taylor, you would have the symtoms first then you would die, I cant imagine either.

ReplyDeleteMoving to California during the 1930’s. A lot of people went to California because they wanted to get away from the dust bowl. Also most of the people that moved to California were from Texas and from Oklahoma. A lot of people tried to race to California because they wanted to be able to get a good place to live and also so they could get good jobs. Also a lot of Americans told the story about when all of the people went to California because they could tell people how bad the storm actually was. A lot of people said that there was a lot of jobs but there was not that is why also a lot of people went because a lot of families needed money so they could live so they could get food. Also a lot of the people when they moved to California the lived in the mideast of California.

DeleteGood job explaining!! I didn't know that when people moved to California, they moved to the Mideast of California!!
DeleteSo all the people were mostly from Texas and Oklahoma, but why would other parts of the state move to california too, if they weren't the ones that were getting the dust storm problem?
DeleteWhy did they all move to California? Ya know there are 49 other states
DeleteMy topic was The Dionne Quintuplets.
ReplyDeleteFirst, Quintuplets as Infants.
The little quintuplets Yvonne, Annette, Cecile, Emilie, and Marie were all born 2 month premature. Their father Olivia-Edouard abused them and tried selling them for money. They all have Marie somewhere in their names. And they were all identical.
Second, ages and why they died or still alive.
Yvonne Edouilda Marie Dionne died of cancer on June 23, 2001, the age of 67. Annette Lillianne Marie Dionne is still alive and her birthday is in May on the 28. Cecile Marie Emilda Dionne is still alive and her birthday is on May 28. Emilie Marie Jeanne Dionne had Epileptic seizure and died on August 6, 1954 at the age 20. Marie Reine Alma Dionne had blood clots and died February 27, 1970 at the age of 35.
Last, Right now.
Annette Lillianne Marie Dionne is still alive and her Birthday is next month on May 28th and will be 80. Cecile Marie Emilda Dionne and will be 80 on the 28th of May. They live together in Ontario, Canada.
In conclusion, The Dionne Quintuplets are alive and living together or decesed from a cancer, epileptic seizure, or blood clots.
Wait, so there still living? That's so cool.
DeleteI decided to do the CCC. The organization is very interesting. So it the back story is very interesting. And the book and the movie didn't really say too many things about it.The back story. The back story is actually very interesting. The CCC was also known as Roosevelt's Tree Army. They were responsible for more than half the reforestation, they also had to be unemployed, unmarried, and between the ages of 18 and 26 to be apart of it. There were about 3 billion trees planted, just from that organization. Between 1933 and 1941, more than 3,000,000 men served in the CCC.
ReplyDeleteIn conclusion the CCC did an awesome job with helping people!
That is cool I didn't know that
Deleteyah just imagine helping people every day
DeletePretty much the CCC helped lots of people nice :)

ReplyDeleteThe dust bowl certainly was not good, even on a holiday. That was obviously a dark, and scary easter. At first the sun peaked out and people went to church and went to do some outdoor chores, but that soon ended when temperatures dropped and the sky got darker. Ed and Ada Phillips had to rush like everyone else. They had to stop at a shelter with like 10 other people there. The Dust Storm on that Sunday was the last major storm. Just imagine crawling to your doorstep or driving in just black, all you had at the time was headlights on their vehicles. It became clear that their nightmare had came to life.
I think that you did a real good job on explanig that
DeleteThe kidnapping of Charles A. Lindbergh Jr. was a big event to have happened in the early 1930’s. The child was gone at about 9 P.M. on March 1, 1932. The first place they searched was the nursery he was kidnapped in. During the search of the scene, traces of mud were found on the floor of the nursery. They later found un-measurable footprints by the window. The ladder the kidnapper used was broken on the first section either going up, or going down it. During the search for Charles Lindbergh Jr., ransom notes were found. In all, there were a total of 13 notes found. The first ransom note found demanded $50,000. another ransom note that was found said that the kidnapping had been planned for over a year. The body was actually accidentally found by William Allen, 45 feet away from the highway, four and a half feet from the Lindbergh home. The body was half-buried, badly decomposed, and had a hole in the back of the head. The body was identified as Charles Lindbergh Jr., and was later cremated. To conclude, this kidnapping was a large event in the 1930’s.
ReplyDeletethat is cool bro
DeleteMany amazing things were in the dust bowl and not the good amazing an example is “Black Sunday”.First of all is the start of Easter Sunday. It was a nice and sunny day.Familys went on a picnic and car rides. They said the “Dust Gods” put all the evil behind and put the good stuff ahead .Secondly is when the dust came. The sun and dust went away. They said that it was the worst storm ever kind of like a twister. The “Twister” gathered mountants of electricity. Finally is Black Sunday.Unlike the normal sand this sand blew super fast in canada the dust was up to 8,000 feet in the air.It all started at 4:20 p.m when the sun went away and the clouds started rolling in.In conclusion the Easter Sunday was a disaster but we still rember it today.
ReplyDeleteMany of people thought that the quints were for surely going to die. No one thought they were going to live. They spent their first couple of days in a basket with heating blankets and they were massaged gently with olive oil every now and then. On the first day they were fed warm water and corn syrup and on the second they were fed cow’s milk, hot water, corn syrup, and a few drops of rum to keep their airways open. The survived long enough that their parents needed help from a premature doctor in Chicago. Even though they were cute the five girls had the weight of just about everyone’s doubts on their backs.
ReplyDeleteFirst of all those pretty little girls survived and were placed on just about every advertisement. Spanning from Quaker oats, Alexander Dolls, Beehive corn Syrup, and Carnation Evaporated milk. Even though the girls refused to drink the stuff, Carnation claimed that they drank over 2,500 tins of the milk. During the time that they grew up their father decided to sign them over to a world fair exhibit in Chicago. After this occurred The government decided that they had unfit parent s and removed them from their home. Shortly after being removed the government created Quintland. As they grew up three of the girls got married and two of them got divorced. Sadly three of the five girls died. Marie at died home from a blood clot while she was at home (age 35), Emilie from an epileptic seizure (age 20), and Yvonne at age 67 from cancer. To sum it up the Dionne Quintuplets had some problems with growing up as a rare “attraction”.
