The War to End All Wars: World War One

We've been discussing the book with our table groups.  Now it's time to branch out and find out what others that are reading this book think.  Take some time to think about a part of the book that would make for a good discussion.  It can be any part from the beginning to the part you read for today.

Tell about the part you read, give your thoughts about it, and invite others to share their thoughts too.

Here are some discussion stems.  Choose one of the following or make a similar type of post.

I want to talk about the part where __________________.  I thought _____________________.  What did you think?

The part that I thought was most interesting so far was _____________________________.  I think _________________________________________.  What did you think?

  1. I want to talk about the part where the Germans marched through Belgium and had no mercy. I thought that the Germans were crazy when they did this. They would just smash everything that got in their way and kill everything. They killed over 209 citizens in just one city. I think that the Germans were crazy and did not know what they were doing in this war. What do you think?

    1. I agree. I think that the Germans were crazy and that they were overly-brutal with what they did to the Belgians. One of the German generals even admitted that the Germans march through Belgium was brutal. I do not like how the Germans were killing citizens of Belgium even though they had played no role in the war. Finally, it angers me that the Germans declared war on Belgium in the first place for the sole reason that the Belgians did not allow the Germans to march through Belgium on their way to attack France.

    2. This was the start of the war and I think what the germans thought was that they need to start big but that doesn't explain why they did the horrible thing they did to the people they would use other people's bodies for cover trying to take over the place and this was such a tragedy to anyone in belgium

    3. I agree, because the Germans were set on trying to take over France and cripple British forces even though they had the upper hand in most of the battles their blood lust and their merciless actions got the best of them.

    4. Do you think this is why so many countries - like Denmark - gave up without much of a fight during WW2?

  2. I want to talk about the part where the Germans were attempting to take control over Verdun, a historical French site. I thought that it was very odd for the Germans to try to take over a place that they knew was not strategically important. Although it had great symbolic value for the French military, I still don't think it was wise for the Germans to continue to try and take over Verdun, while their military was suffering many casualties, all for a place that didn't have that much importance strategically. The fact that the French defended Verdun so hardly showed that they had patriotism. It truly showed that they thought so highly of themselves and the former military soldiers of the French Army so much that they were willing to die so that the Germans could not take over Verdun. What did you think? Do you think it was a good idea for the Germans to attempt to take control of Verdun?

    2. I agree with you. It was a horrible idea for the Germans to try and take over Verdun. First of all it had no strategic advantage so why would they want this anyway. They thought that the French would lose a lot more casualties then they would but they were wrong. The french lost as many as the Germans did and they defended it. Honestly it was quite stupid for the Germans to attack Verdon. The Germans lot many casualties in that battle and they could have prevented it

    3. I agree because I don't see the point of trying to take a place that has no strategical value, nothing to defend it with, and not having a steady army to fight for it.

    4. I think france wanted to keep this place under their control because they wanted to keep it because it a symbol for france and they didn't want to lose it because I think the other countries would of thought that they were weak if they couldn't keep this symbol for france.

  3. I want to talk about the part where the russians lost over 4 million men and got pushed so far back away from poland and galicia I thought that was crazy because that was 4 million men dead and retreating so far from poland and galicia. What did you think

    1. I agree it was crazy how the Russians lost so many men because they are the biggest country in the world, so you would think they would have more men to offer to help in the war.

    2. I also agree because it is true that four million people is not a small number of people. It amazes me that Russia did not concede from the war after this defeat, because although Russia is the largest country in the world, they do not have an unlimited amount of soldiers. I am sure that after their retreat from Poland and Galicia that they were running out of soldiers and that they were running out of people who would be willing to help the war effort.

    3. I totally agree with you. The fact that the Russians lost so many soldiers after this defeat just leaves me in shock. I mean they are the largest country in the world with a huge population, but 4 million is even big for them. I believe that this was an important part for Russia because the could've learned from that. This is a big reason why Russia basically was not in the war for long.

  4. I think the most interesting part of the book would be the part where the Germans and British stop fighting for Christmas in Chapter 5. I thought it was interesting because the Germans and British were set on murdering each other, but for one day they stopped because of Christmas even though they hated each other very much. What did you think?

    1. I agree. Although I think that it was a very odd action due to the fact that they were at war with one another, I believe that it showed that they could still be civil towards one another. I do however wish that this action could have prevented further conflict, and that maybe the war could have ended sooner.

    2. I think they did this in the spirit of christmas and they didn't want any blood shed on christmas because it was such a well known holiday and people wouldn't feel good killing someone on christmas.

    3. I agree with you. I think that it was so cool that they had a cease fire. I don't know how though they got along. I mean both sides know that they other side has murdered their own so I don't know how there was a big conflict. I thought it was really cool though that they had stopped fighting for Christmas
