I want to talk about Harvey Pettibone. At first it seemed like he was really a good guy who just got sucked in by the KKK. Like he just didn't take the time to investigate and figure out they are really bad. But then he goes and busts up the hotel and says, "it felt so good breaking that glass". He also gives rat poison to Merlin. Is he a good guy that got fooled, or is he really a bad guy after all? What do you think?
I didn't think he was bad at the begging but know it seems like he is and I think that he will keep doing worse things and become one of the leaders of the Klan.
I want to talk about when percelle says "I have my work cut out for me more than 200 black people coming to work on the dam i'll have to protect them." He also says the job does not pay enough. But what job does he have that he has to protect African Americans. Is there some kind of organisation that he works for that protect African Americans.?
percelle johnson said he had to protect 200 african americans from the kkk and themselves. But does it he like the kkk so why would he stop them? Why would he have to protect them from themselves.
Didn't you guys pay attention in the beginning of the book it said black people were beating each other up, that is why he is protecting them from themselves. And he is protecting them from the kkk because they kill blacks.
I want to talk about percelle because first he was for the klan now he is against? He said in his poem that he has to save 200 blacks from the klan and themselves.
I want to talk about Johnny Reeves. When I read "there is only one way to redeem myself with the klan brothers only one way to redeem myself with god." I think he's the one who shot Esther's dad. Did anything else think the same thing?
I want to talk about how Johnny caught with a girl doing some stuff. Then he tries to say that he was teaching her the good book. It made me think of the stirrings. Yuck.
I want to talk about, Jhonny Reeves. I was wondering about when the klan kicked Jhonny out, because his mom wanted help for him from hravey. I think it was a little harsh of harvey to ingor her and kick him out but he was forcing a school girl to kiss him and such. I also think that he killed the dog jerry and finished the job to shoot and try and kill Mr. Hirsh. I also think he is going to do something ese to prove to the klan he is worthy. Whatdo you guys think???

When I first heard of Esther's story and about her dad I thought it was so cool how he moved and started a shoe company just for her.Once I found out that Esther's dad getting shot I felt sorry for Esther because her dad and he did all this stuff for her. I also felt sorry because Esther could have taken the bullet but she didn't.What do u think about that whole situation?
I want to talk about Merlin. In the beginning of the book he was really mean and he liked the Klan and all. Now in this act when he was asked to kill Leanora with rat poison from Harvey he said "no". Maybe he did change after Leanora saved Esther. If he was still the same and didn't change he would probably be happy to kill Leanora. I liked now he has changed because I didn't think that he would be one of the people that changed. When he thought that the Klan will go after him he ran away which was good and bad for him. Good because he isn't going to be killed (if he was going to be). Bad because now people think that he is the person who tried to kill Esther's dad when really he didn't. I think that it might be Harvey who did it because the Klan has changed him, and he wants to kill Leanora and probably her dad.

But then he saw what it really was like and he stopped helping them. Then Harvey gave him the poison and said if he doesn't do it the Klan will hunt him down, so Merlin runs away. Then the detective blames the shooting on Merlin. Will he come back and get arrested, or will they find a different shooter? What do you think?
i want to talk about merlin van tornhout. in the beginning he is all like YES YES YES kkk good they can get rid of all the african americans and any of the different people. now he is like i don't think that they should be here any more. also he might be thinking i didn't know that they were going to kill them i thought they were just keep them out of the country. but no they are killing them so they never com back. what do you guys think about merlin? was it a good choice for him to not put that rat poisin in the sutter's well? or should he just run away from the country.

And then when the klan asked if they could use the town hall for the meeting, and he said,"Why shouldn't they." Then he started to sound good again because he said, " If Leopold had not dropped his spectacles, if the spectacles had not been so uncommon, they would have gotten away with it. They would have gotten away with murder." But later he is complaining about working with blacks. What do you think. Is he good or bad.
i want to talk about the part where jerry the dog got shot why did the klan kill the dog because she is jewish and she was just saying that the dog whent away and whent in a long sleep i think it is cool that the author let us hear the way ester though it happpen llike when they she said the dog fell asleep ensted of the dog just dieing why do you think they killed the dog?
