After you finish your short research project, take some time to find out about the new rock that Opportunity found recently. It will be important to find a valid source, as there are many conspiracy theories out there. When you are done, you will share how you searched for the website, the website you used, and one interesting thing you found.
I've got a sample for you!
How I found the article: I typed in NASA Jelly Doughnut Rock on Mars into Google. After the results came up, I clicked on "News" to narrow my results. After that, I looked at the websites and chose "The Washington Post" because they are a national newspaper and very trustworthy.
ReplyDeleteWebsite: http://www.washingtonpost.com/national/health-science/mars-rover-finds-mysterious-jelly-doughnut-rock/2014/01/23/c96bfc6e-8455-11e3-bbe5-6a2a3141e3a9_story.html
What I found out: They interviewed Steve for this article, so it makes me confident in the results. There is a movie on this website from Nasa - so that would be good. The article tells the main two theories about where the rock came from. I bet Steve's theory will be right. I'm not going to write the theory here - you find that out yourself. BUT when you post, make sure you share what you found!!!
How I found the article: I typed in Jelly Doughnut on Mars into Google. I clicked News.. Then, I clicked on NBC news, because they are a very reliable source.

What I found out: It is a mystery rock that just suddenly appeared on Mars. It was Sol 3528 that Opportunity passed and nothing was there.. Then Sol 3540 went past again and the rock was there! Steven Squyres said the weird rock is a example of how the red planet keeps surprising us even, 10 years later..
How I found the article: I typed into Google "NASA Jelly doughnut rock." After the results came up, I didn't click on news the thing that I wanted actually came up so I clicked on it and then I trust "The Washington Post" because they are very trustworthy.
ReplyDeleteWebsite: http://www.washingtonpost.com/national/health-science/mars-rover-finds-mysterious-jelly-doughnut-rock/2014/01/23/c96bfc6e-8455-11e3-bbe5-6a2a3141e3a9_story.html
What I had found: I found Opportunity found that NASA nicknamed "blueberries" on Mars - small iron rock-rich spheres that littered the planets the planet's surface and hinted at the presence of ancient water. The rock turned up a few weeks ago on the rim of Endeavour Crater, a spot called Murray Ridge, where Opportunity is spending its sixth Martian winter. But the after photo, taken 12 days later, depicts the stark arrival of a white-and-maroon oddity. One possibility is that a nearby impact could have flung a piece of debris Opportunity’s way. Or, in what Squyres believes is the more likely explanation, one of the rover’s six wheels flicked it up out of the ground.
I think that that is VERY well written and has a lot of information. Great job!!!!!! :)
DeleteWhat I typed in: http: //www.usatoday.com/tech/. I typed it in Google. After the web sights came up I clicked on News to get better results. After that, I looked at the web sights and chose USA TODAY because they are trust worthy.
ReplyDeleteThis is something that I forgot to add
ReplyDeleteThe team has also released new Opportunity results, published in the journal Science on Thursday, of an ancient clay-forming, subsurface aqueous environment at the site of Endeavour Crater. Some of the exposed rocks are the oldest materials investigated to date by Opportunity, from a time when Mars would have been habitable.
More great information Alicia
DeleteHow I found the article- I typed in "jelly doughnut on mars'' into Google. Then I click news. Then I looked through the articles and clicked The Los Angeles Times article.

What I found- A random rock just suddenly got on mars. Opportunity passed one area on Sol 3528 and nothing was there. But when he came back on Sol 3540, there was a strange object that looks like a jelly doughnut! There has been many theories of how it got there. One realistic thing that could have happened is that the rover could have been ''wheeling around'' and dug it up with its wheels, uncovering the rock. Another thing that could have happened is that it got there when something hit the red planet. "We're completely confused," Squyres said. "We're having a wonderful time. Everyone on the team is arguing and fighting." is one thing he has said. Even through everyone disagreeing he is having a great time investigating.
I found the news article by typing in on oolon Jelly doughnut on mars nasa news articles and went over to the middle one on the top. Washington times.
ReplyDeleteWebsite: http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2014/jan/17/mars-mystery-jelly-doughnut-rock-baffles-nasa/
What I found out: They actually interviewed him and he said that it wasn't there before
also that Steve thinks that it could have been from the impact of a medore or the wheel of the rover just hit a rock and made it look like that.
How i found the site:I put in the search bar Jelly donut on mars. Then i clicked one news. Then i clicked on the first website.

Found out:The mars senec does not change much, so this is kinda new to JPL.Even though JPL has seen weird on mars nithing quite like this.It appeared on sol 3528.Two weeks ago it was found.
How I found the source: I typed jelly doughnut on mars? into google. the i went to the top and pressed the news button. After that I clicked on USA Today and got a video instead of an article and it turns out that the scientists in JPL think that the rock was just turned upside down by one of Spirit's turns she made it got flipped.
ReplyDeleteThe link to the website: http://www.usatoday.com/videos/tech/sciencefair/2014/01/23/4793267/
I think it was posit is possable that spirit made the rock but science spirit failed in 2010 and they found it two days ago it could not have been from spirit.
DeleteThe website i used: http://www.washingtonpost.com/national/health-science/mars-rover-finds-mysterious-jelly-doughnut-rock/2014/01/23/c96bfc6e-8455-11e3-bbe5-6a2a3141e3a9_story.html. The rock was found a few days after the aniverssery of Spirit and Opprtunity. Opprtunity walked by a place with nothing to be found he came back there was a rock that just apperad.

ReplyDeleteThe website i used: http://www.newsoxy.com/science/jelly-doughnut-rock-mars-153378.html Steve thinks that Opportunity's wheel kicked it up and know it want back and know it sees it so they are looking at it.
ReplyDeleteI found the source on: http://www.washingtonpost.com/national/health-science/mars-rover-finds-mysterious-jelly-doughnut-rock/2014/01/23/c96bfc6e-8455-11e3-bbe5-6a2a3141e3a9_story.html Some rock just appeared that looked like a powdered jelly donut. This rock is of course called "Jelly Donut" rock. This strange event happened 12 days after Opportunity took a picture in the exact spot. Steve was interviewed and he said that it probably was just from the rover "kicking" it with one of it's wheels. Since then, people have been coming up with strange conspiracies of how it got there.
ReplyDeleteI searched "jelly doughnut rock on mars" in google, then I hit on the news bar so that the info would be more truthful. I clicked on "The Seattle Times", because that website can be trusted. Here's the website: http://seattletimes.com/html/nationworld/2022742073_apxscimarsrock.html
ReplyDeleteWhat I found was that Steve Squires thinks that Opportunity kicked it up with one of his wheels and that's why it wasn't there before. I think that is the most reasonable explanation. Also, I believe Steve and I think he can be trusted. That's what I found when I researched the jelly doughnut on Mars.

What I found: One theory is that nearby impact could have thrown debris Opportunity’s way. Or what Steven Squyres thinks is that one of the six wheels on the rover flung up the rock out of the ground. "This rock is a huge clue to water on Mars", some people are saying.
What I typed:I typed in Doughnut Rock NASA in google and I stayed in Web and I found a lot of information.

about what Steve Squyres thought this doughnut was.It said that the labortory was fighting of what it was. Also it said that NASA is sending a rover to mars to explore in 2020.But I think that Steves theroy is right.
I searched : Opportunity found Jelly Donut Rock on Mars, and this is what i got, Steve thinks that when Opportunity drove over it flipped over the rock and one side was covered in dust and the other side wasn't.

What I found: Scientists were very surprised when the rover Opportunity took a picture of a mysterious rock The Jelly Doughnut. When Opportunity first took a picture of that spot the rock was not there, but the second time Opportunity took the same picture the rock was there! Steve thinks the most likely scenario is that when Opportunity past by he flicked the rock out in the open.

ReplyDeleteThe scientists that there could've been to possible explinations for the jelly doughnut appearing on mars and they think that it's was from an asteroid, or it couldv'e been from sprits wheel kicking it up, Steve said the best answere to the solution is most likely sprirt kicking it up
