  1. In The Toll by Neal Shusterman the author uses many techniques to make the book more alluring. Shusterman uses multiple perspectives, mood, and he gives the reader more information than the characters to keep you reading.

First, shusterman uses multiple perspectives to show you how the events affect different people. He also uses this to make the reader wonder what is happening next because it will just leave a story at a cliffhanger and then not return to it for a while.

Next, is mood the Shusterman uses mood to make the reader keep reading the book. He does this by doing something impossible and later explaining it.

Finally, he gives you more information than the characters in order to let you have a predicted outcome only to have something happen instead he also uses small mini chapters in between the chapters to make you guess what is going to happen

In conclusion Shusterman uses multiple perspectives, mood, and giving the reader more information than the characters to build suspense and make you want to keep reading.

  2. Everyone in there life should be striving to be there best self. In “Summer Ball,” By Mike Lupica, Danny is overthinking his basketball situation a lot. He is mainly thinking about this basketball camp that his dad signed him up for, he is very nervous because he does not know how good he will be, if he is going to be to short to be good or if he is just simply not good enough. So when he is doing this he just slacks off for a while instead of practicing to get better so he can be the best in the basketball camp. In “Summer ball,” By Mike Lupica, Mike shows this by making his dad someone who also had the same issues but worked so hard to be the best he could he made it to the NBA.

Multiple Perspectives, In this book I love how Mike Lupica uses multiple perspectives to show that you need to be working you hardest to be your best! When times get hard for Danny he tends to just stop trying instead of trying harder to fix it. His Dad sees this and over time he gets frustrated with Danny so he tells Danny about his childhood life. He says “When I was your age life was tuff I did not have much but what I did have was determination to be my best self.” This is the part of the story that might be the most relevant to your life.

Flashbacks, In this book “Summer Ball” the author uses many flashbacks to show that you need to be the best you. How does he do this you may ask, well this is how. So right before the basketball camp Danny flashes back to his previous basketball season where all he thought about before the big game was that he was the best and no one could stop him. This almost always leads him to playing good during the game. Now the 1 time that he did not do his prep talk to himself was against the 2nd best team in the league. He was doubting himself that he would play good that night, so once it was game time he still had jitters and was very nervous. At the end of the game he ended up only having 6 points that game and the worst performance of his season. Flashforwards, In the story Summer ball by Mike Lupica there is scenes in the story where there are flashforwards. In the story Danny’s dad is having a flashforward of what his son can become. In the flashforward he sees the two sides of what Danny could become the two sides he sees are what he will be like if he is undetermined and gives up easily. Another side that he sees is what he could become if he puts in tons of time and effort to be the best he can be. Dannys dad always wanted Danny to be just like him successful and hard working, and that is what he saw in the flashforward if Danny was always trying his best. Danny’s dad thinks to himself “ No matter what I’m going to make that kid a star”.

In “Summer Ball” By Mike Lupica Danny’s dad symbolizes that being the best you and working hard to be the best pays off. Danny’s Dad in “Summer Ball” is hard working determined and is strong minded. Danny’s dad has always had the hopes and dreams of danny being just like him, So far Danny has been just like his dad not quite his dad but close. But will Danny ever have the great determination and mindset as his dad, and if he does how long will it be for?

  3. White Bird
My claim in the book White Bird is that just because people have a different religion does not mean they need to be treated differently.
The story started when Sara was in school and everything was fine but then the Hiter became president and started ordering soldiers to start killing jews. One day soldiers came to the school and ordered every boy and girl that was Jewish to be taken away. Everyone was taken but Sara stayed in the school to hide because she did not want to be taken away. Then a boy came up to Sara and told her to follow him if she would want to live. He took her to his barn where she would be safe for a while. The boy told his parents about her and the parents helped take care of her. SHe did not know how to handle this because like what if they turn her in, what if she would never meet her parents anymore, WHAT IF SHE WOULD DIED. Later people started getting suspicious of the barn so Sara left and tried to find her parents so she could live a better life. When she found her parents and everything was ok.

My claim is that just because someone has a different religion does not mean they needed to be treated differently. This supports this claim.

  4. Once you are apart of something that is going on, you may not be able to get out of it. We all know that students don’t like school and don’t like when teachers are mad at them/ yelling at them. But that doesn't mean kill the teacher. In the book Secrets, lies and scandals by Amanda k. Morgan, 5 friends/classmates Ivy, Cade, Mattie, Kinley and Tyler are in class when Cade gets really mad at the teacher. What did they he do to the teacher, well something really bad. He killed the teacher and now all of them are trying to help him by hiding the body where no one will ever find him. In Secrets, lies and Scandals by Amanda k. Morgan, is trying to teach the reader that if you feel like doing something think it over. The readers could find Dialogue, Cliffhangers and character action in the book.
One of the techniques that Amanda k. Morgan used was Dialogue. On page (97), Tyler and Kinley are in a barn together while waiting for cade and Mattie. Tyler and kinley are talking about how this is crazy that they killed a teacher and now are trying to hide the body. Tyler is talking back to her about how he likes Kinley in a way. Page (102) Cade and Mattie are talking in car about what just happened and what they are going to do. They are driving everywhere to find this special chemical. There are many parts where there are 2 people talking with each other trying to solve a solution. Most of them are trying to hide the professors body and/ or trying to get him to be alive. Page (110) Ivy and kinley are talking about what if someone finds out or see them with the dead body. Little do they know someone found out that the teacher is missing.
Another technique that the author used was Cliffhangers, There are many spots were the author put it at a dead end were you half to keep reading to find out what happens next. After every chapter she puts a sentence in that makes you want to keep reading and just makes you anxious about what is going to happen next. The author makes the reader think that something bad or good is going to happen but then there is always a change about what you think. On page (46) The last sentence Amanda put was “ Hey! She shouted, hoisting herself over the rest of the way and dropping over the fence.” The readers are thinking who is she and why is she jumping over a fence? Amanda is making the readers want to keep reading.
The final technique that the reader may have found in the book is Character actions, There are a lot of character actions in the book. For example on page 68 all five friends were looking at each other all worried and confused. They were wondering why they killed the teacher. On page (97) Tyler was really scared to tell kinley how he really feels about her. He was super nervous but once he told her, he was happy, she was happy. They are now together happy instead of awkwardness between them. However, It got really confusing after because after Tyler told Kinley how he feels and they are both happy it cute strait into cade and Mattie going around town to find a chemical. The readers are really confused because we don't even know why they need the chemicals or why they are in town.
In the book Secrets, lies and scandals Amanda k. Morgan is teaching us different craft movements in the book. Dialogue, cliffhangers and even character actions. Ivy, Cade, Mattie, Kinley and Tyler are good friends until they killed a teacher. Amanda is teaching the readers that if you feel like doing something think it over. It is ok to do something on accident, you just gotta own up to it and not hide it.

  5. Don’t let differences get in the way of a friendship. in dragon hoops so many people in the story are different but they still get along. In dragon hoops Gene Luen Yang , uses Flashbacks, backstories, and symbolism to show what the characters have to overcome and how hard they work to win the state championship.

Gene luen yang, uses flashbacks to put on display for the readers how much this game means to coach Lou. It lakes you back to when he was in the high school program. The game has grown on him, once when he got put in at the end of the game he had a chance to win it. His shot went in but to the opposing teams basket. It shows that now he will bring this program home a championship trophy. It now represents a way of life it is no longer just a game anymore.

The Author uses backstories to show how they have persevered through the bad and embraced the good. He explained that Ivan and Paris grew up in a not so friendly environment. The book doesn’t say what they saw but readers could guess something. Alex flew over to America from China and can’t see his family just so he could play basketball and now has to go to junior varsity practices before school and varsity practice after school. Jeevin practices punjabi and at basketball games some people can say some really despicable things they shout things like get out of here you f’ing arab. Except he is not even an arab.

The author uses symbolism in the book dragon hoops book. In the dragon hoops book the symbolism is the state championship trophy he acknowledges it over and over again. The state championship trophy meant everything to the dragons. So winning that game meant they were successful. If they would have lost that game they would have done all their work all season for nothing. As soon as the season ends they look forward to this night all year.

The author uses flashbacks to show how much the game of basketball really means to this team.He also uses back stories to show that just because you don’t live in a perfect neighborhood or are a different race or religion does not mean you are limited. The Author uses symbolism to represent how much the trophy means to this team. This isn’t just a team it’s a family. I hope you understand how these guys stuck together and made it happen.

We all have experienced the feeling of greed, or have met someone who is consumed by greed. The Pearl by John Steinbeck, is a classic story about a pearl diver, being consumed by greed, and evil. Kino the main character found a giant pearl while diving, and wanted to sell it for his child’s medical treatment, but Kino got greedy, and that was his downfall. In “The Pearl”, Steinbeck uses the pearl to symbolise greed, the scorpion that symbolizes the destruction of innocence, and the doctor to symbolize arrogance, and this is to show that greed will become your worst enemy

The pearl is the main symbol in this story; it can be used to symbolise greed, and the misfortune it can bring. The only reason Kino had this pearl in his possession is because his baby was stung by a scorpion, and the doctor would help his family because they were poor. Then when Kino found the pearl he imagined that his baby would go to school and learn to read and that him and his wife would have a proper wedding. That imaginary future is what kept Kino to continue to possess the pearl, even though after everything that happened to Kino after he found the pearl. For example Kino was hit on the head by an intruder who wanted to steal the pearl, and had to be nursed back to health by his wife Juana. Although when it came time to sell this pearl Kino thought the merchants weren’t offering enough for it, so Kino refused their offers. Instead Kino tried travelling to the city to sell it after his house was burnt down. All he came back with was the pearl and his dead child.

The first symbol shown in the story was the scorpion. This symbolizes the destruction of innocence. Kino’s baby Coyotito, was stung by a scorpion in the beginning of “The Pearl”, and it was the start to everything that happened in the book. After Coyotito was stung, Kino and his wife rushed him to the doctor in the city, but the doctor refused to even attempt to treat Coyotito, because the doctor knew that Kino wasn’t very wealthy and knew that he would be able to pay for medical treatment. While at the time Kino and his family were very close to each other, and they were also apart of a community where everyone knew each other very well. Although to pay for the treatment Kino was hoping to find pearls to sell. When diving he found a giant pearl that he called “The Worlds Pearl”, that he believed he would get loads of money for the treatment. After Kino found the pearl he was defensive and even hit his wife because she was going to through the pearl away. After the baby was stung by that scorpion is when Kino had become greedy and destructive.

Finally the doctor can be seen as a symbol for arrogance. The doctor in “The Pearl” only appears on occasion in the story, although you can tell that he is a snob. He only treats people who are wealthy. Now you might be thinking that doctor is a symbol for greed, but the doctor always thinks he is superior to everyone else, which is close to the definition of arrogant. Since the doctor thought he was below treating poor people in need, he only treated the rich. Finally when the doctor heard that Kino found a giant pearl he immediately went to Kino’s hut, thinking that he could help Kino’s child because now Kino had the money to pay. The doctor even offered to keep Kino’s pearl in his safe. All in all the doctor was an arrogant man.
We have all experienced the emotion of greed or have known someone who is consumed by greed. In “The Pearl” by John Steinbeck, the main character Kino was consumed by greed, and paid dearly for it. In the end it is always ok to be a little greedy on occasion, but don’t let your life be consumed by greed.
