  1. On October 14th, 2017 in Wisconsin there was a family on a roadtrip. Collin Neitzel, Mari Neitzel, Toni Neitzel, and Chris Neitzel wear making their way to Hayward, Wisconsin to close up the summer home that they had owned.
While driving two hours in they crossed the deep ragged trench made for a highway to go straight through it.
The family also saw a random dog around the three hour point of the trip. It was a small Beagle with a collar and no where to go as it was quite literally in the middle of nowhere. With no home in sight the family drove by the dog normally until the daughter of Toni and Chris, Mari Neitzel, noticed that there was a lost puppy.
The mom and dad tried to ensure that it was just on a hunting trip with it’s owner but Mari wouldn’t believe them and started screaming until the poor puppy was out of sight and mind. The puppy was never to be seen again.

  2. A Drama Filled Dance

The last period of the day had just ended at Bartels Middle School and students were very eager to leave. Not only was it Friday, but the dance was also later that evening. Many questions rushed through the students heads. Would their crush ask them to dance? Would friendships be ruined? Would tears be shed?

At six o’clock students are let into the school where they are herded like elephants into the gym. Where some students will actually dance, while other might just chat with their friends. All goes okay until they play the slow sappy songs. While these songs are being played you can find most kids in the gym, waiting the awkwardness out. Or groups of girls in tears while their friends frantically try to calm them down but fail miserably. Are all middle school dances this filled with drama?

  3. One Friday morning in the beginning of the 2016 school year, the 7th grade class were on their way to what they didn’t know would end being a cry fest, the Courage Retreat.

This event is an annual event that takes place at Portage High School.

At the Courage Retreat you do many fun activities that allow you to get to know your class very well.

As soon as that comes to an end it’s fun and games anymore!

It’s time for “Pebble in The Pond” during “Pebble in the Pond” everyone gets the chance to go to the middle, place a pebble in the bowl of water, and share some type of experience they have had with bullying and other situations.

By the end of the day they were a much closer class with a better understanding of each other.

  4. Graphic Novel Trouble

Today, W witnessed a specacular event! In English hour 6, the BMS principal walked into the room and handed the English teacher a piece of paper. It was something that every 8th grade student need to be informed of according to our principal. Graphic novels are now banned!!!!

Due to a recent study, resolving that kids who read graphic novels score less, the school administrators have concluded to abolish graphic novels! This caused uproar in the class because our English teacher and most of the students for fans of graphic novels. Some students even masterminded a secret black market for these books.

On the other hand, a couple people in my class including a friend of mine weren’t opposed to the issue, but most people in the class were practically in revolution. Despite all of this, our class will be disposing of graphic novels for the time being and possibly even forever. Graphic novels might be a thing of the past.

  5. It’s just another normal day in 2017 for San Franciso. The same old people walking up and down the streets in the subways. Even for the street performers. Sometimes they will perform just so that everyone can hear. But sometimes they’ll be trying to ear some money. They might not be poor and the might not be rich. Some are willing to brace all kinds of weather to do their performances.

You might walk past then every single day and not notice. Or maybe you do. Maybe you do see them and throw a couple coins in. Or a dollar. Maybe even a couple dollars. Either way you might have just made someone’s day. Even if they weren’t playing for money. Because you’ve acknowledged them and appreciated them and what they do.

Now whenever you walk by these skilled and resplendent people, check and see if you have any spare change on you.

  6. It was a typical Tuesday in 8th hour study hall. Alli and Faith were in the Little Theater working on their health assignment which was due on Thursday. They were writing a parody on stress.

Then, they tragically realized they needed THREE stress projects, not just one! And, it was due in TWO days! They frantically called each other and worked endlessly trying to complete their health stuff.

Late into the night, they worked. Finally, they came to a conclusion. They would do two stress poems and a stress survey. They somehow managed to complete it on time, but their grade is yet to be determined.

  7. Graphic Novels: To Be or Not to Be
    By: Ella Briggs
On a clear Tuesday afternoon, students of the BMS 6th hour accelerated english class were infuriated. News had just been given that the state of Wisconsin will be preventing all handlers of graphic novels, whether it be teachers or students, from having them. The reasons for this new development are still undetermined.

After hearing this, the students immediately took a stand. The ideas for a protest started flying in. One student suggested a violent idea of stopping this, but that ideas was quickly shot down. After that, she also suggested keeping the novels in secret self-made compartments to hide the books from authorities.

Following this, Ms. DeVries, the teacher of this class, sent out an email saying that most of her students were very upset with these occurrences, but a majority were willing to protest against it.

The students continue to protest against this. They wave those novels in the air like they just don’t care.

  9. Lapacek’s Near Cat Theft
    --------------------------------------
It was on October 6th that a girl, and her mother, went to Lapacek’s Apple Orchard. The day was rather dreary, which meant there was no one else there, besides the numerous cats owned by the owners.

While her mother went inside to purchase the apple cider that they came for, her daughter began the task of collecting cats. And when her mother returned, she was sitting on a bench surrounded by four different cats.

There were many suggestions of cat theft as her mother attempted dragging her to the car. To appease the girl, she suggested asking owners to see if they could adopt one of the cats. Neither one of them felt comfortable with questioning them, so she called her father.

The girl pleaded with him to call the owners to ask for them. And after he called them and found out that the answer was no, she and her mother presumed that the owners would of known who sent him to call them. It was under that assumption that the socially inept duo will never feel at ease going back to face the Lapacek’s again.

  10. Wait, Is This The Hiding One?

Thirty students were sitting in their seats for an anonymous teacher’s sixth hour english class, listening to her informing them about a book. Then, an announcement rang over the loudspeaker, “Attention students and staff, at this time we are in a non-emergency lockdown.”

Thirty pairs of eyes darted to the fabulous teacher, who looked deep in thought. Finally, she exclaimed, “Is this the hiding one?”

In spite of being in a hypothetical emergency, the eighth grade students were unable to stifle their laughs. After a lively debate in which the students determined that their teacher was correct, they along with their teacher slumped out of their desks, trudged behind her bookshelves, and crouched to take cover. It was as quiet as a mouse. No one dared to breathe.

After a while, the silence was suddenly broken by the principal’s voice over the intercom, “As of now, the lockdown is over.”

Sighs of relief went through the little crowd, and the students gratefully headed back to their seats. Although there was a lot of tension, the students in that fateful english class will forever remember their amazing teacher asking, “Is this the hiding one?”

  11. A couple days ago, during sixth hour at Bartels Middle School, the principal came on the loudspeaker and said “We are now going into a non-emergency lock down.”

Ms. DeVries said “Wait, is this the hiding one?” Nobody was really sure so the whole class went and crammed into the corner of the room and hid.

Ms.DeVries was looking through her emergency packet and found out that they did the right thing. Some time went by and they were all still sitting there waiting for the principal to come back and say they can go back to class but it never happened.

In the end, they found out that they did the wrong thing because the principal said the wrong thing. Apparently, we were not supposed to do “The hiding one” after all.

In one of the games the clock counting down to half time, number ten from portage was coming down the court. The ball was bouncing up and down. With little time left on the clock she pulled up outside of the three point line and shot.

Then the buzzer went off. A second went by everything was absolutely silent.

Next, swish the ball went in the hoop. The gym erupted everyone was screaming. She had made a three pointer to end the half and tack on a few more points for her team.

They might have lost that game in the end. However you can't deny the excitement that went through the gym at half time.

Mrs. Oh quickly turns to Mr. Oh and says “That is paperboard it is not recyclable”. Then Mr. Oh looking shocked says “ Cardboard is always recyclable,” and points at the recycling. Mrs. Oh glares at him and then proceeds to look it up on the Portage Recycling website. Then she states “ Anything that looks like cardboard containing packaged food is called paperboard and it can not be recycled “. In the end Mr. Oh learns that paperboard is not recyclable and ends up digging it out of the recycling bin.

He went on and hours passed of work, by the end he was freezing and he finally finished and headed to the door but it was froze shut. Almost half an hour passed and he finally realized his neighbors had a spare set of keys for him to use.

By the end of the day once he warmed up he finally realized that he should have thought all of this through way before he did then. In conclusion using your brain can be the difference of life and death.

  15. A Cold Snowy Day
    By: Lauren Hein

On one cold, cloudy, snowy winter day the students of Bartels Middle School were antsy. There was going to be a big snow storm blowing over southern Wisconsin. All morning many of the students were talking about it. Hoping for what seemed the impossible to happen.

During 7th grade lunch Mr. Meicher the former principal’s voice took grip of the school. There was a moment of silence throughout the whole school. “ Due to the incoming snow storm and current road conditions students and teachers will be released from their classes at 12:45. Thank you!

There was a roar from the former 7th graders. From then on everyone was extremely impatient for 12:45. It was less than one hour before the Mr. Meicher’s voice came onto the loud speaker for the second time of the day.

“You are now dismissed from your classes.” All the students rushed into the hallways. A sea of students. In less than 5 minutes all of the students rushed out of the building to the outside. All of the students rushed to the buses and their homes.

  16. It was the beginning of October, which meant that it was time for the Bartels Middle School’s traditional Courage Retreat for the seventh graders. The class of 2022 wasn’t quite sure whether to be excited for it or not, because the eighth graders were telling them that it would be complete misery, but the teachers were telling them that it would be a blast.

So there they were, on the floor of the high school’s gymnasium, sitting with their friends. The speakers introduced themselves, and then they launched into a few things that included making yourself look a little weird. After that, they were separated into groups randomly. They did various activities that demonstrated or built courage, and a few random games until lunch.

After lunch, things stopped being so happy. One of the speakers told a sad story about when they had betrayed their friend so that she could be more popular. After that, they put out a bowl of water and some pebbles in the middle of the circle they had the kids make.

The people told them that the pebbles made waves in the water when they dropped them in it. The pebbles represented the things everyone says and does to others, and the ripples represented how it spreads out and affects people. Then they told them that if they wanted, they could come up and drop a pebble in the bowl. Then they were supposed to say what they were going to change about themselves or what they would do to show courage and why. This is why things got sniffly.

So on the way home they all promised each other with lots of hugs and snot that they would be better people. That lasted about one day.

  17. It was a dreary October morning, when something horrific occurred, a teacher ignored her student’s raised hand. At Bartels Middle School, in Portage, Wisconsin, a young girl had a question. She raised her hand and waited for the teacher to come. The girl held it up for ten minutes at least.

In the time she was waiting, the teacher went to every other person who had their hand up (and some who didn’t), answered their questions, looked right at the girl, and walked to the front of the room explaining the next part of the assignment.

After she was finally done talking, the girl re-raised her hand and waited very patiently and sort of quietly. This time the teacher proceeded to go to every other table and asked if they had any questions.

When she finally got to the girl’s table the teacher asks, “Do you have any questions?”. The girl wanted to say “No, I’ve just been raising my hand for ten minutes for fun.”, but she held herself back and asked her question. Even then the teacher just gave her some stupid answer.

The girl was very irked and like potassium and water, the two still don’t get along.

  18. California, its land and its people, have been devastated by 16 wildfires in just over a week. Firefighters staff are also overwhelmed. They have been working non-stop, trying to control the fires and prevent further damage.

Some of the worst fires in the stateś history have burned more than 213,000 acres, leveled 5,700 homes, and killed at least 41 people. The fires have burned in nearly 14 counties all over California. All of this has happened since October 9th. The reasons the fires have been so perilous include years of drought and the spark has been faneed because of the Diablo Winds..

The brave men and women pushing back against the flames are truly heroes. They have faced winds exceeding 70 mph over a vast terrain, Many of the firefighters and other personnel have not slept much in days. Sleep deprived, one one man hauling thousands of gallons of water, to help in the fight, rolled his truck and died.

California is under siege. Wildfires are devastating homes, businesses, and lives including those of rescuers. The devastation of this fire season has been exceptional. Residents now face the remainder of the fires and the long road ahead to rebuild their lives.

  19. "Is This the Hiding One?"
    by: Macy Goldthorpe

A medical emergency recently caused a hold at Bartel Middle School. Most classes just shut their doors and went on with their lesson. One class however, was an exception.

The confusion began when the PA system clicked on and an announcement was made, “We are now in a non-emergency lockdown.”

Everyone looked around the classroom, trying to figure out what was going on. “Wait, is this the hiding one?” asked the teacher, as she picked up the thick orange informational book about holds and lockdowns. The class started discussing what they were supposed to do.

A lockdown usually means that students are supposed to go to the safe wall and be absolutely silent. A hold means that teachers should shut the door and continue teaching, but there’s no such thing as a non-emergency lockdown.

Better safe than sorry seemed to be the consensus because the class piled in behind the bookshelves. After about ten minutes, the students came out, and it was announced that the hold was over.

The class soon realized that it had not been “the hiding one,” but they won’t let their teacher forget it anytime soon.

It’s one of the Badger’s most important games of the year. It’s against Nebraska. This year it would be played in Lincoln, Nebraska.

On a huge stage, freshman running back Johnathan Taylor would silence the crowd with a 249 yard rushing performance.

October 7th, 2017 was a day Taylor will remember for a long time. Thanks to Taylor’s performance he helped the Badgers win pretty convincingly. Wisconsin had great blocking which helped Taylor along with his speed. Taylor would cut from side to side, or he would power through defenders for extra yards. He seemed to be unstoppable.

Badger fans are excited because of Taylor and can’t wait to see him again and for years to come.

  21. The choir class on Oct. 13th 2017 was definitely an unusual one! First, they did vocal warm ups, which was normal, which the class did every day except for that day they sang, “Don’t Stop Believing” and ,“Lean On Me” also.

Then the class took a depressing turn as everyone was reminded of the fact that earlier that month they learned one of the girls was moving to Illinois. So, while half of the class was sobbing and the other half was trying to keep the tears in, the director was saying, “ Stop crying or I will start crying too!” They sang songs, laughed, but mostly just cried as they remembered the times that they have all shared. At the end of the class, the director set aside 5 minutes for everyone to cry and hug each other.

Whether you were friends with her or not, that class definitely pulled on your heartstrings.

  22. The Courage Retreat

It was Friday, November 4th of 2016. All of the seventh graders from Bartels Middle School were preparing for the for the Courage Retreat.

When they got to school everyone went to their homerooms to get t-shirts, and then headed to the cafeteria. There they separated into groups and began to walk to the high school. As they stepped out into the cool fall air, everyone wondered what it would be like, fun, boring, sad?

Once they got to the High School gym they meet the counselors and played some group games and activities. In almost no time it was lunch, everyone ate with their groups, not knowing what was going to happen next.

Then, everyone gathered around in a circle for the most important part of the event. Anyone who wanted could go to the middle and talk about something that had happened to them, or something they had done during their school careers.

As people went up it became very emotional, and most of the class was crying by the end. When they left, with wet eyes, everyone knew that something very special had happened. Hopefully, they would continue to remember this and help make the school a better place.

  24. A Hormone Filled Evening

One a cloudy afternoon, the students of Bartels Middle School got let out of school at 3:15 pm on the 13th of October, 2017. Joy was in the atmosphere for the entire day because of the dance that night. Would someone dance with their crush? WOuld someone try to suck the fun out of everyone? Would waterworks fall?

First of all, when the clock hit 5:45 pm many people showed up at the door and all HOSA members went inside to set up. After a little bit of talking, people started to set up everything such as the tables, soda machine, and baked goods. Second, all HOSA members paid to get in and get stamped on the hand to show that they paid. After that, people unlocked the doors and everyone outside started to cram into the lobby. It was going to be a rough night.

The teens were hanging out in the gym and cafeteria when suddenly music started playing and bright, colorful light beams scattered the gym. First of all, people started to stream into the gym and started to get down and boogie with friends. Second of all, people started to form a long line in front of the concessions and being crazy middle school started buy food and waste all of their money right away. Lastly, the slow dance started and many tears started to fall. It was complete chaos and it was all very ludicrous.

For the rest of the night it was all a big, hot mess. That’s how everyone rolls at middle school dances. Many people bawled because of their boyfriends not dancing with them and going to dance with somebody else. Come on people it’s pretty ridiculous for this to happen. This isn’t prom live your childhood out and have fun. Overall, the Bartels Middle School Dance of October was a complete bust.

  25. Pencils Can Die Too

The night of October 9th. A quiet, average night in the Schnitzel household. Our victim was drawing and listening to music at the kitchen table while her parent made dinner. Things were great. For a while. Until something nobody was expecting happened: the death of someone so important, so integral to this family, that nothing would ever be the same again.

When an unnamed doofus was lighting a candle, she didn’t expect the match to flare up, or for her to drop it into the candle. She didn’t expect it either when she tried using a pencil to get the match out and it caught fire. And she definitely didn’t expect it to smell so bad.

When she threw the pencil into the sink and turned on the water, she still had hope as steam and smoke poured from the pencil. That hope was soon dashed. The pencil-her favorite pencil- was melted beyond repair, or even recognition. The girl was heartbroken.

Her favoritist most bestest most wonderful drawing pencil... destroyed. Adios, beloved drawing utensil. We’ll pour one out for you.

  26. No matter where you looked, tears were stained on the cheeks of young seventh graders. They sat in the Portage High School’s gymnasium. Students with past experiences of being bullied or had bullied others shared their sorrows. After more and more students spoke, the more children that had tears on their faces. The somewhat dark room was slightly illuminated by the soft glow of hidden lights. The room was silent, and after each person spoke, it seemed to become quieter. The Courage Retreat was an emotional time for the seventh graders of Bartels Middle School that year.

  27. Laughter permeates the room, while the mouth-watering aroma of burritos, quesadillas, and a variety of other Hispanic platters fill the air as the Portage Eighth Grade Black Volleyball Team feasts on authentic dishes of the Latin culture.

The young ladies proposed the plan to hold the team dinner after they were informed that their practice was to be cancelled that Friday. Players agreed that it would be the perfect opportunity to bond and get to know their teammates they weren’t too familiar with. They also wished to eliminate the negativity recently circulating among the ladies, caused by players not getting along with each other at games and practices. Many players believed that the event seemed to have changed how they function as a team and as friends. They were way more supportive of each other after that Friday.

Neither coaches nor parents were involved in the scheme at all, believe it or not. It was all planned and carried out by the teammates themselves. Who ever said you can’t eat your problems away?

  28. On October 7, 2017 Madi, Anna, Jess and Mike went to the movie theater to see IT. While they were there, around 5:00 the tornado siren went off. Since they were watching a scary movie they thought that it was just a part of it.

After the movie Anna checked her phone and saw that her father had texted her during the movie. He said that the weather was going to be bad. Anna showed Madi the message and together they looked up the weather, it said that there was a tornado warning for Portage.

They were both pretty spooked. They told Jess and Mike what they saw and Jess decided to call Matt considering the fact that an announcement would have come over his pager if it was real. Matt told them that the siren really had gone off. Anna and Madi found it very funny that they were just casually watching a movie while their was a tornado siren going off outside.

It was a Wednesday right before sixth hour english class. Riley was frantically looking for her writer's notebook that she wrote all of her assignments in for english class. It was nowhere to be seen in her locker so she assumed she had left it at her house.

All through english class she was paranoid about her writer's notebook being missing. She was trying to decide what she would do if she couldn’t find it. She decided she would have to rewrite everything she's written before.

When she got home from school she spent a very long time looking for her notebook, but it was nowhere to be found. She had math homework that was due the next day so she decided to deal with it the next day.

When she got to school the next day she looked in all of her classes and it was nowhere to be found. She had an article she had written about the first middle school dance that was due as a homework assignment. She decided to write it down in a different notebook so that she wouldn’t get a bad grade.

When she got to English class she felt relieved because she thought she had all of her work done. Then all of the sudden her teacher announced that you couldn’t do an article that had too much drama in it. This meant that she had to write a new article. When she finished the article that took forever to write she a very relieved and ready to go on with her day.

  30. Late Friday Night there was a clown sighting. However it wasn't just Friday, it was Friday the 13th. Friday the 13th is known as an unlucky day, and it was for these 15 teenagers. They were all at their friend's house minding their own business, and just eating pizza. Just then, the power went out. These teenagers were confused so they went up stairs to check it out. When they went upstairs they saw strobe lights. All of a sudden, a clown came out of the closet. Everyone was scared and they threw their pizza at the clown! The clown, IT was roaming around the house for a long time. Suddenly IT ran outside. The girls thought they were safe, so they went to open the door to see if he left. Right when one of the girl's hand was on the door handle, a white pale face started creeping up by the window of the door. Everyone ran downstairs as fast as they could.
Later that night, they went outside to play hide and seek in the yard. By this time it was midnight. As soon as they went outside they were greeted by HIM. The clown. IT. One of the girls got so close to him, she slapped him, right in his face. Then she ran away terror stricken.
Eventually, the whole clown thing wore away. The girls later on found out it was the friends uncle. However the neighbors must have been watching and decided to prank the 15 teenagers. The neighbors made a sound that sounded like the laugh of a witch. All the girls freaked out.
Finally, the girls went to bed, knowing it was all a prank.
