  1. On Tuesday, October 3rd, 2017, all Wisconsin schools were forced to hand over their graphic novels. “From Diary of a Wimpy Kid” to “Drama”. All of them. At approximately 9:42 AM, teachers got a note from the principal telling them to put all graphic novels away. The government found evidence that it was not educating students. They threatened to take away teaching licenses, jobs even if they didn’t take effective immediately and remove all graphic novels from their classrooms. English teachers were astonished. Kids who read graphic novels were furious. Other witnesses tried to take action, they tried to hide their graphic novels so that teachers would not take them away. This may be the end of all graphic novelists. Will Wisconsinites corrupt? By: Lola Boyce

  2. On Friday October 6th, many families attended a high school football game held at Markesan Middle/High School football field. It was a rainy night, so everyone who came was in rain jackets and sweatshirts. It was ¨Parents Night”, all of the players and their parents walked out onto the field and were thanked for all of their participation.
It was Markesan Hornets against Roush Hornets. Immediately when the game started, Markesan had already scored a touchdown. During the game, the quarterback of Markesan ran the entire field and scored a touchdown without getting tackled. It was impressive.
During halftime, the marching band preformed a series of songs including their school song. But, the 5th and 6th graders got to play a very short game of flag football on the field for the end of their season. SInce, they had to play in the rain, many of them kept falling which was really funny.
At the end of the high school game, Markesan ended up winning by a lot. The score was 42-14. Everyone was really happy they had one the game.

  3. In mid November, the wonderful 7th grades of Bartels Middle School went to the Portage High School for a Courage Retreat, it is a activity where they work as a team and a grade for kindness, and courage. At first they got bright colored t- shirts that says kind and encouraging words, They learned how to be kind to other even if they were different than them, they also learned to take risks. They played many games like “ what is your special talent” they learned about a lot of different talents, and listen to fun energetic music also.

The 7th graders made a big circle at the end of the day with a big fish bowl in the middle with some colorful pebbles, and rocks. Someone would go in the middle drop a pebble and talked to them about what they want to do to be kind, or they shared how they got bullied, or even different things. It was ok to cry and let your feelings out, it was a very sad moment for the 7th graders. It was really brave to get up there and speak.

  5. It was in the summer of 2017. Hayden went fishing with his to good buddies Isaac, and Ethan.

They went to silver lake in Portage Wisconsin. It's not a bad bass lake.

Ethan was a good fisherman and Isaac I’ll say it was his first time, but Isaac casted into almost every snag you could get into. He had one great cast though. It was in between two trees with only a one inch spot to place it. Hayden felt bad for Ethan because he helped Isaac so many times he couldn't get his pole in the water.

That day Hayden caught 3, Chad caught 5, and Ethan and Isaac caught nothing.

It was a good brisk day for Hayden, Isaac, and Ethan to fish and have fun

  6. Mid September 2017, Mrs.Karpelenias class Made mini cardboard model rockets, to launch for a experiment, would a rocket with two, three, or four wings fly the highest.
One Rocket Called “Blue Dino” Flew only a few feet off the ground before the engine exploded, other rockets also Experienced Some Difficulties like, Not launching at all, Parachute not opening, And exploding in mid air!
Other Rockets Flew high with no problems at all, Three rockets tied for first place going more than 30ft. High! The experiment Proved that Rockets with 3 fins would go the highest.

  7. It was a regular day in October. The dogs were barking, Deer were running and squirrel were eating. Then out of nowhere the State of Wisconsin sent a letter to all the schools that banned graphic novel. With the threat of not listening teachers would end up losing their jobs! Everyone was infuriated! Kids were hiding there book, freaking out. People thought it was fake. The State of Wisconsin said that reading graphic novels was making kids dumber. Which was kind of weird because the year before a teacher named Ms. DeVries did a paper on graphic novels and the result said it was making kids smarter.
I do not know what to think of this. I guess if it’s making kids dumber then we have to go with it. What do you think about this horrible tragedy? Do you believe it? Lets just hope it's fake so kids read what they want to read.

  8. News Article

In mid-December, students at Bartels Middle School have a huge event coming up. Students that don’t have an F or 3 to 4 honor level can pick to either go bowling at Thunderbird Lanes (in Baraboo, WI) or tubing at Christmas Mountain (in Wisconsin Dells, WI). While the students that had an F, would be assigned to a classroom all day and treat it as a study hall to get up there grade. This reporter was in the area and decided to go to Thunderbird Lanes. Every group got to play at at most 2 games. Also if the students brought money they can buy drinks and food.

This reporter saw that some groups were missing a few members. She quickly found out that some students were in the arcade. Most of them were playing the crane machine game. About ¾ of the time went by and most people decided to leave their game to go play arcade games. While the others still bowling had to bowl for them. Some groups got mad at their group members while others didn’t mind.

At the end of the day, this reporter saw that at the arcade games were almost entirely EMPTY. Every student got at least one arcade game prize even if they didn’t play. Most students said that it was fun and they would do it again next year.

  9. It was almost time for volleyball practice to end on a late Thursday afternoon, when Coach Fritz had to announce something. Practice for the next day was canceled. This was because the Coach had to get a new car that day.
The girls were excited, and wanted to do something as a team the next day in place of practice. Eventually, they decided on walking to Culver's for dinner the next day after school.
The next day, all of the girls that wished to join the team for dinner, met in the Bartels Middle School lobby. Soon after, they walked to the Culver’s together.
One they got there, they realized that not as many people showed up as expected, which the girls were kind of disappointed about. They also did not sit as a team, but rather in small groups around the restaurant. You could say that the dinner did not go as they had planned.
Think about this. Are there some decisions that could have been made to make this experience better? Was this the good team bonding opportunity that they wanted?

  10. The Perfect Shot!

It was a cold rainy morning, and a father and his daughter took a short drive from Portage W.I.S to Stevens point W.I.S, for a hunting trip and the fathers dads land.
They sat in the stand for 5 hours that morning and saw nothing. But since it was raining they didn't expect to see anything anyways. They went back inside and filled their time till 4 and went back out. When they were watching the daughter had fallen asleep. But was awaken to her dad spotting a buck, the daughter slowly raised the 30-06, when she finally found the perfect shot to slowly pulled the trigger and !Bam! the spiker buck dropped on the spot talk about a perfect shot! But when the buck went down they saw a young adult buck ran but it was old enough to survive on its own. The daughter became sad for a little while because this was the first deer she had killed.
They climbed out of the stand and her cousin Nick, Grandpa Jerry, her father, and of course Myah her little teddy bear puppy followed behind her to the small clearing in the woods where it dropped on the spot. They started gutting right away, but by the time they started the rain had started and it started to pour and it poured hard. They were soaked when they finished gutting it was now 6:30 time all hunting ends for the day.
Do you think the short drive to stevens point was worth it? Do you think the daughter was successful?

  11. Mr Reeth delivers some shocking new that affects almost half of the class and made some people try to rebel from the new rule.
9:40 ms devries class was having a normal day a new mini lesson and there was a knock at the and the principal comes in and gives a note to ms devries and she reads to herself with confusion and reads to the class
¨All graphic novels are now banned because they are showing less test scores to students that reads them and all people who don’t comply will be dealt with higher authority.¨
Students were saddened a student who´s name was kaden tried to hide his book but then someone snitched on him and he had to give in up
Some people had accused mr Reeth and ms devries of plotting to do this but they had denied this accusation.
The teacher now shocked had to start to plot how to protest this new rule because the year before she had researched this topic and found that graphic novel readers had better test scores than the people who didn't read one
Then a student had said that a fellow classmate had said before this class that ozias gayton had said this was all a lie and then the teacher started to redden up and confess that it was all a lie and have the books back so the students out smarted the students.

  12. Portage Ends on a Great Note
    Jack Callen 10/19/2017

The 8th grade football team traveled to Sun Prairie for their final game of the season. Portage lost two games before (3-2) and they were desperate for a win.
If began pouring rain at 5:30 in Central Wisconsin, and the temperature dropped to a whopping 49 degrees. But all of the kids had a great passion for football and would not let that stop them. Portage, opened their drive to a touchdown. Junior Bazauldua #31 zoomed into the endzone with his blockers ahead straight into the endzone. The Portage defense dominated and before long the rain picked up even harder. A 15 minute delay occurred when a Sun Prairie player had to be taken into the ambulance.
The Warriors and Cardinals stretched their legs and hustled back to the field. #31 scored yet another touchdown right before the half. Daylight was burning and the two teams needed to switch to Ashley Field the high school football field near by.
Portage dominated the second half and did not let Sun Prairie score another point. Hibner, Starr, Kikkert, Roberts, Bleich and Bazualdua ran the ball phenomally. The end result was 26-0.
Atlast the Warriors pulled it off, a great game it was. The last game before high school football a brand new experience. The young Warriors celebrated their win by pouring water on their coaches.

  13. It’s mid September, on a sunny fall day. It nearly sixty five degrees. So early still, that the grass of the football field behind Bartels Middle School is wet. Teams are launching rockets into the sky today.

Classes have spent nearly a week building these designed rockets, with teammates that were picked by one another. They are excited to finally launch them. They have kids measuring from two different spots. One from forty meters away, and one from fifty meters away. Some rockets go pretty high, but come down fairly quick like a bullet. Other rockets fly high, but have a really long hang time. Some of these rockets even land on the school roof, some land across the road in the streets that lead to the high school, or some didn’t fly at all because of mess ups made in the building process or a failed engine.

Over all I think this was a great learning and a very fun experience. We learned how to make rockets. We used team work to make the rockets work. Also, we did this as a science project helping us learn about rocket science.

  14. Rocket Launch

It was an early breezy morning on a mid-September day and it was kind of cold, but that didn’t stop the science class. The science class was going outside at Bartels Middle School to do a Science rocket launch. They were trying to figure out how high the rocket could fly.

They had a crowd outside, probably about 60 kids and they were cheering loud and proud for the rockets to fly high. Mrs.Karpelenia’s class and Ms. Maratiks class were both outside and they had a system going; a group from Ms.Maratiks would go then a group from Mrs. Karpelenias would go. Everyone's rocket was flying high without a doubt, and they all just shot like a shooting star straight into the sky. Then it was a different groups turn. That group stepped up to the launch pad, and handed Ms. Maratik their rocket named “DT” and she was setting it up while the group was getting ready to press the buttons. It was time, the rocket was ready. Then everyone started to count down, the teachers, the students, the crowd, all started yelling 3,2,1! Then the group pressed the buttons! Nothing happened, so they switched out the engines and tried it again, 3,2,1! Nothing happened again! That was their last chance and the teachers wouldn’t let them do it again.

They all felt sad and disappointed because all they wanted to do was see their rocket Launch, high in the sky.

  15. During the middle of september, 2017 the students of bartels middle school were outside ready to launch rockets into the air.It was the start of the school year and they were only about three weeks into the school year.It had been some time since the students have been outside on there old school playground. Some were happy to launch the rockets others wanted to go back to bed.
The school allowed all 8th graders to launch rockets, some 6th grade students even got to watch. The 8th graders got to build the rocket, making every rocket different.
There were multiple rockets launched during that time and even more later that day, some rockets did not work. Some launched and others blew up in the air. One thing was for certain, the classes grades were sky high.

  17. Sophia breneman was sitting in first hour German when all of a sudden her left eye lid started to feel like is was down lower than her right eye lid. She just shook it off and told herself “It’s probably just nothing.” But it wasn't just nothing. Then she went to second hour science with Mrs. Karpelenia. She sat down in her desk and started doing her bellwork when all of a sudden her left eye was seeing blue orbs and her stomach felt weird. So she turned around and started talking to Mara K. and Mara said “You should probably go to the office and go home.” Then Sophia told her she would wait and see if it got andy better.

When Sophia was doing her Wonky Walk data columns she lost all vision in her left eye like everything just went white. She turned around and asked Mara if her eyes were open and Mara told her they were open. So she told Mara she could not see out of her left eye at all. So Mara told her she would walk her to the nurse's office and Sophia agreed. So they went up to Mrs. Karpelenia and told her what happened and she said that they were to go right to the office because it could be something serious. So Mara walked Sophia to the office and luckily they nurse had just got there so she took Sophia back to her office and did some tests on her and told her she needed to call her mom. So the nurse called her mom and told her the problem and said that she needed to go to the hospital for an emergency optometrist appointment.

So Sophia’s mom called her dad who had off that day and he was on his way to pick her up. So she was on her way to get her stuff and the office people asked her if she needed help and she politely said “no thanks I got this.” So she was on her way half blind but still on her way. She managed to put her chromebook away then she got to her locker and managed to unlock it and get her stuff. She then went to the office and waited then her dad texted her and said he was outside so she signed out and left.

Her dad then took her to her mom's work and her mom took her to her emergency optometrist appointment. They checked her eyes and told her that that is just her sign before she gets a migraine. They had to dilate her eyes so she couldn't go back to school. On the way home she got the migraine and She was in a lot of pain. She eventually got over it.

  18. A couple of weeks ago a kid named Ethan and his friend Braden went on a fishing trip on Swan Lake in Pardeeville. They went out on a canoe and a kayak. But they did have a tough time. They just went for a good time and to catch some fish.

Next, They said that they were fishing for around 7 hours straight. However, they had a lot of fun. All they wanted was to catch fish. However, they only caught 3 fish and all of them were bass and Braden caught 2 and Ethan caught 1. But they had a blast, but on that day they went fishing it rained really bad and was very windy. So they had a difficult time maneuvering and were always getting pushed around by the wind. It was also kind of dangerous because it started storming and it was so windy so the water was coming over the boat!

In conclusion, they had a blast on their fishing trip. Even though they didn't catch to many fish. They still had a great time on the lake…

  19. Baraboo Beats Portage 8th Grade Football For The First Time In A While
Baraboo Beats Portage, on the date 10-3-17. This game took place @Bob Mael Field, in Portage.
Baraboo vs. Portage. Over the years past, Portage has always mopped up on Baraboo, but Baraboo before the game had said that this was the game that they were out for. Baraboo was out for Warrior blood that night. Portage started out good in the game, using the run game to make it into scoring position. Then a turnover occurred, and then it started to get pretty ugly for Portage. Baraboo then started mopping up on one of their rivals for the first time in a while! The final score was 36-0. Baraboo got their Warrior blood for that night. Both teams fought hard, but Baraboo took the win this time.
Portage will look for a comeback next year when these two teams play again. Portage says that they expect to win against Baraboo next time these two teams meet.

  20. It was something every seventh grader had to do,They had told the students that they would cry and people did cry, people started to bet money sodas anything a teacher was willing to bet that they would not cry people didn’t understand how important this was they just thought of it as a field trip to the High school yay but soon that would change.

When they got to the high school things weren’t sad they were weird Slow dancing,Telling people they were beautiful and even admitting if we had a crush on someone we were all just weirded out by that but no one yet comprehended what was going to happen until it happened.

They told us all to gather up in a circle and they turned off the lights we all knew this was the moment the teachers were talking about. They then brought this bowl filled with water to the center of the room and if we wanted to say something to go up there and speak. At first it was strange no one moved we all just sat in a circle looking around us awkwardly. Finally someone got up and that’s when it all started people started going up quicker admitting to being bullied, Bullying or admitting to bad things they’ve done people went up and said or did things that you would never expect everyone who wanted to say something went up there and spoke and then it ended it was silent no talking,Laughing or noise in general the people there then talked to us about what had just happened and then we left on the way out the gave us cookies(Unrelated to story but it was the best part). This day we would all remember

  21. On October 3rd 2017, Portage Warrior Orange Volleyball team had a game against Sun Prairie at Cardinal Heights Upper Middle School in Sun Prairie.

“Let’s go Portage!” Yelled the crowd. The players cheered for their team on the court as the ball was served over the net. The ball went back and forth between the two teams as each player hit the ball.Portage then got the ball back. As one of their players served the ball, the girls on the other team were down and ready. It was a vigorous game and portage almost astrayed but they pulled it off in the end winning 3 out of 4 games.
Just ask yourself this question, Will Portage be so lucky next time?

  22. Why does Sexuality/Gender matter?

Today there are many different types of sexualities. Such as…
Asexuality: Which is not being/Having a sexual attraction to others. Bisexuality: Is being/having attraction to both males and females. Homosexuality: Is having a sexual attraction to people of the same sex. Pansexuality or Omnisexuality: Is having a sexual, romantic, or emotional towards every gender or sex.
One question many people ask is why do others care about everyone else's sexuality/gender? The answer that these people often receive is some people think it os wrong and others think it is right. In many people's opinions these people are not safe. People also think that it is not safe for these people to go out in public.
Here are some examples of the people who felt safe and supported enough to come out…
Shane dawson: Actor, singer, producer, and youtube celebrity, Came out as Bisexual on July 7th 2015.
Another example is Frankie James Grande: Older brother of Ariana Grande, dancer, actor, producer, singer, tv host, Youtube personality, and participant of season 16 of Big Brother came out as Gay in December of 2003. When asked Ariana simply said “ Great! When do I get to meet your boyfriend?” When later interviewed Ariana told reporters that in her family being Gay was not only supported it was celebrated.
Today there are many people around the world who are a different sexuality or gender. So we should learn to embrace them and make them feel safe to come out and be themselves!

  23. School is long and some people want less school hours because it is a big issue and school is seven hours and taking away a few classes could lower the amount of time students have to go to school.
A regular class period is 45 to 40 minutes and some of these hours aren't really enjoyable to the students or the student doesn’t even want to take the class.
Getting rid of these classes could help the student get work done at home or let the student do activities outside of school.
There are classes that aren’t required that are there just to take up time and students should have a choice on what classes they want to take and what classes they should take.
The students can take these exploratory classes if by choice and they still have the same time in school and before by taking these classes.
Having less hours would help the students outside of school getting a job or helping their family members if they need help.
There many reasons for less school hours to stay the same and many say it will be like oz the great and powerful when you finally get it, it doesn’t help and it doesn’t work.
All in all this reporter found that giving less school hours a try might be a good thing for the students.
