“Up The Slide” is a short story written by Jack London that takes place in northwestern Canada in the Yukon territory. While Clay goes to get wood for the fire, Nature makes it more difficult for him as he makes his way up the mountain. He has a little trouble coming down the mountain as Nature takes its role in his journey. The author uses nature to teach us that it can be beautiful but also very dangerous at the same time.

Before clay goes to get wood, mhe studies the mountain to see what the easiest way to get up it would be. He figured it would take at least 30 minutes to get up the mountain and to the trees. He was concerned, the longest way around the mountain was the shortest way to the trees. As he makes his way up, he needs to fasten his ax so it wouldn’t interfere with his movements as he continues to climb up the rock.

As Clay makes it to the top, he takes out his as and with a few swift swings, the tree falls into the chasm. He knew that going up the mountain was going to be easy but it was the trip down, he knew was going to be dangerous. It was getting cold out and he was afraid his blood would stop circulating so he kept going. He realized he went the wrong way down so he turned around, headed back up the mountain, and went down the other side.

Nature takes a huge role in this story. Clay needs to go out in the cold to get wood for the fire as it’s 30 degrees below 0 so it can make it harder for clay to get up the mountain. The terrain is also a problem for Clay because it’s all rocky and a lot harder to go through with sled dogs. It’s especially difficult because the ground is covered in ice and snow

In the end Clay and Swanson sold 50 cords of wood at $40 a cord. Nature can be beautiful but also dangerous.

“Up the slide” is a short story by Jack London this story takes place on a mountain is a camp. There are two characters in this story, Clay the main character and Swanson his friend and partner for the work missin they are on.

This story starts out with Swanson cooking food and Clay getting ready to go get some firewood. As the story progresses we find that clay will run into a problem leaving him with the reminder that, nature can be beautiful but also dangerous. As he finds himself climbing down a slippery slope that he climbed to get firewood. He falls, luckily he stops to think and is able to save himself.

He then has to climb back up in order to take a better, safer route back to where his stuff was at the bottom of the cliff. Which in the end took him longer than it would have if he would have just went down the mountain in the first place, He then proceeds to go back to camp with the firewood. When he gets there he tells Swanson what had happened and Swanson only laughed not really seeming to take into account the fact that his friend and partner almost died.

Although some people might argue that the theme of this story is never give up, The text clearly shows that nature is beautiful but also dangerous, as we find the main character clay in a bind with mother nature. All in all Clay learned a very valuable lesson, That nature is beautiful but also dangerous.

  4. It all started when a man named Clay went out to get some firewood and told his friend Swanson he would be back in 30 minutes but ended up taking him 3 hours just to go and get some firewood. That is because nature made it difficult for him by making him make a dangerous trek up and down a mountain side. So him and his friend Swanson can survive in the wild Yukon area of Canada. Although it could be argued as the theme being never give up the text shows that the theme is nature can make things difficult.

In the story it took him a long time to just get some firewood for his house. Nature made it difficult for him by first making a huge climb down the mountain side from his house on the other side of the mountain but the harder part for him was the insane trek back up the mountain where he had to bail because the vertical of the mountain was so high. Where at one point all he was hanging onto grass with his fingertips barely hanging on when he was still trying to climb the mountain.

But at one point when he was climbing up the mountain it was almost completely vertical so he had to turn around and try to climb back down the mountain which he had already started to climb back up. When he was climbing down he had a very close call by him having to jump almost jump to get better hand placement. So instead of going back up the mountain from the way he came he had to go around the entire mountain which would take a lot of time but would be much more safe.

So far he has had a really difficult time going up and down these mountains in the Yukon. But things are finally looking up for him instead he is now going around the mountains which he probably should have done this whole entire time. But while he is taking the easy way out he has been out for a long time and used up a lot of his energy so now he is very tired and hungry so he cannot wait to get home with his buddy Swanson and some warm food. But finally when he does get home after 3 hours of work which he said would only take about 30 minutes. Swanson is just sitting there and says what took you so long. With him not know what he just went through.

In conclusion, this story was about how nature can make things difficult. Also, Clay had to go through a lot of stuff to just get firewood and to get home with Clay.
