  1. School Bus Safety
    By:Daytona

In Plainfield Wi. Tri County middle school, a semi hit the back of a bus when they were dropping a girl off. David Senft Jr. died, 6 others were injured.

After that day there was a law made, no sitting in the last 2 seats unless the bus is full. Not all counties in Wi. followed this law.

A reporter did research about school bus safety and found out that the bus is one of the safer vehicles because of compartmentalization.

In the article Decade After Plainfield School bus Crash by Channel 7 news, they interviewed Wi. State Patrol Lt. Karl Mittelstadt and she stated, “About 50% of all school buses operating in Wi. currently do have lettering across the top bulkhead that reads “Do no sit in back seats unless bus is full.”

In a interview between Sarah Razner and Deputy Waldschmidt he said “Safety for our children particularly around school buses, if or high importance and a citation is typically issued for any proven violations.

The third week in October (21st-25th) is school bus safety week. They really enforce it in certain places.

Here are some ways to stay safe. Look before you back out, look around in busy neighborhoods. Make sure you are alert and aware. You should get to the bus stop early.

You should maintain a safe distance away from the bus when its pulling up. Make sure you are visible to the driver. Hold onto the hand rails. Never walk behind a bus. If you drop something near the bus ask the driver.

You always want to stay safe and be safe.

  2. It all started when Carter was 6 years old he couldn’t have Twix,Kit Kat or Three musketeers because all of the candies were made in the same business as peanuts or nuts were.

Allergies are rising in the U.K,Canada and the United States.Allergies are caused by the immune system fighting substances in the environment. That should see as harmless known as allergens. There are a lot of different types of allergies some are Drug Food insect latex.Peanut shellfish fish are three of the most common allergies. Allergies have affected about 50 billion people , and has costed the United States four billion dollars. It’s also the 6th leading cause of chronic illnesses. 8.4% of children and 8.2 % adults have been diagnosed with hay fever. A study of 1,300 three year olds that ate at King's College in London France. 2.5% of those people now have peanut allergies.

Paul Unna suggested that the etiology of AD was due to “The inoculation of a germ.” Clinical trial of an oral immunotherapy regimen might be able to reduce sensitivity.By slowly exposing people to peanut protein over six months. To do this people will have to carefully measure. The clinical trial has helped two out of three people. There is also a experimental peanut drugs. Experts at the Mayo Clinic say that even with the new trail and drugs the point of this is not to get rid of allergies but to reduce them.

After only 10 months of having a three day weekend for state employes, Utah was able to save 1.8 million dollars in just energy costs. Having a three day weekend would change a lot about the world for instance every week people in the office have 112% of developing type two diabetes, 33% of having a stroke, and 13%of heart problems. Having a Three day weekend would help these problems go down.
Having a three day weekend would mean more times to spend more time with friends and family. It would also mean you would get more sleep to, most people sleep 40 hours a week having a three day weekend will increase those to 55 hours a week, and since your getting more sleep you would increase productivity.
It’s true you would get 1 less day at school or 1 less day at work but,it would increase productivity. In Wibit Philadelphia the company let their employees and workers and they got more work done in a 4 days a week more than 5 days a week and that’s because the employers and workers are getting more sleep. They were able to do more stuff in a 4 day workweek than 5.
Having a three day weekend would also help the climate. Some states say you would have 12,000 tons of co2 each year. And it would be less energy using, reduce energy consumption.
Having a three day weekend will help create a better and more environmentally safe world not only for fun but for many different reasons like helping stop climate change. Make people less sick and disease, and you would get more work done because you would get more sleep
Having one more day off won't hurt.

  4. Food Allergies Across the World

Research shows that kids are becoming more and more allergic to food.
A british teenager named Natasha Ednan-Laperouse died after eating a baguette containing sesame seeds. The label didn't say anything about there being sesame seeds on the baguette.
Some of the most common foods are milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, sesame, fish, and shellfish. There is no single explanation to why the world is becoming more allergic to foods.
An allergy is caused by substances fighting the immune system. About 50 years ago food allergies were rare but now across Europe 2% of adults, 8% of kids in the UK, and 9% in Australia have food allergies. Most of the allergic reaction have happened because of poor labeling.
In conclusion, people are becoming more allergic to food around the world.

  5. Many people believe gun control laws being put in place due to gun violence are violating our rights, but according to the NRA “the laws only bought waiting periods and limit to guns you can buy in a month they don’t limit the amount of guns and ammunition you can own.”

Before the Florida shooting the police knew that Nikolas had a gun and was making threats. But due to laws the weapon wasn’t able to be confiscated. On the other hand California has many gun control laws gun violence has rose 18% between 2014-2016. Earlier this year congress voted and 69 wanted to tighten gun control 6 wanted to loses it. In some states cops can have no knock warrants where they can just come into a house. This is a possible threat because the cop could be shot at if the person has a gun and thinks the cop is a burglar.
There are some things that could help with lowering gun violence. One is not allowing firearms into a place where alcohol is consumed. another solution could be longer waiting periods or cool off periods because if the person has time to cool off and think they might realize that violence or suicide isn’t the answer. Hand guns can only hold ten rounds.
Overall gun violence is a major problem but we are taking steps to prevent it.

  6. In 2018 children are far more likely to develop food allergies than ever before. Around 1 in every 13 children is allergic to something. In the US about 15 million people have food allergies and about 5.9 million kids. There is around 220 to 520 million people worldwide that have food allergies.

Around 90% of food allergies come from milk, eggs, peanuts, soy, wheat, fish and shellfish. In total, food allergies cause about 300,000 ambulance visits every year in children 18 and under. Around 90% of kids with asthma also are allergic to something. About 50 deaths every year in the US are caused by insect stings. When people are allergic to something when they are babies around 70% of people will develop more allergies when they get older.

Scientists don't know why people are becoming more allergic to foods. Some people think that hygiene has to do with it. Since people are washing their hands more there not getting as many infections. Infections are fought by the same mechanisms that are involved in tackling allergies, and when people aren't getting as many infections as they should their immune system attacks things that should be harmful. When your body meets a allergen your body produces a chemical called IgE. Other people believe that vitamin D can help people not develop food allergies. They think that vitamin D can help your immune system develop a healthy response making people less susceptible to allergies. Some people think that allergies are caused by environmental factors.

Many people with allergies also have asthma or eczema. Allergic reactions that give people sneezing and watery eyes can give people an asthma attack. In some people skin or food allergies can cause asthma symptoms. Asthma caused by allergic reactions is called allergic asthma or allergy induced asthma.

Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction. After a while anaphylaxis shock can become more severe. Food is not the only thing that can cause anaphylaxis. Anaphylactic shock can also be caused by latex, medicine, and other things.

In conclusion that is why allergies are becoming more common.

  7. Cyndi Corcoran is one of many people who uses the Ekso GT suit which is a robotic suit that helps people that are paralyzed or people who have strokes, walk again. Also the most common person to use it is a injured military veteran. Corcoran said ¨It's given me the freedom to get up and walk and practice a proper gait.¨
The implications of this investigation is to see how well the Ekso Gt suit really works. At first when the patient are using the suit the therapist control the suit, until they finally get enough strength back in their legs and can use the suit themselves.
Throughout the world 240 rehab centers and 30 countries have bought the robotic suit they also have sold 110 suits. They reason why rehab centers buy them is because of the price, It cost 100,000 euro which is 114,797.39 dollars.
The bionic suit works with sensors that pick up the shifts in the user's weight. Then the active motors drvce it and starts moving the legs. ¨It can help ensure that they don't get sick from sitting in a wheelchair all the time.¨ said Patrick Mcstravick.
As of december 14,2018 101,892,600 steps have been taken with people wearing the suit. It's also help over 19,500 patients. There are not enough suits for the demand. On the Ekso bionics web page it has a counter of how many steps have been taken while people are using the suit.
Cyndi said, that she would stay at the rehab center just in case someone cancels or couldn't make it, just so she can use the suir for a extra hours. She also got to demonstrate how the suit works and what it does. She showed scientist and they liked what it did and how it worked and they were going to help the company.

¨I was in bed for six month after my accident.¨ Said Mark Pollock. Mark was walking around the gym after his accident and with the suit on he took 3,000 steps in just one hour. Patrick McStravick said he is hoping that the government in the republic of ireland will see the benefit of the suit and hops that ireland will take the suit so they help their residents.
¨I would like to walk again,¨ said Nathan Harding. ¨But its small goals or now.¨

  8. Is Screen Time Good or Bad?

Most adults, especially parents, would agree that screen time is bad, right? Gaya Dowling, a researcher from the National Institute on Drug Abuse claims this about brain maturation “We don’t know yet if it’s being caused by the screen time. We don’t know yet if it is a bad thing.”

However, we haven't seen the effect of screen time for over long periods of time. Most researchers say infants should get none, toddlers should get an hour, children should get 2 hours, and teens should vary, depending on parents. Most researchers tend to agree that children shouldn’t have phones in their bedroom.

Programming is also a factor of screen time. Shows like Sesame Street for instance, are low programmed, and better for children. However, games or shows that are rated 18+ would more than likely be very highly programmed. Not only bad for children because of programming, but content that might not be suitable for them.

Maybe a good thing to do if you feel you should cut down on screen time, is to learn how to put down your device. Or stick to programming suitable for your age. Despite the learning games, or games that fry your brain. One last suggestion is, your parents. Since, I’m sure they’d glady take away any electronics, if you asked them to.

  9. Animal Testing Labs
Have you ever seen an animal after the lab? Probably not, because not very many of them are lucky enough to ever leave the lab. Do you ever wonder what ihappens to the animals in these labs? What kind of tests are done on them? How many animals are used? What kinds of animals? Well I’m about to explain to you what happens to these animals in the lab, and how we can help them.

Most of the animals tested in labs are our everyday pets, cats, dogs, bunnies, rats, mice, birds and many others… They also test on other more “wild” animals, such as monkeys, horses, Squirrels, deer, and different animals for different tests, to get different answers. All animals are at risk of being used as a test subject.

Not to mention the fact that most of the tests done on the animals are not necessarily safe, most have never been done before, just invented with clue once so ever if it could hurt the animals or not. Over 100 million animals die in the U.S. labs each year. That’s including the ones that are not able to be tested on anymore, but are too damaged to be given a home, so are therefore killed.

Scientists use animals as test subjects because they are the closest things to humans, but did it ever occur to you that animals suffer just like us? These animals spend their whole lives in these labs, most of them were born in the lab, which means they have never had a home, never been loved, never had a family. They spend their whole lives only knowing pain and irritation. Having needles stuck in them, being fed weird things, and being our test subjects. And what worse is that over 80% of these animals are not protected by the Animal Welfare Act, which means their deaths don't even count towards anything.

These tests on the animals cost more than most other tests. Testing on animals is a waste of government and time. These test don’t help, and so therefore the government is spending money of nonsense when we could be using that money to figure out alternatives or tests that will actually work.

Dr. Elias Zerhouni admitted that animal testing has been a huge failure and that he and his colleagues have come up with a solution. Harvard’s Wytt Institute has created “Organs On Chips”. They are these little chips that have a human organ on it. This is an alternative to animal testing.

Primatologist Jane Goodall helped facilitate the rescue of 26 squirrel monkeys from the U.S drug and food administered testing. She has proved that anyone can help these animals in need of a savior. These animals don’t have a voice to speak up and say something about these tests, so be their voice. Post, Tweet, Write, anything you can to get word out about these tests, anything that could possibly help these poor test subjects. Help them speak up, help them be heard.

  10. The current recreational use of cannabis is legal in 10 states. There are many stories to tell, and thoughts to express from many experts."We keep hearing cannabis is a gateway drug. It is a gateway drug. It’s a gateway to a better-quality life." — state Rep. Jim Lucas, R-Seymour. "Simply legalizing 'marijuana as medicine' is just a timid way of tiptoeing into waters that conscientious lawmakers know in their hearts should be avoided. ... Let’s hope that day never comes." — Curtis Hill, Indiana attorney general. Marijuana legalization is one of the most controversial topics today, and you have all probably heard your fair share of thoughts from other people. Health minister Dr. David Clark said that “this will particularly welcome as another option for people living in chronic pain.” Also that “people nearing the end of their life should not have to worry about being arrested for exploring their options.”
New Zealand passed new laws legalizing medical marijuana to the public. In retaliation of the new laws, The oppositions health spokesman Dr. Shane Reti stated -- “These new laws are lazy, and dangerous, because they don’t provide details of planned medical marijuana scheme, and allow the dangers of smoking pot in public. So far the most effective solution to the drug abuse in states that legalized marijuana is anyone carrying more than 30 grams of marijuana would receive a fine of $5,000 - $10,000, and possibly jail time if if he or she has already been convicted.
An Eight year old boy, Ramsey Castleberry is diagnosed with severe autism. Ramsey has to take a daily battery of mood stabilizers, sleep aides, anticonvulsants, ect. All of which can bring negative long term side effects that can range from hormonal storms to a fatty liver. Ramsey’s mom has tried “everything” to try and help her son Ramsey to have the most normal childhood possible. There is one thing she has physically not been able to get a hand on, Marijuana. Unlike most states it’s technically legal to use as therapy for autistic children, but in indiana it's just not available yet. Their whole is on edge waiting for the green light, cause slowly, and sadly Ramsey’s case is getting worse.
Yes, drugs are a very large problem in the United States, but is possibly a larger solution for people who have the same case as Ramsey. So now it is a matter if if there are more cons than pros to medical marijuana. There are millions of dollars worth of studying being done at some of the world’s most advanced laboratories such as: “DELAVAN,” and “Steep Hill” who have made it their mission to explore the boundaries of recreational, and medical marijuana.

  11. A two-year-old boy named Ethan Wily recently caught a cold so it wasn’t surprising that he started coughing after eating some pistachio gelato. He had an allergic reaction, was coughing up mucus and could barely breathe by the time his parents got him to their local hospital. When interviewed by Elizabeth Landau a writer for CNN News, “His face was really swollen. He looked like an alien. We didn’t have any idea an allergy could be so bad.” Said Ethan’s father, Preston Wily of Lehi, Utah.

This is only one example of the effects of food allergies. People commonly outgrow food allergies such as eggs and milk, but more children in the U.S. are developing food allergies such as eggs, fish, soybean, peanut, nut, shellfish, milk, and wheat.
Recently the number of kids with food allergies went up eighteen percent from 1997 to 2007 according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
About three million children younger than eighteen years old had a food or digestive allergy in 2007.

This reporter interviewed Allison Aubrey the author of NPR News article ‘Are Food Allergies on the Rise?’ about the answers they received from the experts they interviewed. Aubrey interviewed experts such as doctors, pediatricians, and had used reports from the National Academy of Science to see what experts had to say about the issue. Experts say they don’t exactly know what the issue is and exactly why food allergies are on the rise.
Food allergies are often self-diagnosed and symptoms can be misinterpreted. Sometimes people can’t distinguish a food allergy from other conditions such as lactose or gluten sensitivity, which don’t fit the medical definition of allergy.
“ There are a lot of misconceptions about what a food allergy is,” says Dr. Virginia Stallings, a board-certified nutrition pediatrician at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and the chair of the committee that wrote the new report.
“ The reason food allergy symptoms are often confused with other conditions such as lactose intolerance is because there’s an overlap in some of the symptoms,” Stallings explains. Also, food allergies can be complicated to diagnose. “ We do not have the optimal diagnostic tool. There isn’t one skin test or blood test that can accurately determine whether a person has a food allergy to a specific food,” says Stallings.
Although experts are still clueless as to why these allergies are causing such problems and are recently on the rise, they may have an idea.

One theory is that the western diet has made people more susceptible to developing allergies and other illnesses.”The decrease in richness of gut bacteria in westerners may have something to do with the rise in allergies in industrialized countries,” said Dr. Paolo Lionetti Of the department of pediatrics at Meyer Children's Hospital at the University of Florence.
Will experts be able to come up with a real explanation as to why the food allergies in people are recently becoming worse?

  12. How Does Social Media Affect Our Society?
    Polaris S.

A lot of people have social media accounts for many different reasons. Did you know that seven out of ten Americans use social media sites such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat as of 2018. That number continues to rise today. People use social media to show pictures, communicate with others, share news and more. Social media is also used for business and marketing.

First, a survey found that 89% of teens from ages 13-17 have their own smartphones. Some people use the social media to bully others. Some use it to communicate with friends or for business. Also, students are using social media to talk about school assignments. Students who use social media while doing homework tend to have lower grades. Next, studies have shown that people are less involved in face to face interactions. Now, social media has created more jobs. An example is Mckinsey Global Institute studied that communication from social media added between $900 billion - $1.3 trillion to the economy.

Finally, taking a break from social media can help your personal life. When looking at the facts people spend a lot of time on social media. This can affect their daily life or it can be helpful. It can lead to a successful business or distracting. Now that people know how much social media affects their daily life who’s life does it actually affect?

  13. Part 1 Death penalty, also known as capital punishment came to the Americas influenced from Britain. When European settlers came to the Americas, and with the hopes of practicing capital punishment. The first recorded penalty was of Captain George Kendall in Jamestown, VA 1608. The execution of Kendall was for being a spy helping Spain.
1612 Virginia Governor Sir Thomas Dale made it so death penalty could also be for very minor things, like stealing. Evolving through all the years it's only been for bigger more serious things, like murder, treason, espionage, war crimes, and crimes against humanity.
Since the early 1970’s many things have changed throughout the capital punishment. In 1973 there has been 154 verified cases of death sentencing row innocent, because of technology that wasn't able to do a DNA test. 20 defences sentenced because of no DNA testing. 330 innocent people reported innocent from DNA evidence.
Henry McCollum was released after 30 years of being on death row. From the American Civil Liberties Union, trial portuin takes 6 times longer than if state was seeking life without parole. Death sentencing cases on average take 25 years to reach ultimate resolution. With that litigation cost taxpayers more than prosecution seeking life without parole. Colorado, Holmes Jury spend several weeks hearing evidence, shell out to approximately $3.5 million. An average $150,000, if the state had not sought the death penalty.
Capital punishment includes lethal injection, execution by firing squad, gas chamber, and electrocution. But some have failed at times. Failed electrocution turned public opinion against method. The Justice System says that lethal injection is an “humane” way to end life. Yet lethal injection is the most common way of execution. Deborah Denno, professor of law at Fordham University in New York, have always been skeptical of that characterization. The first lethal injection “botched”- Ms. Denna “were just looking at this with much more criticism and security than we did before”.
Bill Ray Irick, Edmund Zagorski, and David Earl Miller. With Miller and Zatorski both with severe mental illness. All three men are white, not yet prompted a discussion of one of its major problems, thoroughly infected with racial bias. Zagorski orbiting nature of the sentence, believed the idea of death row is home to unrepentant monsters. In Tennessee, 58 on death row with 38 being African American. 48% in a state with the population being 17% black. Though death sentencing has been declining nationally. In Tennessee 117 men received death row, 11 being black.

  14. Part 2 American Bar Association Assessment of Tennessee’s Death Penalty, Supreme Court Chief Justice Birch has voiced concerns of racial bias, permeating the death penalty process in Tennessee. “Numerous studies have indicated that racial bias may be a significant role in determining which defendants receive death row”. Those who kill whites are more likely sentenced to death than if killed blacks. Some aggravating factors are wether crime took more than one victim and wether the homicide involved other felonies like rape or robbery. 4.75% more likely to death penalty of killing a white with one if these aggravating factors. 3.14% more likely to death penalty with one of the aggravating factors, with this only being in Tennessee.
In 1958 Justice Earl Warren wrote of the Eighth Amendment, which “prohibits cruel and unusual punishment that it must draw its meaning from evolving standards of decency that mark the progress of maturing society”. Justice Stephen Breyer an American lawyer, professor, jurist serving as an associate Justice of the supreme court since 1994, and Ruth Bader Ginsburg an associate Justice of the supreme court, suggested in a “dissenting opinion” that capital punishment itself is “unconstitutional”. Justice Sotomayor says “There's a whole lot of things that people don't want to accept the reality of but they're there”.
Victims died worst deaths, than a person on death row. “For those who remain on death row, understand that everyone is going to die.. Statistically speaking, we have very much easier death than most, So I encourage you to embrace it and celebrate our true liberation before society figures it out and condemns us to life without parole and we too will die a lingering death”. ~David Zick
