I am Malala

We've been discussing the book with our table groups.  Now it's time to talk with your friends from other classes that are also reading this book.  Take some time to think about a part of the book that would make for a good discussion.  It can be any part from the beginning to the part you read for today.

Tell about the part you read, give your thoughts about it, and invite others to share their thoughts too.

Here are some discussion stems:

I want to talk about the part where __________________.  I thought _____________________.  What did you think?

The part that I thought was most interesting so far was _____________________________.  I think _________________________________________.  What did you think?

  1. I want to talk about the part where the radio mullah was giving out/telling false information. It seemed that all he was saying was opinions and only sometimes thats a good thing but not all the time. From page 39-43 they were talking about how women should be living their lives to how earthquakes were "punishing" people's lives. I don't think that is true. What do you think? The part that I thought that was interesting so far was that when Malala was explaining what was an earthquake was and it's purpose. Since Malala was the next generation and was the generation that went to school more than the last generation with how women didn't know that much. What did you think?

    1. I agree with the radio Mullah is not true because it's just common sense to know that people on the radio can say not true things like, earthquakes are God's punishment to people on the ground.

    2. I also agree. The radio Mallah was just trying to get people to think that what they believe is true.

    3. I agree. The radio Mullah tried to make everyone believe false information.

    4. I agree with this statement. This is due to the point that "Mullah" was giving false information to promote his opinion. The generation before, women had less education in general.

  2. I would like to talk about the part where the "Mufti" came to her house and was telling her dad that he needs to close the school because, they think teenage girls shouldn't go to school on page 32-33. As I was reading, I thought that, that was kind of rude because women/girls need an education too because it's not just school to them, school depends on your future and school makes you smarter, so you can understand many things. I thought that the most interesting part was when the "Mufti" showed up because they thought that they could go and try to shut down a school for girls, but that's rude so I think it's weird how they would have the guts to do that.

    1. I agree with the part that women/girls need an education but, in their culture they believe girls are a disappointment and think girls should not get an education.

    2. I agree, i think both genders should have the same eduction, like now days. Girls need eduction just like boys do because it is important for both woman and men to have the future they want and work for it.

    3. I agree with how Mufti was very rude. This was due to the point that Mufti was following the taliban.

  3. I want to talk about when Malala was secretly Gul Makai, the girl who wrote all the diary entries.(end of 77-80) I thought that she was taking a huge risk for doing it. Not knowing if anyone would find out it was her, and what they would think of her. And what would happen if the Taliban were to find out, and possibly harm her or her entire family.

    1. I agree that she was taking a big risk.
I aso think she was doing the write thing she was standing up for what she loves.

    2. I agree with you that it is a big risk. I also think that people have been judgy about it but also some people liked it. I feel like she was doing what was right for her.

      Delete
    3. I agree. But, I also think that it would be worth the risk because she is doing what she believes is right.

    4. I agree it was a very big risk, but it was worth it because she is talking about what she believes in

    5. I do agree it is a big risk. But by risking herself she is putting hope in others. I would do it but I would also try to keep it secret.

  4. The part that I thought was most interesting so far was when the military started dropping candy at malala's school. I think that it would be cool to see the military drop candy over top of you to show that they are here to help you.what do you think about that. pg 56.

    1. I agree think that dropping candy over school is telling the kids that everything should be ok and not to worry.

      Delete
    2. I agree. I think the candy was to show them they were there to help. I know if I was on the ground and having candy tossed at me, I would be happy that someone was there to help, and I would be happy I got to have some candy meanwhile!

    3. I also agree. It would have made me feel safe to know that they are doing everything that they can and that they would be so kind to do such a nice thing like that.

      Delete
    4. I agree, because when candy is being dropped over your school it makes everyone happy. It would also make the children feel safe.

    5. I agree because they probably don't get a lot of candy and they also probably felt safer with the army to protect them.

  5. I want to talk about the part when the women got band to go to school(73-74). I thought that the Taliban has no say on whether or not women go to school. The part I found the most interesting so far was when there were the earthquakes while she was at school(29).I found it interesting because no one got hurt, and for some reason I have always wanted to know what it like to be in an earthquake!

    1. I agree. I think they have no right to say who can and cannot go to school. It is the 21st century and equal rights for women and men are a big deal. I think the taliban shouldn't be going against something that doesn't affect them.

  6. I want to talk about the part in just 2008 the Taliban was bombing more than two hundred schools. (Page 65). Both suicide bombers and even targeted killers were occasional when it comes to the bombing of the schools. I thought and was shocked while I was reading that part because of how many places and people were getting more worse than they already were. Also while I was reading this part all I could think about was if these bombers would come to their school next. It already could be closer and closer. I'm wondering if Malala keeps speaking and sticking up for her, others, and her education that the Taliban could maybe stop the school bombings by what Malala has been saying. Could that possibly happen?

    1. Im wondering why they even bombed schools that have been shut down. The least/most they could do is transform them into homeless or meeting area's. I find it pointless to destroy building's with so much potential.

  7. I am wondering as to why the pakistani people still live in pakistan if all the violent wars and the taliban are there destroying their country? If I lived in Pakistan, I would have left right away. What would you have done?

    1. I agree that i would have left right away. With all the wars going on that must be scary.I would have not wanted to be there.

    2. I agree, I would leave right away because I wouldn't like to live somewhere that violent. It make me feel like I would be taking a risk everyday just stepping out of my house in my opinion.

  8. I want to talk about the part when they talk about taking there covers off (page 17). I don't think it is a wise choice for them to take there covers off because it is against there culture. What do you think?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I disagree, because with them taking their covers off, it will let the Taliban know that they are not afraid. And all that terrorists really want is to make their targets afraid. It also shows that they are sticking up for what they believe in.

    2. I agree with Emma. I think they should be able to be themselves and not have to listen to a terrorist group. For example it is like how a large amount of christians don't go to church every Sunday, but they still believe in God. How people express their religions is different then what the religions holy book says.

    3. I agree with Adeline and Emma because it makes them feel like their own person and that they aren't afraid and that they can listen to themselves and not others. For them to believe in themselves it makes them stick up for what they want ad believe in.

  9. I wanted to talk about the part when malala slept in and the teacher slapped their hands with sticks. Page 100. When I read that i wanted to know if they could get fried for that or if teachers are allowed to do that to students. I also wonder if parents know that teachers can hit their children?

    1. I was wondering the same thing like that would definitely get you fired now.

    2. I reread that page and I think this is wrong and obviously in this part of Pakistan it is okay because they just did it and the students didn't even flinch when he did it.

    3. I think that if they really respected their culture they wouldn't make this decision because like you said it is against their culture.

  10. I would like to talk about how the radio mullah knows when people are talking against him even if they are in private and he knows the name on page 39 to 41. What do you think.

  11. I wanted to talk about them leaving Swat because of the war on page 96-103. I think that I would have gone because you would probably die if you wouldn't. What do you think?

    1. I agree but I also think it was a good idea to leave and take a break. I think it would be pretty devastating to see what is happening to the place in which they grew up. It would also be a good idea to get away and see what is happening to the other people of their county.

      Delete
    2. I disagree, i think they should have stayed, because they would have been helping them and if they would have died, which I don't think they would have. I think it would have been a better idea for them in the long run if they stayed.

    3. I agree I would have left to because they would most likely die and you would have a hard time getting food and water.

  12. I wanna talk about how the teachers slapped them with sticks on the hands nowadays that would get you fired but since that was back then would you. And how do the parents feel about that. (Page 100)

    1. I reread that part and I think they should have gotten fired and that should not have been allowed. But back then I don't think they would have gotten fired.

    2. I also reread that page and I agree. I also think they should have gotten some kind of punishment for that because that was a wrong thing to do.

  13. I wanted to talk about when the girls got banned from going to school. I think that girls have every right to go to school and get an education. I think that woman should have every right that men have in pakistan. What do you think?

    ReplyDelete

    1. I agree. People that have the rights to go to school take advantage of this privilege. Little do they know, they won't be able to go anywhere in life without their education.

  14. I wanna talk about why girls/women can't go to school. Women/girls should be able to go to school and get an education. It is just as important for girls to have an education than it is for boys. What did you think?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Good point... I also believe girls and young women should be getting an education just like the boys/men could too. I even wondered what makes girls/women so different from men in the first place. Why couldn't we get the same equalness as the men get when it comes to an education.

      Delete
  15. I agree with you. Girls should have been able to have an education. It means a lot to people for them to go to school and have an education.

  16. I would like to discuss why Malala doesn't want to leave her home (chapter 15-17). I know moving is hard from personal experiences but this is for the greater good. she could give inspiration everywhere and to anyone. It can be hard to leave friends or even family but she says all sort of things about she wants to make a difference and stand up to girls education. Does she have something special to stay for? I do believe America would let her in for what she has done. In her case I would want to leave what about you?

  17. I agree, I don't think they fully know what is happening. Their parents tell them some things and hide other things.
