Gonzales, TX, Dress Code

September 11 & 12

Today in class we read and annotated an article about the dress code in Gonzales, Texas.  On this blog, I'd like you to comment with your thoughts about the policy.  You will then reply to others' posts.

When you've done that, you need to try to find out what their policy is now.  We will discuss their new policy as well as how you found it in class.

  1. I think that the school's response was way too extreme! It seemed like they wanted to get attention for their policy.

    1. I think the school is trying to make it so the kids obey the rules that the school has and it wouldn't be that bad to were the suit.

    2. Yes, I think that too. I don't understand why someone would want attention for something like that. It's just dumb.

      Delete
    3. I don't think that it was that harsh, but I do think that maybe they just wanted attention.

      Delete
    4. I agree, this is way too extreme and the fact that they wanted to get the attention for this is just dumb!

  2. Dress codes are to be known for every school, but I think this is just way out of hand. I mean, why do you have to make them look like convicts, honestly

    2. Yupp I agree because it makes them pretty much makes them look like prisoners, but it would be cool.

  3. I think that it is to much to make them wear a prison jumpsuit. I don"t know if it will be very effective, though.

    1. it may be effective but way too strict i would beg my parents take me to another school and never break another DRESS CODE!!!!

  4. I think that what the school did was a little too much. I mean, just having the prison jumpsuits are bad, but it's even worse when the inmates have made the suits themselves. I do find it good that they still allow to let the students have the choice of calling their parents and having them bring a pair of clothes to school for them.

    ReplyDelete
  5. I think that the response of the problem was a little crazy. Having to make kids wear jail uniforms. Why would you make them wear unifoms in the first place?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, I agree. What is the point? I don't think it will be effective. There is an alternative option for the students. They can call a parent to bring clothes, so I think that was good.

      Delete
    2. it's so dumb. it doesn't need to be so harsh.

  11. I think that this school is downright crazy. I feel like someones fashion says something about them and that you can't take that away from anyone!!! This is just plain out crazy! I would like to just go there and be like HA HA LOOK AT ME HA HA HA I'm wearing the WRONG clothes and prove them that this idea is just so dumb.

  13. I think that the schools rule is a little harsh. I think that they definitely should have a consequence for disobeying the dress code, but I don't think that that is the right way to handle it. I think that they should just either have them get new clothes or have an in school suspension.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I believe that this response is way too harsh, but it makes sense, because they say that they are a conservative community.

  16. I think that the prison outfits were a little much but, the kids need to know what to where. They could have thought of a different way, with less arguing and all that. Still it would be cool to were a prison uotfit for a day.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Exactly. I think it's just a little too harsh on them. At least they still have a chance on if they wanna go to In-School Suspension or have the parents bring a pair of clothes.

  19. I don't understand why the school had to humiliate the kids by making them wear Jumpsuits made by Prisoners. Kids are supposed to wear things that describe their own personality. I think that as long as kids are covered than they should be able to wear whatever they want, as long as it isn't inapropriate.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. i agree with you as long as they have their parents bring them their own clothes or they use their gym clothes, they shouldn't have to change into prison clothes

  20. If you want to get them to follow rules, don't make them look like outlaws.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. yeah i agree why would you get them to follow rules of wearing jump suits when you could be making them follow important rules

      Delete
  21. I don't think they should make them dress like that. Also, they shouldn't make it in school suspension, they could make it less harsh.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Dress codes are a policy for students to make better and safer decisions for their dress ways, not to make them look like convicts. If you want a student to dress in respectful and responsible clothes, than dress them in the appropriate attire, but jump suits aren't the correct way to do that. And honestly, how are jump suits any better of attire. I think that you should Either give them a warning, make them call their parents, or make them change into extra school clothes. Just not jump suits! I almost want to say that this rule puts a bad remark on the school. And who buys school supplies fromm a prison! Oh wait, this school is buying lunch trays, jump suits, and other school supplies for the students.....from prison!!

    ReplyDelete
  23. I think that the prison jumpsuits they a good job on it because now bums won't wear bad cloths or else they have to wear prison jumpsuits.

    ReplyDelete
  32. This schools police is cool because there is no shame in in style.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I liked the way they were doing it but the could of made so it was like if they made a fight they would get a jumpsuit.

  34. (By Ronnie and Aidan) We think that the penalty for dress code is too severe. We wonder what the penalty is for something worse. Are they serious about trying to set a new fashion trend! WOW! And in the 5th grade too. They would sell prison jumpsuits to school! What does this tell you about the people running the school, maybe they've been in prison?

    ReplyDelete
  35. I think it not good because i think that they should not haft to be like that because that is not fair because in all the other schools they do not haft to do that

    ReplyDelete
  36. good thought

  37. I think it is terrible that kids have to wear a prison jump suit. I mean if a girl wear to short of shorts who cares!! Have her call home it not that hard. these kids are not prisoners there students. Who wants to go to school knowing they might have to wear a jump suit. Sometimes teachers wear to short of things but do they have to wear prison suits no they don't!! It not fair that some kids have to wear them and others don't. I dont care that young kids don't know any better they still should have to wear a suit because there parents should know what they should wear and not wear and how are jump suits better then to short of cloths?! There not! Wearing jump suits it bad because these kids did nothing wrong! Who cares if they wear the "wrong" cloths. Who in there right mind buys school supplies from a prison, oh wait this school does! I mean prison lunch trays!

    ReplyDelete
  38. I do not like it because the suits are uncomfortable. And when its cold you will be cold.

    ReplyDelete
  39. It kind of dumm becasue they can change.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I think that making the students wear jumpsuits that were actually made by Texas inmates is a terrible thing to do.I think it is terrible thing because they are making them wear jumpsuits, dress code is a policy is for the students.not to make them look like prisoners.

  70. I think this rule is CRAZY.Kids should not be wearing prison jumpsuits!Kids should be free from jumpsuits and just be free!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I agree with that. Prisoners wear jumpsuits not kids who just wore the wrong thing. Prisoners got their freedom taken away because they did something really bad, but the kids didn't do something to get there freedom taken away.

      Delete
  71. I like the idea of Punishing them for not following the rules. The jumpsuit might be a little extreme but it is right that they punish them.

    ReplyDelete
  72. I think that they should let them change into sweatpants, jeans, or sweatshirts that they keep at the school. Going to the office to change is embarrassment enough, so we don't need the prison jumpsuits.

    ReplyDelete
  73. I think that this school is to extreme. The only way to show who we are at school is through your cloths. Students should not be treated as prisoners for wearing cloths. Let kids be who they want to be!

    ReplyDelete
  75. I think that is very cruel to make kids wear the jumpsuits because they aren't like little prisoners like it said in the article. I think that they should just give the kids sweatpants instead of the jumpsuits.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Why do you need to have prison jumpsuits if you have other choices on what to do? Cannot they just get something else then.

    ReplyDelete
  80. My first thought is why make them feel like prisoners? It's really not that big of a deal. They maybe just need a detention, not an in school suspension. I also am wondering do they just wear the jumpsuit the one day they break the dress code, or do they wear it for a period of days, weeks, etc.?

    ReplyDelete

    1. way to think outside of the box Peyton ;)

    2. Yes, they shouldn't feel like prisoners. Most schools want to make their students feel welcome, and at least not be totally miserable at school.

      Delete
    3. That is a good reason, do they wear them all the time

      Delete
  81. I think this whole thing is really weird cause honestly what if the police came in for a monthly search or something and they see a student in that and think the wrong idea? that wouldn't be good.

  83. I think its a terrible rule! I think they should just remind them not wear them to school. I think they have gone to far with the 'dress code.'

    ReplyDelete
  84. I think that you should get a simple lunch detention rather than having to wear a prison uniform. I can maybe see getting an in-school suspension, but that would be on extreme circumstances.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. i agree. A lunch detention would be better.

  85. I don't see why this is such a surprise. The school does want to spend real money on appropriate clothing for students. So the school buys cheap jumpsuits made by prisoners. It's another way for the school to save money!

    1. All schools will start giving kids jumpsuits now that you said they're SAVING MONEY.

  90. I think this isn't necessary, kids are just kids, not prison even kids may think school is like prison but it isn't. Kids should have the right to wear what they want and express who they are not, what the school wants them to be.

    ReplyDelete
  91. I think that it is not good that they make people wear the jumpsuit they should get regular clothing or just give them a supsension

  93. I think the jump suits show dicipline. So I like the idea, but I think they should give them a verbal warning, then a detention slip, and lastly have them wear the jump suit.

    ReplyDelete
  94. i think that this school is awesome they should have jumpsuits for everyone. Just so all these people that they think need to wear a bunch of expensive clothes. So if they had suits for everyone then they would not have people that think they are so much better just because they have more expensive clothes.

    ReplyDelete

    1. The jumpsuits probably cost like $5 dollars.

  95. I think that the idea of student wearing prison jumpsuits if they break the dress code is not a good idea. I think I would've prefer suspension over wearing a prison jumpsuit in class

    ReplyDelete
  96. I wonder why the parents don't get to have a say in what the school does.
The high school could give the students a warning or 2.
2,650 students is a lot of student.

    ReplyDelete
  97. I was looking at the last paragraph and it doesn't make sense why you would get a suspension for just not wearing the appropriate dress code once.

    ReplyDelete
  98. All schools have their own dress code, but I think that they took it a little bit too far. They aren't prisoners.

    ReplyDelete
  99. I do not think that the kids should have to wear prison jumpsuits. The reason I think that is because it's a waste of the prisoners time.

    ReplyDelete
  100. I think that it is to striked and that they should give them a chance before they have to where the jumpsuits.

    ReplyDelete
  101. I think that having prison jump suits is a little extreme. They ordered 82 jumpsuits that's unreal. I think that they should just get a suspension. They probably just do that to emberass them.

    ReplyDelete
  102. why do the Texas Inmate make the jumpsuits that the kids wear? When it told me that the students and the parents were crying i was wondering why were they crying? Why did the school buy another similar things from the Inmates? Why didn't the 1-4 grades didn't wear any jumpsuits? if dress code isnt a crime then why do they have to wear a jumpsuit if they break dress code?
