Why did Rodman Philbrick write The Last Book in the Universe?

In Language Arts, we are currently working on essays to answer the question:
  • In an essay, please explain the purpose the author may have had in mind, cite specific passages to reinforce your thesis.  Discuss why this purpose is relevant to the modern reader.
We started out by figuring out what the question meant.  Then we looked at the lessons that we can all learn from the book.  Now it's time to pick why you think he wrote the book.
Take some time to write a comment about your choice for the author's purpose.  Tell why you think he wrote the book and give a little bit of evidence as well.  I've got a sample done for you.

Remember, there are lots of right answers.  However, not every single answer will be correct.

  1. I think Rodman Philbrick wrote Last Book in the Universe to show that we all need to take a chance and try. I never thought of it that way before this year. However, I think he was trying to show us all that we need to take a chance. We see it all over in the novel. Spaz took a chance and left Billy's latch. Ryter took a chance and went on this grand adventure. Lanaya took a chance and tried to convince the Masters to let normals into Eden. Not every chance they took was successful, but if they handn't taken those chances, Bean would have died and probes would still be used in the Urb.

    6. I agree with you that that drugs can ruin your life! Also its possible he wrote the book for that reason

  2. I think he wrote it so people wont do drugs. In the book there are probes and they are just like drugs. When people use the probes, bad stuff happens to them just like real drugs.

  4. I think that Robman Philbrick wrote the book to say take chances, because if Spaz didn't take a chance to get to bean then she would have died because they never would have met Lanya and she wouldn't have taken that chance for them bringing the into Eden, and if Ryter didn't come then Spaz would have dides because he wouldn't have taken the pipe.

  5. I believe Rodman Philbrick wtote the book because he was saying just like drugs, mind probes can rot your brain. Of course it's not like in 10 minutes all of your memory is gone. But when you use drugs it could slowly rot brain, and your KNOWLEDGE!!!!!!!

    1. Thats what happened to mongo it rotted his brain I did not think about the knowledge.

  9. I think he wrote the book to show you should not judge. Spaz had judged ryter and thought he was just some old gummy, but he ended up being his best friend. Spaz also thought Lanaya was a selfish proov. The prooves also judged the normals!

  10. I think Rodman Philbrick wrote The Last Book In The Universe to tell say we shouldn't do drugs. Probing is like drugs, and they rot your brain! Many people in the book were hurt, or different than they used to be because they have been probing. Probing is bad, and so are drugs, so that's why I think the lesson is to not do drugs.

  12. I think Rodman Philbrick wrote Last Book In The Universe because he wanted to show that everyone has to take chances. Taking chances can get you anywhere in life. Like how Spaz took a very big chance to go save Bean and because of that one chance he took, he made 3 friends, and went on a life changing experience. If he didn't take that chance, his sister would've died, Billy Bizmo would've killed Ryter from the start, and he would've never found out Billy was his dad.

  13. I think Rodman Philbrick wrote the book to take chances because I think that he is showing us that we should all take chances and try. Spaz, Ryter and Lanaya all took chances and most of the chances were good but not all that good ones. But I think that is one thing we should try.

  14. I think Rodman Philbrick wrote last book in the Universe to help people because in the book Spaz tried to keep Bean alive and Spaz kept Bean alive. The place Spaz could Keep Bean alive was only in Eden Where people can help people so they do not die. All the People in Eden are nice people

  15. I think Rodman Philbrick wrote Last Book in the Universe to take some chances in life. Lanaya took a chance and tried to have normals live in Eden. Ryter took a chance to go on his last BIG adventure. Finally, Spaz was taking a chance to save Bean.

  16. I think Rodman Philbrick wrote Last Book in the Universe to show not to underestamate people. I think this because when Jin and Lanaya were playing chess Bean wanted to play too, and it turned out that she was really good and that she beat Jin! Jin was sooo supried that a girl who wasn't ganeticly inprooved could beat a proov! So that shows not to undersetamate people.

  17. I think he wrote the book to teach us we need to take chances. Some examples are when Spaz went to save Bean even knowing the fact that he would be canceled if anyone found out. Another time was when Lanaya brought normals into eden and when Bree said she was adopting little face. I love this book so much because of the adventures and chances they took.

    4. I agree. They did take a lot of chances, but not all of the chances were good. You might want to mention how Ryter got wheeled to show that not all choices and chances are good. You dont have to, It's just an idea..

    5. I agree everyone should take chances.

      Delete
    6. Taylor, he took that chance instead of Spaz getting wheeled. So would rather that Spaz had gotten wheeled? I'm not trying to be mean but, I'm just trying to get your messaged clarified.

  18. I think Rodman Philbrick wrote Last Book in the Universe to that sometimes taking chance is a good thing some times like when Lanaya toke a chance when she brought Spaz , Ryter and Bean to Eden and when spaz left billy latch and when Ryter helped lanya when she was surrounded by monkey boy and Ryter toke a chance by sacrfice his life

  19. I think Rodman Philbrick wrote The Last Book In The Universe book to say not your whole life isn't going to be perfect. In the book it proofs that life isn't perfect. Like when they are living in stack boxes. that wasn't perfect. Or when they were in Eden everything was perfect.

    1. True very true, Mongo was in very bad shape and didn't have enough strength to get off the probing addiction.

    2. I agree but, I think he also wrote the book to teach
you to take chances.Cause if Spaz did not take a

      be alive.

  23. i tink Rodman Philbrick wrote last book in the universe because he wanted to say that racism is bad because in the book all or at least most of the proovs are like practically making fun of them because they say that they're eyes are dirty and they think that normals are a different type of person. They think that they are a lesser of person.

    Example 1: Spaz supported bean
    Example 2: Lanya supported spaz,ryder,bean
Example 3: Jin & Bree supported Lanya to let spaz and bean and ryder stay.

Even in real life people kill other people like it doesn't matter, or suicide themselves just because they think everything about life is bad and doesn't matter.

I think Rodman Philbrick wrote The Last Book in the Universe because he wanted to show us be kind to each other. It really shows you what it feels like to be treated wrong. There are multiple places where Ryter,Spaz,Little Face, and sometimes Lanaya aren't treated nicely. So I think he wants us to be kind to each other.

I think Rodman Philbrick wrote this book because he wanted everyone to to be prepared for what you think might be coming up on a trip, but they could have got on this trip with items they really need and they could have thought ahead what the trip would have went like because when they got there Lotti Getts told them they had to find a probe runner in order to see Bean and they were not prepared for that!

  31. I think Rodman Philbrick wrote The Last Book In The Universe to show to believe in yourself. The reason why is because if Spaz wouldn't have gone to save Bean she would have died. And if Billy Bizmo didn't have enough confidence to tell Spaz he was his son, Spaz would have never knew.

  32. I think Rodman philbrick wrote the last book in the universe. To prepare use for the future. In the book he talk about the big shake. That is an earthquake and it could destroy the world. Like the tall buildings are ruble and the rivers are gain. The sky is gray too and all the grass is gain muss most of the buildings for gain. so that's why I think he wrote the book.

  33. I think Rodman Philbrick wrote The Last Book In The Universe to tell you not to judge. Proovs judged normals because they weren't genetically approved. Charly judged Spaz because he was epileptic and didn't want Bean to catch epilepsy. Spaz judged Ryter because he talked about stuff in the past. And lastly, Jin judged Little Face because he was a normal and couldn't talk. There are a lot of harmful judging in this book. Most of them are bad for mostly no reason.
