  1. It is important that people see others based on their experiences and character, rather than categorizing them based on appearance. Matt de la Pena, author of Milo Imagines the World, features a boy named Milo who is on his way to meet his mother in prison. He uses drawings to make the trip more boring, which helps to show Milo’s character. On the subway, Milo meets another boy who seems different from Milo, but we soon find out that they are a lot more alike than he thought. The author uses this story to teach the readers that people may look different, but they can be going through the same situations. Peña used authors’ crafts: multiple perspectives, the reader knowing more than the main character, and revealing actions.

The first technique the other uses to portray the theme is when Milo first meets the boy on the subway. He describes him as some perfect, rich child. “His hair is a perfect part, and there’s not a single scuff on his bright white Nikes.” Milo thought there was no way that a kid that looks like that could have a mom and jail, and be similar to Milo. The author includes this to show how different people can seem, but still be similar in more ways than you would think of on looks alone.

Another craft the author uses is the reader knowing more than the main character. Throughout the story, Milo sees the boy with him a lot, as if they were going to the same place. Milo thinks it is just some coincidence that they are together. As you read the story, you start to get the idea that Milo and the boy are both going to the same place. The author does this to show a sense that things are different from an outside perspective and that the boy is like MIlo.

The last way the author supports the theme occurs at the end of the story. Milo is seen hugging his mom in the visiting room. What Milo doesn’t see is the boy sitting at a table talking to his mom. This illustration plays a big part in portraying the theme of the story. It shows the reader how Milo and the boy both see their mothers in jail, even though they look very different from each other. However, it could be said that the effect of Milo seeing his mother is portraying a theme of family. This fails to take into account the fact that both Milo and the boy are seeing their parents, and throughout the story, Milo is talking about how different they are.

Matt de la Pena, author of Milo Imagines the World, created the overall effect of showing readers that judging people by their personality is better than their looks using multiple perspectives, the reader knows more than the character, and revealing actions. As readers of this work, we can see that thinking deeper about others and trying to understand who they are and what they are going through is important for kids, teenagers, and even adults.

  2. All human beings need to realize one thing can change your life forever. We all want to have a perfectly normal and fine life. In the book “ Before The Ever After”, by Jacqueline Woodson, the readers see what CTE does to someone. This is shown because throughout the story Zj has it rough all because of his dad's “sickness” which is CTE. Something like - in Before the Ever After the author uses character actions, character change, and inner thinking to show what CTE does to someone.

In the book Woods uses the author's craft move of character actions. She first shows Z’js actions with him writing all these songs for his dad. These songs are no ordinary songs, they used to bring him and his dad together before his dad got “sick” with CTE. While reading the story the reader saw that Jacqueline made sure to put the dad's actions in. Starting with him yelling at Zj and his friends. The Dad said “ Who are these boys, anyway? He said, frowning at Ollie, Darry, and Daniel, who he'd known practically forever.” This shows that his “ sickness” was not only getting to his body but now his memory. Although it could be said that the effect of Before The Ever After is Family. This fails to take into account the fact that this family has to deal with the dad having CTE. A reader might believe that the overall effect of Before The Ever After is family while that may be true for that reader, the overall effect has to be what CTE does to someone because the dad has CTE and it causes the change in the character's actions, how the character changes, and how Zj inner thoughts change.

One oblivious author's craft technique in the book was character change. The author of “ Before the Ever After” used the dad to show the character change. The dad was all fine in the beginning but once he got sick he was losing his memory and having a headache that kept the whole house up at night. This connects with the overall effect because it is showing how the build-up of tau protein is getting to him. Jacqueline is also showing the reader how the son has changed. She did this by his realization of the whole situation, with his dad not ever going to be the same. This is part of the effect because without the tau build up Zj would have a “normal” life again.

A final craft move the author used is inner thinking. The inner thinking of Zj is shown by his feelings on his dad not being right. He is feeling constant worry about this, not only that but he is being woken up in the middle of the night by his dad yelling because of how bad the headache is. In his head, it has got to be a mess. He has to keep up with his school life but then comes home to his dad in almost constant pain. The reader thinks that he doesn't show his family what he is thinking. The poem “When it Feels Like the Whole World is Screaming” shows Zj's real feelings. The quote was “The cops came to our house last night because somebody complained about my daddy. I don't know who, though. Sometimes it feels like the whole world is screaming”. This connects with it all because it shows Zjs real feelings and connects to the overall effect.

Jacqueline Woodson, author of Before the Ever After, created the overall effect of what CTE does to someone using character actions, character change, and inner thinking. As readers of this work, we can see that if you show that you have this great amazing life doesn't mean that it is true.

  3. In “The Poet X”, Elizabeth Acevedo uses inner thinking, description, and character actions to show to overall effect: Be your own individual self when figuring out who you are as a person. They show this through how the main character, Xiomara Batista, deals with hard issues, how she describes her relationships as well as how Mamis actions affect Xio.

Throughout the whole novel, Xiomara writes in the book as if it was the diary her twin brother, Xavier, gave to her. He did this because he thought it would help Xio express herself more since she doesn’t usually talk as much. “Late into the night I write and the pages of my notebook swell from all the words I’ve pressed onto them. It almost feels like the more I bruise the page the quicker something inside me heals.” Since then, she has been journaling, writing down her poems. This shows how Acevedo showed inner thinking. In some parts of the story, Xio writes down some problems she has been trying to cope with. “When your body takes up more room than your voice you are always the target of well-aimed rumors, which is why I let knuckles talk for me. Which is why I learned to shrug when my name was replaced by insults. I’ve forced my skin just as thick as I am.” Once again, this conveys that the author used inner thinking all over the novel.

Elizabeth shows description by how Xiomara details her connections with others through similes, metaphors and repetition. She divulges, “Their gazes and words are heavy with all the things they want you to be. It is ungrateful to feel like a burden. It is ungrateful to resent my own birth. I know that Twin and I are miracles. Aren’t we reminded every single day?” Xiomara is bulky, headstrong, rebellious, and eager to explore all that life has to offer. On the other hand, Xavier is scrawny, quiet, faithfull, and obedient to Mamis wishes. However, they still love one another in a way they show they care for eachother–Xiomara calls him twin and sees the nickname as proof that they will always be a pair. This is interpreted as creating a craft move of empathy; yet, it clearly created a craft move of description because Xiomara describes her relationship with her twin.

Lastly, Acevedo displays character actions between mostly Mami and Xiomara. Mami was and is always hard on Xio while she cherishes Xavier. Not only that, but Xiomara feels her mother forcing her to accept being catholic, which results her to become rebellious and to challenge Mamis authorities. Due to this, Xiomara knows when she is in trouble when Mami speaks quickly in Spanish or to scold her by stating “Mira, Muchacha.. (Translation: Look, girl)”. With that, Mami also strictly controls where Xiomara goes or hangs out with. Although that doesn’t stop Xiomara from sneaking behind her mothers back to build a relationship with a boy in her class, Aman. “I can’t remember the last time people were silent while I spoke, actually listening. Note since Aman.” Sadly, they break ties when he doesn’t stick up for Xio when some boys taunt her. In spite of that, she reaches out for him for comfort a month after Mami found, read, and burns Xiomara’s poetry notebook. On account of her mothers actions, Xio soon realizes that she doesn’t need her journal in order to feel like, or know, who she truly is as an individual being.

In conclusion, Elizabeth Acevedo, author of “The Poet X”, created the overall effect of finding out who you are as a person by using description, inner thinking and character actions. First, Acevedo showed description of the bond between X and twin. Next, the craft move of inner thinking was used by how Xiomara explained her thoughts and feelings through poems. Finally Elizabeth employed character actions to show how hard Mami was on Xiomara but ended up showing a new point of view on Xios way to live.

  4. All human beings deserve to be loved after a lot of bad stuff has happened in their life before. We all want to be loved and have someone who is always there for us whenever we need someone for us. In the book “Until Friday Night”, by Abbi Glines the readers see that they help each other go through major losses in their lives and fall in love during that. Maggie had witnessed her father murder her mother and West has been watching his father slowly die from cancer. Maggie had decided to be mute after witnessing what she had seen and West had decided that he could trust her enough to tell her what he had been going through. In “Until Friday Night”, Abbi Glines uses Symbolism and multiple points of view to show that even after everything bad we all deserve to be loved.

The first way the author shows the theme that we can be loved even though bad things have happened to us is by using symbols. One of the main symbols is the field where the field parties are held. The Field is where Maggie and West first met. It is where they had first kissed, and it is where Maggie had fallen in love with West. It is also where they had gotten engaged. The field has always been important to both of them with either friends or family going there. When bad stuff was happening that was where West would go. While everything was happening, West was dealing with the loss of his dad and Maggie was dealing with talking for the first time after two years of not talking. Maggie was helping West while he was helping her. Clearly, this is a very important symbol because it is where everything has happened to them.

Glines used multiple points of view to show what was happening to both characters. We had been able to know how they had felt, what they had been thinking, and what was going on in their life. We were able to understand what was going on better by knowing what was going on with both of the characters. By using multiple points of view, Glines was making sure her readers were able to understand and follow along better with the book. Abbi Glines, the author of “Until Friday Night”, created the overall effect being, that everyone deserves to feel loved even if bad stuff happens in life using symbolism and multiple points of view. First Glines used symbolism by using the field as an important symbol. it were a lot of important things that happened in their relationship. Next, she used multiple perspectives by going back and forth between Maggie and West. it allowed us to know what they were both going there, thinking, and feeling. By doing this, Glines allowed us to know that it is important to know that even though bad things have happened to us, we can still be loved.

  5. Violence affects everyone physically and mentally. In Yummy by Randy Duburke Yummy, this short character has a very hard life with his family. Yummy killed a girl and the citizens hated him. Every Time they saw him they would call 911. Yummy was alone with no one around him. He was sad and afraid of what to do with his life. He then joined a gang so he would not be alone. Yummy got in the car with his gang. When they got out of the car the gangster friend got out again and to Yummys head BAM Bam and Bam. Yummy was shot. The gangster friends got caught the next morning and Yummy was laying in his casket with his teddy bear and everyone was astonished. In Yummy, Randy Duburke, uses the character's actions, symbolism, and inner thinking with a sense of death and sadness.
The first craft move that the author used to create a sense of death and sadness was the character's actions. We first see this with Yummy and how he does his actions. The first action is when he kills a girl and then Yummy runs away. Every time he was alone with no one around he would always cry and be sad because he did not know what to do with his life. Another Action is If he went to the city people would call 911 since he killed a girl. And he did all they did was yell and call 911. His actions were not knowing what to do except joining a gang. The character action of Yummy was him wanting to get picked up by his grandma But Yummy went with his gang instead. They were in the car and then after They walked into a tunnel and Yummy got shot. The families and citizens were flabbergasted. They were all sad and saw Yummy in his Casket with his teddy bear.
Another craft move is that Yummy and the book use symbolism. The readers know this because the pictures it show what happens. The symbolism is in the graphics and pages because there is death on 1 page and a bunch of the other pages are sadness and people wanting a reason. The pictures also show death on one page and in the other page there is a sadness which shows how it goes down. The symbolism is death and sadness and those pages are where it began. Some more symbolism is how the death of Yummy is a symbol because he was shown a lot and the symbol for Yummy could mean Sadness. The gang could mean Death because they killed Yummy in the end.

A final way that the effect of death and sadness was created was through the use of inner thoughts. At the end of the story, the readers are left to wonder why the gang shot him. In the inner thoughts, he always thinks about what he should do such as the inner thinking of Yummy being lonely and wanting to not kill the girl and regretting it. His next inner thoughts are why and what he should do and how he could handle things because he knows the city hates him. His thoughts are what should I do or should I join a gang? Through the use of this craft move the author clearly shows us how sadness and death work in a bad neighborhood.
Randy Duburke of Yummy Created the overall effect of sadness and death using Character actions, symbolism, and inner thoughts. First Duburke Showed actions Of shooting people and crying. The actions of Yummy made him get shot in the end. Although it could be said that the effect of Yummy is death and sadness. This fails to take into account the fact that mental and physical health is part of it too. A reader might believe that the overall effect of Yummy is mental and physical health. While that may be true for that reader, the overall effect has to be sadness and death because it has more of it in the page and has it in the graphics. Next, the craft move of symbolism was used. The symbolism is represented in the graphics because one page is death and another page is sadness. They show it on the pages. Finally, Randy Duburke employed inner thoughts and thinking. The inner thinking is about yummy all alone and he thinks what he should do in his mind. Randy Duburke successfully used character actions, symbolism, and inner thoughts to make the reader feel death and sadness in the book.

  6. In “To Kill a Mockingbird.” Harper Lee used many symbols to show how racial injustice effects people. Set in the 1930s, in the Country of Maycomb, Alabama there is a mix of white, black, rich, and poor people. The main characters in this story are Atticus a radical lawyer and father to Jem a 12-year-old boy, an 8-year-old girl named Scout, and their best friend Dill. In the book, we go through a year in Dill, Scout, and Jem's life retold by Scout as an adult, as they try to get the town's recluse, Arthur Radley, or as everyone calls him “Boo” to come out of his house. All the charters in the book believe that Boo is a monster and “scary” because they never see him and who he truly is. However, at the end of the book, we see that he is a good person who is just misunderstood and as Souct puts it “doesn't want to come out.”

In this book, the author touches on many topics of racism like a trial with a white woman claiming that a black man raped her, but her white father Bob Ewell assaulted her. In this trial, a black man named Tom Robinson was convicted of the crime Atticus, his lawyer proved his innocence, but he was still convicted of the crime.

The first symbol that shows the effect of the story is the mockingbird and Boo Radley. Jem and Scout throughout the whole story want to get Boo Radley to come out of his house. The siblings are under the impression that Boo is a scary threat, however at the end of the book the reader finds out that Boo was truly innocent, making him symbolize the Mockingbird, as mockingbirds are usually portrayed as innocent. In the end scene of the book, Jem and Scout are walking home, in the dark after a play at school. They start to hear heavy footsteps. When the footsteps find them a man starts to attack them and tries to kill them. During the attack, Jem falls unconscious and Scout tries to help him and get away herself. Later in the book we find out that the man that tried to kill the siblings was Bob Ewell, the man that wanted to hurt Atticus for knowing he raped his daughter.

After the fight, Atticus and the Sharif of Maycomb talk about what happened. As they were talking Sharif told Atticus that Bob had fallen on his knife, that he had to kill the children and killed himself. At this point in the book we find out that Boo was the one that killed Bob, to save the children. From this scene in the book, it is clear to the reader that Boo is truly innocent and a good person. This symbolizes the way that white people and people in general judge African American people without even knowing them. Boo being a recluse and having some mental problems is a metaphor for how black people in the 1930s were treated because it lets the reader convey and make connections to innocent people.

The next symbol element that the author used to sport the effect in “To Kill a Mockingbird” was Maycomb the town that characters live in. Maycomb is used as a metaphor for the real world. The town is referred to as a sleepy and safe town, Atticus even refers to the town as having “The safest people in the world.” The reader can infer that this symbol shows Lee wanted to show that white people in the world feel that nothing bad could ever happen to them. The white people, also are blind to all the ways they are racist to the black people in their town. However, in the book, the reader can see that the bad things that happen to black people do effects the lives of white people.

  7. The third symbol in this book is the children's book that Atticus reads Scout at the very end of the book after Boo Radley killed Bob Ewell and saved her and her brother's lives. This book is called “The Gray Ghost,” it has a character that is deemed to be mean and scary, but at the of the book, the character is kind and helpful. A quote that shows this is said by Scout, “Atticus when they finally say him he wasn't scary at all, he was real nice.” This story is a symbol of the storyline of Boo Radley in “To Kill a Mockingbird.” Through this symbol, Lee used an easy-to-understand, children's book to help the reader better understand what Boo Radley had shown us. This symbol helps the reader to better understand the whole book.

Harper Lee used various symbols and metaphors throughout the book to portray the e impact of racism and racial injustice on society. These literary elements are used to convey the message of the effect in this book. Another reader could feel that the effect of this book is having the courage to fight for what is right. A reader could see this in the ways Atticus protects the innocent even when his life could be in danger. Overall, the novel gives a powerful message about racism and the importance of building a safer and healthier society.

  8. What do you do with an idea is a story by Kobi Yamada, and Mae Besom. This story takes place with the little kid and the egg because the little kid saw this egg, and wanted to go by it but he didn't want to get bullied about it. Then he saw the egg again and found out he was more happy with the egg so they became friends.

Yamada is showing character change. Yamada shows character change because the little boy saw this egg all alone but then just turned back around and kept walking. The egg started to follow the little boy and the little boy noticed but did want to do anything because he was too worried about what others would think. He hid the egg and didn't talk about it because he wanted to make it seem like everything was ok. When he saw the egg again he felt happy and better when she saw the egg. The egg just kept on following him so they became friends. All thought you might think this is empathy, I think this might be you should always follow your path, because when he followed what he wanted to do he got more friends and was hanging out with the egg a lot more and didnt care what people thought anymore.

Yamada is showing symbols. The symbols represent the egg and the little boy. The little boy saw this egg with a crown, and wanted to go by it but he didn't want to get made fun of because he was hanging with an egg. He didn't really care what people thought of him being friends with the egg anymore. When they were walking around he hatched, and turned into a bird and the little kids were happy and it felt like a miracle to him.

Yamada shows images. The images represent what kind of things they do. One image would be the egg, and the animals because he feels safe with them because he can trust them and follow everyone around without feeling like he's going to be judged by others. They are all friends with each other and he feels safe because he knows he won't get judged by them. Another image is when the egg becomes a bird. When the egg becomes a bird he is amazed. He is amazed that he became a bird because he was following his path with the egg and the egg magically hatched.

Kobi Yamada, is the author of the book What Do You Do With An Idea?, created the overall effect of always following your path using character change, symbols and images. First, Yamada showed affect with character change because he saw this egg walking and wanted to go by the egg but he thought he was going to get judged because he was hanging out with an egg. Next the craft move of symbols was used. One symbol was the egg and little boy because the little boy saw the egg with the crown on its head and wanted to go by the egg but didn't want to get made fun of. Finally, Yamada employed images. He used images because he knew he could feel safe around the egg and the animals because he could trust them and follow them without feeling judged. Yamada successfully used character actions, symbols, and images to make the reader feel like he wasn't going to get bullied.

  9. All human beings need to finding happiness even in times of sadness we all want to be a loving family rather than fighting. White Bird is about Saraś experience during WW2 as a Jewish person. She tells her grandson, Julian about her experience.. In the book White Bird, by R.J Palacio, the readers see you need multiple points of view, flashbacks, and symbolism to show happiness can happen even in sad times.

One way that Palacio shows happiness in the story is through the authorś craft, flashbacks. The flashback shows happiness even through the toughest times some of times in the story. It shows in the barn when Sara, the grandma, and Julien and his family sees how she is happy. The part that showed the most happiness there was a part in my story were she was having her birthday with the people she trusts; they had cake. This is the reason why this is the most happiest part, because rather than worrying and being sad; they have laughter and had a good time together like a family.

Another way that Palacio shows happiness is through the authorś craft multiple point of view. The story is told in her view chapter one all the way to the last chapter about Grandmaś view of the war. The story shows that how the Grandma back then survived the WW2 as a Jew .It also shown in the grandson view very begging to very end in the grandson point of view and grandma´s point of view. In present day we see the grandson Julien talking to grandma Sara on the phone.

Finally another way that Palacio shows happiness is through the symbol of the white bird. The reader sees the bird whenever she is feeling down, but she imagines herself as a bird and being free to find happiness. When Sara is in the barn, there is a crack in the window, that she can see out of. Whenever she sees the whitebird, she imagines being the bird and see whatever the bird is seeing. When Julian was caught by the Nazis she saw what happened through the birdś eyes; in present day you see her tear.

R.J Palacio, author of White Bird, created the overall effect of White Bird using flashbacks, multiple views, and symbolism. As readers of this work, we can see that you can see she uses multiple view. Which she uses two views in the story. And flashbacks to see the feeling of the character. Also through the final craft of symbolism. In the story.R.J Palacio, author of White Bird, created the overall effect of happiness using Flashbacks,Multiple points of view and symbolism. Finally, Palacio employed multiple view. Palacio successfully used Flashbacks,Multiple views, and First person to make the reader feel happiness.

  10. The book The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian is a story by Sherman Alexie, who talks about a boy named Junior who suffered from a long-term brain condition at a young age called congenital hydrocephalus. In this book, the author uses: Inner thinking, Tone, and flashbacks/flashforwards to show you how to build a very harsh, and sad reality. Junior is a Native American who lives on a reservation named Spokane near Wellpinit, Washington. His family was impoverished and his dad was a drunk with a failed dream along with his mother and sister. His only friend had been rowdy who wasn’t exactly the best influence, but no one was in his life.

The author first uses the main character's inner thoughts to build the mood by having not one family death but two. First, his grandma was walking along, and out of nowhere, a drunk driver came and severely injured her. Her last dying words had been, “Forgive him” Junior at the time was in a state of confusion in his mind wondering how after all the good she did something like this was allowed to happen to her. Even worse, After his second match against Rowdy's team his sister was reported dead by a fire. He laughed, he couldn’t stop laughing, The readers could see he was going crazy even though the author said so, I mean how who could keep themselves together after two unheard-of family deaths?

The author then uses tone to influence the idea of how to build a very harsh, and sad reality. The main character likes to talk a lot about “personal topics” that probably aren’t mentioned in other stories. This has readers think about reality and how kids act and feel to help us understand the goal and overall plot of the story. Adults are even drunks and have bad attitudes that you might see in real life and real emotions like Mr. P who instead punished juniJuniorve a heartfelt talk to him about having to escape this sad reservation and pursue your dreams and not let anyone push you down like years of history to natives. Now some may argue that the character's motivation is the goal the author is going towards but the readers can see building a harsh reality because there isn’t a dream he talks about but more or less trying to survive.

The author uses flashbacks and forwards to help realize how to build a very harsh, sad reality. Juniors had lots of flashbacks. One example is when he was thinking about when he and Rowdy were nine. It was a super hot day and they needed to cool off so they went to Turtle Lake and they had gotten there they climbed a very high tree and saw for miles upon miles and they had climbed and truly looked upon what they had. This might have been Junior favorite moment, in this moment junior, had felt alive, but this would probably be the only moment he could escape reality like this. The author was trying to point out the hard reality of life at this moment. Really because they were only two individuals

Sherman Alexie, the author of The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian, created the overall effect of building a very harsh, sad reality using Inner thoughts, Tone, and flashbacks/forwards. First, Alexie showed Building a very harsh, sad reality with Inner thinking by having Junior think about his pat with his sister and grandma. Then it shows him being confused with emotions wondering how good people died suddenly. Next, the craft move of building a very harsh, sad reality, Tone, was mainly used by teachers and the kids because the author makes it unique. After all, it is how people talk. He even shows a very heavy-hearted screen with Mr. P giving his heart out to Junior. Lastly, Alexie used flashbacks/forwards to build the goal by showing us a scene back from his childhood when he was nine years old. He and Rowdy had climbed a super big tree and had reflected on what they had and how life was going to be the same no matter what they did because they were just two individuals.

  11. Everyone should feel like they are cared for and appreciated in some way. In the book Big by Vashti Harrison, a little girl struggles because everyone calls her names and makes fun of her. The author uses imagery, inner thinking, and symbolism to show that everyone should feel cared for and appreciated somehow.

The girl in the story big grows up to be very smart but she also grows to be very big. Everyone thinks it is unusual kinda unpleasant that she is so big compared to all the others, so they start to make comments that start to bring her down. The girl got more and more upset as time passed. Eventually, she got so upset she sat in her puddle of tears and started to think about the words and sounds people made at her. She thought long and hard about what they said and then picked up all of the bad words that brought her down then she soaked up all her tears in her puddle. Eventually, she took all of the words and sounds and took them back to the people who gave them.

There is quite a bit of imagery in this book that Harrison the author has put in this book. There is a moment in this book where the little girl sits in her puddle of tears, and she starts to pick up all of the mean words that other people tell her. People who kinda had the same problem have probably felt the way she felt. People want to feel like they are cared for and appreciated and when they don't they feel unwanted, and it just brings them down.

In this book, we see the girl always wearing a ballet outfit it seems like it gives her confidence and it also seems like it shows her mood. At the start of the story, she is wearing a nice baby pink and purple colored ballet outfit which shows that she is happy, as she sits in her puddle of tears while crying her ballet outfit is dark blue and black color. It seemed very depressing, sad, and lonely. Lastly, at the end, her outfit went back to pink and purple because she started to gain her confidence back.

The author of the book created the overall effect that everyone should feel cared for and appreciated in some way using inner thinking, imagery, and symbolism. First, they used inner thinking to show how the little girl felt when she was getting bullied. Then, they used imagery to show how people might feel if you bring them down by making fun of them or even bullying them. Lastly, they used symbolism to show how the dress showed her emotions. That's how the author shows why everyone should feel cared for and appreciated in some way.

  12. In many dystopian books there is suspense. This is mostly due to the fact they are set in different settings or times that so many things are unknown to the reader. In the book The Fear by Charlie Higson, there are a lot of diverse groups of kids attempting to survive. The book is set in a place where a disease took over almost everyone sixteen and older. Since the disease makes people not look or act like people, the kids call them names like strangers or sickos. One way Higson shows suspense is by using multiple plot lines. Charlie Higson used a lot of description during the time of writing this book which is one other way the author created the effect of suspense. Another way the author shows suspense is by using symbolism. The adults are one symbol in the book representing the unknown. In The Fear, Charlie Higson uses multiple plot lines, description, and symbolism to show suspense.

First, the author shows suspense in their description. Many times the author describes the setting so much that readers are too impatient to see what happens next. For example,”She waited for the children to go past. Squatting down by the window in the empty shop. Feeling the tension among the others. They were hungry and hurting,”(The Fear, page 249) Higson describes this one moment for almost two pages. A second piece of evidence is at the end of the chapter which states the thoughts of the person,”Wait until the time was right,”(The Fear, page 250). This could be interpreted as creating an effect of empathy to a reader, however, Higson is showing an overall effect of suspense because of the length of the description and allowing the readers to see the thoughts of this person. Sometimes Charlie Higson describes an adult standing still for a minute also showing the reader suspense. The description in the book shows suspense because all the details keep the readers waiting to see what will happen next.

Secondly, Charlie Higson shows suspense by using multiple plot lines. There are multiple instances where the author ends the chapter at an intense moment and changes to a different group of people. One time for example,”There were more strangers coming from the south, and once again the kids were running,”(The Fear, page 274) This sentence was at the end of a chapter when the kids had seemed to get away from the adults but had found more of them. In the next chapter, there was a different group of people shown talking casually. Multiple plot lines create suspense because Higson often ends a chapter with people running away or going into an unknown area.

Finally, Higson shows suspense by using symbolism. In The Fear, one symbol is the adults which symbolize the unknown. Charlie Higson shows the adults as mysterious since the kids and readers hardly know anything about them. The kids are beginning to experiment on the adults and find more about them so they can figure out if the adults can be cured. One of the characters said,”’We’re trying to find out about the disease. Those three in there are guinea pigs. They’ve lived much longer than any of the others we’ve caught,’”(The Fear, page 279) They haven’t found too much so this keeps the readers waiting to see what become of these experiments. The symbolism in the book shows suspense because there isn’t much known about the adults.

Charlie Higson, the author of The Fear, created the overall effect of suspense using multiple plot lines, description, and symbolism. First, Higson showed description. The author used description to create suspense by giving almost every detail that was possible to be created. Next, the craft move of multiple plot lines was used. This creates the effect of suspense by cutting scenes off with intense moments. Finally, Charlie Higson employed symbolism. The adults can resemble the unknown which also creates the effect of suspense. Charlie Higson successfully used description, multiple plot lines, and symbolism to make the reader feel suspense.

  13. Any person who has had an experience of their own knows how to feel empathy; they can use that experience and compare it to others. In the book “To Kill A Mockingbird”, by Harper Lee, readers see multiple people, including children, being misunderstood. The book follows two children named Scout and Jem Finch, who are attacked by a man named Bob Ewell after their father acts as a lawyer to a black man, named Tom Robinson, against Bob. When they are assaulted, the town shut in, Boo Radley, defends against Bob Ewell and protects the children. In “To Kill A Mockingbird”, Lee uses tone, symbolism, and a first person narrator in order to stir empathy in the readers.

Primarily, the tone of “To Kill A Mockingbird” helps to stir empathy. At the end of Tom Robinson’s court case, the author sets a sad tone by describing everyone in the jury saying that he is guilty, although Tom’s case was much stronger than the opposition’s. This assists in making the reader feel sorrowful for Tom because of his biased trial. Lee also set a fearful tone near the end of the book. “‘Run, Scout! Run! Run!” Jem screamed. I took one giant step and found myself reeling: my arms useless, in the dark, I could not keep my balance. “Jem, Jem, help me, Jem!” This scene affected the readers and made them fear for Scout and Jem when they were assaulted by Bob Ewell. Maybe the author had Scout not knowing what was going on in order to make the tone more frightening.

Next, Lee imposed a first person narrator to aid in stirring empathy. The first person narrator assists in showing precisely how the character is feeling, specifically in parts when Scout is in school, and is forced to deal with her teacher that treats her scornfully. The first person narrator being a young child also helps to show exactly how the character feels, because children are less accustomed to hiding their emotions. This constructs it to be simpler for readers to empathize with Scout and the other characters.

Finally, Lee used symbolism to assist the overall effect of stirring empathy. Boo Radley symbolizes that somebody can be a good person no matter their past. When he saves Scout and Jem from Bob Ewell, the readers feel empathy for him wanting to make up for his past mistakes. The author also used Tom Robinson to symbolize that some people never did anything wrong; They simply were blamed because of prejudice. This allows people to understand how it feels to be accused of something you never did. Some people may also know how it feels already.

In conclusion, Harper Lee, author of “To Kill A Mockingbird”, created the overall effect of stirring empathy using tone, symbolism, and a first person perspective. First, Lee stirred empathy with tone, by setting both a sad tone, and a fearful one. This was in order to get readers to feel a similar way to the characters. Next, the craft move of symbolism was used. The multiple symbols used, such as Boo Radley or Tom Robinson, helped to stir empathy. Lastly, Harper Lee used a first person narrator. This assisted readers in feeling empathy for the main character, Scout. This shows that Lee successfully used tone, symbolism, and a first person narrator to make the reader feel empathy for the characters in the story.

  14. Introduction
All human beings need to protect someone when they are innocent. We all want to know that someone will have our back when someone is accusing you of something that you didn’t do or don't deserve to be punished for. In the book, “To Kill a Mockingbird,” by Harper Lee the readers see many events in the story that change people. Primarily a girl named Scout, Scout is the person who is telling this story and you get to know how these events affected her and how she felt during this time. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee uses Symbolism, Tone, and 1st person narrative to create the overall effect of Innocence.
    Symbolism
In this story Boo Radley is the biggest symbol. This is because a man named Bob Ewell tries to kill Scout and Jem. After Boo finds out about this he saves them by killing Bob. Since Boo did in fact kill someone he had to go to court. Although due to his heroic actions and the help of some of his friends they helped him plead innocent. They did this by telling the jury that Mr. Ewell fell onto the knife rather than stabbing Bob. Everyone agreed to help Boo because having to get charged with murder would be like killing a mockingbird; punished for doing nothing truly wrong. That is exactly why Boo Radley symbolizes innocence.
    Tone
The tone of a book can change the way a situation is interpreted. Harper Lee included many moments of the story with a suspenseful tone. For example, when Scout was in the courtroom for Tom’s case the author included more detail than she normally would have. She did this so the readers would be on the edge of their seat wanting to know the jury’s final verdict. The jury spent a lot of time discussing whether this man was innocent or guilty. The rest of the courtroom was innocent on what the verdict would be concluded as. In this part of the story Lee included a lot of inner thoughts that was going through scouts mind telling us how she felt and how her emotions changed
    1st person narrator
Throughout this story there is only one narrator whose name is Scout and during this story you get to know all of the thoughts and emotions that Scout has. Scout is a 6 year old girl in the beginning of the book. However this book is within a two year span and by the time the book ends she is eight years old, but she is a very different person. It starts as her being a regular girl who lives an average life. Although soon everything changes when all of these crazy events happen to her. For example, her dad is the lawyer of a man who is accused of abusing a young woman, Atticus has to kill a rabid dog in front of her, and a man by the name Bob Ewell wants to kill her. Obviously these events will forever change you. The author shows the readers how this affected Scout and shows her loss of innocence. From the beginning to the end the Lee does a great job of going into detail about how Scout changes and included great character development
    Conclusion
Harper Lee the author of to Kill a Mockingbird created the overall effect of innocence by using symbolism, tone, and 1st person narrative. First, Lee showed symbolism by Boo radley symbolizing a mockingbird. After saving a young girls life and not being charged with murder. Next, the craft move of tone was used. This was seen in the courtroom when the jury was taking an extended amount of time to determine if he was guilty or not. Finally, Harper Lee employed 1st person narrative. She did this by making the perspective of the story from a child and shows how she changes throughout the whole story. Harper Lee successfully used symbolism, tone, and 1st person narrative to make the reader understand that you need to protect someone when they are innocent.

  15. All humans beings need to have toward one another. We all want to be happy. In the book, Hey Little Ant, by Phillip Hoose. In the book the reader see how empathy is important. In the book, a boy tries to squish an ant and the ant tries to stop him and gives him reason why. In the book, Hey Little Ant, Hoose uses dialogue, multiple points of view, and character actions to show how everyone should have empathy for one another.

An Authorś crafter move that the author uses is dialogue. The dialogue in the book sows empire for the ant in the story.. The ant is taking to the boy and the boy is trying to find reasons to crush the ant. The ant is then telling the boy reasons that they are similar and that he should not value the ants life the same everyone else. By the end of the story the boy thinks more of the ant and he realizes that all living creatures can feel things to.

Another authorś move is multiple points of view. The story is told by the point of view of the ant and the boy. For the reader who is talking the author uses a label, Kid or Ant. The point of view of the ant is that the boy should spare his life. The boyś point of view is that he should squish the ant for fun.

Finally the author uses character actions to show empathy. In one part of the story, the bully said, hey ¨you don't have a family,¨ then the ant said that he does have a family that he is providing for. This shows the reader that they are same and that the boy should not value his life any less than the ants.

Phillip Hoose, author of Hey Little Ant, created the overall effect of empathy using dialogue, character action, and point of view. First, Hoose shows empathy with dialogue. The boy in the story tries to squish the ant. Next the craft move of point of view was used. The author shows views of both the ant and boy. Finally, Hoose employed point of view of both the boy and the ant. The author successfully used dialogue, character actions, and point of view to make the reader feel empathy towards everyone.

  16. It is important that everyone can feel safe and protected. In twilight : eclipse by Stephenie Meyer, a human girl meets a vampire boy and his family. In doing this, they meet another vampire named victoria who is dead set on killing the main character, Bella. In this book, we recognize victoria's schemes as the author is setting up suspense. The vampire family and a werewolf pack help each other to defeat the evil vampire in order to keep bella safe. In Twilight : Eclipse, Stephanie Meyer uses 1st person narrator, flashbacks, and character actions to create suspense, and to get the readers predicting.
Stephanie Meyer uses the 1st person narrator to get readers predicting by limiting the characters knowledge. She also uses character actions to create suspense by making the characters act tense, or even uncomfortable. The author also uses flashbacks to get us predicting by making one of the other main characters’ backstory. She does this by making us predict that what happened in his backstory, will repeat itself onto the main characters. Meyer uses character actions to create suspense by making an unknown vampire break into the main characters house.
It might seem like the author is trying to create an effect of setting up a problem, or even raising the stakes a bit, however that is clearly not what she is trying to do. This is because of the way she created the plotline. She set up a situation in which it would start off normal, and then she started creating situations that would build suspense and get the readers predicting.
Stephanie Meyer, author of Twilight : Eclipse, created the overall effect of suspense, and getting the reader's predicting by using 1st person narrator, Flashbacks, and character actions. First, Meyer showed suspense with character actions by making the characters act tense or uncomfortable. She did this by making the characters act stiff or, ridgid. She got the readers predicting by using the 1st person narrators limited knowledge against them. She did this by creating a situation where the main character would have no clue whats going on in order to create suspense and to get the readers predicting.

  17. My name is betty and I will be talking about the book Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up with Me written by Mariko Tamaki and Illustrated by Rosemary Valero-O'Connell. Mariko Tamaki is one of my favorite writers and I was really happy writing this.

The main character in Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up with Me is Frederica Riley or Freddy as everyone calls her that. Her friend's names are Doodle, Buddy, and Eric. She has a girlfriend named Laura. Freddy is trying to get out of a toxic relationship with Laura but she keeps falling for her. doodle takes her to see a physic to see what she could do. The physic tells her she needs to tell Laura that she wants to break up and not the other way. In the end, she builds up enough courage to break up with her and she breaks the cycle.

The theme in the the book is getting out of toxic relationships because Freddy had enough with Laura so she decided to stand up to Laura and tell her that she wants to break up. Although it could be said that courage is the theme I believe it is getting out of toxic relationships because in the story Freddy was being a toxic friend to Doodle by not helping her when she really needed support when she was pregnant and having an abortion. Freddy wasn't there for Doodle because Laura said she was having an emergency but actually Laura just wanted Freddy at her birthday party so she missed going to Doodle's appointment with her.

The book starts out in a school dance introducing the main character and her friends. But in this small scene it also shows Freddy looking for her girlfriend and to find her cheating on her. Freddy a couple of days later her friend Doodle takes her to see a physic. Even though the physic tells her she needs to break up with Laura Freddy falls for Laura again and in doing so she pushes her friends away in the process. Doodle finds out she's pregnant and she decides to ask Freddy if she would come with her to get an abortion, Freddy agrees to go with her. Laura texted Freddy that she was having an emergency so Freddy rushed over to her house to only find out that Laura just wanted her there for her birthday party. Freddy rushed over to the hospital to only find she was too late and wasn't able to see Doodle when she needed her. After Doodle recovered Freddy made up with Doodle and they fixed their friendship. Freddy went over to Laura's house and told her she was a shity girlfriend and she wanted to break up laura couldn't accept this and shouted at Freddy but Freddy just responded with “ Don't be mad “ as she walked away.

I hope this helped you understand the theme of getting out of toxic relationships and how they can be harmful not just to yourself but the people around you. And I hope this essay made you at least want to read the book.

  18. When people are expecting an outcome, there will be an outcome. If it’s good or on the bad side, there will be an outcome. “To Kill a Mockingbird” is a classic story written by Harper Lee. In the story, the reader is observing the lives of “Scout” Jean Louise Finch(6-8) and “Jem” Jeremy Atticus Finch (10-13). The two live their lives in elementary and middle school while facing many challenges. The most engaging part of the book to readers is the court case in which Tom Robinson is accused of illegal activities with a young girl. In this case; Scout and Jem’s father, Atticus Finch, is defending Tom Robinson against Robert Ewell. In the end, the jury rules in favor of Robert Ewell. Continuing, Robert Ewell attempts to kill Scout and Jem but ends up being stopped by the Finches’ neighbor, Mr. Nathan Radley. After the trial, Tom Robinson is killed while trying to escape jail. In “To Kill a Mockingbird”, Lee uses tone, first-person narrative, and dialogue to build suspense in the plot.
One of the techniques that Lee used in “To Kill a Mockingbird” was a first-person narrator. In the story the author uses Scout as the narrator, this allows the reader to learn background information and observe what only Scout is thinking while possibly giving the reader an alternate point of view. A quote that shows how the first perspective point of view is, “I didn’t think so: Atticus was also trying to show, it seemed to me, that Mr .Ewell could have beaten up Mayella.” This quote shows how using a first-person narrator can build suspense. That is, because the reader can infer that Jem thought something while Scout thought otherwise. This means that Lee meant for the reader to be able to expect different outcomes and suspense. When the reader has suspense from a story they can pay attention and learn more lessons about life. Along with the importance of different things.
Another important author craft that Lee used was Dialogue. With all of the dialogue in the book, many opportunities could build suspense. One of the things that dialogue could help with is learning about things like gossip in conversations.. A very large example of how dialogue could build suspense is, “The main one is, if I didn’t I couldn’t hold up my head in town, I couldn’t represent this county in the state legislature.” This example gives extra information for the reader that could build suspense, in the sense that before this moment the reader could interpret Atticus as something different. This builds even more suspense towards the court trial. This could leave one to wonder, however, was there more dialogue before this instance to build suspense toward the court trial?
The last important author craft Lee used was Tone. The reader would probably notice tone during the court case. In the court case the emotion is dreary and still. This is because the case that is taking place is a terrible crime and the jury is taking a very long time to decide. When Harper Lee uses this type of tone it adds suspense to the outcome of the case. Although it could be argued that this example of tone could be interpreted as innocence this however, is not as strong as the tone of suspense.
Harper Lee built suspense by using tone, first-person narrating, and dialogue to build suspense in “To Kill a Mockingbird's” plot. The reader can infer that Lee using a first person narrator built suspense by learning multiple reasons for that. Dialogue was used in the story to build suspense, doing this by using gossip. The last author craft Lee uses is Tone, by changing the tone of the court case, the author built suspense. After all of this it is clear to a reader that Harper Lee was able to build suspense in “To Kill a Mockingbird.”

  19. Part 1
Human beings need to care for others. In the book The Final Four, by Paul Volponi, the readers see the theme of caring for others. The story is about a few different characters who are all at the Final Four, and show their perspectives of the Final Four to show the theme of caring for others. Valponi also shows the actions of the main characters. An example of an action in the Final Four is when Malcolm and MJ got into a fight. For example, Malcolm's life perspective shows the theme because his parents care for him. Another example is when Valponi shows Roko’s personal life. In the Final Four, the author uses perspectives and actions to show the theme.

The first way actions show the theme is when Malcolm talks about his career with Michigan State. Malcolm says “I tried my best for Michigan State and my teammates. I care for Coach Eddie Barker and all those guys.” Volponi included this moment in the book to show that you should care for others. Although, Malcolm didn’t care for his teammates at the start of the book, over time he started to care more about his teammates, which relates to the theme of caring for others.

The second way actions show the theme of caring for others is when Malcolm reveals a tattoo. The tattoo reads “Spartans forever in the Trojan War.” This indicates that Volponi is showing the theme because Malcolm cares enough about his team that he got a tattoo of his basketball team and remembers it. Because his team inspired him since he used to not do favors for other people cause he didn’t care for others. Are other teammates doing this? The author added this into the story to show that he cares for his team and his coaches.

The first way that Aaron’s perspective shows the theme is when his mother is telling him to share the story he has with his teammates. Why does Aaron not want to share the story from his point of view? Is the author trying to show a certain feeling that Aaron has about his past? Aaron’s mom told Aaron “You share a bond with them that I don’t. They need to hear what happened from you.” This shows the theme because his teammates and his mom care about his experience of Hurricane Katrina and all that he went through. It also means that they are there for Aaron and his teammates are supporting him.

The second way that Aaron’s perspective shows the theme is when Aaron is listening to his mom. His mom is saying that she is grateful and optimistic since they got free tickets to the Final Four. Aaron’s mom said, “I'm optimistic, grateful, and bitter all at the same time.” This shows that you should care for others because she is grateful. Because of what she has and that means she is also thankful for what she currently has right now. Instead of what they used to have in Croatia. How many people in Croatia are experiencing this?

The first way that Malcolm's perspective shows the theme is when MJ his former teammate is telling him a quote from X, since Malcolm is named after him. “He said if you don’t stand for something you’ll fall for anything.” What is MJ’s story of getting named after Michael Jordan? Volponi is trying to show the theme in this part of the story because it shows that he is caring for somebody or someone. This could be interpreted as creating a theme of friendship however it is a theme of caring for others because there are more examples of them caring for each other than examples of friendship.

  20. Part 2
The second way that Malcolm's perspective shows the theme is when he is listening to his parents say that when he is a high college prospect his parents ain’t gonna let his career get sabotaged by a gift or a loan. Malcolm’s parents say “We're not going to let anyone sabotage that for a gift, or a loan of a few dollars, not in our lifetime. This is an emotional part of The Final Four because Malcolm is trying to go to the NBA since his family is poor.”This shows the theme because his parent is showing that they are caring for their son and his career. For example, some parents would take a gift that would ruin his career and they wouldn’t care.

Paul Volponi, author of The Final Four, created the theme of the book using actions, and perspectives. First, Volponi showed the theme with perspectives. Volponi used perspectives to show the theme because Malcolm cared for his teammates by getting a tattoo of his team to show support for his team. The Volponi also had Aaron show the theme with perspectives because he and his mom were grateful for what they had. Next, the craft move of actions was used. The Volponi used actions to show the theme because when Malcolm says he cares about his coach and his team. Malcolm also shows the theme when he reveals a new tattoo of the team to show that he cares for the team. Paul Volponi successfully used perspectives and actions to make the reader feel like a human being to cares for others

  21. “To Kill a Mockingbird,” is a classic novel written in 1960 by Harper Lee. It follows the story of two siblings, Jem, 13, and Scout, 10, as they have adventures in their small town of Maycomb, Alabama. Their father, Atticus Finch, is a lawyer defending Tom Robinson, a young black man, in court. In the end, they lose the case, and their family receives a lot of hate for supporting him, and are even targeted by murderers. Bob Ewell is one of the people most opposed to this. He even goes as far as attempting to stab Jem and Scout until their mysterious neighbor, Boo Radley has to step in. Fighting for the defense of the innocent is in our human nature, so when in “To Kill a Mockingbird,” Bob Ewell attacks the innocent children, Boo Radley has to step in. Above all, the theme of this book is innocence, and Lee used symbolism, a first person point of view, and the character’s inner thoughts to prove this. The first main craft move the author used to show empathy for the innocent was symbolism. This was first shown very early on, it was even in the title of the book. Tom Robinson and Boo Radley were both “mockingbirds,” in the sense that they were both innocent, and killing them would be like killing a mockingbird. A quote from Atticus further proves this, saying, “Killing a mockingbird is the worst sin, they are the most innocent animals.” The authorities in Maycomb, their local town, decide not to press any charges against Boo after the murder of Bob Ewell because he was protecting Jem and Scout and was truly innocent. This makes the reader feel like the city of Maycomb is a good place, but readers see in the trial of Tom Robinson that the city of Maycomb is a little biased and maybe not the greatest place to live.

Another craft move was that Lee used was the first person narrator. This story is told through the eyes of Scout, who is 8 years old at the novel's end. Many readers may find the theme of this book to be innocence, though this could be influenced by the fact that Scout has an innocent personality at only 8 years old. As a result, this could affect how the story is told through her eyes and her perspective of the characters.

Although some readers may infer that the main theme of “To Kill a Mockingbird” is suspense, the narration from Scout’s perspective clearly shows a theme of innocence. This is further proven when both Tom Robinson and Boo Radley are innocent, yet convicted of crimes they did not do.

The last craft move that the author used was inner thoughts. The reader can see this through the narrator, Scout, sharing her thoughts during the court case of Tom Robinson. Scout thinks that the case of Tom Robinson against Bob Ewell will be fair due to her innocent nature and not knowing that the jurors will discriminate against Tom. This event connects the theme of innocence to the inner thoughts of Scout.

Harper Lee, the author, created the overall theme and effect of innocence in her book, “To Kill a Mockingbird,” using the craft moves; symbolism, a first person narrator, and inner thoughts. First, Lee showed symbolism by writing the characters of Boo Radley and Tom Robinson to be the mockingbirds referred to in the title. This is shown when Atticus says, “Mockingbirds are one of the most innocent animals and it should be a sin to kill them.” Next, the craft move of a first person narrator was used to convey feelings of innocence. The book being narrated by Scout further supports this, since children are often associated with innocence. Finally, the author uses inner thoughts to give the reader a glimpse into what the characters are feeling. An example of this is when Scout is in the courtroom and is thinking about what the verdict will be. This craft move validates the idea that the difference between innocence and guilt can give characters different points of view. Lee successfully used symbolism, a first person narrator, and inner thoughts to make the reader feel empathetic for the innocent Boo Radley and Tom Robinson.

  22. The theme of my book is falling in love. The two main characters in the book are Mie and Komura, komura is in love with Mie. Mie like komura back. Both Komura and Mie have yet to learn they like one another. The reader knows that Mie likes Komura and Komura likes me back. So why they have not been together I have no idea.

Another technique the author uses is symbolism. Ex. when Mie grabs Komura’s face Komura blushes hard. I think the way Mie cares and treats Komura is cute. The way Komura is there hand and foot for Mie whenever she forgets her glasses is cute as well. Komura is always helping mie. Mie likes grabbing Komura’s face and looking at him.

Another craft that shows that Mie and Komura fall in love is Inner thoughts. In the story, Komura always has inner thoughts. One time in the book mie says that Komura would look nice with a piercing. Komura almost buys a pair of earrings online when he realizes that any comment from Mie will make him do anything. The way the Author wrote the book is inspiring. To read it is a dream come true. The end :).
