“The day I got lost” is a short story about a man named Professor Schlemie. Professor Schlemie has a disease called alzheimer's which is a disease where you forget things about yourself everyday. One day he really gets himself in trouble and loses his stuff and forgets where he last had it. He tries remembering but with his disorder he just can’t put the pieces together. So he gets in a cab but then all of the sudden he doesn't remember where he lives. He orders the cab driver to take him home but the driver doesn’t know where he lives. The driver ends up dropping him off by the nearest telephone booth so he can call someone but he doesn’t remember his own number. So, he gets out the yellow pages and looks up his number, but of course he took his number out of it so people couldn’t spy on him. Then out of nowhere, rain begins to fall and it seems as if all hope has been lost. But then, Schlemie looks across the street and sees a dog. This dogs seems to be in the same situation as him so he calls the dog over and begins to pet it. This dog could be a sign of symbolism because he is in the same boat as Schlemie is. Professor is sitting there with the dog and a car pulls up and it turns out to be Professor Schemies relative and he takes him and the dog home and they celebrate his birthday and end up keeping the dog. I think that the theme of this story is never give up. Because every time Professor Schlemie failed he tried something else over and over again without giving up, even tho he had alzheimer's he didn't seem to be fazed by it.
“The Day I Got Lost”, by Isaac Bashevis Singer is about Dr.Schlemiel. Dr.Schlemiel is a professor who teaches philosophy classes in New York City. Dr.Schlemiel is very absent minded which means he is a very forgetful person. For example, he is always forgetting his umbrella, and/or his briefcase, phone numbers. One day in New York City, it was Dr.Schlemiel’s birthday. That day, Dr.Schlemiel was trying to get home after a day of teaching philosophy so he called a taxi. “Where to?” Asked the driver. At this moment Dr.Schlemiel remembered he emptied out his pockets at work that day. So Dr.Schlemiel said, “home.” “And where’s that sir?”asked the driver. “I cannot remember.”replied Dr.Schlemiel. “May I ask your name?” Asked the driver. So after the professor gave the driver his name, the driver took him to the closest phone booth. When The professor got out of the taxi it started to rain, and when it did he remembered that he forgot his briefcase and umbrella in the car. When he walked into the store he found the phone, miraculously he remembered a number of a friends phone.
The theme of The Day I Got Lost is no matter what bad happens something good can come out of it if you have a good attitude. One event that shows this theme is when professor gets lost and meets a new friend on the way home. By finding a friend, it shows that even when lost or in a bad situation good still comes from it with a good attitude. This shows the theme a lot by knowing he will get lost and lose his things on a daily basis, yet he smiles, jokes, and continues to live his life to the fullest. By his use of figurative language, he is able to bring his struggles to life through his stories. Also, because of his figurative language, the reader does not feel as bad for him because of his humorous and optimistic take on his forgetfullness. Another place in the story that supports this theme is when he finds a lost dog. Though the character is lost and cold, he sees himself in a dog that is also lost and cold. He tells the dog that they are in this together. He takes the dog home. His wife is pessimisstic because she does not believe the dog, cat and birds will all get along. The professor optimistically believes they will and everything will turn out fine. Eventually, he writes of how all the animals are best friends. Again showing, thogh bad things happen good things come with a good attitude. Anoother place in the story that supports this theme is the fact he shares all of his thoughts with you. He is letting you feel like a friend who is part of the story, but knowing his thoughts and feelings. The theme is shown because he is narrating himself and giving you his thoughts and how he does not see his memory improving and he will continue to lose things, he will continue to have a good attitutde and enjoy the good that comes to him. As you can see, no matter what bad happens something good can come out of it if you have a good attitude is the theme of the story.
The day I got lost is a short story by Isaac Bashevis Singer. The story is about A guy named professor Shlemiel. He has lived in New York City for 40 years, it could be said that the professor has short term memory, he really just pays attention to the big things in life.On his way home he forgot his address. That started a whole chanin of things he forgot. As he tries to get home he finds a dog. The author uses this story to show people not to give up, and if you don't give up good things will come your way. When professor Shlemiel first gets lost, the taxi driver takes him to a drugstore to find his number. He looks in the phonebook there to see if he can find his number, then he remembers that his number is not in the book. He remembers that there is another Mr. shlemiel. He doesn’t say anything bad about himself, he keeps trying to get home. After his tries to find his number, he remembers that he forgot hi briefcase. He tried to go after the taxi but it was to far away. He spends a few minutes thinking about another way to get home, then he remembers his friends phone number. He calls the number, but the babysitter there said that they are all at his house for his birthday party. He calls other numbers hoping that they haven’t left to go to his house, but they all had left. After trying really hard to go home, he decided to go outside and think, When he was sitting outside thinking about how to get a dog came by. The big black dog……. Standing in the rain getting soaked looking at me with his big sad eyes. The gave him some kind of hope. The dog or Bow Wow had got lost too. The story said that he had forgotten his home and to get there. So he was just as lost as Professor shlemiel. I think the dog was a symbol of hope to professor shlemiel. When he found the professor, then his friends taxi drove by and saw them. The wife saw how much this dog had helped him out and they Bow Wow say with them. Even though it could be said that the theme was hope/ happiness, i think it was not giving up
“The Day I Got Lost” By: Isaac Bashevis Singer The short story “The day I Got Lost” is a story about Professor Shlemiel. Professor Shlemiel has a hard time remembering stuff. That is why my theme is never give up no matter how hard it gets. Professor Shlemiel on his way home he forgets where he lives and he had just cleaned out his coat pockets. So the taxi driver says I will drop you off at a phone so you can have someone pick you up. So professor Shlemiel was getting out and the taxi driver took off without him getting his suitcase and his suitcase has all of his stuff like his wife’s phone number and all of his friends phone numbers. While waiting at the drugstore he remembers a friends number so he quickly dialed the number. When the phone picks up its not his friend but the babysitter. While talking to the babysitter he asks where he lives and the babysitter thinks its a joke and hangs up. Professor Shlemiel sits outside of the drug store and he meets a dog and he says to the dog “whatever happens to me happens to you”. When he got home his wife and his friends were both surprised and upset because he made it home by himself and he also brought home a special friend and he named him bow wow.
The story, the day I got lost is a short story written by Isaac Bashevis Singer, it tells the tale of professor shlemiel and how he got lost. In this story I truly believe that the theme is never give up and here are my reasons why.
First, about midway through the story shlemiel meets a dog while he was in the rain about to give up, which he laters names Bow Wow. I believe that Bow Wow is an embodiment of don’t give as he appears when shlemiel was about to give up and makes quick friends with him. Bow Wow stays with shlemiel with the rest of the story always making sure that shlemiel never gives up. Second, right before he meets bow wow he brings up the question which came first the chicken or the egg? This question is repeated again around the end of the story, and commonly within symbolism repetition is used. I this question is repeated so I believe it’s symbolism. I believe it symbolizes the fact of what came first the problem or the solution. Now I bet you’re gonna be like “but it obviously means the belief of courage.” and I’ll have this to say, clearly this entire story is about having a problem and finding the solution without losing your hope. So shlemiel will never lose hope on his journey home
In conclusion, these are the reasons why I believe that Bow wow and the question which came first the chicken or the egg are both symbolisms in the story The Day I Got Lost for never give up.
The story “The Day I Got Lost” By Isaac Bashevis singer is about a absent minded professor name “Professor Shemiel”. When he forgets, he always is trying to remember even if he is a absent minded professor, or if he does forget something he's always racking his brain if he can remember even if it's just grading his students paper to getting lost. The story takes place in New York where he works as a Teacher/Professor for a school that he can barely remember. Where our story begins is when he forgets his way home one day after work. While forgetting where he lives, he leaves his suitcase with all of his papers in a cab that leaves before he can try flag the sabe cab back down. Now he only knows his name. While wandering through New York he meets a dog who he befriends to get back home. When he first realizes he had left the suitcase in th cab his first thing is to flag it down. When he realizes that doesn't work as it drives through the traffic. Now he only knows his name don't know where he is or where he lives. But he knows that if he wonders long enough something will happen to either help him or get him of track. Later, in his adventure he come apon a dog which looks a lost has he is. With nothing on the dog to say where he came from or who he is. While looking at the dog as if it was a reflection or almost human he talks to it and calls it to come. It listens has they become best of friends. When he describes the dog you can really imagine it with imagery. With talking to it like a friend he gives it personification where he treats the animal if it was human. And if you don’t pay attention you might have just missed it. By the end, he is back home with his friends and family who ask about the dog but they take him in anyways. With the end that if he had given up he would not have been where he was then if he had given up.
In the story “the day I got lost” Professor shlemiel suffers from alzheimer's and he never gives up. He is always struggling with losing his belongings or possessions because of his disease. Professor Shlemiel is a very smart, but odd man. He only forgets personal stuff rather than informational stuff due again, to him having memory problems
One day professor shlemiel was in his home city, New York and he got lost. Professor shlemiel went to a restaurant and was alone. After he was done eating he got into a taxi, and that's how he got lost.
The taxi driver asked him where he was going and he said “ home Im going home” the taxi driver asked where that was and he had no response. The taxi driver pulled over and kicked Shlemiel out of the taxi and drove away. He was clueless on what to do next. He found a phone booth and made some calls to his friends. Only to realize that his friends were at his house for a birthday party, his birthday party. He remembered that he had information in his briefcase about where he lived. He looked down at his side to grab it but then he realized that he left it in the taxi. He starts to walk around a little when it starts to rain. He stands under a building canopy. He sees a dog across the street and approaches it. The dog is cold and wet. He starts to pet him when the dog lets out a howl. This could be a sign of symbolism because they are both in a not so good situation.Next thing you know they get lucky. Professors shlemiel’s relative pulls up in a car. The professor made it home safely with a new friend. It the story the “Day I got lost” professor shlemiel shows us not to give up in any difficult situations that come our way
