The Great American Dust Bowl and Drowned City

We've been discussing the book with our table groups.  Now it's time to branch out and find out what others that are reading this book think.  Take some time to think about a part of the book that would make for a good discussion.  It can be any part from the beginning to the part you read for today.

Tell about the part you read, give your thoughts about it, and invite others to share their thoughts too.

Here are some discussion stems.  Choose one of the following or make a similar type of post.

I want to talk about the part where __________________.  I thought _____________________.  What did you think?

The part that I thought was most interesting so far was _____________________________.  I think _________________________________________.  What did you think?

  1. I want to talk about the part where the author draws a person who says,"Come on then, storm. Bring me what you got. Let's see who wins." I thought that the author might of made this entire thing up because if people knew the storm was coming why would they stay. Although the book did have this as an example it still doesn't make any sense. What do you think?

    2. I think that people didn't say that but it's describing what they felt if they stayed by choice

    3. I think the author just used that as an example for what the people who stayed thought .

    4. I thought the same thing as you! But, I also think they stayed because they knew the roads would get crowded and not be able to get out in time.

    5. I think the author put it is for it can give you an example of what people thought about staying.

    6. I wonder if that was really a real quote that someone actually said.

    7. People did actually think things like that. Some thought that it would be fine if they stayed.

  2. I want to talk about the part in The Great American Dust Bowl where the dust and dirt made it all the way to the east coast and a little into the ocean. I was surprised. I thought that the dirt from the dust bowls would stay in the Great Plains. This was also the part that I thought was most interesting. What do you think?

    2. I think that it is weird that stormes got out of the specific area called the dust bowl and I was also shocked when it said that the storms made it out to sea.

    3. I agree with you as well, well was no way it could all stay in one place.

    4. I agree with you for being amazed of how far it moved. An Idea that I have about this is that it reached the ocean because the wind pushed it. Once the Dust settled down after the wind stopped it would be where it stopped at, before it got picked up once again.

    6. I was surprised the dust made it that far out into the ocean. I thought the only really big parts of the storms were in the middle of the u.s. The wind must have been very strong to carry all the dust so far in distance.

  4. I want to talk about the part where the author mentions that the dust bowl was not just in one area but it spread out across america. I thought that the author was lying when he said in the book that there was even dust in Washington D.C,Chicago, and Atlanta. What do you think.

    1. the dust bole was so long when it stopped all the dust piles blew in the wind and were blown into D.C, Chicago, and Atlanta.

    2. The winds from the dust bowl were very strong. With that and the mini dust dunes it probably did make it to the Midwest and East Coast.

  5. (Drowned City)
I want to talk about the part of the book where it says that people were forced to stay because they had no means of transport when on another page it says that the train companies offered to take people but were refused and had trains leave the city empty. I think that if the companies or the family's are both not lying then people must have been not thinking. I'm wondering what you think about that?

    1. I agree with you. Most people don't think rationally in the heat of the moment so probably for those people they didn't realize the mistake until after they made it. I also think that like in the dust bowls the people were stubborn and wanted to stay in the same place even if it meant death.

  6. I wanted to talk about the part where in the picture only the birds, rabbits and people were the only ones running from the dust bole.one part where I was confused was what did the plates moving and making mountains have to do with the dust bole. what do you think.

    1. I think that part of the book was to help you get an idea on why the great plains are so flat in comparison to other places around the globe and to show how easily the dust could move in that area..

    2. I think it was trying to how the dust could move

    3. Maybe the plains and mountains were like a barrier that blocked out all the water and moistness from getting to the grass, until it probably died out and turned to dust.

  7. I want to talk about the part in the book Drowned City, I don't understand why the people would chose to stay when they knew what was going to happen and how bad it was. What do you think?

    1. I did some research about this and found out that the people that stayed, stayed because they didn't want to lose everything, leave the comfort of their homes, and a doctor at the time was making everyone think that they were going to survive. This is why people stayed home while Hurricane Katrina was coming.

    1. I think that was interesting as well but it made sense the dust must have made lots of static energy.

  9. I want to discuss the part in the Great American Dust Bowl when each time the dust storms came, people lost more and more food and animals. I thought that the dust killed thousands of wild animals like birds and rabbits. What really confused me is why they didn't use the dead animals for food? What do you think?
