Part of Book: Where Emmett was carrying around a picture of a white woman and showing all of his friends.
ReplyDeleteMy thoughts: I thought this was kind of dumb of Emmett. He was in a very racist and segregated town. What if he would've been caught by a white man and they ended up killing him. I think he was only doing that to try to impress his cousins.
Question: Why was he actually showing all of his friends that picture? Was he trying to impress them?
I think that he was trying to impress them, but we all know how Emmett was a jokester. I think that he showed that picture because he was trying to impress his friends or because since he was kind of a jokester, he wanted to joke around.
DeleteI think it was probaly to impress his friends and to be a teenage boy.
DeleteHis friends may have known that the picture was from magazine.
DeleteI think that Emmett was trying to impress his cousins. I think this because he said that he had a lot of white girl friends in Chicago. His cousins might have thought that he could try to flirt with the most well-known girl in town.
DeleteGood question, I think Emmett was just trying to play around with his cousins. Also it talked about how Emmett's mother tried to talk to Emmett about how different it was in Mississippi then in Chicago. He thought that, that was weird and he didn't really understand. I think Emmett's mother should of talked to him more about Mississippi and the dangers there, than I think this might of not happened.
DeleteI think that he was trying to impress his friends. He probably thought that it would be cool to his friends if he had have a very pretty and young white woman as a friend.
DeleteI think that he had shown that picture to his cousin's because this book is very reliable, and the incident isn't from very long ago.
DeleteHis friends probably knew that it was bad but Emmett didn't knew because he just joke around and had fun like a kid at his age would.
DeleteOf course the male rebellion comes into play. Emmett wanted to live the experiences (derived from YOLO in my opinion). He also wanted to have the coolest reputation, and espionage would help raise the small shrapnel of time during his boyhood.
DeletePart of Book: When was in the store with those boys, and Emmett whistled at the women and then he could have gotten hurt. Also in the court the boys could have lied when he was in court, they could have said something way different than what actually happened.
ReplyDeleteMy Thought If all of the boys knew that she could do to someone, why would they let Emmett do it?
Question: Did Emmet know that he could have gotten hurt?
I think that he knew that he could get in trouble, but he either thought that it wasn't so bad or that it was kind of like how Chicago was and that people were over-reacting about the situation.
DeleteHe did he was just trying to be cool and for the poularity in the new city.
DeleteI think that Emmett knew he could get in trouble, but I think he was too caught up with all of the attention he was getting from friends.
DeleteI think Emmett knew he could get in trouble, but I don't think he knew what trouble would be coming his way. I also think that he wanted to get the attention from his cousins.
DeleteEmmett knew that it was bad but he thought just doing it to her wouldn't be bad.
DeleteI think Emmett knew that he could get in trouble or maybe get whipped, but I don't think he knew how severe segregation was there. So him not knowing that if a black male whistled or did some type of action to anger a white woman, that he could have had many consequences. In Emmett's case, it was death.
DeleteWhy didnt they do anything about it when he did it right away but wasnt till a couple days after.
DeletePart of Book: Where they talked about how they tortured Emmett in a shed.
ReplyDeleteMy thoughts: I feel bad about how he went through torture before they killed him. I also can't believe how two black men helped Emmett's murderers. One last thing is how the woman he whistled at was in the back seat of the car that Emmett was taken in.
Question: Why would the two black men help with the murder/ torture of Emmett Till?
Maybe the men were paid or forced too, or maybe they just didn't agree with what Emmett did.I don't support the crime, but since Emmett knew that it was very segregated at that time, it is a bit foolish to do that to a well-known white women.
DeleteNo disclaimers, but first of all, how does empathy even come into play if the experience was not viewed in first person? Also not to be a conspirator, but my theory is that racism was very contagious during that time in our nation. The black men were really trying to fit in with society and gain on their own reputation, they were playing the smart twist in the turn of life.
DeleteI feel bad too and I don't think that should have ever happened to him. I can not believe they helped him and I don't think they should have. Also I think that was really uncalled for. I sort of think that the men were paid to do that or they were forced.
DeleteI think that the two black men were helping because Bryant threatened them that if they did not help him, then they too would have been killed.
DeletePart of The Book: When they were beating Emmett in the shed. There were witnessess why did'nt they say anything. I get they were probally White and most whites were racist but still they should of said something.
ReplyDeleteMy Thoughts- Why would they do this just over whistling over a girl? I get it was during the 50's and that was a hard time. But seriosuly beating him and doing this.
Question- Why did they do it?
They got mad at him because black men can't flirt or date whites. They could have just wiped him but Mrs.Brant was very popular. Even though she was popular doesn't make it right for them to do this. We will never know why they did but all we know that it was not right.
DeleteThey got mad because in Mississippi it was really strict, and it was known to be really disrespectful, if a black man, when up to a white women, and asked for a date. I agree though, it was not right to do all those things to someone just for whistling at someone else.
DeleteMississippi is really strict. Also they got mad at him because black men are not supposed to flirt with or date whites. But I think that isn't necessary to do to someone just for whistling at them.
DeleteWell tough, if there were any black people, whites were very mean to them. Still, it is very mean to beat someone up if they are only doing a small act of rebellion.
DeletePart of the book:Emmet had lied and said that in chicage he had white firends and the people outside the bryants store wanted him to talk to the lady that was working their.
ReplyDeleteMy Thoughts:That this might not have happened if he had not lied.
Question:What did the people ouside the store think was going to happen
Part of the book: When Emmett was showing off the white women to all of his friends.
ReplyDeleteMy thoughts: I thought that was really dumb for Emmett to that. Why would he try to show off in front of his friends? The women that he tried to flirt with was a twenty year-old who was well known. When she accused him of doing that, of course everybody is going to be on her side supporting her! I know that he was only a young teenager, but why would Emmett do this? He knew that this time period was extremely racist. I don't support the crime whatsoever, but I think that what he did was not the smartest thing to do.
Question: If she was the only one in the store, how can they be so sure that this actually happened?
I agree with you. I don't think they could have a fair trial when there were really no witnesses, execpt for that white woman. Since there were no witnesses she could basically make up whatever story she want to make it look like Emmett Till was guilty and deserves to die.
DeletePart of the book: Emmett was carrying around a picture of a white women and showing it off to the boys outside of the store while trying to impress his cousins
ReplyDeleteMy thought: I thought this was kinda weird of him to be carrying around a photo of a white women because he knows how racism is in Mississippi.Plus its just weird. Also, he was trying to impress his cousins. Why does he need to impress them. They are his cousins.
Question: Why do you think he was trying to act all cool in front of his cousins and what do you think about him carrying around the photo of the white women?
I think he wants to impress them so they look up to him
DeleteI think he is just being a teenage boy or girl. A girl could carry around a picture of a Boy. We are just teenagers. It would be kinda creepy though.
DeleteShelbi B.
ReplyDeletePart of Book: I want to talk about the part of the book where they found Emmett in the river.
My thoughts: I thought that Emmett looked really bad after being in the river for three days. He also got beaten and shot. When Emmett was sent home to his mother, his mother didn't recognize him for a second.
Question: Why do you think Emmett's mother had an open casket? Do you think she would want everyone to see her boy like that?
I think she wanted people to see how bad things are getting and things like this should end.
DeleteWell, I think that she had an open casket, because she wanted people to see what the whites did to other black people, and what they did to a child. I think she wanted people to see how mean and cruel some people can be because of a color.
DeleteTo tell the world how much rasicm is part of their life's. This is the after, math of a whistle.
DeleteI think Emmett did look very mad too. But I also think that she wanted people to see how mad/bad things would get and what they would to stop that. I don't think that is okay just because or their color, also I think it makes no sense to do that.
DeletePart of Book: When it talked about how Emmett's mother wanted to talk to him about Mississippi, and the dangers.
ReplyDeleteMy thoughts: Emmett's mother talked to Emmett about Mississippi, and the differences there than in Chicago. I think that Emmett's mother should of spent a lot more time to talk to him about Mississippi, then I think this might of not happened to Emmett. I mean, she said to "respect all the whites there, and if they say to get on your knees and bow, do it willingly.
Question: What do you think about it?
I think that Emmett's mom did everything she could but Emmett shouldn't have to learn to be nice to whites. Yes Emmett should have listen and not have flirted with Brant but he was so use to being able to that he wasn't thinking. This doesn't make it right be he should have been thinking.
DeleteI think that they should have talked about it more. so i agree
DeletePartofbook:when emmet is found with nees above water.
ReplyDeleteMy thoughts: I wonder what made him float down the river and get stuck on shore
Do you know how he got stuck on shore
I think he got to the shore by flow of the water because it could have pushed him into the shore.
DeletePart Of Book: When Emmett whistled at the white women.
ReplyDeleteMy thoughts: Didn't Emmett know that its really bad in the south.
Questions: Did he just like her or was he showing off.
