A Colony on Mars?

Science Class

Activity for January 21 & 22

Mars Colony Activity Sheet

There is a group planning to create a colony on Mars.  Will it work?  Would you go?  Let's take some time to explore the idea of a colony on Mars by completing the "Mars Colony Activity Sheet" that is linked above.

When you are done, write an argument about whether or not you believe the Mars One mission will be successful or not.  Remember to include at least 3 reasons to back up your opinion.  After posting your argument, take some time to respond to other students' arguments.

January 22 Warm Up - Complete and show me when you have a 5/5.  Do not worry about this until Wednesday at the beginning of the hour.  We will do a different warm up on Tuesday.

  1. I believe the marsOne colony will fail. first of all, i don't think they can get all that money in 10 years. Secondly, if someone does go they will want to come home or get bored there. So they might commit suicide. Finally, what if those robots they send to mars don't work when the Humans get there. Clearly MarsOne will be a failure.

    1. That is a "nice" thought. Good way to put it.

    2. Nice thought. I bet people will commit suicide.

    3. I never though of that. Especially the second reason.

  2. I believe the MarsOne colony will fail. First of all, They barely have enough money so far, and since that 6 billion dollars was just an estimate they might need more money than that. Secondly, what happens if the people don't make it to Mars? They would practically be saying goodbye to lives, 6 billion dollars, equipment, and most importantly peoples trust! Finally, what happens if the equipment fails? Then they would have to rebuild it all adding to the time they want to send people to Mars! It also would add to the amount of money they need. Clearly MarsOne will be a failure.

    1. I never even thought about if they don't make it to Mars. But wow.. That's true they would be losing a LOT of things, good bye to lives, money, and any possible chance of learning with this mission.

    2. I agree they won't be able to see their family and risking their lives! They will be losing a lot of things!

  3. I believe the Mars One colony will fail. First of all, I don't think you can program a rover to make a home area, I don't even think it's possible to program it to do that, even with the technology today. Secondly, They will need a DSN to communicate, and NASA is the only one with it. And NASA isn't creating this and they didn't want NASA to be involved so they will have to somehow make one theirselves. Finally, they need like 6million dollars, and right now they only have about 100thousand. They need A LOT more money in 9 years and I don't think they will be able ton get that much. Clearly, Mars One will NOT work.

    1. I agree with the fact that they need more money. Not only do they need 6 million dollars but they actually need 6 billion dollars!

  4. I believe the mars One colony will succeed.First of all, we have good equipment for going to mars. Secondly, we have been studying Mars like forever/a long time with having the rovers on it.Finally, it will be in about 10 years that they will send the first crew of 4 people up to Mars so they will know more about Mars.Clearly, Mars One will be a success!!!!!!

    1. Those are some good reasons why, I didn't change my mind about it. But those are some of the up-sides of going.

    2. I didn't think about them having 10 years and that they will know more information...

      Delete
    3. It probably will be a success. We could probably pull it off.

      Delete
    4. I agree. We do know a lot about mars. And we have the right equipment.

    5. I agree with Taylor. Those are some good reasons, but it still didn't change my mind about it!

  5. I believe the Mars One colony will succeed. First of all, we have had many shuttles launched in the past. This knowledge will help us succeed. Secondly, I think it will work because by then, all of the practice and work will all have been completed. Lastly, we would have satellites in space to communicate with the people on the way. Clearly, I believe that the Mars One will be a success.

    ReplyDelete
  6. I believe the Mars One colony will fail because, how will they get so much money to do something that might not even work. Second what if a lot of people change their mind about wanting to go there? Last What will they do if they die on the show that they will make for it? What if everyone dies? Clearly, I believe that the Mars One mission will fail.

    1. Good thinking jacob i never thought of that;)

    2. I never thought of that, I don't think anyone will watch the show if they all die on it. That's smart, i didn't think of that!

    3. nice never thought of that

  7. I believe that MarsOne colony will fail. First of all, what if they run out of water? then they will die of thirst. Secondly, they probably can't communicate with us unless they have a specialized phone which will probably won't be invented before 2023. Finally, if there planning to use one rocket, there's no way that it can carry all the supplies, it would be too heavy. Clearly, MarsOne will be a failure.

    1. Exactly and they can't come back down for more water and they can't communicate with your family.

  8. I believe the Mars One colony will fail. First of all, they are planning on doing all of this in the course of 10 years. Other missions talk about 30 years from now! I just can't believe they could put this all together that quick. Secondly, they are planning to get all their money from the ads on their TV show. They need 6 million dollars!!!! I don't think they can make all of that off of ads. Finally, they need to make so many adjustments, like having air, having food, having the right temperature to live in, because it gets really cold and really hot. I just don't think they can make those adjustments quick and easily enogh. Clearly, Mars One will be a failure.

  10. I believe the Mars One colony will fail. First of all, there are way too many volcanic eruptions and sand storms and when the storms happen you will be staying in your little pod instead of discovering what Mars is like(even though you will live there forever!) Secondly, they need like 6 million dollars, and right now they only have about 100 thousand. They need A LOT more money in 9 years and I don't think they will be able to get that much! Finally, what happens when the people won’t make it to Mars and then they just risked their lives for NOTHING! Clearly Mars One will NOT WORK!

    ReplyDelete

    1. You will also be living there FOREVER!

      Delete
    2. Yeah the volcanic eruptions would be a big problem if they even came close to one.

      Delete
    3. That is a very good point. How would we survive those sand storms, and volcanic eruptions.

    4. That is what I thought they probably arent going to get the money in time.

  11. I believe the MarsOne colony will not succeed and here are my reasons... First of all, They are relieing on other companys to put an add on there web sight, secondly there mission is in 2023 and they need $6,000,000,000.00 us dollars and they only have $103,327.00, lastly NO MORE FAMILY!!!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  12. I believe that the MarsOne colony will fail. First of all, they need all this money how are they going to get it before the deadline. Secondly, what are they going to do if the people on Mars only live for a week and then die? They pretty much wasted all that money to send people there to live for a week and die. Finally, what if they run out of water and or food? How are they going to get it there without it taking so long for a spacecraft to fly there. Are they just gonna have them starve and die of thirst or what? Clearly, MarsOne will NOT WORK!

    ReplyDelete

    1. I like the second one what if they do die... all that work for nothing. Bummer.

    2. Yes I agree.

  13. I believe that the Mars One Colony will fail. First of all, Nobody is going to want to go on Mars. Nobody will want to be there forever. Would you want to be on a planet that has never been explored ever? Like when you die, you will be buried on Mars not Earth, because you can never com back to Earth. Secondly, NASA will not support any of this. they will not want to help pay for it and without NASA, they have no DSN satellite to get the information from the rovers to Earth from Mars. How will they get information from Mars to Earth? Finally, all this money is due in 2 years and we have very little of it saved up and we plan on getting all this money from a live video feed. Clearly Mars One will not work.

    1. I would not want to live there for the rest of my life we still have a life you know.

  14. I believe that the Mars colony will fail. First of all, they will probably not have enough money to pay for all of the stuff by the time needed. Secondly, what are the chances of all of those missions going correct. Finally, They are all wanting to put this together (without the money yet) in 10 years, when other missions talk about it 20 to 30 years before. Clearly Mars One will be a FAIL.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. and by 2016 they need to have the money to build the satellite going up there is no way!

    2. I like your last point when it takes about 20 to 30 years, those people are not thinking right.

      Delete
    3. yep i also agree with you nice job. I also love the last reason too :)

  15. I believe that MarsOne will not Suceed because.....First of all,The spaceship might explode when you launch like challenger and BOOM no more you.Secondly, you would be with complete strangers with the rest of your life. Finally, you would not live with your family I mean we should be happy with the planet and family we got.Obslovy this will fail with money and life.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I believe that the Mars One colony will fail. First of all they don't have enough money to even cover the satellite that is supposed‎ to be up in the air in 2016. Secondly, they don't have DSL for the satellite to talk to us. Finally they only have $103,327.00 and they need $6,000,000,000.00 by 2016. Clearly Mars One will be a fail.

  17. I believe the marsone colony will fail. First of all it takes $6,000,000,000,00 dollars that is a lot of money. Secondly, They have only raised $103,327.00 dollars and they have a long way to go. Finally they still have not got enough to make the first satellite up still. Clearly marsone will be a failure.

  18. I believe that the Mars One colony will succeed.First of all they are sending a satellite to map out mars.Secondly they are sending up a mars rover to find a good spot for a little place. Finally they will send one pod for the first person.Clearly Mars One will be a success.

    1. And where is all the money to do that. Where is the water, the food, the air we breath.

  19. I believe that Mars One colony will fail. First of all they need all the money in 2 years and they only have 100,000 and they need a lot more. Secondly how are we going to live if there is no air in Mars then we could all die. Finally what if we run out of food and water then we would die. There is no way the Mars One will work

Secondly, they need 6 million dollars to do this and they only have 100,000 dollars right now they need a LOT more!!! 21. I believe the MarsOne will be a fail. First of all,the money the main issuethey only have 100,000 dollars and they need 6 billion in 2 years I really believe that they not will reach there goal by a live stream, because they believe that if they have humans land on Mars like the moon it will raise 6 billion dollars like that!!! Secondaly, they expect the rovers to build these living spaces for people to live in I personally think that the rovers might malfunction while trying. Finally, what about the people who are apparently going to live there??? What if they run out of food, or air? What are they gonna do then??

  22. I believe the Mars One colony will fall. First of all what if they don't have the money to do it. Secondly, what if the rover dose not fint the right place I time. Finally what if thwe space ship exploded in the air, and if it dose the first people on mars will die. Clearly Mars One will be a FAILURE??????

  23. I believe that the Mars One colony will straight out fail. First of all, They need 6 billion dollars to launch 4 humans. They have 100,000 dollars i mean do you really think that they will actually get enough money by then. Secondly, we don't even have the resources to even live there. There is no water, no oxygen, no food, i mean are you kidding me i'm not going up there without any of that. Finally, we aren't even sponserd by NASA or DSN. Would you really think that NASA or DSN would think it would want us to go up there. They would say it's way to dangeros. Clearly Mars One will be a failure.

  24. I belive the mars one colony will fail. First of all, they don't have enough money.Secondly, they might not have studied hard enough. Finally,by 2023 their plan might not workClearly, mars one will be a failure.

  26. I believe the MarsOne colony will fail. First of all, i don't think they will earn six billion dollars in two years and you can't siksid if you don't have the materials. Secondly, MarsOne thinks that the us will be watching the launch twenty four seven just because it is a big deal. Finally, I don't think many people will volunteer to go to mars because it is a one way trip. So clearly mars one will be a faile.

    ReplyDelete
  27. what's siksid?

  29. I believe that Mars1 will fail. First of all, they have to get 6 billion dollars in 2 years. Secondly, how would you get the number of people you want to live in Mars for their WHOLE LIVES and not not come back down to visit. Finally, who will want to go up there without their family. Clearly Mars1 will be a complete FAILURE!

    ReplyDelete
  30. I believe the MarOne colony will be a fail. First of all the money they need they only have a bit money and they said its going to take about 2023 to launch but i bet its going to take longer then that. Secondly, When they build the satellite and the make a rover and let the rover build the building what if they they build it wrong and the mission failed, you did that for nothing!
Finally, what if the rocket or the landing went wrong, all americans taxes and the government will be mad. Clearly MarsOne will be a failure.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I believe the Mars One colony will succeed but with time. First of all, they will get radiation levels form Maven so they can map out dangerous levels of radiation for safety. Secondly, it will expand history and knowledge of Mars like tons!! Finally they are a least getting a start in the funds for the mission. Clearly Mars One will be a success.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I think the Mars One mission will fail. First of all, they need to use the DSN to communicate with their people on Mars and since NASA is competing with them I don't think they will be allowed to use it. Second, the rover has a lot to do to prepare and I think it will malfunction. Finally,I don't think even with all the people who will want to watch that they will make enough money. As you can see I think the Mars One mission will be a failure.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I believe that the Mars One colony will fail. First of all they need a LOT more money to actually build the planetary rovers that are going to build the pods. Secondly, they would need to build a deep space network satellite of there own on top of the rovers. Finally these pods. How do we know that they are going to be put together safely? The rovers could mess up somewhere along the line. Clearly mars one will be a fail.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I think they have a good chance of having a colony on mars. First of all they can have a rover find a place on mars far enough away from the volcano for the settlement. Second of all they can bring food to hold them over until they figure out a way to have enough for there whole life. Finally they have shelters they can go to if there is a sandstorm. Clearly they have a chance of living here

    ReplyDelete
  35. Because the air is mostly carbon dioxide? Right Divya

  36. I believe the Mars One colony will fail. First of all, they won't have the money for it. Secondly they talk about it like it's an easy thing to do, well they don't have the tools, and they won't get them. Last of all they don't have enough supplies to maintain life like they don't have enough food or water.

    ReplyDelete
  37. i believe the mars one colony will fail because how would they get all that atmosphere up on mars

    ReplyDelete
  38. I think mars O one will fail because they wont have anof money.

    ReplyDelete
  39. If they don't remember how to fix anything, they could all die. What if they wanted to go outside? If they ran out of oxygen tanks they would not be able to go outside. Another problem would be like shut-ins.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I really don't think that Mars One succeed. I think that they wouldn't be able to make it because these reasons. The first one is that they would have to have a lot of food and water. The amount of water a person goes through is around 1 thousand or more gallons a year. If they were gonna stay there the rest of their lives, they would need a lot of water and a lot of food to go up with them. The second reason is that you wouldn't be able to see your family and friends ever. Sure that would be cool being some of the first people on mars but you would get lonely without your friends and family. They would miss you and you know that you would miss your family if you would never get to see them. Who would wanna give up their family, that's a big risk. So really sending people might've been cool but there are things that people would have to give up, really big things. That's why i don't think that the mission would succeed.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I believe that mars colony will fail. Its a hard thing to do also they won't have enough money.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I don't believe the Mars One mission will work. One reason is because it is so expensive that most people can't afford it. People would not wan't to stay indoors forever. Most important, once you are there you can't go back to Planet Earth.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I don't think the mars mission will work. First because you can't go outside and get fresh air. Another reason is because you have to be super rich, and you can't come back...once your there your stuck there. and last, think about your family and friends, you wouldn't be able to see them ever again.

    ReplyDelete
  44. i don't thing they it is going to work because they dont have alot of many to do it and they dont have alot of time to do it and u can go back home and see your family and people are going to miss there family and not alot of people have money to go to space.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I think that mars one will not work and that they won't get the money in 10 years, The mars one homes might not work.
