  2. The story The Ninny is about a governess, Yulia Vassilyena, being told that for every minor mistake she had made around the house, would result in parts of her paycheck being cut. The story shows her ignorance and how it lead to her not fully getting what she deserved.

In the beginning, the governess and her boss, the father of the children she took care of, were talking about what her pay would be for the work she had already done. He began to tell her she would lose money from the days that the kids were sick, to things such as breaking a glass. I found it to be strange that she had not been standing up for herself over a thing such as a broken glass! Why would she not have said that it was just a glass and surely an accident? In my opinion, she shouldn’t lose money from making a mistake.

In the story, it took her a very long time to finally stand up for herself. Eventually, when her boss began to talk about how she had taken ten rubles from his wife, she started to say how she only had done it once. I realized quite quickly that her only defense mechanism was to say she had only done it once. I think the author, Anton Chekhov, could have made her defend herself over the broken glass instead of the money. Where Mr. Chekhov decided to show Yulia standing up, it made Yulia look even more foolish trying to defend herself over something that she actually did wrong. While more money was being taken from her paycheck, it eventually resulted in her boss saying it was just a trick to see what she would do to defend herself. Luckily, he gave her the full pay that was set before she began to work.

Surprisingly, she kept saying Merci (thank you), even though he was taking money from her. I would have expected for the story to show her trying to ponder the absurdity of her losing money more in depth, but she said many of her other jobs wouldn’t pay her anything. I found that to be especially thought provoking since she appeared to be the kind of person who didn’t stand up for themselves. My question is why would she be working a job without pay? It just shows she only did what she was told to do and never did what she wanted. It seems that her previous bosses were aware of her foolishness, then took advantage of her. If she only would have said something to show how much work she had really done, she might have been able to be paid at her previous jobs.

I found that the story really creates a good representation of a way that not standing up for yourself can result in not getting what you fully deserve. I pity Yulia Vassilyeva. I truly feel that she may have been cut from other things in her life other than just her pay from a job because she was not judicious enough.

Perhaps it was the way she was raised. Maybe she was afraid to be brave and speak what she felt in fear of losing her job entirely. Whatever it may have been, I think the story teaches a valuable lesson to all; stand up for what you want!

  3. “The Ninny” by Anton Chekhov is a short story that takes place in a bosses office. What makes this story interesting is the fact that, the Ninny, is referring to this girl named Yulina, and she acts somewhat odd while being yelled at. This short story focuses on Yulina’s boss cheating her out of her money. Yulina seems to act strange because while her boss is cheating her out of her hard earned money, she does not refuse, but to take the hit and just cry about the situation even though she knows this is not right. The author uses this story to teach us a valuable lesson to always be true and honest not just to others, but also to ourselves, and if you do this things should turn out right or as they should in the end.
To clarify, in the beginning of the meeting between Yulina and her boss, the boss makes it clear to Yulina that this important meeting is about her pay. The boss then goes on and on about times where Yulina has messed up while watching the bosses kids. Every time he lists a mess up of Yulina’s, the boss takes more and more away from her pay. As the story progresses, Yulina just cries but does not tell her boss that this is not right. So the boss does not care, so he just keeps taking away from her pay. This part of the story shows that Yulina is honest with others, but not to herself. Throughout the story, there was not much actual conversation between the two, just yelling and crying, so that really changes the mood of the story.
Frequently, Yulina just kept losing her pay throughout the story. But at the end of the story she says “merci”, because she was upset. Then, the boss said that he had just played a trick on her, and he was just kidding. But the boss in the end had wondered why she was not true and honest to herself and told him it wasn’t right. But Yulina just said nothing, and the boss gave her her full pay and she left. This part of the story shows what could have really happened if the boss was not kidding and Yulina wasn’t true to herself, Yulina could have lost everything just by not speaking out and being truthful and honest to herself. The author really shows us in this story that if you are truthful and honest not just to others, but also to yourself, things should turn out right in the end.

  4. “The Ninny” by Anton Chekhov, takes place in Russia back in the day. Yulia is the governess of the rich man and ladies kids. Yulia also stole rubles (money) from the family. A wonderful lesson that this book taught me was if you do something wrong you will get not much in return.

So in the beginning the lady invites the governess over to give her the paycheck. Yulia tries to talk up the price by say 40 rubles instead of 30 and also saying that she worked longer that she actually did. The rich person also kept track of everything she did wrong. When the man gets her paycheck he deduct everything she has done wrong including stealing from them. If she would have actually done here work and not made a lot of mistakes she would have gotten paid a lot more. She ends up with 8 rubbles instead of 60.

Although it could be argued standing up for yourself is the theme, the theme is actually, if you do stuff wrong you not get much in return. The reason I say that is when she messes up she gets rubles taken off of her paycheck. The reason I also think it isn't standing up for yourself is what if the lady was saying thank you to get on the girls nerves and wanting her to make her feel worse for what she has done to her family.

“The Ninny” by Anton Chekhov has a very good message in it, don't mess up. All of the reasons I have stated to you about the theme is why I think not messing up is the theme.

  6. In a short story called The Ninny written by Anton chekhov, there's a girl named Yuli Vassilyevna. Yuli is the main character and finds herself in a bit of a bundle. Yuli has has had many jobs that have cheated her, by stealing her paycheck. In her current job Yuli is the governess to her bosses children.

Starting the short story off the boss sat down Yuli and started with money. Only now what happens next is a amazing reason you should stand up for yourself. The boss was testing her, she started off with a lie she claimed that she only payed the governesses 30 rubles, when Yuli claimed she told her 40 the boss objected. The boss then continuous to list a bunch of things she did wrong and take a certain amount of money for how “bad” each of the actions were.

In addition to that the boss was surprised when she said nothing, thee boss then accused her for stealing ten rubles, when yuli claimed she had not the boss said she took note of it and she knows she did. Yuli admits she stole three hoping instead of ten rubles being taken away only three would. But three more ended being subtracted with only leaves her with 11 Rubles.

After that she shows shock by saying “Merci” and that made the boss flip out on her for not standing up for herself, “The boss gazed up after her thinking how very easy it is in this world strong”. She then calls her spineless.

I believe this is to say how if you find someone who you know isn't brave enough to stand up for themselves you can take control so easily. Or it could possible be warning you for what people can do.

  7. The Father was taking money away from Yulia Vassilyevna and was trying to get her to say something. He played a dirty joke on her by taking away rubles for things that he made up and said that she she did.
He took away most of her money and all she said was “merci.” She was pretty much saying thank you everytime he is a jerk to her. The governess then said “In my other places they gave me nothing.” The Father then says “No wonder they gave you nothing you let them run over you and cheat you all the time.” Why didn't you talk or say anything back. You let people talk over you your whole life don’t you think it’s about time you stand up for yourself
This story tells the life of the governess and how her actions can lead to bad things like all the money getting taken away. The story also uses Metaphors when the father reveals that he is playing a joke on her. While she was at her other places she was getting walked over and everyone was a jerk to her. Therefore it shows she never said anything or stood up for herself. She would never say anything back either. This could be interpreted as standing up for yourself but it clearly means not being quiet because she is getting all the money taken away for not saying anything.
At the end of the story the father comes out and says “I was playing a joke on you why didn't you say anything.” The ninny says “They gave me nothing in my other places.” “They gave you nothing because you let them walk over you and they knew you wouldn't say anything so they didn't pay.” “I’ll give you your 80 rubles they are here in an envolope made out just for you.” “Why do you keep your mouth shut .” In other words He is trying to say to speak up and not let them take away your money. The ninny the gives out a bitter smile and says “yes it is possible. The dad gazed after her thinking how very easy it is in this world to be strong.

  8. “The Ninny” is a short story by Anton Chekhov. About a governess and her interactions with the father of a family she works for. The father comes off as a mean person in his interactions with the governess. Throughout the story the governess is a very nice and likeable character. The conversation of the governess and the father shows the theme of the story .Although others may not agree, I believe the theme of the story is it is cruel to try and take advantage of people less fortunate than you.
Through the story the father treats the governess badly. The father comes off as a very cruel person and a stickler. One example is when the father said, “New Year’s Day you broke a cup and saucer. Subtract two rubles.” Another time the father said, “Due to your carelessness Kolya climbed a tree and tore his coat. Subtract ten.” This makes me feel the father is a real stickler and kind of a jerk. To just keep on subtracting money out of her pay even though most of the reasons items were damaged was not her fault. The father says he is going to take money out of the governess check, but in the end, he gives the money to her. It feels like he does it as a trick for his amusement. It is really mean since he has every intention of paying her all her money. These actions illustrate that he is very cruel.
The cruel trick the father was playing on the governess was just for his amusement. It was so cruel because the father was not going to scam her out of money and was just being mean to see her reaction. His actions and attitude toward the governess shows he thinks he is superior to her and the governess is intimidated by the father. The governess is intimidated by the father because she has less money than him and he is her boss. Another reason the father thinks he is superior to the governess is because he is a man. His superiority makes him a much less likable character. The reader feels bad for the governess and dislikes the father.
The very likable character in the story is the governess. From the beginning of the story it seemed the quiet, shy governess is timid and oblivious. One reason I feel the governess is a likeable character is because she doesn’t complain about being lower class and she knows her place in life. When the father was finished acting like he deducted money from her pay, she thanked him for the little money he gave her. This could be interpreted as the governess being thankful but since she didn’t say anything to defend herself she is also timid. The author used imagery to show she is timid when he said, “Her eyes reddened.” To show the reader the governesses reaction and explain her emotions. The author also uses repetition when he had the governess saying, “Merci, Merci…” To show that she is timid.
Throughout the interaction between the father and the governess the author makes the father seem like a bad person and makes the reader sympathizes with the governess. Which makes the reader mad the father is taking advantage of the governess. Using the characters to illustrate the good and bad shows that the main idea is it is cruel to take advantage of people less fortunate than you.

  9. The Ninny Article
    By Brett Owen

Cruel jokes are something awful and in the story The Ninny people it shows how bad someone can go with it. In the story “The Ninny” By Anton Chekhov A governess in getting paid for work she has done for a family. The father had made notes of what she has done to have rublets (Their type of money) taken away from the total amount she gets. She starts at 80 and at the end when in was done down to 11 rublets and she says “merci” which means thank you. Then he revealed that it was a joke, a very cruel one. The author uses this story to tell readers to stand up for themselves, and if you don’t people could take something from you need and you can’t do anything. When that happens you need to stand up for yourself.
In the text after he revealed the cruel joke the governess said “In my other places they gave me nothing.” So when she is getting rublets or money from any place she has to take what she can get because she doesn’t know if she should stand up for herself in this position. The father could have taken more because she has had no past experience with getting paid. If she had been getting paid she would had said more and argued more than once with “I didn’t” once.
Even though this was a cruel joke the governess could have done something to stop more rublets taken away. Right away he took twenty away from her and she kind of showed she knew he was wrong, but she didn’t do enough to express that. When he said she stole rublets she knew she only stole three but he accused her stealing three because he made a note of it and that was the only time she said anything “I didn’t” but that still wasn’t enough to convince a man in a position in power like the father. The father saw her sadness and felt bad by saying “poor little child” at one point in the story. He feels bad but the governess still needed to be strong in this situation more than sitting and being silent for most of the entire cruel joke.
So all in all she had chances to stop this but she couldn’t say a thing. If she stated earlier the father wouldn’t have taken away even half as much as he did. She tried to say something when he said “Thirty a month” she jumped on it right away and said “forty” and then he said “He made a note of it and that silenced her.
Even though the governess should have stood up for herself the father put the pressure on her to do it he was confident in what he said, which the governess could barely speak she was so scared of him. He insulted her, he yelled, and took something she wanted, which she should have been invoiced to yell and fight back against him. As confident as he was he was able to get her to sit down and cry. She couldn’t fight because how confident as was just was enough to make her quite.
The father had a lot of power in this position, he had money, the upper hand, he used this to make her cry and was able to give 11 out of 80 rublets that has to be really desperate on the governesses part because of that it could be argued that the lesson is treat your employees better but that's only a small part of the whole picture. The big picture is standing up for yourself. She couldn’t have said anything because there is more unemployed in the world. She probably can’t say anything because she might get fired and get nothing from it, as a result she had no chance to do anything against him. In the story the author used metaphors to describe the ninny used by the father, an example is. “So spineless” that she can be easily pushed over. “Why are you such a ninny” scared can’t talk back “Such a nitwit” she’s dumb because fend for herself. Henceforth she should stand up for herself because how bad she kicked when she was down so next time there will be more of a chance to stand up for herself next time.
All in all the ninny taught people to stand up for themselves, when someone is taking away something you need. The governess was hurt by the father, but she was alright in the end. There could’ve more damage to her than was done

  10. “The Ninny” is a very short story written by Anton Chekhov. It takes place in a wealthy home with a governess (The Ninny) named Yulia Vassilyevna. She teaches the children of the wealthy family. In this short story I think it teaches to stick up for yourself even when the father of the wealthy family is trying to take away her rubles.

When Yulia wants a raise because she was only paid 30 rubles, so she approaches him to ask for a raise and doesn’t get one. In fact, he said every bad thing, thing she did wrong, or every thing she broke he deducted from her usual low pay job. He keeps taking her paycheck away from her little by little.

After all the things she had taken away from her and how little money she now has she said “merci” (which means thank you) again and again, because her last jobs didn’t pay her anything. When Yulia was grateful for the money even though she was cheated out of her money. The father was furious because she kind of guilt tripped him, in other words she made him feel very bad because she was crying and still thanking him for the little money she got.

The father was surprised that her last jobs didn’t give her anything. He also said “I was playing a trick on you - a dirty trick,” and he was confused why she didn’t speak up or protest against him when she was being cheated out of her money. He ended up giving her 80 rubles which is over half of what she got before, and he also apologized for the curle trick. Yulia said “merci” several more times and then left.

Although it could be argued that you should be nice to your employees, the text actually says to stand up for yourself until you get what you deserve.

Although, Yulia and the father had some sort of a disagreement about her pay the father generously gave her much more that she usually got, so I believe the reason for this book is to stick up for yourself and get what you deserve.
