  1. Bullying is a subtle issue at BMS. Leaning into this topic people think that bullying is bad, while it is bullies often bully because of issues at home.

Often times the bully will bully someone who they are jealous of. This reporter interviewed several students from BMS, while multiple students said they haven't been bullied, others stated that they have been bullied about appearance height, weight sports.BMS is trying to stop bullying by moving seats, detentions, and phone calls home. To sum it up the issue at school, occur when the bully is experiencing trouble at home.

Some students need that little push at school to help the situation, think about it this way, in the little train that could he needed that little push in order to make it up the huge hill. And in order for the train to get up and over that hill, he needed his friends/mentors to help him get over that hill. So basically the students need that little push to help them with their bullying problems.

Teachers that are having difficulties with bulls might find more success if they focus on helping them with their problem rather then trying to just stop the bullying plainly. In conclusion in order to stop the students from physically hurting or verbally hurting another student the teacher needs to focus on helping the student. The real problem is the bullies issues at home.

  2. Dances

What do you remember about your middle school dances? This author interviewed seventh and eight graders. Most of the seventh graders said that they mostly care about being popular. The eight graders said that they worry about getting good grades than being popular. The principle makes sure that if you don’t have good grades that you aren’t aloud to go to the dances. After interviewing kids from BMS over half of them said that if they have bad grades they try to get them back up to go to the dances. Over half the kids that the author interviewed said they go to Culver’s after the dances to hang out with friends and get food.

Three fourths of the people that they mostly see drama start over a boy of friends. For example a student said that she went to a dance and when she walked in her boyfriend was dancing with another girl. She said that she felt like an iceberg floating in the ocean all by itself. About 65% of the kids said that they saw or involved in drama.

There was a teacher that this author interviewed said that there is so much drama and so she has to think about how she can help the kids. She said that she remembers her middle school dances and they really haven't changed. She said that she understands what they kids are going through so she tries to help the kids as much as possible.

Most of the kids that the author interviewed said that they go to the dances to hang out with friends or because they have a relationship. The kids said that most of the teachers don't really know what's happening at the dances. The kids try to solve the problems by themselves. But instead they make it way worse.

This author interviewed and asked how much homework they have on weekends most of the kids say that they have none. They only have homework unless its missing then they do. The kids say that if they go to dances they don't really have to worry about homework. All of the kids this author interviewed said that they enjoy going to dances and that they try to go to dances and get good grades.

  3. Clear backpacks are one of the most hated safety measures in school history. These bags are made to identify any illegal substances or firearms, the plastic bag is made for people to see inside. Regardless of reasoning students are rarely glad to see the change.

Stoneman Douglas High School handed out mandatory clear backpacks after their mass shooting. The students were not pleased about the change since it was an invasion of privacy. The students felt this way because their belongings were always on display for the whole school to see.

Another reason that these bags are disliked is it lacks individuality. Having these bags makes so that everyone in the school is the same and does not show off themselves. According to the students from the school above, the bags smell and cause the school to just smell like plastic.

Some schools allow students to have sports bags but have mandatory searches to make sure they don't have anything besides sport equipment. The students have made a point that they don't have any privacy now that all of there bags have to be search or are not allowed in general.

  5. There is a big difference between 7th and 8th grade homework. Getting your homework done on time is like getting to the school bus when it had already left.

This reporter found out that students that had to do homework at home were more stressed. Students reported that if they had a study all they could finish two to four assignments in study hall. The students also reported that they were stressed out more if they had to do homework at home.

It is not a surprise that people that have to do homework at home are more stressed.

  6. The dress code its either you hate it or you don’t care. If you don't know what it is the dress code is a rule in most schools that makes it so kids can't wear inappropriate clothing. All of the students that were interviewed said that they thought it was unfair, or they never really thought of it.

The one reason that the dress code was made was to make sure that kids would stop with inappropriate behavior by kids. The inappropriate behavior can be showing too much skin, inappropriate language on a piece of clothing, or an inappropriate symbol.

For some people being dress coded is like being struck by a hamer of flames, but for some people it happens every week. The people that were interviewed said that it is unfair to not be able to express their self. One student said that it was outrageous that he got dress coded for wearing a shirt with a tongue and lip on it.

The students said that the policy was touche and was unfair and should be changed. Some said that they never had a problem with it. Some of the students that never had a problem with it still said that it should be changed.

Over all, almost all of the students that were interviewed said that it should be changed. The student think that it should be made more fair and less tuche. The dress code hasn’t been a big problem at BMS, but some people think that it should be changed.

  7. What’s the problem with lockers at BMS? Well this reporter asked 10 students the question are your lockers big enough? Surprisingly 90% of the students said that there lockers were just right for them. The other 10% said there there locker was too small. For some kids ate BMS there locker is like a jungle, for others there locker is like a beautiful prairie.

The students go to their locker eight times a day starting at 7:45 and ending the day at their lockers so it is a big part of our day. Students put 2-5 binders, backpack and school supplies in their locker. “If you organize you can make things fit” said one student at BMS.

The ten percent that said they needed a bigger locker. They have to know that lockers are very expensive. $60,000 for the whole school to get bigger lockers. $60,000 could get Bartels 6/10 of the way to a new gym floor or a nicer new looking school on the inside of the school.

There was a survey of if they wanted an organizing session 70% told the reporter that they would like and organizing session so they could get their lockers clean. The trend of organizing got the school thinking that they don't need bigger lockers.

Another point a teacher at BMS made was If the student had bigger lockers then there would be more of a mess in the lockers since you can fit more things in there. You could fit things in there like more papers and school supplies would get a messier locker.

The trend to Organize was big for the school of BMS. They do not have to spend that money and give the students a class for organizing. That leans the school we do not need bigger lockers and they can give the students an organizing session so the students lockers will be clean.

  8. The transition from an elementary school passing time to middle school is very different. In elementary you get in a line and go to your next class. But in middle school there is way more kids and you need supplies.

Students lockers are sometimes so far away that it feels like 3 miles away to get to their locker than their class. Some kids even have trouble with their lock/locker that they are even more late for class.

In my survey students say they really need more passing time. Also to go along with that 93% of students are late to a class a day or more. The reason they are late is that they have trouble with their lock, they go to the bathroom, or next class is on the other side of the school and they still have to get their stuff out of their locker.

Students trying to get to a class that's on the other side of the room feel like they are trying to get on their plane that they’re already late for.

Students also feel like they need a bit more time to get to classes. The average passing time is about 5 and a half minutes. But schools just have 2-4 minute passing times or 9-10 minute passing time. Students say that 9 to 10 minutes would be too long and they would barley have class time to get their work done. The average of the time students wanted was 4 minutes.

  9. When it comes to the dress code, every student has a different viewpoint on fashion. There are clothes that are fashionable to one person but may seem offensive to another. In several countries, schools require you to wear uniforms. About 16,000 schools in the U.S. require uniforms for students.

Some believe that “ how a young woman dresses can change their attitude at school and it becomes distracting for men”. Girls are as judged for what they wear as a tall person for their height. Girls at BMS have to rethink their outfits before leaving because they feel they will be judged. The majority of the students at BMS believe that the dress code targets girls more than boys. Teachers explained how “In my many years of working here I’ve never seen a boy get dress coded”, and “ Us teachers don’t like sending students out of class, because it interrupts there teaching and the student’s education.

Based on what’s popular or whats in-style can influence the way a student dresses. Social media has a huge impact on what others wear because they want to “fit in” or “blend in” which in some cases isn’t always the best thing. One teacher stated, “Social Media kinda puts peer pressure on students because students want to wear what’s popular so that means wearing showy/inappropriate clothing.”

The dress code at BMS targets girls and how they show off their body which affects how a girl views herself. One 8th grader said, “Most days I regret what I’m wearing as soon as I step foot into BMS, I feel like my style is so different from others, I stand out.” Girls at BMS don’t wanna be dress coded for what she feels comfortable in.

  10. Transitioning from 13 to 14 is a big change in a teenagers life, so is going from 7th to 8th grade. Which includes more homework, stricter rules and NO PHONES.
Multiple students at bartels middle school often complain about one specific rule, no phones. Many say it is unfair while others just genuinely don't like it.

These students don't like this certain rule for multiple reasons, some include not being able to contact parents or relatives. Others would rather use phones instead of chromebooks like we have here at Bartels, (plus people would be able to use their own phones which means Bartels Middle School wouldn't have to pay for the chromebooks.) But some students honestly just want to be able to have it on them for other reasons.

Let’s make up a scenario, (which is very unlikely) say there was a school shooting for example, if kids didn't have there phones on them, their parents wouldn't be immediately informed about the situation by their child. Another example is when we have a question but don't want to interrupt the class, you could go on your phone, look up your question you have or text your friend that's in the same class what your question is.

In addition, trying to convince a teenager not to do something is like trying to get your cat to play fetch with a stick. Because of this, certain students will sneak their phones in class and use them when they aren’t supposed to.In the end, the majority of students enrolled in Bartels Middle School would love to be able to have there phones on them throughout the day. This is also a benefit to the school itself in saving money.

  11. Kids going into detention is like going in for a checkup with the dentists. But in reality, it’s a teacher feeling like they’re missing their lunch for a root canal.

Detentions are a part of every junior high, and high schools policies. BMS (Wayne E. Bartels Middle School), has that policy too. When you get a detention at BMS, you are entitled to miss lunch to spend it with a teacher and sometimes recess(break) too.

According to one student that goes here, “I think the detentions are a little strict here, I’ve been given plenty for absurd reasons.” Another student stated that they believe it should be changed, not because of how they are given, but mostly by when you serve them, because they hate missing recess or lunch for missing homework.

After asking some students that go to BMS, “Do you have any unreasonable detentions for doing anything that I can use in my article?” A few students did have responses that did shock me a little. One kid stated that, “I have gotten one detention that made me want to leave, that was when I asked to borrow a pencil and got yelled at by my teacher for discussing answers with the person next to me. I tried explaining that I was trying to borrow a pencil but he didn’t buy it.”

Have you had any detentions in your time at school?

  12. Bms passing time

How many times have you been late to class with the passing times. Multiple kids are late to class if they use the bathroom before class. When they get to class they are asked “do you have a pass” when they say no they were using the bathroom they say you should of got a pass. They get marked tardies and once they get more than three they get a detention and so on. So most kids don't use the bathroom before class so when they ask to use the bathroom during class the teacher usually asks why didn’t you use it during passing time. When they try to explain that they don’t have the time They go on to say then stop talking to your friend during passing time get your binders and use the bathroom and hurry up to class. One of my fourth hour class teachers when she uses the bathroom she is late and teachers say the passing time is enough when some teachers can’t even do it. Sometimes it’s not even using the bathroom it could be your locker not opening and when that happens you have to get a teacher with a lock key and unlock it. And that takes a while and after that you just want to get to class so you just walk to class without a pass and you were already marked absent before you come into class or after. But there are a couple tips you could use you could buy a binder that can carry all your subject. In one and just carry that around all the time and still be able to use the bathroom and make it to class on time. If you can't afford one of them, then buy a one big binder with dividers and put different classes in the dividers and carry that around. Or if you don't want to do that then you can just carry 2 different binders at once. Those are the tips I found useful, But some kids still think that isnt enough and that there should be passing time

  13. In California schools, the students have a later start time at 8:00 A.M. and high schoolers start school at 8:30 A.M.

Later start times are proven to give students better attitudes and better attention spans. Doctors say that later start times are more healthy than early start times and stop some suicidal thoughts.

With early start times some kids don’t get fed. But with early start times kids get out of school earlier with a mandatory 6 and a half hours a day.

Waking up late and trying to get to school on time is like trying to get on a plane that already took off.

Some students get dropped off at school or drive and people that ride the bus all ways to school get affected by start time even for people that walk get affected by not getting enough sleep.

  14. Have you ever wonder why BMS has the water bottle policy? An 8th Grade reporter started to ask questions about the water bottle policy. Like how many clear water bootle do you own?

The 8th-grade reporter did some research on the water bottle policy and he found out that BMS has this policy so they only can drink water from their water bottles. But the 8th-grade reporter did some more research about drinks that were clear some drinks include vodka and other alcoholic drinks.

In the student handbook, there is nothing about the water bottle policy in the handbook says the 8th-grade reporter. The 8th-grade reporter that goes to BMS says that BMS sells there own water bottle in the spring for $2.00. Should BMS change its water bottle policy that’s up to you decide?

  15. The meaning of Cipa is called child internet protection association. So it tries to protect kids from the dangers of the internet.

The Cipafilter is like a knight with a shield defending children from sites that are bad but for older students, it’s a different story.

“The Cipafilter gets harder to avoid when you get older,” Students say “ The more time goes on the more they block.” This is by the fact that the Cipafilter goes through 1,000s of sites each day.

Students also say that “It gets in the way of research sometimes. Especially when searching for heavy topics like suicide, school shootings, etc.” Even the Portage Instructional Technology Coordinator (ITC) thinks the Cipafilter bans educational sites when it filters through sites.

The ITC says that the Cipafilter makes sites go through an algorithm so it allows students to enter the site or not.

Also, the ITC said the equipment costs about $8,500 and the service costs $500 per month. That’s about $16,500! (If you count a year of service costs and the equipment.) With that much money, you can buy a car! Think of what else you could buy with that money.

  16. What is the problem at BMS about homework? Students reported that they get 3-4 assignments a day. They all said they get 4-5 agginments done a day at home and in study hall. This reporter said that kids were more stressed if they had to do homework at home. Students also stated that homework gives them headaches and makes there sleeping schedule all messed up.

Students also reported that on the weekends they sometimes have homework and it does not give them time to spend time with their family and friends. Some kids stated that they have jobs as well as homework, this can make their grades slip.

The students at bms said that if they have too much homework it gives them less time to do activities and to socialize with their friends online or to hang out with them. Kids stated that if they have a big assignment it get them stress and make them worried. The kids at bms say that they have chores and after school activities to do as well as there homework and they also have stuff to do on the weekend and then they stay up all night sunday doing their homework.

In conclusion bms gets kids stressed because of homework.
