  1. What kind of pranks have been pulled on you before. So on October 11th, 2018 most of the books at Bartels MIddle School were challenged or banned for being “Inappropriate.” The principal Mr. Rueth came in and gave us the letter from the School Board. It said that they were banning books until the school board could look over them.
Most of the kids in Ms. Devries 2nd hour english class got mad and tried to hide there books because most books are challenged or banned. One of my best friends tried to sit on her book. The books are good because of how the author wrote them. Students believe if our parents are ok with us reading books with stuff like that in the book they are ok to read.
After all of the trama we went through losing our books, it was a prank. How would you feel if this happened to you?

  2. Have you ever gone somewhere and had that eerie feeling that someone is watching you? If so then you should know how these two girls felt when they realized that there had been two boys following them around the mall. By the time they noticed, they weren't really sure how long the boys had been there. But they knew, they did not like it. “The two boys had looked our age, but even so, it's really creepy when someone just out of the blue starts to follow you, obviously not having any intent to say anything.” So the girls began to go in and out of different stores hoping to lose the boys, but everytime they sat at the door a little bit back, and waited. And so they decided to go through one of the jewelry shops and not go back the way they came, and it worked they lost the boys. So deciding that the were fine, they decided to go to the food court. Realizing the two boys were there as well, they decided to leave and walk to mc. Donalds.

  3. On the 11th of october the bartels middle school principal Mr.Rueth came into Ms.DeVries english class and gave her a note that said they had to take all banned or challenged books of of the shelf. So Ms.DeVries started to take down all of her books or else she could have gotten fried. Her class was mad at the school board for not letting them read the books. The whole class wanted the books to come back on the shelf so they could read them. Then, Ms.DeVries told them that it was all a prank.

  4. On a sunny fall day after school, they were on their way home. It was perfect t-shirt or sweatshirt weather, and she had the plan of going home and playing outside. Until on the way home they there was squealing tires and lots of red and blue lights.

While seeing all the lights and hearing all the noises they all had no idea what was going on. Then the car stopped with all the cops behind it. Officers with guns had them pointed and the man on his knees on the ground. While the Mom was afraid and freaked out, the daughter had her phone out and was recording it all. She had gotten out of the car to see what was going on. It didn't take long for mom to find out what had happened.

After mom heard the news she made sure to get home as quickly, safely and as fat as possible. Once being home for a little bit she had told the husband and the kid what's had happened. The man was firing a gun while driving down Highways 16.

  5. A cold trip to the Popcorn Corner

On a cold sunny afternoon, walking down the sidewalks next to the busy streets of Portage, a cool breeze flew by feeling like it's rushing through our skin. As we waited for the crosswalk light to say we could walk, It felt like the temperature kept dropping, more and more and more.

As we approached the popcorn corner to buy our ice cream, we were freezing. We walked up to the window where you order the food, we ordered our ice cream and paid. “Its taking forever” says Daytona. Riley agrees, finally our ice cream arrives and we walk over to a table to eat our ice cream, the ice cream made us even more cold. We went on our way for the cold and long walk home.

It felt like the temperature had dropped altot, but it hadn’t. Finally as we approached the house, were nearly frozen, a relief comes when we walk inside into the nice warm heat.

  6. Have you ever had to go somewhere when you were so bored and cold and it felt like you were there forever. Well during the weekend the Portage marching bad was competing to see who the best band in the state was. The bands were competing in Whitewater Wisconsin.

A young 13 year old boy was in the stands up in about the tenth row and around the 45 yard line. He didn't want to be there because it was a cool fall day with a breeze but when the sun went down it got cold. He had to be out there with his family and he didn't want be there he was there though but his parents made him go because it was his brothers last time in marching band.

They flicked on the lights and the bands started to perform. When all the bands were marching they all had on their uniforms, their uniforms were all different colors, red, blue, orange, black, white, green, and orange. WIth all the bands that were performing it took about two hours. Part of the reason why it took so long was because all the bands had to take out their props and put them up and they had to set up their pit which is percussion. Then after they were done they had to take it all down.

There's this one band that always gets first they've won for the past 14 years the band is called greendale. Then Sauk Prairie normally gets second or third and Portage gets second or third. Well once again Green dale got first, but this time a band that the boy and his family didn't like that much got second. Sauk Prairie got third and Portage got Fourth. The boy and his family thought that Green dale would get first the Sauk Prairie then Portage bu they were wrong.

How would you feel if you were the boy and was bored and had to sit their cold for two hours.

  7. Hurricanes and Oil

In early October when fall is now in full bloom, in eastern United States, Florida is getting hit by hurricane Micheal. Since Mid-September the hurricane has been pummelling through Florida and it’s surrounding states. Hurricanes are to be expected since it’s hurricane season but hurricane Micheal has become pretty big and is now affecting the the oil prices of states and towns in eastern United States.
The oil prices recently went up by fifty cents and then went down by twenty cents in the span of four days. Most people are happy about that though because October is the time they start using heaters more frequently and start paying for oil. Hurricane Micheal is spreading and while it does the oil prices vary from going up to going down very often.
How much more will it change and will hurricane Micheal only get bigger or will it stop?

  8. Volleyball Girls
On October 17, 2018 at 3:15 all these children came running out of their classrooms. Some had volleyball practice while others went to other sport practices and to the bus. All the volleyball girls ran into the BMS gym. They went in the locker rooms, did their thing. After awhile the girls were coming out. The girls set up the nets, ran six laps, and stretched. After stretching they got a partener, stretched their arms and practiced volleying/bumping.

Then, they started serving both orange and black team. In the beginning both teams work together. When they were done doing all the warmups the teams split. Orange had the right side of the gym, and black had the left side.

Right away black team started scrimming each other, there were 10 players. The girls were laughing and messing around. Couch Ammerman was getting very angry. Girls were also missing a lot of their serves which made her even more mad.

After scrimming we practiced serving by getting six consecutive serves. If the girls missed one they had to start back at zero until they made it. As soon as the girls finished they went over to the orange team and scrimmiged then.

Finally they all got their serves and at 5:00 p.m they started taking down the nets, stretched, and went home. October 17 went well, girls took and L, but better luck next time.

  9. On Saturday of October 13, me and my family went to Madison. We went to Madison for many different reasons. One of the reasons was to buy presents for my two younger sisters, Arwen and Eowyn. We spent half the day at target shopping for Arwen and Eowyn.
We would then go and get something to eat at culver's,while we were walking into culvers my sister pointed out some Us army people we wanted to thank them for the services but decided not to. We ate quickly because we still had a lot of shopping to do at the mall.
We got to the mall hoping to find some new basketball sneakers. But we never found any, next we would go to barnes and nobles to find some to books and, to get more seasons of bob's burgers.
After we bought all of our stuff we decided we should go home. On the way home thought we saw famous footwear and decided to try to find some basketball sneakers there. It was a quick stop and took only five minutes to get out of there.
This was a day that I did not like fist of all I spent my holiday shopping for stuff and, that means only one more day until school. Second of all I hate shopping it’s so boring and I have better thing to do than shop.

  10. On Friday we went to the science fair in Madison Wisconsin. Everyone had a good time, we did many cool activities and learned how things work.
First, people made DNA “chains” that helped them learn how DNA works. Also we go to learn how our digestive system works but we used crackers, vinegar, and baking soda.
Next, the group split up into 2 different groups. Some went to a flight simulation and some went to see what the life of an ant is like. Almost everyone that went on the flight simulation said that it was a lot of fun. They also said that it was just like flying even though some of them crashed.
Than, the people that went to go see what life is like as an ant said that it was a really cool experience. They learned that ants are stronger than we think. Just one ant alone can carry a large leaf by itself.
The next thing the group did was go to the Rock Museum. There was many different types of rocks, some were colorful, some were round, some were flat. There were neon and “glow in the dark”.
Finally, everyone piled onto their bus and went home.

  11. Surprise
On october 11th, 2018 the school board sent a memo saying bms students could not read banned or challenged books owned by the school. The 8th grade english class reacted badly to this news because they were all enjoying the books they were reading. Some kids had there book in their chrome bookbag so they wouldn't get taken away. Ms Devries, the teacher said ¨ I don't want to lose my job.¨ After she said this , everyone decided to hand in their banned books. The teacher looked through the classroom library to find other books bms students could not read. So after she did
Later on that day , it turned out that Mr Rueth and Ms. Devries had tricked the bms students. There never really was a memo from the school board about banned or challenged books. The bms students could read the original books they were enjoying so much! The students did not think this was a funny trick at all. The students thought it was a stupid rule and were upset. Then the teacher , handed the books back. The students were happy and very surprised . the teacher said , ¨ Don't hate me, i had to it.¨”

  12. Banned Books

Why would they do that? On October 11 2018, during our 2nd hour mini lesson Mr.Reuth came in with a piece of paper saying our books are banned because they are “inappropriate”. Everyone was confused and disappointed. A student tried hiding her book under her leg but Mrs.DeVries saw it. Kate tried hiding her book and another student Jamie did. Still being upset about what just happened and our teacher told us were had to write an article about something that has happened to us, obviously a lot of kids wrote about what just happened.
After everyone wrote their articles, which a lot of kids wrote about their books being taken, the teacher started handing the books back out to who was reading them. The kids were confused and the teacher told us it was all a prank. The students were mad the their teacher and principal for pranking them. Mrs.DeVries told us that the other English class got told that their fall break would be taken away do to bad behavior. I would be really upset about that too. Would the kids ever believe the teacher if this really happened?

  13. Superfoods

Superfoods are known for being super healthy for you. Although most people can’t stand eating superfoods because of “Their groody taste”. superfoods consist of many vegetables such as celery, kale, and spinach. Many people try mixing in superfoods with foods they like to make it easier to eat. Another thing people do is take the most ratchet, healthy foods, and make it into a smoothie so, #1 it slides down easy peasy, and #2 they can get all the nutrients they need so they can just get it over with.
Superfoods are groose to many people, almost all, but they have endless benefits. Instead of eating a junk food snack, next time eat some superfoods.

  14. It is October 14 2018.There is a slight breeze and a cold chill, with a west wind. It is approximately 10:00 am with grey and white clouds in the sky. Out at Harled´s farm you can hear the calf and cattle mooing as you pull in the drive telling you they are hungry.

Aa thirteen year old school girl and her uncle set off down the gravel drive towards the goat barn. All ready you can hear the goats that want food, just as you get by the hay shed. They reach their destination, the goat barn.

Starting with the back pasture door her uncle sets off to place a pole in the ground behind the door. He puts it back just enough so the goats can get through to eat grass and enough closed so the wind doesn't get through. As he does that the school girl takes their water bucket and drags it out to the door. She dumps it to get all the hay and bacteria out of it. Than she puts it back into the goat pen.

She places the hose in the bucket and turns on the well. She sets of for the hay shed to go and get some hay. She grabs a bail then places it in the goats pen. They start eating the hay and drinking water so she takes the hose out and places it on the ground.

There is this one goat names butterscotch. She always loves to come up to the school girl and jumps on her, the girl pets the goat for awhile. She's always happy to see her favorite goat.

All the goats eat the hay and drink there water last the girl gives them a scoop of grain, and they eat. The school girl and her uncle then set off to the gravel drive. The goats all do there think eating and sleeping the rest of the day. The girl and uncle then go up to the house and goes on with there day and got some mountain dew to drink.

  15. McDonald's weird worker
Walking into McDonald's is always the same. People walk in order, they get there order, consume it and leave. On October 13th around 8:48 pm everything was different. Two young girls walked in that night around the ages of 13-14. One of the girls stood in front of the cashier and says “I have exactly eight dollars, what'cha wanna get?” The blond stops to think and responds “Not sure, It doesn’t matter.” Both girls stand there for a minute or two before actually ordering. The girls finally decide they were going to order fries. They went up once again to register an old creepy man was taking their order. He took their order and that was it. He then later also brought it to them and stared at them in the weirdest manner. When the girls were finally done they had extra money so they decided to order Sundays. Yet again the creepy McDonalds worker took their order and served it to them and looked them up and down this time. The McDonald's worker stood there until the brunettes mom came and picked them up.
Weird, right? Have you ever had something like that happen to you?

  16. At 5:30 Thursday October the 18th the 8th grade Warrior football team started to show u for the game. Half an hour later everyone was there for their last game of the season against the Sun Prairie Cardinals. Portage lost the coin toss and kicked off. The kicker Hunter Francis booted the ball down the field and the Cardinals caught it. The Cardinals got the ball to the Warriors territory but were stopped. The Warriors got the ball but made no progress and that was how the first quarter went.

During the second quarter the ball stayed in the warriors red zone but no one scored. At half time the coaches gav the wariors a pep talk about how they were doing good and holding their own, but the lineman needed to give Dominic more time to pass or make bigger holes for the running backs. The Warriors would et the ball to start the second half.

The Warriors caught the ball and started at the 20 yard line. The first 2 play penalties were called on the Warriors and they were brought back to the 10 but on the 3rd play of the drive Domonic scrambled and ran the ball for a touchdown. Luke one of the kickers missed the field goal so the score was 6-0 Warriors. But the Cardinals came back and scored and made the field goal.

By the end of the fourth quarter the score was 20-22 Cardinals. The Warriors had the ball but turned it over and the cardinals who scored another touchdown to seal the game.

  18. Do you think books being banned in schools is right?Today in Portage Community Schools. The school administration banned a lot of the books because they think they should review the books because other districts did. The school wants us to read books we want to read but the thing is we can't if they are all banned. That day the principal went into all of the hours that had classes and gave the teacher a letter saying that all books are temporary banned while they are being reviewed by the school administration board. Some students even hid it. One person sat on a book, one put it in their shirt, but one gave it up when the person thought the teacher would be fired. Do you think that was a justful decision from the school administration board?

  19. From other schools to Bartels Middle there is a huge change in dress code. After asking 8th grade boys and girls how they feel about it, this reporter knows the difference in thoughts between the two genders.
Everyday on an average it seems 6 kids are getting asked to change their clothes or how they are wearing them. When teachers ask kids to change it is very rare that they get an easy respond back.
Every day walking down the hall you will hear at least one kid if not more bad talking a teacher because of it. They often use the word over exaggerate.
What about the teachers tho? Kids wonder if they have a specific dress code themselves. Is there ever a time where a teacher gets dress coded? Do they ever feel limited in what they can wear and do they feel like they waste money on clothing that they cant wear to school.
As girls may take the dresscode a little to far guys have a different opinion. Boys believe most of the dress code is reasonable but not as strict as it is. For example one boy said girls should be able to express themselves in what they wear but they cant.
It doesn't seem like anybody is putting too much effort in to change the dress code just a little bit. People can complain as much as they want but its not gonna solve the problem.
