“ One Voice” is a short story by Milissa de la Cruz. The claim of the story is don’t judge a person by their imagration status. The story is about a girl that’s named jasmine her parents are from the phillipeans and even at a really nice collage, she is getting messages in the halls targeted at her. The story takes place at Stanford college, in its’ halls, in the parking lot, and at a gym.

When Jasmine walks to her first class of the day she has to go down one hall. When she looks at the wall there's a big middle finger and a shocking message pointed at her. People are spray painting the halls of the college because they don't want her at the college.

Julias is an African-American that got her entire car spray-painted with racist slurs. She feels targeted so she might be taking a break from the school.

The last place that is important in the story is the gym. When Jasmine and one of her friends go to the gym to work out some guys talk about how her friend is hot. You probably think that's not bad, but they call her Asian which she is and they say that “ Asain women are stuck up so won't date them”.

Some of the events that take place are the spray-painted walls. The vandalized car, and the guys at the guys at the gym.

The spray painted walls are the first event that happens in the story. Jasmine is walking to Micro Biology. When she sees a big middle finger and a shocking message targeted towards her. She talks to her boyfriend about what is happening but he said its no big deal the janitors will get rid of it in a minute. Even though this could be interpreted as boyfriends issues, it is clearly racism and immigration status.

The second event that happens is the spray-painted car. The person that spray-painted the wall might have been the person that spray painted the car with racist slurs. Some one spray-painted Julia's entire car. Julia might take a break from the university because she feels targeted.

The last big event that happens is the guys at the gym. Jasmine, and her friend walk past the free weights. When a couple of meatheads lifting weights start laughing, one said “ look at that hot Asian chick” “ they’re too stuck-up to go out with me” his buddy added.

There are some figurative langues, In the short story. IT has some similes and metaphors.

In the short story, it talks about how sad they were about what was going on with jasmine and Julia. Yen-yen looked up at Jasmine with sadness in her eyes.

The figurative langue is showing that they fell hurt, and unsafe, with what's going on. They are trying to be strong without showing weakness.

In conclusion, the theme of the short story is don't judge someone by race and their imagration status. In the story there an girl that's named jasmine, and she goes to Stanford college and goes through a lot of stuff because her parents are from the phillipeans.

  2. One Voice

In the story One Voice, created by Melissa de la Cruz, is a young woman in college named Jazmine. She is being targeted by her classmates for being a different race. Not only her, but other classmates who are a different race as well.
The theme of the story is racism.

The evidence that supports this claim is the dialogue.
In the dialogue, it is shown that people are targeting others of color.
In the story, a girl named Julia Higgins, who is an African American student, gets her car spray painted with racial slurs, and even leaves school for a break because she feels targeted. Her situation gets around through the whole school and shared on social media.
There is also a scene where Jazmine, who is an immigrant from the Philippines, gets cat-called at her school.
She was passing by some boys with her boyfriend and they blurt out saying that she’s a, “hot Asian chick” and that “they could never get with a girl that fine”.

Another thing that supports my claim of racism is the theme is the plot.
The plot revolves around around the graffiti on the wall of the school that some classmates vandalized. The graffiti on the wall displays a middle finger for the whole school to view. Jazmine was affected by this so much that she joins a rally along with other students who are looking for justice and tired of all of the racism going on at their school.

    Also, figurative language.
Recall how the middle finger made Jazmine snap along with the other students.
The reason behind her getting mad at it was because of what the middle finger stands for and who it was targeting, other races. It was also a warning for them to not get too comfortable in the school, which also shows a marking of territory.

All of this could be interpreted as empathy, but in reality, it’s actually racism because it the story shows us the things that people of other color go through.

In conclusion, the theme is racism.

  3. One Voice Essay
    By Sean Grady

The short story One Voice, by Melissa De La Cruz, is a story about racism and how it affects her and people of color.
Jazmine is the main character of the story who feels the most personally attacked by the whole situation. The way she felt is a way that hasn't been explained. It's almost unexplainable but possible to explain (obviously). She did a really good job of explaining how she felt to others but they couldn't understand. When they tried to understand, it came off as rude and not their intentions.
When the graffiti was found by Jazmine, she was on the way to her class. During her class, she has a few friends there, she talks to her boyfriend about the situation. He just thinks that it'll blow over within the week. Jazmine finds this unsettling. She wants the message to stay up for it to serve justice and people can see it so they know what's going on. Her other friend in the class, who was Asian, felt personally attacked about this message too. While she didn't say anything, Jazmine could tell from the look in her eyes.
Jazmine did a good job telling her readers about how she felt about the situation. She described the graffiti as a big middle finger to her race. It's easy to understand the way she feels because of the way she explains it with figurative language. Another example would be how she felt that it was a warning not to get too comfortable. She never felt safe after that experience.
To conclude, Jazmine feels personally attacked as well as others. It is clear that the theme is don't let people feel alone in situations.
