We've been discussing the book with our table groups.  Now it's time to branch out and find out what others that are reading this book think.  Take some time to think about a part of the book that would make for a good discussion.  It can be any part from the beginning to the part you read for today.

Tell about the part you read, give your thoughts about it, and invite others to share their thoughts too.

Here are some discussion stems.  Choose one of the following or make a similar type of post.

The part that I thought was most interesting so far was _____________________________.  I think _________________________________________.  What did you think?

  1. I want to talk about the part in the book where Lee Harvey Oswald decided to kill the president. They never really told why he decided to actually kill him. They talked about how Lee killed him, but never why. They did talk about how tried to kill another important political party. I just didn't know why he did kill Kennedy, and I sill can't figure it out. What do you think?

    1. In the book they said that there was no known reason, but there were theories. They said it may have been because Oswald liked socialism and communism, but JFK liked democracy. There are also other theories that make sense, but I thought this one was probably most likely. He never had an obsession with him either. It is kind of weird to assassinate a president over beliefs.

    2. I agree with you Madi. I think that the author didn't give us good reasoning. He had reasoning for everything else, but not for the reason that Oswald shot the president. Since the author had apparently done research on everything else, and got ALL the details on the rest of the book, I don't understand why he didn't do much research on the reasoning behind Oswald's thinking.

    3. I agree. The author seemed hesitant when he was trying to explain why Oswald decided to kill the president. I guess he did give us few possible explanations, like having a rough childhood and just simply wanting to be a part of history. But, none of them really seemed like good reasoning as for why someone would decide to do such a horrible thing. I think the author should have given us a better reasoning.

  2. I want to talk about the part where Oswald took three shots at JFK. I thought that it was very risky to try and succeed at assassinating a president. I didn't think it was smart because he has children and a wife. Without the income of Oswald their life would become much harder than before. Also, when his children grow up they won't have a true father, only a mother. It was very risky, because he didn't have a for sure escape. He could have been shot, or captured right away. He got lucky. What were your thoughts about this part of the book?

    1. In the book it says that oswald never sussed at anything in life.He failed as a child, worker, husband, father, and even trying to kill the general. So he had nothing to lose ,And for his escape the officer that came up just passed by him.

    2. I agree with you. Lee should have thought this through a little better than he did. eh definitely should have considered his wife and children, with all that embarrassment and questioning. It's not like his wife and kids had anything to do with this, they just happened to be a small part of his life. If had thought out the situation then he might not have done it. That might be the reason that he decided to assassinate him so quickly without thinking much. HE thought that his escape plan was best he would get, but if he did escape he wouldn't be able to return to his family or anyone he loved. If he did then he could risk them getting hurt, or maybe even worse.,

    3. I think if he wanted to shoot the president, he should have practiced first. Now with this, I am not saying what he did was good, but Oswald should have planned things out better than what he did.

  3. I want to talk about the part where Oswald was planning for the assassination. I thought That he couldn't have thought that up in about 2 days, he doesn't have a strong motive for killing JFK. What did you think?

The part that I thought was most interesting so far was When it talked about Oswald's past, it sounded like it was ruff, between what had happened with his mom,His heath ,His marriage. I think that Oswald shouldn't have done something bad to become famous not at least in a negative way that affects the WHOLE nation. What did you think?

    1. I think that the whole thing was planned extremely fast, but they don't know exactly how long he had to plan the whole thing. They said that he could have had more or less time. I also agree that he didn't have strong motive to kill JFK. I agree with the fact that he had a rough childhood. He should have wanted to be known in history in a good way, not a bad way.

    2. I agree with you Lillie. The planning seem to have gone too fast to kill the president. Although his preparing was not very good, so I can see where the faults of in play.

    3. I agree. The planning process did seem to have gone very quickly. I found it hard to understand how he got everything ready to go in just two days, even if the escape plan wasn't though out well. I think planning something this big should have take a lot longer.

  4. I want to talk about the driver of the limousine that the Kennedy's were in. It confused me on why he decided to keep driving at that slow pace, even after something was obviously wrong. He didn't even try to get them out of there until the third gunshot was fired, and Kennedy was injured badly. If it were me, I would have at least tried to get out of there after the second gunshot. The president could have survived. What do you think?

    1. I definitely agree. If I was the driver and heard gunshots, I would have tried to get out of there as fast as possible. I believe the driver should have known how to handle this situation better than how he handled it. I think that JFK may have lived if he drove away at a fast pace.

    2. I also agree. the drivers and secret servicemen are trained to handle this type of situation. Even if they didn't entirely know what was happening they should have tried to leave as fast as possible and then figure out the situation. I you hear a gunshot then you should move faster driver!! I understand that they thought that it might have been a firecracker, but even if it was then they still should have left. What if they were using a firecracker and planned on blowing up the limo.

    3. I think the same thing Ruby why wouldn't you drive fast when you hear the first shot?Even if was a false shot that's the president!!!!JFK was a leader of a country why wouldn't you dive faster for his safety!?Also why wouldn't you have divers in the back, even if they where ordered not to!?

    4. Mrs. Kennedy's Secret Service Agent, Clint Hill, has written some books about what it's like to be an agent, and about this event. They will be on the shelf next year. They might be a good choice for workshop!

  5. I what to talk about the part where Oswald was planning where to hide the gun. When Oswald was debating on where to put the gun for hiding, how did the author find everything that Oswald was thinking? Where do you think the author found all of that information? Do you think he made it up just to make the book more interesting? What do you think on what the author's writing?

    1. I agree with you. I also thought that it was odd that the author knew all this about what happened. It's almost as if the author was stalking these people. Also I don't think that online sources would have all that information about what happened, especially all the personal things.

    2. I don't think that the author knew what Oswald was exactly thinking. I think it would be very hard to decide where to hide a murder weapon. I don't think I would have hid it where Oswald did. It would be simple to find. He should have hid it in a more secretive place. He ended up getting away with murder for a little time, but he left a trail that could be traced.

    3. I agree with you. I think it is a little weird that the author knows all these little details throughout the story. In some of the situations, I don't know how he would because there was no one actually there witnessing it, except Oswald. And, I don't think he would go into that much detail, if any, if her ever explained his plan to kill the president. I think that some of the details the author got from the people that witnessed it, but most of them he made up.

    4. I agree with you a 100% on this one, where did he get his information he couldn't have lived in that time period or he would be in his 70-80s.I think that it's weird to me that he knew about where the gun was, how did they even find it?
